It hasn’t been the best of starts for Aston Villa. Having watched his team score once in the first two Gameweeks, Paul Lambert boosted his options up front by snapping up Christian Benteke from Belgian side Genk prior to this summer’s transfer deadline. The 21-year-old, who moves to the midlands on a four-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m, is Lambert’s eighth signing since taking over the reins this summer:

Benteke continues Lambert’s recent policy of acquiring younger players from lower leagues or abroad, with a deliberate decision to mainly choose ambition over experience when restructuring his side. The Villa boss sang the praises of his new signing and revealed he expects the youngster to have a real impact up front this term:

Christian is only 21 years of age but already he’s an established Belgian international and he’s had a terrific time at Genk. He’s something very different to what we have here and that added dimension will enhance the football club. A young lad he may be, but he’s definitely a handful. He’s tall, powerful, he has pace and we’ll be stronger with him in the side.

The Statistics

The young Belgian’s career began in his native country at Gent where, as a 17-year-old, he made seven appearances in the 2007-08 season. Benteke then moved to Standard Liege, scoring three goals and providing a couple of assists in nine games before being loaned out to KV Kortrijk midway through the campaign.

Over a couple of seasons he scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 32 appearances, but Benteke failed to settle upon returning to his parent club; Liege farmed him out to Mechelin in 2010-11 before finally selling him back to Genk before the start of last season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, Benteke delivered. Returning 10 goals and four assists from 22 appearances in his first season, he continued his storming form earlier this term, with three goals and an assist in five games before Lambert came calling.

The Prospects

Standing six foot five tall, Benteke offers the midlands outfit an extra edge up front, with a raw, physical presence that is sure to unsettle many a Premier League centre-half. He could be just the ally Darren Bent needs to spark his lacklustre season into life – with Lambert utilising Benteke in a similar way to Grant Holt for Norwich last season, Bent will be looking to feed off knock-downs and grab the goals to fire Villa up the table.

Certainly, Lambert’s selection policy so far bodes well for Benteke. Summer signings such as Matt Lowton, Ron Vlaar and Karim El Ahmadi have all started every match and with Nathan Delfouneso loaned out to Blackpool for the season, options up front are minimal – Benteke could well be ahead of Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor in the pecking order as Bent’s partner, with plenty of starts looking likely if Lambert continues with a 4-4-2. Service from the flanks will be vital – the likes of Barry Bannan, Brett Holman or Charles N’Zogbia will be tasked with delivering plenty crosses for the new boy to feed upon; Benteke’s aerial ability could perhaps boost their assist potential.

Priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Benteke’s mid-price appeal is unlikely to pick up many suitors just yet. With a point, two goals and no clean sheets from their first three, it’s understandable that faith in Villa’s Fantasy assets is currently faltering. The next six Gameweeks, however, sees the midlands outfit welcome (SWA, WBA, NOR) to Villa Park and with a trip to Southampton also on their short-term agenda, Lambert’s side are afforded a strong opportunity to quickly turn their season around.

Surely that means that if RVP and Rooney are injured then Hernandez and Welbeck can come in no problem.

Because people who were affected by it and a large part of the Liverpudlian community feels they never got an apology for being viewed as the perpetrators to the disaster. Liverpool fans had a bad reputation because of the Heysel disaster so people jumped on the incident as an example of their inherent hooligan nature. But a lot of people were offended by this and felt it was the police's fault and they got a free ride and were not brought to justice. So you hear everyone saying Justice for the 96 these days.

A full report is finally being released today about the disaster, it reveals a few things, most notably how the police doctored 164 statements, and re-directed the blame on the fans.

Here's a statement from the PM on the subject earlier today in parliament.

"This appalling death toll of so many loved ones lost was compounded by an attempt to blame the victims. A narrative about hooliganism on that day was created which led many in the country to accept that it was somehow a grey area.

Today’s report is black and white. The Liverpool fans “were not the cause of the disaster”. The Panel has quite simply found “no evidence” in support of allegations of “exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans ”no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium” and “no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying.”

Need to find a 4.5 defender for my WC team
already have Ivanovic, McAuley, Jenkinson, Demel.

is hughes (ful) nailed on or rotation threat ?
other options are Cuellar, clark, Gorkss, Bertrand

The thing with Rvp is the following...has he ever in the past played once he had an "injury scare" for the Dutch national side?

The answer is probably "NO". Rvp is fragile when he is fit.

    Van Gaal is monkey IMO.

Which is the better WC defence:

    (A)

    Baines / Demel / Saylor / Cuellar / Clyne

Personally I don't see why they'd drop Ridgewell, he's done well for them since joining last season and they have a settled defence atm which is doing well.

Still seeing a lot of Graham in RMT's this week, and I'm wondering whether that is purely hoping he comes good based on team form and fixtures, or whether there is some stat that is giving you more faith in him? I understand he is cheap, but he just doesn't seem to be able to generate as many points as he should, though this doesn't mean he's a terrible pick by any stretch. I've decided to go RVP/Tevez/Jelavic and take a bit of strength from my midfield to compensate. Hopefully it pays off, but we'll see. Maybe I'm just trying to justify my switch, but can anyone offer anything outside of just the obvious on Graham?

Jelavic is of course a million times better than Graham so best of luck with that. My argument against Graham would be if you look at his goals last year he only really scored maybe one true 'Winner' if I'm correct against Arsenal. The majority of times he scored his team was cruising. I don't see him as a big goalscoring threat personally. He's more there to hold it up and adhere to Swansea's style which puts focus on their attacking set of midfielders at the moment.

From what I've seen, he is good foil for Michu and Dyer. For a team who have scored 10 goals, I would be concerned if my lone striker had only been involved in 1 of them...better options at the moment...

Agreed, Sunderland and Stoke barely attacked, they just parked the bus. But then, from another viewpoint, we played with 2/5 of our first choice back 5 for two games.

Gibbs is a good pick, gets forward a lot, seems to pick up bonus points aswell.
