Robin Van Persie is subbed off at half-time during Holland’s win over Hungary. Shinji Kagawa misses out for Japan due to a back problem, Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Dzeko continue their strong starts to the season, while a Frank Lampard penalty saves a point for England as we round up all the main protagonists from last night’s international matches…

Shinji Kagawa’s Fantasy owners were handed a scare after the United midfielder pulled out of Japan’s game with Iraq. The former Dortmund man played down fears of any problem, going on to say:

“I felt a twinge in the back during practice when I was on the ball. I had some treatment but didn’t want to risk causing the team trouble by playing. Obviously it’s a shame I wasn’t able to play… It’s not that serious and I don’t think it will keep me out for long”.

Nevertheless, there will be concerns over Kagawa’s fitness heading into Saturday’s match with Wigan. Sir Alex Ferguson has been careful with his game time in the last couple of league games, subbing off the summer signing from Dortmund around the hour mark and with Wayne Rooney injured and Van Persie’s official prognosis still unknown, we face an anxious wait until the club releases statements. With a Champions League clash against Galatasaray the following Wednesday, Ferguson is unlikely to take any unnecessary risks.

The United boss also has Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez to travel back from matches in Uruguay and Mexico respectively. The pair enjoyed contrasting evenings, Valencia seeing red on 90 minutes in Ecuador’s draw with Uruguay, while Javier Hernandez netted the winner for Mexico in their 1-0 win over Costa Rica. Ferguson will now hope to get both back unscathed as he assesses his squad prior to the Wigan clash. The Friday morning press conference can’t come soon enough for many.

Branislav Ivanovic continued his superb start to the season with a goal and two assists in Serbia’s 6-1 thrashing of Wales last night. City’s Aleksandar Kolarov also played a part for the victors, providing a goal and assist in what was described in some quarters as an “inspirational performance”. Gareth Bale served a reminder of his eye for goal by lashing home a long-range free-kick for Chris Coleman’s side as a consolation. QPR’s Jamie Mackie provided an assist in Scotland’s home draw with Macedonia, while Zoltan Gera provided an assist in Hungary’s defeat by Holland – a foul on the West Brom midfielder in the box led to a converted spot-kick by Balasz Dszudszak.

John Arne Riise played a crucial part in Norway’s 2-1 win over Slovenia – the Fulham left-back hammered home a spot-kick deep into time added on to seal the three points for the hosts. Jonny Evans picked up an assist in Northern Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Luxembourg – the Man United centre-half teed up Dean Shiels to put his national ahead early in the first-half. Reading centre-half Kaspars Gorkss gave Latvia the lead in Bosnia but the hosts, led by Edin Dzeko with a goal and two assists, ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.

Frank Lampard saved England’s blushes with a late spot-kick earning a home draw against Ukraine, with Danny Welbeck providing the assist. Reading’s Alex Pearce climbed off the bench to net for Republic of Ireland in a 4-1 win over Oman; Shane Long was also amongst the goals for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side. Swansea new boy Ki-Sing Yeung turned in a mixed performance for South Korea yesterday. The midfielder’s own goal handed Uzbekistan the lead but he somewhat atoned for his error by providing an assist for his nation’s equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard and Geoff Cameron were all in the US starting XI that sealed a 1-0 win over Jamaica. Dempsey played the full 90 minutes for the US as he looks to build up his fitness ahead of his debut for Spurs. A bench role looks likely for the former Fulham man when Andre Villas-Boas’ side travel to Reading on Sunday.

Just to finish last debate , it is my opinion that Eire are a decent side, not in Spain / Germany/Holland etc league but thereabouts in the ensuing pack - granted at the back of it !
For me Trap is holding us back with his managerial attitude , Credit for what he has done up to now , but I genuinely would like to see Roy Keane given a chance at this point .

I would like to see a coaching change for you guys too, not actually that Trap is a bad coach, but you would suit a different style better. I cant say if Keane would be a good manager, I have no idea how to rate him and it is hard to stay byas with him being one of my favorite players of all time.

Morning all. Probably been covered 1000 times on here already but only just jumped on here. Whats the general feel on here of RVP's chances of starting on Saturday? Assuming he is a doubt the VC selection suddenly becomes very important. My options are are currently between Hazard and Podolski (currently with the latter).

Not bad choices imo... one or another seem to fit with VC selection although I must say that I think Chelsea will struggle at Loftus Road.

RvP will play, I think it was really precautionary his early exit of the game.

Team A (no RVP - more balanced - sorry if seen repost)

      Foster - Bego
      Baines - Rafael - Hughes - Cuellar - Demel
      Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Snodgrass - Maloney
      Tevez - Torres - Jelavic

      Team B (more big hitters)

      Foster - Bego

Against Belgium he was good. Had the beating of Vertonghen (or the other full-back when he switched over) every time, pretty much. But we just didn't get it out to him enough. Good though.

Yesterday, not the best. Although everyone was shit. Had a couple of good runs, but overall not great.

He was poor again last night. Against Belgium his tackling/closing down was good, but his passing was a bit off. Don't quite know what's happened to him, tbh. Form has dipped badly over the last 5-6 months.

He has to play though, we've not got much else.

Oh the irony. With doubts over Kagawa and RVP I may need to bring Cazorla in. I just realized I don't have enough budget for him, will take two transfers to get him. I'm a Gooner, he's been staring me in the face the whole time and I've waited for better fixtures. Karma.

Obligatory "I woz there" pleading here... I was singing his praises from the moment he was linked to Arsenal. But I thought the CazMeister was mortal and obeyed fixture law. I so bet he'll explode now.

Yeah. I'm taking the pretty obvious view now that you have to pick the best players and play them every game. Rotating and benching points kills me. The only area I don't completely apply this to is defenders, but I'm definitely quitting the home and away rotation and playing them solely on my own fixture difficulty ratings

If the makers of South Park wanted to, they could make a hell of an episode parodying this whole Team GB/The 'passion' of the olympics stuff. The headlines for the England match last night are all about how much of an 'anti-climax' it was after the olympics. Since when was watching England ever exciting? Or watching any early international qualifiers for that matter. These people are going to be smug about the values of their Olympics for as long as they can keep it up, I find it extremely nauseating.

It's always easier to impress in individual sports. The heroes of the olympics were in individual sports generally, very few team sports. Most team sports become labeled as boring by casuals because, to put it bluntly, people can't deal with complexity.

it is also easier to be successful at minority sports, which almost all of the sports in olympics are, even more so when the governments vastly over funds your sport in relation to competitors.

i get annoyed by the fact most of the sports require very little talent. One girl got selected cause her arse was right shape for saddle.
cycling- go round in a circle without falling off and if you fall you get to start again, i was doing that on my housing estate when we were 12 with a raleigh stryker
rowing- sitting on your arse waving arms back and forward in time with 1-7 other guys.
equestrian- sitting on arse letting horse do all the work then taking the medal from it.
swimming- moving arms and legs in various shapes until you hit a wall then turn round and repeat.

😆 Someone sounds jealous! If it's so easy why don't you go and win a gold medal? No? That's because it's not easy as you're competing against others, you're not competing with the 'easy' rules of the game, you're competing against other top athletes. Equestrian is shite though.

i didnt ever say it was easy, just not requiring much skill.
hence these being minority sports which the vast majority of the time no one watches other than friends, relatives and fellow competitors.
something like football is watched by so many because you know that there can those moments of magic that you would never expect (unless you watch scottish football). other than the hype of the olympics these sports are pretty much bland.
the annoying thing is that that so much funding was given to them for one event, which was disproportional to the number of competitors and even impact on society as a whole. Which was unfairly influenced by the class structure that still exists within britain.
Equestrian is shite, although i wouldnt do it

Deep philosophical stuff here. Can you tell a lie that's also bullshit?

                            Let's ask SAF:

"Course not. Looks like 8 weeks at the earliest."

Which striker under 7 will produce the most over the next 6weeks? I play 3-4-3

Genuinely read that as 'Lamberting over my third striker spot' to start with!

Against Wales he was very, very quiet. Didn't do anything wrong, just wasn't really involved in the game much.

Is it worth doing Kag -> Caz for a 4 pt hit based on Kag possibly being injured, but with Caz having Man CIty (a) and CHelsea (h) after this GW?
My alternative plan is no hit as I have Guthrie ready to sub in for Kag, and then do Kag to HBA next week in time for Newcastle's next 2 nice hames Nor(h), Reading(a)

                          DDG, Kagawa and RVP.

It would be typical if none of them play.

I think he knows, he's just taking my inclusion of Rafael in the team to imply I don't think he'll start there. And actually Rafael should start, so fair enough King Nil.

With the injury to Jones I really don't see who else would play RB - Valencia is of course an "option" but he wouldn't take Rafael's place just to rotate. For example, Carrick wouldn't play CB if JEvans was fit, he only played there in emergency as Valencia did when Rafael was knackered from Olympics.

I've got Rafael and I'm pretty confident he'll play most games this season - Smalling could challenge that but he still isn't fit.

Balls - plan was to save transfer this week, and then next week do:

                        Zabaleta -> 5m defender
                        Kagawa -> Hazard

I really do think that with this back injury Kagawa will not be risked now vs Wigan and so should really jump off him this week, but can't afford to go to Hazard without the other switch, which this week would require a hit.

Other option would be Kagawa -> Cazorla, but that deviates from my plan, and I love plans and didn't want Cazorla until GW 7/8.

                        Gotta hate international breaks 🙁

I would hold on and wait now if it were me. The time to do that transfer was straight after the gw3 deadline before Hazard hit 10m. Kagawa could deliver this gw while Chelsea could be up against it at QPR so I am not expecting a big points haul from Hazard this gw anyway. Also gives you another week to assess 5m defender options (thinking in particularly WBA defence - Popov, Ridge etc)

I was thinking, RVP got taken off as a precaution at half time, Kagawa was told not to play half an hour before the Japan game. Does anyone else smell a rat? Fergie has got to have had some influence over these decisions. I would not be surprised if Man Utd sent out people to specifically prevent their top players playing if there is any sign of an injury.

ye Kagawa's sounds the suspicious one. I just wouldn't be surprised if clubs warned international managers with stuff like 'any sign of an injury and get him off immediately' (or I will hunt you down)

My horribly out of position XI. All the following have either played there before or their managers have talked about playing them there.

Awful. Worst thing of all is that he screws up Kagawa's game by drifting into his space.*

Ah. I forgot to put Suarez at CF. He clearly should not be allowed anywhere near a goal. At least not without an electronic tag.

                          My puzzle of the day:
Michu and Yaya (like everyone else)
                          OR Pienaar and Bale ?

Frightening how quite a few minileagues probably could be won just by WCing in the Scout Picks and doing the most common transfer on the boards every week.

Difficult, but at the end of the day if one team is going to completely outpass the other, you got to expect goals.

Dcent, though mainly at home, PRIOR to Dembele leaving. Dembele leaving tips me against them.

Ah I've been rumbled. Fair point, I think some big away defeats have unfairly biased me against their away CS potential

                                  😆

I've actually never looked into the volumes of goals conceded - just clean sheets or not. Once a clean sheet has been spoilt another few goals are relatively insignificant. Much better to have a defender who concedes 3 in half his games and 0 in the other half than someone who always concedes 1.

Hmm, there's the basis for some research somewhere in that...

I believe Newcastle were in a similar situation last year. Got a reputation for home cleanies when they actually kept loads away, it was just a couple of thrashings that stuck in people's heads.

I agree on the CS points.

Newcastle were 9 home, 6 away - better at home but still good away (despite some pastings, as you say). The season before they kept more away and the season before that was very even.

Having preconceived ideas about a team's strengths and weaknesses can be hugely dangerous in this game.
