Robin Van Persie is subbed off at half-time during Holland’s win over Hungary. Shinji Kagawa misses out for Japan due to a back problem, Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Dzeko continue their strong starts to the season, while a Frank Lampard penalty saves a point for England as we round up all the main protagonists from last night’s international matches…

Shinji Kagawa’s Fantasy owners were handed a scare after the United midfielder pulled out of Japan’s game with Iraq. The former Dortmund man played down fears of any problem, going on to say:

“I felt a twinge in the back during practice when I was on the ball. I had some treatment but didn’t want to risk causing the team trouble by playing. Obviously it’s a shame I wasn’t able to play… It’s not that serious and I don’t think it will keep me out for long”.

Nevertheless, there will be concerns over Kagawa’s fitness heading into Saturday’s match with Wigan. Sir Alex Ferguson has been careful with his game time in the last couple of league games, subbing off the summer signing from Dortmund around the hour mark and with Wayne Rooney injured and Van Persie’s official prognosis still unknown, we face an anxious wait until the club releases statements. With a Champions League clash against Galatasaray the following Wednesday, Ferguson is unlikely to take any unnecessary risks.

The United boss also has Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez to travel back from matches in Uruguay and Mexico respectively. The pair enjoyed contrasting evenings, Valencia seeing red on 90 minutes in Ecuador’s draw with Uruguay, while Javier Hernandez netted the winner for Mexico in their 1-0 win over Costa Rica. Ferguson will now hope to get both back unscathed as he assesses his squad prior to the Wigan clash. The Friday morning press conference can’t come soon enough for many.

Branislav Ivanovic continued his superb start to the season with a goal and two assists in Serbia’s 6-1 thrashing of Wales last night. City’s Aleksandar Kolarov also played a part for the victors, providing a goal and assist in what was described in some quarters as an “inspirational performance”. Gareth Bale served a reminder of his eye for goal by lashing home a long-range free-kick for Chris Coleman’s side as a consolation. QPR’s Jamie Mackie provided an assist in Scotland’s home draw with Macedonia, while Zoltan Gera provided an assist in Hungary’s defeat by Holland – a foul on the West Brom midfielder in the box led to a converted spot-kick by Balasz Dszudszak.

John Arne Riise played a crucial part in Norway’s 2-1 win over Slovenia – the Fulham left-back hammered home a spot-kick deep into time added on to seal the three points for the hosts. Jonny Evans picked up an assist in Northern Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Luxembourg – the Man United centre-half teed up Dean Shiels to put his national ahead early in the first-half. Reading centre-half Kaspars Gorkss gave Latvia the lead in Bosnia but the hosts, led by Edin Dzeko with a goal and two assists, ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.

Frank Lampard saved England’s blushes with a late spot-kick earning a home draw against Ukraine, with Danny Welbeck providing the assist. Reading’s Alex Pearce climbed off the bench to net for Republic of Ireland in a 4-1 win over Oman; Shane Long was also amongst the goals for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side. Swansea new boy Ki-Sing Yeung turned in a mixed performance for South Korea yesterday. The midfielder’s own goal handed Uzbekistan the lead but he somewhat atoned for his error by providing an assist for his nation’s equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard and Geoff Cameron were all in the US starting XI that sealed a 1-0 win over Jamaica. Dempsey played the full 90 minutes for the US as he looks to build up his fitness ahead of his debut for Spurs. A bench role looks likely for the former Fulham man when Andre Villas-Boas’ side travel to Reading on Sunday.

Hughes is good value at 4.5 with Fulham's upcoming fixtures. S Taylor would probably be better in the long run at 5.0, I see Newcastle keeping more CS over the season plus Taylor got a lot of BPs when he was fit last season

Apparently Americans think Britain and England are the same thing, when telling people in the US that Andy Murray is Scottish, they do sometimes think it is part of England

But the BBC are the worst at thinking England IS Britain.

This was perfectly illustrated when one interviewer asked sprinter Usain Bolt to give a message to "the whole of England watching" after his Olympic triumphs. - bit arrogant if u ask me!

The whole thing is very funny!!

Im not saying that it is an excuse and I explained myself wrong by saying it is some ones fault.

Let me be more clearer, for the average less educated foreigner.
GB(Union Jack)= England and they dont often hear about Scotland or Wales other than a conseption that it is a nice place somewhere in England(as people often say as they have already equalled that with GB) So it is something like Catalinua in spain for them.

The NI boxers were with the Rep. of Ireland, but the rest were with GB AFAIK.
Under the terms of the Good Friday agreement, anyone from Northern Ireland can choose their nationality as being from Rep. of Ireland or GB/UK.
Team GB should have been called Team UK. Lots of medal tables listed Team GB, leaving out NI, I think some changed it halfway through to say GB+NI.
In the paraolympics there were lots of NI athletes on the Irish team including Jason Smyth who only missed out on qualifying for the 100m proper by 0.04 secs.

For you all who are a part of those countries it is very percise and important and I understand that, but you must understand that it is easy to make that mistake. And you over there make similar mistakes for other countries, for example we here in Estonia have bunch of tourists from GB and they often think they are somewhere in russia or the soviet union despite us not having anything to do with Russia and the soviet union not excisting for 20 years. Also often here the Baltic states despite it just being the name of the region a la southern europe.

Although, saying that I have both Michu and Dyer in my team. Which is fine whilst Swansea have good fixtures, but when that starts to turn I will look to drop one, but not sure which one yet (leaning towards keeping Dyer at the moment but this may change!)

Is Hazard really a must have? WC team without him

    Foster – Jaaskelainen
    Baines – Hughes – Cuellar – Demel – Clyne
Pienaar – Michu – Santi Cazorla – Ben Arfa – Guthrie
Tevez – Van Persie – Torres

    comes down to

    A)Torres,Pienaar & Foster
    B)Flecher,Hazard & 4.5keeper

I'm leaning towards that way of thinking. Doesn't really matter what SAF says on friday because there's no way of trusting it, either way. But a 1 point (C) would spoil my weekend.

Cazorla for me. Southampton have shown a lot of spunk but they're not super at the back.

He is mid range admittedly but he has goals in him - hence finish against Chelsea.
Plus if Reading play the 2 Mc's on the wings he has some service.
Ok fixtures upcoming and at 4.9 as a bench warmer has to be in contention.

Looks like a dead leg suffered last night. Subbed at half-time as a precaution according to Van Gaal. No word from United yet and nobody but the Mail in a headline has come forward to say he's a doubt for the weekend. I'd expect word from United tomorrow.

Cheers Mark. Took a hit at the start of the break to get him, wouldn't have been able to with the price rises otherwise. Hardly anyone in my league has got him (they're mental if you ask me) - need him to live up to the hype!

He'll play, and then be rested for the Galatasary game IMO.

(Assuming it is a dead leg knock and nothing more).

Has everybody completely given up on Mata as a FPL option?

I'm considering Kagawa -> Mata this week, as I can't afford Hazard without a hit.

Mata has shown up in the Modric role, carrying the ball into the final third and despatching to the assister. Clear change from last season and it's been Hazard benefiting from it. Could be worth a punt if you feel that Kagawa is set to miss Wigan (which is far from certain as yet) but, long-term, Hazard looks far more profitable until we see Mata's pattern of play change a little.

it's also worth considering this will be the stance of many players and with it harder to find avenues the crowds aren't taking to steal a march could be worth the gamble (the potential is there) Just giving my position from what I've seen in the opening weeks. For me he's playing well within himself and I'm set on other routes but that could change very quickly, he has great fixtures too

Yes - I will only be ditching Kagawa this week if he's confirmed out.

I take the point re: Mata's role - it's a shame, I think he's got much more in his attacking locker than Modric ever had though, so surely eventually it will show though?

With Kagawa possibly out, do I play Pogrebnyak (TOT) or do I downgrade Kagawa for a -4 point hit, I don't have enough to get Cazorla.

Interested to hear if anyone thinks there's a good punt to be had this weekend on a mid who's cheaper than 8.5?

          This tells me two things:

          1) Ridgewell currently nailed on
          2) Ridgewell will be rotated/lose his place during the season. But when and for how long, nobody knows yet.
