A game of goals and controversy at Goodison Park brings Gameweek 4 to a conclusion. Here’s the Stock Check from the tonight’s tumultuous 2-2 stalemate…

On the Up

Leighton Baines
We could hardly have pushed the virtues of Baines any harder over the international break and the Everton left-back didn’t take long to demonstrate why. Linking superbly with Steven Pienaar, Baines covered himself in glory with a fine strike to cap another superb display.

Steven Pienaar
Two assists from the South African demonstrated his worth and effectiveness down the Everton left with Baines. Pienaar also threaded the pass for Victor Anichebe’s strike and was only denied further returns by the assistant’s flag. Significantly, despite strong returns from Marouanne Fellaini in the opening games, bonus for Pienaar would take him above the Belgian in the Fantasy Premier League rankings.

Demba Ba
The evening began with the Senegal striker on the timber, only for him to be introduced to turn the game in the second half. A rollercoaster evening for his 16% ownership that ended in confirmation that Ba is the man in form in the Newcastle frontline.

Going Down

Nikaca Jelavic
The Croatian crashed into a post early on and finally relented to the blow just before the break after suffering further knocks. Everton badly missed his influence in the second-half and David Moyes and Jelavic’s Fantasy owners will desperately hoping that he has escaped with a minor setback. We await the prognosis.

Papiss Cisse
Selected ahead of Ba to lead the line, Cisse was again overshadowed by his compatriot. His Fantasy owners will doubtless be twitching with frustration and mystified as to how Cisse’s strike rate has diminished so markedly given last season’s electric form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The fact he failed to get me two points this week is a major miffed.

Pienaar and Michu's YCs mean that's 3 points I should have had right there!

I never get high scoring subs coming into my team
I have never had a keeper save a pen
I have had many captains miss a pen
I have had a captain booked in a case of mistaken identity just before he limped of on 57mins at 0-0
I have lost count of cleanies vanishing after 85 mins
I have lost count of sitters missed by one of of my team having after being set up by another one.. usually one is captain

It's all skill this game.... But I love it! 😀

Everton v Newcastle was the best match I've watched live so far this season (alas, Arsenal v Southampton wasn't televised 😉 ). Following are my disorganized thoughts I came away with. If TL - DR 😉

Everton totally dominated central midfield in the first half and that's why they seemed unstoppable. Neville and Osman had all the time in the world to distribute the ball. There were times when there seemed to be no one around them except Cisse. It was difficult to work out what formation Newcastle were playing, if anything, because Marveaux and Ben Arfa were so uninvolved. Cisse was lone striker though.

At halftime the frankly awful Marveaux came off for Ba and Pardew did one of his famous halftime tactical wins, ie. exactly the same thing he does whenever it's not working. Which begs the question of why he doesn't begin like that. Went 4-3-3 with Ba central, Barfa left and Cisse/Ameobi right. In doing so he technically made good on his promise that Ba would always PLAY (note PLAY) as a centerforward this season. With a much more battling midfield three of Perch, Anita and Cabaye, Newcastle made the midfield a contest again. They also broke extremely quickly against a highish Everton line and on several occasions were denied one on ones by offsides or non-application of the advantage rule. Amoebi's aerial ability was a godsend for Ba - he set up Ba's second goal with a flick-on.

That said, the changes showed how much Everton really, really, really badly miss Gibson. Some of the passing by Neville and Osman was criminal once they were put under numerical pressure in the second half.

    Players
    - Baines - got forward exactly as much as the stats say. I was expecting him to cross more, but in fact he was doing that as a last resort and was cutting inside and interchanging with Pienaar far more often, which is how his goal happened. No joke - he is playing as an extra left winger in your fantasy team.

    - Pienaar - partner-in-crime for Baines, but obviously more central. Apart from the two assists, had a solid goalscoring opportunity on the edge of the box when he really should have squared it to Osman. Definite keeper for the foreseeable fixtures.

    - Fellaini - Fellaini has loads of doubters, including me, because he is perceived as a central midfielder. But once again I thought Fellaini would drop back to central midfield, and once again Moyes played him in the hole. It's now happened too many times to be a one-off - it's a fundamental part of the gameplan to kick it to the big man and see what happens. Particularly with Jelavic's knock (wait and see of course) it would seem that he will play there more often than not. He scored an incorrectly disallowed goal, had great involvement, and I am sneakily considering him as an outside differential.

    - Anichebe - honestly, I thought he was crap until he scored. Serves me right. A well-taken goal, but his movement was very uninspiring with the exception of that.

    - Ba & Cisse - Definitely a case of Ba 2 Cisse 0 tonight. One thing that has kept me off Newcastle strikers so far has been the division of points and rotation risk. But since it looks like Pardew is making good on his promise to play Ba as center forward, and Ba has made a very good case for that to continue with two goals, it seems unthinkable he wouldn't be next game. He's also in very good form when it comes to shot conversion, whereas Cisse is not.

    - Ben Arfa - fancy dribbles on the left, but was generally well taken care of by Hibbert. He did have a one-on-one though which he maybe should have scored, and I'm happily keeping him in my team for the foreseeable.

        Dilshan(c), Kohli, Raina, Warner, Masakadza.
        Watson, Nabi.
        Kieswetter.
        Malinga, Singh, McKay.

Dilshan is a risky captain choice for me. Doesn't bowl often in t20 cricket, and I'm never confident about captaining a batsman, too risky. I'm going with Malinga, probably.

Wouldn't waste a precious allrounder slot on an Afghanistan player.

Kieswetter doesn't play for a while, so I'd look at starting with a different keeper. Hard to look past Sangakarra, although he's pretty pricey.

Don't think McKay is nailed on in t20 cricket. Mickey Arthur has been talking up the opening partnership of Starc and Cummins, so I'd imagine Cummins will come into the side (from today's warm-up game with England) instead of McKay.

So you'd go for the Swinger Malinga as captain then?

Who would you get in for the All-Rounder/Keeper slots?

            Is Hogg a safer option?

Looking through Sri Lanka's recent games, Dilshan almost never bowls in t20 cricket and doesn't have much batting form coming into the tournament.

I'm personally starting with Matthews, Watson and Sangakarra.

Hogg a safe choice, will play. I'm probably going with Cummins and Starc for the Ireland game, both out and out wicket takers.

It doesn't work like that as such, you have 24 transfers to make during the Groups, so you should get those playing their 2 games early AUS/SL and swap them out for WI/SA/NZ players later on.

Is there a T20 fantasy tournament? I don't usually like to affect my enjoyment of the world's greatest sport by playing fantasy, but I'd make an exception for T20

Yup, it's on the ESPN Cricinfo website. Demi's set up a league and will have the code.

I love fantasy cricket. Much more mathematical and tactical than FPL.

Just to interject - nicely done. I see you must be going with home and away, and having a stab at the easier fixture if both are the same. Have Boyce, I'm wondering whether if Cuellar doesn't recover I'll switch Cuellar to Hughes.

interesting one, have Brede, considering drafting in Boyce. But right now I am considering the merits of a wc after GW7. It's internationals again so plenty of time to play the price rises, plus it takes in those Arsenal fixtures GW8 onwards meaning you can acquire 2 or 3 of Sagna, Gibbs, Caz and Pod.

Would leave a team looking something like this

      Migs/Foster

      Demel, Boyce, Hangeland, Sagna, Baines

      Johnson, Pienaar, Hazard, Sterling, Michu

      RvP, Berba, Pod.

De Gea on 91% as of 23:00 on FISO but i'm knackered. How close to 100% do they need to be? I think i may get away with leaving it tonight? Anyone got an example to calm/panic me?
