Emmanuel Adebayor is sidelined for Tottenham’s European clash with Lazio. Steve Clarke admits Goran Popov is unlikely to feature in West Brom’s home clash with Reading. Michael Kightly is hoping for a less defensive role with Stoke, while Oscar steals the headlines as Chelsea and Manchester United get their respective Champions League campaigns underway:

Emmanuel Adebayor has been ruled out of Tottenham’s Europa League clash with Lazio this evening. Andre Villas-Boas revealed in yesterday’s press conference that the Togo international has picked up a hamstring injury and will miss the White Hart Lane opener – Benoit Assou-Ekotto is also sidelined while the club assess his knee problem. Major question marks must now be placed against Adebayor’s availability for Sunday’s home clash against QPR, further enhancing Jermain Defoe’s chances of starting as he looks to add to his three goals and an assist from the opening four Gameweeks.

Steve Clarke gave Fantasy managers an early injury update yesterday. In particular, the West Brom boss spoke of Steven Reid and Goran Popov’s chances of making Saturday’s home clash with Reading:

“Steven’s been outside working with the medical staff towards being fit as soon as possible. He’s had a hamstring injury and he’s recovered to a point where it’s almost right, but you don’t want to take the next step too quickly. We will monitor it as the week goes on but we are still hopeful for the weekend. As for Goran, he had to go back to Kiev after the Fulham game and we will assess him when he’s back, but he is very doubtful for the weekend.”

The Popov prognosis is particularly good news for Fantasy managers, in the short-term at least. A start at left-back for the loan signing would have a major knock-on effect on the game time of Liam Ridgewell and possibly Gareth McAuley, with Ridgewell’s versatility meaning he is also capable of moving to the centre of defence. Both have been drafted in by plenty Fantasy managers ahead of a schedule that sees (RDG, QPR, SOT) in the next six and with clean sheets in both their first two at the Hawthorns, more investment can be expected.

Michael Kightly has admitted he’s had to rein in his attacking instincts for Stoke after a tough opening start to the season:

“I am having to play a bit more defensive than I would like, but we have had a tough start with our games and sometimes you have to do that for the team. We’ve played top sides at home and played at Wigan where they play a different system. Hopefully, against the so-called lesser teams at home we can be a bit more free-flowing and attacking. When the big clubs come, you know you aren’t going to have as much possession and their full-backs play advanced, so if you don’t track them back they will punish you. You are thinking about their full-back and stopping him scoring rather than thinking of getting past him to create a goal.”

Despite facing home clashes with Arsenal and City, Tony Pulis’ side remain unbeaten after four Gameweeks, with Kightly still managing to average five points per game in FPL. Trips to Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the next four is likely to have the Potters on the back foot once again before the fixture list begins to favour Stoke from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Manchester United 1 Galatasaray 0
Sir Alex made three changes at the back for the visit of Galatasaray. David De Gea was given the nod in goal, Jonny Evans replaced Rio Ferdinand in central defence and Patrice Evra reclaimed the left-back berth from Alexander Buttner. Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa were both handed starts, having been rested for the weekend match with Wigan. Kagawa supplied the assist for Michael Carrick to notch the only goal of a game that saw Darren Fletcher return to action after a lengthy lay-off, replacing Paul Scholes with just over 10 minutes remaining.

United’s spot-kick problems continued last night, though. Nani’s failed attempt against the Turkish side, following on from Javier Hernandez and Van Persie’s misses against Wigan and Southampton respectively means United have now failed to score with their last three penalties. While Wayne Rooney looks likely to remain number one for penalties when he returns from injury, Ferguson admitted Van Persie should have taken last night’s effort, suggesting the Dutchman is first in line until Rooney returns.

“I think he (Nani) just ran and grabbed the ball. I thought Robin should have taken it, to be honest with you.I think we will have to decide before the game. That was my fault, I should have done that.”

Chelsea 2 Juventus 2
It was all about Oscar last night as the young Brazilian made a sensational Champions League debut for the defending champions. Handed a starting role alongside Eden Hazard and Ramires in the attacking midfield three, the young Brazilian fired a superb brace against Juventus to announce his intentions to Fantasy managers. Just as we begin to perhaps consider him as a differential, he was then withdrawn on 74 minutes for Juan Mata, with Roberto Di Matteo admitting post-match:

“It was a bad tackle on Oscar before he came off. He had a knock on his ankle and we will assess him tomorrow.”

In other injury news, Chelsea were without the services of Daniel Sturridge for last night’s match – the club revealed via their official twitter stream that the forward was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Need some advice, the current team looks like

    Federeci-Jussi

    Naughton-Gorkss-Demel-Rafael-Jenkinson

    Cazorla-Hazard-Michu-Kagawa-Toure

    Torres-Kone-Tevez

I’m think of downgrading Rafael to Davies and changing Torres to RVP.. or should I stick? also what other changes should I make.. I’ve taken a punt on Naughton.. have another free Transfer.

Your team is already too top heavy IMO. Once Sagna is back and when Rafael is dropped you're in trouble defensively. I'd actually recommend downgrading Kagawa to (maybe to Pie?) to fund the move.

Far too far saying he was the best player on the pitch, don't get too giddy just yet. Kagawa and Carrick were much better. As were both of Galatasaray's fullbacks.

Nani is always gifted the best opportunities but as well as he sometimes creates them, he wastes them as well. Still a way to go yet.

                Exactly.
And on an "elongated run" - meh. He is sooo inconsistent and unreliable its ridiculous. SAF knows what hes doing and its pretty clear why Nani doesnt start every game.

Tosey, you still about? Just wanted to say that having watched ITFC last night, i'm pretty sure that's one relegation space taken up this season...good news for BrisC!

Anyway, looks like we've had similar starts to the season (i WC'd after GW1 too - and got stung by the Rooney, RVP double + Spurs' poor start. I've also got both Michu and Dyer).

    Anyway 2 things:
    1) I see you've got Berba in this week. I've currently got Ba as my 3rd striker. Would you keep for next few weeks before making switch to Berba? Or move early?
    2) What are your thoughts on Baines? Worth the money?

    Cheers

      I'm not Tosey...but here goes.

I did Petric-->ba this week. I monitoring over next two weeks and will make call prior to ManU(h). Might then switch to Podl or Berba, although I also brought Kaca this week and I hope Kaca makes up fro not having berba.

Ba to Defoe might also be an option.

It would help if you took people's opinions by asking which of the two transfers better. McClean-> HBA or Graham -> Ba.

Whats the third transfer? Or are you making both these transfers?

I know exactly what you mean, and I have eluded to that in my reply to LaterRiser below...

The trouble I have is not wanting to miss a potential double figure haul from Ben Arfa at the beginning of a great run of fixtures for Newcastle, but in the same light, I also am aware that Sunderland have great fixtures too, with the down side that McClean has yet to produce...

That only creates doubt (like Bale last week etc) and until he does start scoring, it's very hard to justify keeping him...

Sorry i am coming in with a lot of posts today. But another question i need to ask. What do you do with players who have performed for you and don't necessarily have bad fixtures, when you a want a players that could be explosive in the future. Currently referencing my want to get HBA in but having no reason to ship Pienaar Michu Yaya or Hazard out.

Stay strong .. you picked them for a reason, you can't have them all. If it's for free Yaya --> Ben Arfa isn't a bad move but this is Yaya's sort of game.

Dont think getting HBA in for 2 fixtures is that good of an idea anyway. All of those 4 are better long term options imo.

      Hide behind the couch?

We are all in the same boat. I have Ba and want Pienaar for gw 6, although I have baines for Eve cover. So now do I sell Bale thatjust scored me 11 and who will hopefully do well vs QPR? Probably will since Bale is up against Manu(a) when pienaar faces(SOUTH)

I really think yaya out is your solution.

I thought maybe that was too, but mate, did you see the Madrid City game? Yaya was a beast. Attacking wise.
Also, Javi Garcia + Barry back to being fit + Jack Rodwell on the bench + Nasri crocked makes Yaya a bloody exciting prospect.

I have a fairly similar dilemma with McClean... now you could argue that he hasn't scored any points and thus it would be a fairly easy decision to ship him for Ben Arfa... but I'm not so sure, since we all know he is a good player, and he himself has decent fixtures coming up over the next 10 weeks or so...

In your situation, I would hold tight, especially if that move is for a hit... then maybe consider MIchu out after his fixtures dry up around GW9...

Michu out after his fixtures dry up was exactly what i had in mind. Yaya is a tricky one innit. He's done more than enough to convince me.

Get either Ba or HBA and you're ok. I''ll have to live with no New attacking coverage. Saylor is all i got.

In your example I would swap yaya out because I made money and I think he has outperformed himself, I factor rotation risk etc and make/dont the swap.
Eg I got rid of vanp with 5 Games left last season

    Schwarzer (Jaask)
    Demal Ivanovic Rafael (Gibbs, Clark)
Hazard (c) Bale (v) Santi Michu (maloney)
    Ba Teves Berbs

what do people think? that is my new wildcard team, took alot to take out RVP. Would really like BAE but can't justify the 6.5m. The rotation risk of UTD and city is too strong for me at the moment so that explains the lack of both utd and city coverage.

Can we see Buttner starting again this week for United? Well for one Evra played in the CL match and as Fergie is trying very hard to ease the tension between the two clubs, he may drop Evra for this reason as well. I really want to take a punt on Buttner, Zaba making the way. Thoughts?

Yeah, I know he isn't nailed on and will be rotated. But in a defense where I have 3 5.0s, Buttner can be worth the risk. If he doesn't plays a 5.0 defender can come on for him.

    Hi guys,

Have made my transfer this week Colocini to Baines as I saw colocini was about to drop in price although he still hasnt…

Now I have a problem with jelavic being injured and unlikely to play this week.

    My team is:

    Foster (federici)
    Williams Hangeland Baines Reid (barnett)
    Hazard Toure Michu Pienaar (Noble)
    Tevez Torres (jelavic)

What do you recommend doing this week? Taking a 4 point hit to get rid of jelavic or to keep him in the team?

    Thanks
