Emmanuel Adebayor is sidelined for Tottenham’s European clash with Lazio. Steve Clarke admits Goran Popov is unlikely to feature in West Brom’s home clash with Reading. Michael Kightly is hoping for a less defensive role with Stoke, while Oscar steals the headlines as Chelsea and Manchester United get their respective Champions League campaigns underway:

Emmanuel Adebayor has been ruled out of Tottenham’s Europa League clash with Lazio this evening. Andre Villas-Boas revealed in yesterday’s press conference that the Togo international has picked up a hamstring injury and will miss the White Hart Lane opener – Benoit Assou-Ekotto is also sidelined while the club assess his knee problem. Major question marks must now be placed against Adebayor’s availability for Sunday’s home clash against QPR, further enhancing Jermain Defoe’s chances of starting as he looks to add to his three goals and an assist from the opening four Gameweeks.

Steve Clarke gave Fantasy managers an early injury update yesterday. In particular, the West Brom boss spoke of Steven Reid and Goran Popov’s chances of making Saturday’s home clash with Reading:

“Steven’s been outside working with the medical staff towards being fit as soon as possible. He’s had a hamstring injury and he’s recovered to a point where it’s almost right, but you don’t want to take the next step too quickly. We will monitor it as the week goes on but we are still hopeful for the weekend. As for Goran, he had to go back to Kiev after the Fulham game and we will assess him when he’s back, but he is very doubtful for the weekend.”

The Popov prognosis is particularly good news for Fantasy managers, in the short-term at least. A start at left-back for the loan signing would have a major knock-on effect on the game time of Liam Ridgewell and possibly Gareth McAuley, with Ridgewell’s versatility meaning he is also capable of moving to the centre of defence. Both have been drafted in by plenty Fantasy managers ahead of a schedule that sees (RDG, QPR, SOT) in the next six and with clean sheets in both their first two at the Hawthorns, more investment can be expected.

Michael Kightly has admitted he’s had to rein in his attacking instincts for Stoke after a tough opening start to the season:

“I am having to play a bit more defensive than I would like, but we have had a tough start with our games and sometimes you have to do that for the team. We’ve played top sides at home and played at Wigan where they play a different system. Hopefully, against the so-called lesser teams at home we can be a bit more free-flowing and attacking. When the big clubs come, you know you aren’t going to have as much possession and their full-backs play advanced, so if you don’t track them back they will punish you. You are thinking about their full-back and stopping him scoring rather than thinking of getting past him to create a goal.”

Despite facing home clashes with Arsenal and City, Tony Pulis’ side remain unbeaten after four Gameweeks, with Kightly still managing to average five points per game in FPL. Trips to Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the next four is likely to have the Potters on the back foot once again before the fixture list begins to favour Stoke from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Manchester United 1 Galatasaray 0
Sir Alex made three changes at the back for the visit of Galatasaray. David De Gea was given the nod in goal, Jonny Evans replaced Rio Ferdinand in central defence and Patrice Evra reclaimed the left-back berth from Alexander Buttner. Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa were both handed starts, having been rested for the weekend match with Wigan. Kagawa supplied the assist for Michael Carrick to notch the only goal of a game that saw Darren Fletcher return to action after a lengthy lay-off, replacing Paul Scholes with just over 10 minutes remaining.

United’s spot-kick problems continued last night, though. Nani’s failed attempt against the Turkish side, following on from Javier Hernandez and Van Persie’s misses against Wigan and Southampton respectively means United have now failed to score with their last three penalties. While Wayne Rooney looks likely to remain number one for penalties when he returns from injury, Ferguson admitted Van Persie should have taken last night’s effort, suggesting the Dutchman is first in line until Rooney returns.

“I think he (Nani) just ran and grabbed the ball. I thought Robin should have taken it, to be honest with you.I think we will have to decide before the game. That was my fault, I should have done that.”

Chelsea 2 Juventus 2
It was all about Oscar last night as the young Brazilian made a sensational Champions League debut for the defending champions. Handed a starting role alongside Eden Hazard and Ramires in the attacking midfield three, the young Brazilian fired a superb brace against Juventus to announce his intentions to Fantasy managers. Just as we begin to perhaps consider him as a differential, he was then withdrawn on 74 minutes for Juan Mata, with Roberto Di Matteo admitting post-match:

“It was a bad tackle on Oscar before he came off. He had a knock on his ankle and we will assess him tomorrow.”

In other injury news, Chelsea were without the services of Daniel Sturridge for last night’s match – the club revealed via their official twitter stream that the forward was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

      Keeping. Was going to bench him this week anyway. Was planning to play him next week but if he's not fit have a decent backup. Best 4.5 option by miles so not wasting a transfer getting rid and then getting him back.

      Purely neutral observations:

      The first one he had a bad 1st touch and recovered well, although was somewhat fortuitous that Carrick made that run.

      Second one he did well physically but didn't control it cleanly and nearly gave possession away.

        Fair point on the first one, was simply highlighting he set up the only goal.

        Second one, that touch was excellent, bit of a guess in passing but didn't really matter.

      He was as good as Nani yesterday mate. My opinion. I can counter your 2 GIF's with 5 of my own but i will not make that effort. I have no intention to put down what Kagawa did yesterday. Just, Nani stepped it up yesterday. His first touch was massive. Infact, as i said, i loved the interplay between specifically these two players.

        Just from what i can recollect, put Evra through twice. Once when Evra almost pulled off a Buttner. Second when Evra crossed and RVP was maybe 5 yards from tapping it in. His corner to Vidic, laid it on the plate for Nemanja to score (Yes, he beat the first defender). Put Shinji through as well.

        No need to do what i did there, just thought he really was back to the Good Nani. The one who destroyed Arsenal at the Emirates in the CL two years ago. I hate the bad Nani, but i still am convinced he's our best winger. He is the most complete out of the three anyways.

      You can't compare last season's in form Ba to this year Ba as well. He is clearly not happy at Newcastle. Pardew also said that Ba may leave in January. I can see him getting benched or not playing central striker this week too.

          He started almost all the games last season, but did not get to play the central striker. That is why he is unhappy. Then getting benched made him more angry as well. I can't see Pardew dropping Cisse or playing him out of position because he is clearly the favoured striker. Ba might be a victim.

          zaba rotation risk and cuellar out for 2 weeks, when he comes back he has: Man C (a) new (h) stoke (a) ful (a) everton (a) which i personally dont think theres a clean sheet in any of them?

    Repost, stuck at bottom of last page.

    Might be thinking too far ahead but would like some opinions.
    GW7, would it be a better idea to do:

    A) Saylor -> Boyce
    B) Saylor -> Hangeland/Hughes
    C) Fletcher -> Berbatov

    With A & B, would play Fletcher away vs. City and with C would play Demel at home vs. Arsenal

    Whats peroples thoughts on Yaya? I never liked Yaya as a FF prospect but thinking of getting him in for Nasri. Only guaranteed City midfielder and seems to be more attacking this year.

      I was wholly against getting him pre-season, but have to say he is easily the best option from City's midfield. Gets forward loads and even when he plays deep, goes on those lung busting runs. Can see why Barca let him go after his performance vs. Real - great player but his passing is quite loose. Still, if I could afford him I would get him in for the season.

      I think Tevez should be enough from City. Yaya might have to now sit back deep, as Mancini is not happy with his defense and may tell Yaya to just drop back and stop anyone from getting in the box. Especially as they are playing Arsenal, I don't see Yaya scoring big this GW.

    Hey guys, not been here for a while since I've just moved to a new house back at uni and don't have Internet yet. Would really appreciate some help though after another shocking week and a few injuries. How does this look for a WC team?

    Begovic Foster
    Baines Nelsen Gallas Demel Clark
    Hazard Bale Dyer Ramirez/Lallana Kacaniklic
    RVP Tevez Ba

    Team value is a bit low but that leaves 0 in the bank.

      Like it apart from Gallas pick. Go for Saylor or Boyce. Ramirez over Lallana imo, looks like he will become a very good prospect.

        Yeah not sure about Gallas myself, might look elsewhere. Their fixtures are still pretty good though.

        Other option I've thought of looks like:

        A. Ramirez + Ba
        B. Ben Arfa + Lambert

          Defintaely A. Gives you the easy option to trade Ba for Defoe/Fletcher/Berbatov in gw7 once Newcastle go on a poor run of fixtures.

      gibbs has the chance of an assist but no cleanie. Hughes has the chance of a cleanie, but little else.

      When it comes to it the bread and butter of a defender is cleanies so I think Hughes has the edge.

      I just wouldnt wildcard now...fixtures are set to change in the next few weeks for lots of teams...eg Stokes get a lot better soon and Chelsea's get a lot worse .

      There are too many meh players there for my liking. What's your current team?

      If you've already pressed the trigger then stick to that gk combo and Sterling is the best cheap mid option. Baines is a season keeper as well. But I wouldn't go for Podolski until gwk 7.
