Luis Suarez isn’t everyone’s favourite player. Impromptu goalkeeping, the Patrice Evra incident and a baffling vendetta against woodwork comprise the newsworthy misadventures of a man equally distinguished by his managers’ favour and the public contempt. But whilst his unequivocal admirers might be restricted to the Kop and the carpentry trade, Fantasy managers can ill afford to be too picky with their heroes in a game that measures virtue purely in terms of points.

A stuttering start to the season can be excused in a team unsettled by a wearying saga of tactical and managerial revolutions on Merseyside, and if the optimism that attended Brendan Rodgers’ arrival has been somewhat subdued by Liverpool’s unflattering league position, strong performances against Sunderland and United in recent weeks suggest that the tide is turning.

In terms of shots on target and chances created over the last two weeks Liverpool are in the Champions League spots, and whilst new acquisition Joe Allen and youth team graduate Raheem Sterling have gelled seamlessly in Rogers’ favoured 4-3-3, the comparatively innocuous exploits of Fabio Borini only serve to cement Suarez’s role as the indispensable spearhead of the Liverpool attack.

Whilst Steven Fletcher, Dimitar Berbatov and Ricky Lambert have hogged the headlines and cast an understandable shade over Suarez’s recent performances, that darkness may provide a propitious advantage to those Fantasy managers armed with the sober and impartial light of OPTA stats. Indeed, Suarez has eclipsed his acclaimed competitors in several key areas, and whilst he shows no inclination to forfeit his post-hitting pre-eminence, his threat stats augur an imminent improvement of his already-respectable tally of two goals in five games.

Norwich’s combative home form could present a potential banana skin to Liverpool’s attacking aspirations next weekend, but their work-in-progress defence remains susceptible to breach and Suarez’s guile and energy will furnish a stern test – last season’s Carrow Road hat-trick, capped by a memorable 45-yard effort, stands testament to the Uruguayan’s capabilities. Back-to-back home games against a winless Stoke and an incontinent Reading then serve to complete a tempting trio of ties that should provide Rodgers’ resurgent Reds ample opportunity to jump start their campaign.

With the threat of rest and rotation now haunting the footsteps of the hitherto hegemonic Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie, Suarez’s comparative security becomes a conspicuous asset and, priced at 9.4 in the Fantasy Premier League and 9.6 in the Sky Sports game, canny investors may be set to reap rewards from Luis’ forthcoming weekends.

    a) Friedel -> Foster
    Dyer - > Pienaar

    b) Friedel -> Bego
    Dyer - > Pienaar / Felliani

    c) Fridel -> Bego
    Dyer -> Felliani

    d) Dyer -> Felliani / Pienaar
    Tevez -> Berba

    All are -4 points. Had been set on A, but after 5 hours of Tevez bashing on here, I’m finally cracking…

    Repost - lost in the previous article....

    Is having RVP and Kun excessive? in previous seasons I have tended to go with 2 big hitters and a cheapie (ala the RVP Kun Lambert trio this season) but there seems to be such a wealth of budget options in the mould of Fletcher, Ba, Berba etc that is making think that RVP & KUN in a forward line is just overkill this season. Thoughts?

      Kun is a good bet, if he plays most of the matches. But City have 4 forwards for 1 or 2 spots.

      I think the trio to have eventually will be RVP Kun Lambert/Berba. Fletcher has had 4 shots pretty much and scored 4 goals so he won't continue with that form. City and United will score the most goals this season, nothing suggests to me that it will be much different to last season. City's slow start is just a blip, they have too much quality. I've gone for RVP Suarez Berba for the next three weeks and then Kun in for Suarez after that, none of the other options guarantee 20 odd goal returns

    Anyone thiknig of getting rid of RVP when Rooney comes in? Surely Rooney will score some and goals will be shared, and there's always the risk of rotation. I'm thinking of getting Aguero in a few weeks for him, and it doesn't look that bad either.

    Thoughts on trebling up and bringing in Podolski to replace Tevez if he doesn't start this weekend? (to join Gibbs and Cazorla)?

    Arsenal have arguably the best overall run of games until we can play the Winter WC. I'd say having those 3 is a viable option.

      Well, it appears that he's creating more chances and having more attempts. But his conversion rate is slightly lower.

      But bearing in mind that his fixtures so far have been much more difficult than average, and he scored 11 and assisted 6 last year, he seems like a decent punt to me. I'm tempted to reverse my "keep Tevez and damn you all" policy and take a punt. Or a pint.

          ignore the random "those". How come you got rid of Tevez? Surely restin him for UCL etc just proves his very important to City and should do well long term

                Even if Tevez makes it onto the pitch at the weekend, there's no guarantee he will score.

                He played 120 minutes last night without scoring, so it does happen.

        No faith in Kags? I saw you benched him last week...he'll come good eventually...it's a shame he's perhaps so much in the shadow of RVP...much like the rest of Man Utd's team at the moment.

    If you compare average suarez this year against last year then there is a marginal uplift, but nothing sparkling:

    Last Year
    ICT Index:13.8
    Influence: 38
    Creativity:43
    Threat:57

    Touches
    Total:58.4
    Opponents Half:51.4
    Final Third:41.5
    Goals Involvement:37.8
    Penalty Area Touches:9.6
    Mins Per Goal:242.3
    Goal Attempts:4.1
    Goal Attempts In Box:3.2
    Shot Accuracy:36.7
    Goal Conversion:8.6

    This Year
    ICT Index:14.5
    Influence: 38
    Creativity:45
    Threat:62

    Touches
    Total:62.4
    Opponents Half:54.4
    Final Third:41.8
    Goals Involvement:50.0
    Penalty Area Touches:10.2
    Mins Per Goal:238
    Goal Attempts:6.0
    Goal Attempts In Box:3.8
    Shot Accuracy:26.7
    Goal Conversion:6.7

    So, slightly better overall, but even more inacurate shooting. That's a no from me.

    Even with the current OPTA stats proving Suarez is good, I still think 9.4 is too high for a striker who has not scored that many goals... Surely Fletcher/Lambert/Ba/Berba are better options...

      that's what stops me...for 9.4 I want nailed on - which granted he is, I also want goals, which he doesn't provide.

      Along with Defoe he has had the most chances in the box this season, but unlike Defoe, Suarez has squandered pretty much all of them. He is simply not a striker in the high scoring sense. Great player to watch, but a nightmare as a fantasy prospect. I've managed to talk myself back out of getting him, happy to stick with teenage dad Sterling for now.

        One goal is his max. That is the problem with him. He isn't big hitter by definition. Also plenty shots of target which means no BP

          that second point is key in FPL...the shots off target penalty in the bonus system makes him unownable at that price.

          I'm very tempted to get him in Metro and Sky though where they don't have such a penalty and his shots and pass play will get rewarded.

        Now that is very wise. With Johnson being used on the left behind Borini he is getting very far forward. Very good chance of assists....if Suarez can ever hit the target. Oh, how they could do with a tall energetic target man who can get the better of defenders...perhaps one with a pony tail?

    Nothing groundbreaking, but serves as a reminder that we should be wary of their assets at the minute.

    That includes RVP....

      I disagree about West Brom v Liverpool. Going by the last round West Brom are likely to play a weakened side and Liverpool's midweek side are gelling together nicely in the Europa league winning 4 of their 5 games so far. If West Brom play a first choice XI, then yes, but not with a weakened side

    my 2p on tevez.
    his competition for a place alongside aguero this saturday is balotelli (120 mins) and dzeko (50mins), plus dzeko played 70mins against arsenal while tevez was benched. we may be purely looking at tevez and missing the rest of the story. also remember how much mancini was praising tevez for how he rescued their away form last season with his partnership with aguero at the end.
    finally and maybe the only relevent point, the game is saturday, mancini himself says how much difference a 3 days rest makes compared to just 2 (dortmund is also on the wednesday, not tuesday). the problem is then sunderland being on the saturday after the wednesday dortmund game, back to the 2 day rest danger zone.
    hopeful (and slightly confused) tevez owner. what is different now from gw1? tevez had 3 men as competition and a couple of nice fixtures on the horizon. of course the 120mins is a worry, but maybe just looking at tevez is short sighted.

      THIS.
      I've been trying to say similar for a while now.
      And nothing has changed since GW1, he is still first choice but will suffer rotation, worth the odd missed game? We will find out.

        I'm getting Aguero in. Hopefully it'll solve some of the problem.

      He's also a good half-a-stone lighter than last season - can't hurt.

      I also think we have no sample size to make any sort of generalisations over priority order. Last season Tevez was a stroppy so and so, and off form, and wanted to leave, then went golfing came back and established himself as first choice. However this was when Balotelli was getting himself sent off, Dzeko was off the boil and even Aguero was slightly off form IIRC.

      So we really don't know.

      You've got a point there AB, he might just give Tevez a start even though he's played 120 minutes, not too sure on 60 minutes though, I think we'll have to wait for the press conference, but again, Mancini never hints at his squad. And getting Tevez out for just one week would be silly, considering his rise from his initial 9.0 and City's fixtures look good too. Surely he'll be playing Tevez with Aguero alot and that just increases his potential of getting more points.

        Kun and Tevez will start the Dortmund game for sure. Lets thing backwards.

        Now we go to the Fulham game, Kun was rested so he starts. Dzeko didn't start in the COC game so he is pole position to start.

        Logic says Dzeko and Kun starts at the w/e. Early sub for Dzeko probably for Tevez and Kun out if the game is won already earlier or if not then around 80min with Ballo coming in. Ballo could be the first men to be subbed in because he is more fresh than Tevez.

        So in all scenarios it looks like there is high probability that Tevez will be benched. Tevez owner here keeping him for at least one more GW.

      The one thing that is missing from your analysis is the possibility that Aguero plays alone up top with Silva in support as City try to bunker down and keep it very tight at the back. I still think/hope Tevez will start but there is no guarantee that Mancini will play any of Balotelli/Dzeko/Tevez

        This is what I think he'll do. An extra body in midfield, most probably Barry now he's fit again.

      History will be re-written this week.

      Dembele Sandro Bale Lennon Siggy/Dempsey is better than Carrick Kagawa Nani Giggs/Scoles at the moment imo

      Im keeping RVP but 2-2 imo

    I think the Tevez conundrum comes down more now to the international break.
    IF he is called up Argentina play Home then v Chile 4 days before the away game at West Brom
    So I imagine IF you keep him, you will get a sub appearance and a start, though whether its at Fulham or home to SUN is the question. I think he's gone for me....probably for a hit
