Canned pies may not be the only famous export of Fray Bentos for long if Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez carries on impressing in the Premier League. Born in the aforementioned Uruguayan town 21 years ago, this highly-rated attacking midfielder was signed by the south coast club at the eleventh hour of the summer transfer window for a club record £12m from Bologna.

His Premier League debut was something of a baptism of fire, coming on as a substitute during Arsenal’s 6-1 mauling of Nigel Adkins’ promoted side, but Ramirez’s talents were already in evidence. Positioned just behind lone striker Rickie Lambert, the new boy created one of the Saints’ best chances in the game with a fine pass, which Lambert ended up skewing wide.

More was to come in his first start, in Gameweek 5’s home hammering of Aston Villa. Once again slotted in just behind Lambert, he gained an assist and a respectable EA Sports Index tally in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game of 21; not quite enough for bonus points but an indication of his future Fantasy potential. Despite Southampton losing 3-1 to Everton in Gameweek 6 at Goodison last weekend, Ramirez continued to shine, playing the full 90 minutes and scoring his side’s only goal.

Throughout his fledgling career goals have been a hallmark of his play, scoring 12 in 58 appearances for Bologna during his two-year stint at the club, including eight in his final Serie A season. The indications are that he could even make double figures this term if Southampton continue to pursue their attacking style of play.

While among the priciest of Southampton midfielders at 6.0 in the FPL game, Ramirez still represents something of a bargain if he continues to play in “the hole”. He is currently the top midfielder for the Saints in terms of FPL points per game, with an average of 4.3. Priced at 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Uruguayan he is also proving profitable, notching 18 points after just two starts.

Intriguingly, Ramirez looks a strong differential across the Fantasy games – only 0.4% of FPL managers have currently acquired his services, while even less (0.3%) in the Sky Sports game have decided he’s worth a flutter. With a strong run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, (FUL, wha, TOT,wba, SWA, qpr) Lambert will no doubt pick up plenty of interest, affording Ramirez the chance to sneak under the radar and plunder the points until the bandwagon inevitably begins.

Thoughts on Cazorla > Gervinho on a free? Seems sideways and Cazorla could have had a goal and assist tonight himself but i am sure the extra money will come in handy somewhere down the line,,,,

I would think about it if i had 2fts and nothing to do with them. But that extra FT will come in handy somewhere down the line 😉

I could say the same thing about Gervinho in the last games. He "could" have scored 3-4 more goals. Get him now while he's playing as a Forward. Cheaper, OOP and getting points. What else do you want? 🙂

Think I'm gonna have to keep Tevez as he ought to start and just use one of my FTs to do Boyce > Wilson for the long term, leaving Hoilett to sort out next week as he's on the bench anyway.

    Foster (Bego)

Baines - Rangel - Wilson (Demel, Nelsen)

    Bale (c) - HBA - Michu - Nolan (Hoilett)

RVP - Tevez - Demba (vc)

...there's much I could do that would be much more exciting, involving Suarez/Chelsea and the like, but using two transfers ahead of the break just seems counter-productive. Slow and steady wins the race, right? 😛

Long time reader, first time poster 🙂

Have got a plan for next few weeks, but am undecided on the right set up for part of it:

    A) Bale, Morrisson, Cazorla, Mignolet (+4pt hit at some point)
    B) Gervinho, Toure, Cazorla, Mignolet
    C) Gervinho, Bale, Toure, Begovic (+2x 4pt hit over time)

Note A) would leave me with no City coverage...

    Any advice?

In the PL, City's strikers will almost always be Aguero plus one.

The plus one will usually be Tevez.

Whether you think Aguero is worth the extra money for this extra certainty is up to you.

The other slight extra you're getting with Aguero is pens (unless Balo is on the pitch)

People forget that most footballers are capable of playing twice a week. Most rotation is done to give other squad players playing time not to rest players.

City are playing the early kick off, after a very tough game, several players looked tired, notably ya Ya, that's 2 days rest.

why are people automatically assuming big returns from city players against sunderland?
they got 1 point out of 6 against them last season and from what i can see oneill likes to park that bus...

I have the latter 2 and am very happy that I do.

If I see that Jonty I will kill him. This is the 3rd week the Scouts have shone the spotlight on Ramirez and frankly I'm getting bloody sick of it.

Meh, get over it, 0.4 ownership and I knew about him since day one, the fact that he's performed means immediate interest...I'd start to care if he was getting .3 rises weekly.

          just venting Jonty.

Had Ramirez for 2 weeks. His ownership has gone from 0.2% to 0.5% in the time I've owned him. And he;s been highlighted 3 times since I bought.

I have RvP, Jelavic and Berba up front, very happy with that. I got Ramirez the same week I got Berba, so that ruled out getting Lambert last week, so I got Jelly in for Tevez instead.
