When researching players for Watchlists or Scout Reports, the term “Product of the Ajax Youth Academy” always tends to pique your interest that little bit more. It almost serves as a seal of approval – an indication that the Dutch side’s finishing school has helped refine their talent from an early age, affording them a versatility and extra edge on their Premier League counterparts. Such is the case with Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.

Despite being linked with the likes of Barcelona this summer, the Belgian opted for White Hart Lane and arrived in London having captained the Amsterdam outfit to the Eredivisie title last term. Vertonghen also picked up the Dutch Footballer of the Year Award for 2011/12 after grabbing eight goals in 31 league appearances and has quickly established himself as a crucial component of the new-look Spurs under Andre Villas-Boas.

There’s no denying it was a slow start for Vertonghen this season. The opening three Gameweeks returned a mere three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points as the London outfit struggled to adjust to a change in system and personnel, with a host of new arrivals taking time to gel. Three back-to-back Premier League wins, including last weekend’s 3-2 triumph at Old Trafford, however, have persuaded plenty Fantasy managers that Spurs are now a viable source of points once again and with his opener against United following on from a goal in the Capital One Cup win at Carlisle three days earlier, Vertonghen’s keen eye for goal has come to the fore.

His aforementioned versatility offers Villas-Boas plenty options, too. Fielded at left-back in the last couple of matches, Vertonghen’s shift from the centre has afforded Steven Caulker a chance alongside William Gallas in the heart of defence as the Londoners plug the gap caused by injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Naughton.

With a couple of FPL bonus points also accrued last weekend, the Belgian, with a mere 2.9% ownership, is shaping up to be a handy differential over the next four Gameweeks. Priced at 6.4 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports game, Vertonghen is now handed three home matches in the next four (AVL, CHE, sou, WIG) to continue his recent resurgence – if he can replicate his returns in the previous campaign in Amsterdam, we may have ourselves a viable contender to the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Leighton Baines as our principle Fantasy defender.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

            made 3 xfers last week. One of which was Fletcher in, who ended up getting 8 points. this cancelled out the 3 tranfers i made. Berb got injured which screwed me over, Cuellar didnt play and nor did Guthrie or gunter. So even if i had made no transfers i would of ended up with the same points. But yeah, i see newcastle's run very promising so ive doubled up.

          Idk about all that. Vermaelen does well at LB, i think thats his position at Belgium national side since Verthongen/Kompany plays CB there. What i meant was that they have a lot of the same qualities and resemble eachother quite a bit on the pitch and IRL too lol

    Not to put the pigeon amongst the cats but I don't think Gervinho will start tomorrow. Tough physical away game I think it will be Giroud - more of a natural out - and either Chamberlain or Ramsey on the right (they might both play). Obv. a hard decision as he's scoring and making goals but just my pennorth on it, I don't think he'll start.

        I am! But that's not informing my thinking here at all - just been surfing forums and twitter for a while. Big school of thought that Giroud will start. And then it's about whether Gervinho is picked on the right against Ramsey or Chamberlain - and that is less clear cut... but I don't think he'll be 'centre forward' at any rate (not that he ever really was that)

      It's not typically the way Wenger plays though. When they go up against physical sides he rarely looks to match them in a physical way. Tries to outclass them is more the Arsene cat's way.

        I think that's true, but I also think he's wary enough of Allardycean tactics to include some extra height vs. Carroll at corners. I also think that Giroud will be the starting centre forward, certainly away from home, in the long-run - and that could easily be pushed ahead with any week now really.

      He was subbed off early along with Podolski on wed night, thats usually an indicator that he will start the next game probably..but i do understand your logic with Giroud too.

      Hes scoring goals. I think Arsen would be silly to bench him.

      If they go a few goals up i can see Giroud coming on at the 60 min mark. Im more than likely going to Cap him as hes banging them in. He came off after about 75 mins in the CL.

      You can usually tell a lot from who's doing what in the training photos that usually come out from Arsenal the afternoon before a game. So all I would say is maybe wait for them before transferring him in.

    Ok so now that Berba is likely to miss out, what do ye reckon is the best option..

    A. Start Berba anyway with Sterling first sub

    B. Berbatov -> Lambert, no hit

    C. Berbatov -> Lambert & Yaya -> Bale, 4 point hit..
