When researching players for Watchlists or Scout Reports, the term “Product of the Ajax Youth Academy” always tends to pique your interest that little bit more. It almost serves as a seal of approval – an indication that the Dutch side’s finishing school has helped refine their talent from an early age, affording them a versatility and extra edge on their Premier League counterparts. Such is the case with Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.

Despite being linked with the likes of Barcelona this summer, the Belgian opted for White Hart Lane and arrived in London having captained the Amsterdam outfit to the Eredivisie title last term. Vertonghen also picked up the Dutch Footballer of the Year Award for 2011/12 after grabbing eight goals in 31 league appearances and has quickly established himself as a crucial component of the new-look Spurs under Andre Villas-Boas.

There’s no denying it was a slow start for Vertonghen this season. The opening three Gameweeks returned a mere three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points as the London outfit struggled to adjust to a change in system and personnel, with a host of new arrivals taking time to gel. Three back-to-back Premier League wins, including last weekend’s 3-2 triumph at Old Trafford, however, have persuaded plenty Fantasy managers that Spurs are now a viable source of points once again and with his opener against United following on from a goal in the Capital One Cup win at Carlisle three days earlier, Vertonghen’s keen eye for goal has come to the fore.

His aforementioned versatility offers Villas-Boas plenty options, too. Fielded at left-back in the last couple of matches, Vertonghen’s shift from the centre has afforded Steven Caulker a chance alongside William Gallas in the heart of defence as the Londoners plug the gap caused by injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Naughton.

With a couple of FPL bonus points also accrued last weekend, the Belgian, with a mere 2.9% ownership, is shaping up to be a handy differential over the next four Gameweeks. Priced at 6.4 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports game, Vertonghen is now handed three home matches in the next four (AVL, CHE, sou, WIG) to continue his recent resurgence – if he can replicate his returns in the previous campaign in Amsterdam, we may have ourselves a viable contender to the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Leighton Baines as our principle Fantasy defender.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Any Tottenham fans here? What are the wievs on possible gametime for Ade or is Defoe nailed on?

I don't think even Tottenham fans can answer this. While Defoe is playing well then he should play but sooner or later Ade must have to feature.

This has me scared to death. I thought for sure I could count on Defoe for one more week, but I am totally uncertain now. I'm seriously considering trading him out, but that seems crazy at home to Villa...

why would you do that? he'll still start imo. he's not the problem, it's the problem with the tactic of a lone striker with HIM being the only striker. he's a poacher but he cant really hold the ball as he doesn't have the physical to do so.

Defoe is still the first choice if a lone striker is to be chosen. Unless AVB decides to play a different formation.

AVB will continue with one upfront and Dempsey/ Siggy behind the striker...
Defoe will start this weekend and if Ade comes on it will probably only be for 15-20 minutes at the end.

^^^This is exactly what will happen.^^^

Adebayor will eventually replace Defoe once fit and is therefore a better long term investment.

Ok so now that Berba is likely to miss out, what do ye reckon is the best option..

    A. Start Berba anyway with Sterling first sub

    B. Berbatov -> Lambert, no hit

    C. Berbatov -> Lambert & Yaya -> Bale, 4 point hit..

Looking for a few votes please 🙂

Yaya in for Ben Arfa considering I have no Man City cover now I've shipped out Tevez?

Other options are Hazard (Only Chel), Cazorla (Only Ars) and Michu (good fixtures next two)

Would then mean no Newcastle coverage...

also if you get him now for the next gameweek take note that his price may drop during the international break, especially if he really doesnt play tomorrow. Not a good use of your WC if you are already losing value on him.

Seriously reconsidering playing my WC next week, I reckon I may be able to get away with a couple of transfers here and there and save it for when its more urgent.

Anyone else who was thinking of using it next week having second thoughts?

In betting news, going for a Inverness, Bremen, St Etienne, Sevilla four fold for 22/1 🙂

OK so, need a bit of advice.

    My team

    Foster - Fed
    baines, A.Cole, Williams, Clyne, Demel
    Hazard, yaya, Michu, Noble, Kakak
    Tev, RVP, Graham.

    1.7 in bank 1 ft

    Thinking of doing

    noble > Sterling
    +
williasm - vertong for (4 point hit)

That would be a baines, A.cole, Vert backline - too much cash there?

Also gonna give Michu and Graham 2 more weeks, as of fixtures.

Advice please, I have 1 FT and I'm considering 5 options:

      A) Lescott to A Cole

      B) Lescott to Baines

      C) Kagawa to Bale (c)

      D) Kagawa to Gervinho

      E) Save transfer and hope that Kagawa and one of Lescott/Ridgewell/McCartney play

I'm top of my league and my nearest rival has Cole and Ivanovic. The guy in 3rd place has Bale.

      De Gea - Jaasskelainen
Ridgewell, McCartney, A Williams, Hangeland, Lescott
      Kagawa, Hazard, Michu, Routledge, Nolan
      Torres, Jelavic (c), Podolski
