When researching players for Watchlists or Scout Reports, the term “Product of the Ajax Youth Academy” always tends to pique your interest that little bit more. It almost serves as a seal of approval – an indication that the Dutch side’s finishing school has helped refine their talent from an early age, affording them a versatility and extra edge on their Premier League counterparts. Such is the case with Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.

Despite being linked with the likes of Barcelona this summer, the Belgian opted for White Hart Lane and arrived in London having captained the Amsterdam outfit to the Eredivisie title last term. Vertonghen also picked up the Dutch Footballer of the Year Award for 2011/12 after grabbing eight goals in 31 league appearances and has quickly established himself as a crucial component of the new-look Spurs under Andre Villas-Boas.

There’s no denying it was a slow start for Vertonghen this season. The opening three Gameweeks returned a mere three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points as the London outfit struggled to adjust to a change in system and personnel, with a host of new arrivals taking time to gel. Three back-to-back Premier League wins, including last weekend’s 3-2 triumph at Old Trafford, however, have persuaded plenty Fantasy managers that Spurs are now a viable source of points once again and with his opener against United following on from a goal in the Capital One Cup win at Carlisle three days earlier, Vertonghen’s keen eye for goal has come to the fore.

His aforementioned versatility offers Villas-Boas plenty options, too. Fielded at left-back in the last couple of matches, Vertonghen’s shift from the centre has afforded Steven Caulker a chance alongside William Gallas in the heart of defence as the Londoners plug the gap caused by injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Naughton.

With a couple of FPL bonus points also accrued last weekend, the Belgian, with a mere 2.9% ownership, is shaping up to be a handy differential over the next four Gameweeks. Priced at 6.4 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports game, Vertonghen is now handed three home matches in the next four (AVL, CHE, sou, WIG) to continue his recent resurgence – if he can replicate his returns in the previous campaign in Amsterdam, we may have ourselves a viable contender to the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Leighton Baines as our principle Fantasy defender.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Afternoon lads. Any Newcastle or Swansea news? Have seen the Berba news, still gonna start him and let auto-subs kick in. Given the Arsenal news, if I owned Nolan I'd be half-tempted to captain him.

        to what, captain Nolan?

I don't own him, so I want be doing it, but if they have Verm AND Mert out they will be seriously weakend as they will have no one to stand up to the Big Dog

R.E the Arsenal news, if that's about players having flu, posters on here earlier agreed that Wenger was talking past tense - that Verm missed the city game with flu, Coquelin missed one too or something. Past tense misunderstood was the conclusion. Verm et al fit for this weekend we hope

OK with the news that Berbatov is likely not to play, should I transfer him out for Suarez?

He'll no doubt drop .2 - .3 during the INT break and Suarez looks good for the next couple of GWs. Got RVP Tevez as the other 2.

Why will Berb drop during the international break? His fixtures GW8 and 9 are kind and he'll have extended rest to be fit. I'm sticking with Ba this GW then swapping Berb in.

Please let me know what’s wrong with this team! I’m fairly content with the defence + forwards (also happy to keep Tevez for now), but midfield is looking weak. Hazard is out for Silva if he doesn’t perform (very) well against Norwich. What else? Sahin –> Fellaini/Michu or Kebe –> ? No available cash atm but Hazard –> Silva would give me 0.6. Also missing Spurs cover…

    Foster – Begovic

    Gibbs – Baines – Cuellar – Demel – Clyne

    Cazorla – Hazard – Sahin – Sterling – Kebe

Van Persie – Tevez – Berbatov

    Thanks in advance!

      Haz

Don't fancy Bale. Trying to stop myself taking a wild punt on Michu. Think there is a very strong case for Tevez - don't expect him to run riot, but I think he is the mostly likely to get some points, whereas midfield options could be a bit all or nothing.

    A) Pienaar > Bale/Dempsey, Tevez > Ba

    Bego - Foster

    Cuellar - Demel - Gibbs - McAuley - Nelsen

    Michu / Fellaini / Pienaar / Cazorla / Yaya

But if Toure is a doubt and you can afford Mata then that seems a worthy transfer this week.

The international break could change things with an injury to RVP meaning you may have the opportunity to get Aguero.

Mannone will only be nailed on until Szcz comes back so 1-2 games.
Sagna could come back v Norwich but with Jenkinson playing well i could see AW waiting until the League cup game with Reading on 30th Oct to get his match sharpness up. If he plays well then he will probably play most leagues games after that imo

Wenger on Szczesny injury: 'He is 2-3 weeks away from practicing normally. It takes 5 or 6 weeks to heal'

and i read somewhere Sagna is back playing with the reserve or U-21's ..so it depends on how Wenger wants to deal with it once he fit again. Jenkinson has been decent though.

So little love for Defoe around here, despite the fixtures. Are people just afraid about Ade or generally think that he is a bad option?

Im really fussed about this one, last time I went for common sense over gut I ended up with McClean over Nolan :D. Really feel a Defoe rampage coming up this weekend 🙂

this article mentions Smalling being back soon, that may be his biggest rotation risk in the future, although he will play on sunday, that much is sure 🙂

Smalling will probably help out the CB situation with ferdinand not able to play every game and Evans also a bit hurt.

based on the fact that he is now fully fit and played brilliantly on Tuesday and is firmly in the first XI. Mata will play. I am thinking about gettign him in, he did well for me last season.

More proof that Vermaelen, Walcott and Coquelin are all fit. Mertesacker faces a late fitness test, i expect he will start.
