When researching players for Watchlists or Scout Reports, the term “Product of the Ajax Youth Academy” always tends to pique your interest that little bit more. It almost serves as a seal of approval – an indication that the Dutch side’s finishing school has helped refine their talent from an early age, affording them a versatility and extra edge on their Premier League counterparts. Such is the case with Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.

Despite being linked with the likes of Barcelona this summer, the Belgian opted for White Hart Lane and arrived in London having captained the Amsterdam outfit to the Eredivisie title last term. Vertonghen also picked up the Dutch Footballer of the Year Award for 2011/12 after grabbing eight goals in 31 league appearances and has quickly established himself as a crucial component of the new-look Spurs under Andre Villas-Boas.

There’s no denying it was a slow start for Vertonghen this season. The opening three Gameweeks returned a mere three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points as the London outfit struggled to adjust to a change in system and personnel, with a host of new arrivals taking time to gel. Three back-to-back Premier League wins, including last weekend’s 3-2 triumph at Old Trafford, however, have persuaded plenty Fantasy managers that Spurs are now a viable source of points once again and with his opener against United following on from a goal in the Capital One Cup win at Carlisle three days earlier, Vertonghen’s keen eye for goal has come to the fore.

His aforementioned versatility offers Villas-Boas plenty options, too. Fielded at left-back in the last couple of matches, Vertonghen’s shift from the centre has afforded Steven Caulker a chance alongside William Gallas in the heart of defence as the Londoners plug the gap caused by injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Naughton.

With a couple of FPL bonus points also accrued last weekend, the Belgian, with a mere 2.9% ownership, is shaping up to be a handy differential over the next four Gameweeks. Priced at 6.4 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports game, Vertonghen is now handed three home matches in the next four (AVL, CHE, sou, WIG) to continue his recent resurgence – if he can replicate his returns in the previous campaign in Amsterdam, we may have ourselves a viable contender to the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Leighton Baines as our principle Fantasy defender.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

More proof that Vermaelen, Walcott and Coquelin are all fit. Mertesacker faces a late fitness test, i expect he will start.

I have one free transfer, want to do Yaya -> Silva and Hazard -> Mata.

Was thinking of doing Yaya to Mata this week so I would have Mata and Hazard against Norwich but no City coverage. Would do Hazard -> Silva after international break. Sound like a good or bad idea?

All depends on whether you see Toure playing. If he's out then you maximise on the Chelsea/Norwich game. At present you have a good spread between two good fixtures.

Definitely mileage in the Hazard->Silva transfer, but then I wouldn't want Toure and Silva. The irony of your next two transfers swapping players between teams.

I have made 4 transfers each week, losing of course 12 points each time, and have also played my wildcard - BUT, My team value is already 104.3 mil, and that's how i'm stacked up so well - made good investments to build up my kitty.

Think it will serve me well in the long run, it's a marathon not a sprint.

I've 295 points, and my tranfers have cost me 44 points

Of course i understand your sceptism, backed up by fact too, but having players like Baines, Vertonghen, Cole and Ivanovic who will average 5/6 points all year long is certainly gonna keep me gradually hiking up the rankings. I hope 😉

I was wondering the same about Aguero (c)

Kun would be a grand captain this week. The only reason I imagine talk about him is muted is because no one owns him, and he's too expensive to transfer in, especially when RVP is already in everyone's team.

RVP is? He's not in mine. Huge waste of money imo. The only justification is I think as a hedge against bad captaincy choices but that's still not enough reason in my view.

Mainly because Aguero is back, I imagine.

it looks like Aguero could be rested this week for Balo. As Mancini suggested Tevez and Balo will both probably play

Sunderland are unbeaten, and very hard to break down

I know, but a fitter player is probably still the better option. It looks like Aguero may be spent after a few games in a row after coming back from injury.

Most people bandwagon sold him last week when he was apparently 100% nailed onto the bench.

(To be fair, if you swapped him for Suarez, not too shabby a move).

Guess this is a bit of a crunch week though - he needs good gametime or his position as #2 striker looks gone.

      1. Threat of rotation.
      2. The result against Sunderland last year - Martin O'Neill is very good at setting his teams up defensively against attacking teams like Man City. They haven't conceded more than 1 goal apart from one game so far this season as well.

I have Tevez and I won't be captaining him this week for these reasons. I'd be more inclined to captain Fletcher to be honest based on how poor City have been defensively this season.

what do people think of that team? (long-term)

    Jussi/Szczesny (when fit again)
    Baines - Ridgewell - Vertonghen - (Figueroa - Davies)
    Michu - Mata - Cazorla - Bale - Fellaini
    Fletcher - Berbatov - Suarez

Might save a transfer this week, always handy to have 2 over an international break.

That said, I'm half-tempted to get Puncheon in for Guthrie while I don't have anything super-pressing to do.

Or perhaps upgrade a defender (Cuellar, Davies, Hughes or Demel - 1.5m in the bank)

    Stick or twist??
