Wayne Rooney provides a pair of assists and proclaims his new “midfield role”. Robin Van Persie risks the wrath of Alan Pardew and the potential of an FA enquiry. Spurs’ winning run stretches to four matches against Villa, with Hugo Lloris’ debut producing a first clean sheet of the season. Southampton earn a draw with Fulham via an unlikely source, while Stoke and Liverpool play out a goalless draw at Anfield…

Wayne Rooney
Starting alongside Robin Van Persie in the league for the first time this season, he outgunned the Dutchman with a pair of assists and maximum bonus points. While Van Persie also provided an assist, his owners may be a little concerned with yesterday’s events – clearly, Rooney is capable of denting his prospects in any given Gameweek. With an FPL price of 11.7 to Van Persie’s 13.5, Rooney certainly is the more budget-friendly and also appeals as a differential – he is owned by less than 6% teams in comparison to the Dutchman’s 31%. A home clash against Stoke now affords both forwards the chance of points – yesterday’s win means United have now scored two or more goals in their last six matches.

Post-match, Van Persie’s owners were given cause for both optimism and apprehension. Rooney took to twitter to reveal he is more than content in a new, more withdrawn role – a clear indication that the former Arsenal man is primed to be the focal point of the most potent attack in the Premier League right now. Rooney tucked in behind the new boy and admitted:

“Great win today. Really enjoying my new midfield role. Always involved in the game.”

Van Persie was also at the centre of controversy yesterday after allegedly lashing out at Yohan Cabaye. The off-the-ball incident didn’t appear to be picked by Howard Webb at the time – if it doesn’t feature in the referee’s post-match report, it could, potentially, see the United man charged for violent conduct if the FA decide to take action – that would lead to a three-match ban. After the game, Alan Pardew was quick to highlight this and called for the authorities to step in:

“He has looked at Yohan and he has elbowed him. I think that perhaps needs to be looked at, if I am honest. I actually thought Yohan wouldn’t have gone down if he hadn’t done something. I didn’t see it myself, but I have obviously seen it on the replay and it looks like he has looked at him and put his elbow there.”

The United Defence
The return of David De Gea helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to their first away clean sheet of the season. While the Spaniard will always be prone to his manager’s keeper rotation policy, Jonny Evans put forward a decent case for investment with a 14-point haul against Newcastle. With Nemanja Vidic sidelined for a couple of months, the Irishman could be a worthy mid-price option to consider; the home game against Stoke looks prosperous and once they get Chelsea and Arsenal out the way, United’s fixtures brighten from Gameweek 11 onwards. Rafael still looks the front runner for our attentions, however. The right-back has shown great enterprise going forward and, right now, has just the returning Chris Smalling for competition.

Jose Fonte
The only Southampton player to play every minute of the season so far, Fonte leapt onto Fantasy radars with both his side’s goals against Fulham yesterday. While his cut-price valuation may appeal as a cheap defender, the Saints’ porous backline shows little sign of abating, however; they have now conceded 20 goals in the opening seven Gameweeks, more than any other side so far. Bearing in mind that Fonte had previously registered five FPL points in the first six matches, Fonte is unlikely to pick up many savvy investors, is spite of a reasonable run of fixtures to follow. Interestingly, Danny Fox fetched his first assist for Southampton in Sunday’s game. The left-back who earned nine assists in the Championship last season looks to be a more reliable source of attacking returns in the Southampton defence but his 4.4 price tag is proving an obstacle to investment.

Southampton Injuries
Both Nathaniel Clyne and Gaston Ramirez missed Sunday’s game with thigh injuries. While Clyne’s sounds like a simple dead leg, the Uruguayan appears to have suffered complications that would make him more of a doubt for a return against West Ham in Gameweek 8. Nigel Adkins also suffered the loss of Frazer Richardson early on in Sunday’s game and brought us this on his injury situation post-match…

“It looks like he (Frazer) has pulled his thigh muscle so we will get a scan on that and see the extent of the tear of the muscle….Nathaniel has a dead leg that he picked up at Everton and had to come off which he hasn’t recovered from. I would suggest that as he hasn’t played today he wont be fit to go away with England….Gaston has a similar thing with a dead leg that he picked up on Thursday but that was quite a serious one because the muscle swelled up as there was nowhere for the blood to go which led to a lot of pressure on his thigh. He had to have a couple of days in hospital to relief the pressure there so obviously he won’t be joining up with Uruguay now in the international break.”

John Arne Riise
He may be pricier than the rest of the Fulham defenders but the Norwegian seems to be flourishing this season. Last term, with Clint Dempsey playing in front of him on the flank, Riise tended to play a little deeper due to the US international’s penchant for drifting into the centre but with the Cottagers afforded a more natural width by the likes of Alex Kacaniklic, the left-back is picking up the points. An assist in yesterday’s draw at St Mary’s took his tally to three so far – only two less than last season’s total of five and with three home games and a trip to Reading in the next five, the attacking returns could be set to continue.

Dimitar Berbatov and Mladen Petric
Martin Jol revealed post-match that both strikers were very close to making the game. Indeed, it appears that early in the week, Berbatov declared himself fit only to rule himself out as the week progressed…

“Berbatov was very close…He told me on Monday that he would play but then on Friday he said he didn’t know if he wanted to take the risk. But both he and Mladen Petric did a test on Sunday in London. If Petric had passed it, then he may have been on the bench, in Berbatov’s case he might have started, but it wasn’t to be.”

Asmir Begovic
The Potters keeper moved up to third in the FPL goalkeeper rankings after returning two bonus points and his third clean sheet of the season – all the more impressive, bearing in mind he has already faced Arsenal, City and Chelsea before yesterday’s trip to Anfield. Although Tony Pulis’ side now face a visit to Old Trafford, their fixture schedule from Gameweek 9 onwards is surely set to see Begovic and the Stoke defence pick up plenty of new suitors, with the home/away rotation with West Brom looking particularly appealing over the next few matches. The only possible caveat to this is that Pulis may find himself without Robert Huth for three matches – the German was alleged to have stamped on Luis Suarez early on in yesterday’s game and, if that is picked up by the FA, a suspension looms for Huth.

The Spurs Defence
Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to drop Brad Friedel and hand Hugo Lloris his first league appearance coincided with a first clean sheet of the season for the London outfit. Although the Spurs boss admitted after the game he is still likely to rotate, Lloris looked far more at home with the high defensive line and yesterday’s display was the slickest Spurs have looked in the league so far.

Steven Caulker’s opener will propel the centre-half onto Fantasy radars. Since Villas-Boas reshuffled his side at half-time in the Gameweek 5 win over QPR, Caulker has produced an assist, a goal and a centre-half – an average of almost seven points per game. Much depends on whether he can keep his place once the likes of Benoit Assou-Ekotto or Kyle Naughton return to over cover at left-back; with Jan Vertonghen expected to return to the middle, Caulker could face a battle to retain a regular role, given that William Gallas has played every minute of the season to this point.

Aaron Lennon
The winger kept the likes of Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey in the shade yesterday after opening his account in the 2-0 win over Villa. Lennon’s pace looks a real factor in the fact he has started all seven matches under the new manager – he has missed just nine minutes of the season and has picked up 29 FPL points so far, a tally bettered only by Bale and Jermain Defoe for Spurs.

Emmanuel Adebayor
The Togo striker made a return to fitness and came off the bench to replace Defoe on 68 minutes. It now remains to be seen how Villas-Boas rotates his options up front. Right now his system would seem to only allow one of Defoe or Adebayor to play and with the England man in the ascendency, Defoe would seem likely to retain his start. Adebayor will surely see significant pitch time and would seem better equipped to lead the line and these doubts surely dent Defoe’s potential and will give cause for concern for would-be investors. Such factors contribute to Gareth Bale’s appeal as the main target for coverage of Tottenham’s attacking potential.

The ref, seemingly, didn't see it. The story is in all the papers today. I've only seen one replay of it, but at the time I thought he was a very lucky boy to stay on the pitch so I'd expect the FA to at least look into it.

Probably should have been a yellow. I know that would have made red but the incident will be looked at in isolation. Personally can't see a ban.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Tiote's studs in challenge on Cleverley early on. Pardew wants the FA to look at Van Persie and yet Tiote's challenge which was missed looked like a possible red too.

I don't believe so - I think Cleverley won a free-kick seconds later - it was covered in the MOTD coverage. Had Webb seen it, could have easily been a red so United could come out and say they want that reviewed. To be honest, I find Pardew's campaign a little distasteful. Not condoning RVP's actions but I think we could have managers requesting FA reviews of opposition players every match if they were that way inclined.

Need some advice folks, team for next game week is

    Vorm (WIG)

Rangel (WIG) Hangeland (AVL) Baines (qpr)

Dyer (WIG) Sterling (RDG) Pienaar (qpr) Bale (CHE)

Berbatov (AVL) RVP (STK) Tevez (wba)

Subs - Fed, McCartney, Ben Arfa, Ridgewell

£0.3m int he bank and 1FT

I got the worst score in my minileague this week and falling down the rankings, still have my WC and wondering what to do?

Thinking hold off for another week with this team and then WC? If so, I need a 1week punt.

Southampton have conceded a total of 20 goals in the EPL this season.

As a season ticket holder for about 15 years, I quite enjoy my football. However with the…….”he called me black but he called me a choc-ice, he dived but he didn’t appeal so that makes it alright, his team are cheats but my team can do what the hell they want………………sort of bolox going on week in week out, I don’t enoy it so much any more. In fact with the FPL I think I would give it a miss quite frankly.

Footballers on the whole are a pretty good bunch but some of the players who should know better really do make it a laughing stock. Ruining the beautiful game.

Nonsense! Lots of luck, I'll grant you that, but some play more wisely than others. Discipline plays a part as well, not making emotional or precipitous decisions. An "FPL brain" is surely one that understands how to play percentages, use the information available, and resist emotion-driven comfort moves or reckless gambles. This helps you take advantage of whatever luck goes your way and stops you from becoming fate's plaything.

So logic then? Bit of a stretch to call logic and basic stat following an 'fpl brain'. And stats can be read in many ways, and in a game based on results from other games where luck plays a part it ismainly luck. You can use stats to increase your chances ofbeing lucky but it is ultimately a luck game

If it's all down to luck why do the other stuff? As I said, I concede there is a huge amount of luck to this, and persisitent good or bad luck can determine your success. But usually luck is not persistent one way or the other. I'll accept your terminology if you prefer: FPL brain=logic, but the point is the same. Some people do not behave logically, some (me for one) have lapses in logic. Lapse in logic=losing your "FPL brain". My point was not to defend the phrase "FPL brain" but to argue that it is not only or even ultimately luck. A person who consistently makes stat-informed logical moves will almost always do better than one who make emotional or poorly-informed decisions. Thats why we all run away with our public mini-leagues. 😉

Ah, now that's a fun issue. I agree, both sticking with Santi or twisting to Bale were logical moves standing alone. Whether one move was more logical than another depends on your longer-term plans for your team. Putting the armband on Suarez was NOT a logical move. 🙂

I sold Bale for Santi last week and it has lost me points and £.

Though in fairness, I might have given Bale the armband this week so on balance I'm just about even on points (but still 0.2m down in cash)

Santi -> Bale is not "monumentally" shite. Not a good transfer though as it is a fairly like-for-like transfer. For both me and you, it would have been much better to find another midfielder to upgrade.

Looking at my team and the potential midfield points from the likes of Mata and Santi and the need to get the cheaper but great value Berbatov I've come to the conclusion that one of Tevez or RVP has to go.

But I can't bring myself to ditch either....but if I don't they could become two very expensive barriers to the big points.

Going to deliberate this throughout the next two weeks.

Meanwhile fairly happy with my first hit of the season Kag and Fletch out for Bale and Lambert.....in the end only cost my 1pt and crucially I now have Bale and a good cheap striker.

RVP is a tricky one. Avoided him so far and a happy camper. He is not averaging enough points to justify the cost. Just not getting as many chances as last year and more of a rotation risk.

But he will soon have a great run of fixtures. The old form and fixture debate..

If you can play the captaincy game without him, id consider ditching, but if you believe he will hit last years points, it would be mad to drop him.

I think it could be time to ditch Tevez as well. RVP and Tevez are just not sustainable in the long term. Tevez out for Berbatov frees up a vital 2m or so which can be used to add a Mata or a Santi to my midfield.

Hazard to Mata is another move I'm considering, but feels crabbier than a crab pate made by an eight legged chef.

That is the key to this dilemma, really tough to ditch either not just because of their track record over the last few seasons but because they offer such good coverage for the Manchester sides.

While Silva and Aguero are better options than Tevez, they cost more.

Ditching RVP, who not only is RVP, with all the kudos that brings, is also now the main striker for the most potent attacking force in Premier League history year on year.

To play devils advocate, is RVP living off last years laurels? (FPL wise)

Seven GW's in, he has being pretty good, but not 13-13.5m good.

And he has not looked 13.5m good either, from a stats perspective. (except for his finnishing, but needs more chances to justify the tag)

For me, they are players you buy to stick the armband on. No City striker can be 100% trusted with that now, imo. The risk of Mancini surprising us with the line-up and being left with a 1 point captain means they're a no-go for me. And RVP, I just don't think he's anywhere near worth £13.5m considering there are so many other striker option for a hell of a lot cheaper.

I don't have any City or United 'coverage' at the moment, and am happy with that.

I think of it as the fear factor. Every man utd game I would fear as a non RVP owner. Not the same with Tevez. As you say I can't captain him anymore, whereas with RVP I'm happy to make him my default captain any game where there are not other stand out candidates.

Tevez to Berbatov is making more and more sense with each ticking time bomb of this international break.

He's not the main man like he was at Arsenal though. Almost everything went through him, on way or another. An United the goals will be shared around. He's done decent enough so far, but if he didn't do so well last season (whilst being the absolute main man) would people be holding on to him now, at £13.5m? Not a chance.

I understand the 'fear factor'. It's not nice watching United as he *could* score very well in any game, and due to his high ownership/captaincy it's not an easy watch.

There is also the doubt that he could be rested in the easy home games (exactly where you absolutely want him), with Rooney/Welbeck/Hernandez about.

If you sell him and spread the wealth around, you won't be lacking captain options. For me, he's just not worth the outlay.

Neither does the two people winning my mini league by some distance. I have held onto Tevez and RVP because they are differentials in my league, Im wildcarding now have ditched Tevez for Berbatov. Not sure about RVP yet, but without him I can squeeze in the midfield Mata, Santi and Bale.

Isn't Silva then the best option? Although he didn't grab points against Sunderland he was excellent. Everything went through him and he was rarely rotated last year, even after Champions League games.

Despite being frustrating it is an interesting puzzle, what to do about City and United coverage. I don't think you can live without for too long, but having not invested in RvP I don't know what to do regarding United.

Come to the party late rather then early imo if you don't own RVP. Fixtures open up from GW10 onward, but judging from this weekend, the link up with the attack did not favor him.

Looking to avoid Hazard to Cazorla transfer, if Hazard gets back to his early-season form, it'd be very difficult to have him back into the team. Anyone thinking of keeping Hazard despite of his fixtures?

That's the thing. I got him at 9.5. But if you look at Mata and Oscar, I don't think the difference between Hazard and Mata in price really is justified. I might have to ditch him cause there's certainly more value in Mata than in Hazard, and for that very reason, I'm tempted to go for Cazorla too, who has good-looking fixtures coming up.

I think for 9.5 Hazard is better value- I think he is guaranteed more goals during the season and will also take a pen from time to time. So it is a tough choice for guys like you, I personally got him at gw4 so will sell this or next gw, because I think chelsea in general could struggle.

I'm a Chelsea fan and I know what you mean. We generally start the season so well, and then with all those draws and a few losses in the middle, just pushes us down the order. Yes Hazard is great value, but Mata's value at 8.9 is almost equal to Hazard's 9.5, just cause of the fact that Mata can't play 90 minutes evevery game. Tough decision really.

OK. I would like to propose two forward lines. I would be grateful if you kind guys and dolls would vote on them, perhaps with a reason or two:

    a) Rooney, Torres, Berbatov

or, indeed with a variation of the above six names! Ta. 🙂

A looks very tempting. Torres does look like scoring attacking points with Mata, Oscar and Hazard settling-in behind him. Chelsea are overloading the box with the full-backs, the 3 attacking mids and Torres. Berbatov, you know, is class. Rooney has lit up United's attack too.

imma go with the latter B

RVP is still RVP, no matter what the others say about him not worth his points, 1 hattrick will shut them all up

Torres ( u know , he might just be good for this 2 games tho he look threatening.. it is waste of transfer to move him in and out cause of inconsistancy ).

i like berba.. i think he will come out good, good for BPS as well...

Podoski, i am not sure if hes on pens but i reckon he is ? Santi Carzola will give him all chances he need, he just need to convert them. and their good run of fixtures.

Adebayor ... who knows when he be placed in the startin role with AVB having high regards for defoe, but seems like he came on for 23mins against Villa, hopefully soon. it is a great differencial as well.

Rooney.. too early to see with his new position. hes a proven scorer tho, has to see who is on PENS(rvp/rooney)

ideally i go RVP/ROONEY( see who is on pens) , Podoski ( Adebayor once hes 100% on) , Berba

if its not possible then B
