In recent years, Arsenal have enjoyed something of a golden age when it comes to front men. From Denis Bergkamp through Thierry Henry to Robin Van Persie, a dynasty of virtuosos has consistently carried a winning tune in harmony with, or more recently in spite of, the supporting ensemble. Never has Arsenal’s reliance on its soloist been more pronounced than last season, and few would envy the weight of expectation thrust upon new signing Olivier Giroud following Robin Van Persie’s 11th hour defection to United at the start of this campaign.

If the acquisition of master conductor Santi Cazorla and the seasonable resurgence of the much-maligned Gervinho have breathed new life into last season’s moribund backing band, Giroud’s initial contributions were conspicuously off key. Gently removed from the spotlight by Arsene Wenger in Gameweek 4, the Frenchman was eased into the fray from the bench over the ensuing clashes, and with Arsenal’s strong team performances somewhat lifting the pressure on the new arrival, Upton Park experienced a Giroud awakening in Gameweek 7.

Re-installed to centre stage against the Hammers, Wenger’s decision to shift the in-form Gervinho back to his customary berth out wide was as effective for the Gunners as it was frustrating for many Fantasy managers. With twice as many shots as his nearest Premier League competitor last week and the threat stats of a thermonuclear Chuck Norris, Giroud even achieved the minor miracle of besting Santi Cazorla in our own ICT index on his way to a goal, an assist and a full house of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points.

Whilst long-term there is the possibility that Wenger will adopt the same horses-for-courses approach with his forwards as he has with his centre backs, it seems profoundly unlikely that he would puncture Giroud’s newly inflated confidence with a return to the bench over a run of fixtures that looks rosy for Arsenal’s attacking assets (nor, QPR, mun, RDG, TOT).

Conceding nine goals in their last two games, Norwich’s newfound predilection for public incontinence will be a welcome development for Wenger’s men, and a visit from the similarly leaky QPR should present further scope for big returns the following week. A tricky trip to Old Trafford may prove a gloomy exception to the rule in Gameweek 10, but the clouds are quickly dispersed by a visit from travelsick Fulham and the home leg of a North London derby with a recent history of big scores for both sides.

With the early season template teams starting to unravel, Fantasy managers are more at liberty than ever to roll the dice with their precious front three. As we scour the markets for differentials, Giroud – priced at 8.4 in FPL and 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and with ownership of under 2% in both games – could represent a strong mid-priced alternative if he can emerge unscathed from international duty over the next week or so with Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus.

I'm not suggesting that you should add a third but defence and attack are completely seperate in this game. I would only class it as doubling up if you had two attackers or defenders

Team for GW8. Where can it be improved:

    Foster (Man City @ home)
McCartney (Soton @ home), Baines (QPR away), Williams (Wigan @ home)
McClean (Newcastle @ home), Hazard (Spurs away), Michu (Wigan @ home), Pienaar (QPR away)
Tevez (West Brom away), Fletcher (Newcastle @ home), RVP (Stoke @ home)

0.8m in bank and 1 FT.

I could then use my wildcard and get sterling in for Noble among other transfers.

That is very true. Thank you for that.

I think i will use my wildcard after GW8. I just want the striker situation to become a bit clearer as i am unsure which three are the best options at the moment.

I will get Cazorla in i think. Should do well in coming weeks.

i really like your defence!! but i dont think spurs will keep enough clean sheets to justify it. Also vertonghen is only worth it if he continues at left back for the season.

Your tactic would be more secure if Tevez was nailed on. Problem you have with him is, hes not exactly captain material with the doubts over his starts and mins on pitch

ye so do i, but hes definately no2 striker and not no1! Hes only in my team because hes so cheap and city will score the most goals in the leaugue. I just dont think hes worth the risk on the most important move on fantasy - The captain!

Very good. Maybe get Begovic for Cerny, downgrade Vermaelen to Gibbs. You could then maybe upgrade Ramirez to Pienaar or just keep the cash in case you need it.

Probably not high. Teams like SUN, STO, WHM and WBA are going to get clean sheets often against mediocre competition at home. If you stick with the likes of Verm and Vertonghen when they have a tough fixture, you are setting yourself up for failure.

Baines I can see as an every week player because he is such an attacking threat (to point, he is second in points with just 2 clean sheets while Alex Cole is behind him even with 4 and a goal and an assist).

I asked this earlier and will probably ask another 10 times in the next week or two, after the next gw, Morrison or Walters?

I rate Morrison very highly and promised to do form over fixtures this season but...

Im just looking at past seasons stats and they are very unimpressive for him. But maybe he has improved this season under a new coach. Need to do some more research on this guy 😀 I think Walters better option now- purely BC of the fixtures you should maybe take a look at Snodgrass too?

The Morrison vs. Walters debate above...Walters stats might be better but this is a classic example where stats shouldn't be compared like for like. Walters is actually a striker and a pretty mediocre one at that. Morrison might have less touches in the box/shots etc but he's an attacking midfielder and isn't expected to have the lion's share of these stats when he's not playing centre forward. Walters value is obvious but Morrison is proving to be very handy in FPL so far. And apart from Gera, he's on his own in the WBA midfield in that respect. Brunt might have a say in things but while Morrison is the focal point I see him continuing to get attacking returns.

I also think Crouch at roughly the same price as Walters is a better prospect.

The key detail is that the west brom long balls are aimed at morrison, if he doesnt set up Shane Long then they wont score. Crucial to the team really.

Dont you ever think that if a bad player is racking up points he could be a bit lucky and that could change soon since he does not have the skill level to keep it up. Just check out my analysis on him. I know that he gets lots of assists from knock downs so he is a servicable player at that price, but I really would not waste a spot on him.

Peter Crouch- I looked at the entire PL career for Crouch to get a better idea of his normal conversion rate, mostly because last seasons was offensively very poor for Stoke, so his stats were probably worse than normal for last year.

          GW1-6: Shots taken:13 Goals scored:4
Normal rate of shot conversion: 2.08 shots per game, 8.9 shots per goal

It's a bit like Sunderland. As long as Fletcher/Crouch are scoring the goals it's hard to be tempted by any of the other options on offer. Especially when their tactics are so focused on having a target man up front like they do.

I have said Walters above but am going with crouch after the united game. He seems to be the focus of everything for stoke. Also not worried about Owen as think he will just add to the lanky buggers assist tally. Can't help but remember his knock down record at spurs with VDV

I can agree with all that but you neglect to mention the dreaded fixtures. I also don't care if Walters is a dodgy mid playing OOP up front if he scores more than Morrison. It's a conundrum, but I have another gw to think about it.

I know Theo is tempting, but you should realize that he is sharing his position with 3 other players. Despite the tasty fixture coming up, do you really want to put 9 mil on a player who could get a 1 pointer for you.

I know it;s a risk, but I don't see many better options than Theo if I need to replace Ramirez. As tempting as Nolan is, after GW9 his fixtures take a nosedive and that puts me off as may need an extra transfer to get him out (though I was planning to save GW10, so it's possible to get him in.)

Walters looks like the best long term fixture wise, if you could bench him this week.

If Nolan keeps this up (in terms of the volume of shots) he could be worth keeping long term.

Snodgrass is worth a punt since he has underperformed greatly so far IMO, but again a bad fizture this week

HBA also looking good too with fixtures improving for Newcastle.

Nolan could be kept long term i suppose. If i bench Walters I'm either playing Kebe away at Pool or going 4 at the back and playing Davies at home to Wigan

Davies playing is not the worst idea I have heard. My personal suggestion would be to get the option you feel most comfortable in keeping long term, unless Wenger says Walcott will play next weekend.

Why is everyone transferring out Tevez? It really doesn't make any sense? Any one got a sensible answer or list of points as to why people 'should' transfer out Tevez that makes sense? His history and form are beyond elite. His fixtures look solid. Mancini has played him regularly. He's the kind of player that can score, even from the bench. Do people really think Manini won't play Tevez regularly? Have they hit the 'history' tab on Tevez? Fubar I say!
