After a hugely disappointing second half of the 2011/12 campaign, Fantasy managers were understandably wary over the merits of Jon Walters heading into the new season. The Stoke man surged out the blocks last term before falling dramatically as a Fantasy prospect, after finding the net in just one match – the Gameweek 38 home draw with Bolton – since the turn of the year.

The Potters’ opening fixtures made it easy to overlook the vast majority of their players, too. Games against Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Liverpool in their opening seven is set to be followed by a trip to Old Trafford next weekend – hardly the type of schedule to entice the savvy Fantasy manager.

Tony Pulis’ tactics also dimmed Walters’ appeal as an out of position prospect in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Classified as a midfielder yet typically fielded as Peter Crouch’s strike partner in a default 4-4-2, Walters has been shuffled out to the right wing on occasion as Stoke’s tricky run of opponents have resulted in a more defensive 4-5-1 formation at times.

While the Stoke defence have excelled thus far, with just five goals conceded, and Crouch has chipped in with four goals and an assist, Walters has remained somewhat under the radar – despite offering clear signs of his potential. To date, the Republic of Ireland international has played a part in four of his side’s six goals, with a converted spot-kick and a trio of assists helping him rack up 32 FPL points; this is the same tally as Gervinho and Nathan Dyer, for example, and just three points behind Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Nolan and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Once they get the United game out of the way, Stoke’s fixtures suggest their Fantasy assets will be afforded the platform to offer prosperous returns. As the difficulty level eases a touch, Pulis is expected to roll out a 4-4-2 once again – while they’ve lost just once in their opening seven Gameweeks, a single victory, at home to Swansea, underlines a definite requirement for greater emphasis on attack.

Priced at 6.4 in FPL, Walters’ midfield classification is far more enticing than in the Sky Sports game, where he’s listed as a 7.9 priced forward. Factor in his penalty duties and a run of games that see him welcome (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) to the Britannia from Gameweek 9-14, in addition to trips to Norwich and West Ham, and Walters looks a viable contender for our five-man midfields, with a mere 6% ownership only furthering his appeal as a strong differential to consider.

    Hmm. He did very well for me for a while last season but does anyone else feel he's just a horribly dull pick?

          I see him as an "against the grain" player, like a much, much duller Fellaini.

          He can be depresssing to own, but not boring last season when he was on about 7ppg for 2 months. Always chipped in on those weekends where everybody else failed.

          Though this year Kightley is cheaper and Crouchie has more (!) flair.

        But Walters has the advantage of being classed as a midfielder. Definitely easier to take a punt on a Stoke midfielder than use up a valuable striker spot.

      As a Podolski owner may I recommend looking at Giroud instead? Podolski should be on penalties, but owning Podolski is a bit like owning Mirallas or Rooney or Ba at the end of last year - you're slightly OOP and not in a good way. The centre forward's or lion's share of the chances are going to fall to Giroud for the foreseeable now. Better pick for me.

        Silva could be a good pick over Bale. But with Bale you get a certain security you don't get with any City player, that he will play every game, and play a large part in any Tottenham attack.

        I personally don't think having any city is necessary, despite despite their fixtures. Though this could come back and bite me.

    OK some mundane observation on the strikeforce of the top 10 teams in the world.

    Of the 30 strikers used here is the frequency of their appearance....

    (Note the complete lack of Man Utd cover with no Aguero either. I guess this situation will change over the international break.)

    Tevez = 6
    Torres = 6
    Jelly = 6
    Suarez = 3
    Ba = 3
    Lambert = 2
    Defoe = 1
    Long = 1
    Fletcher = 1
    Graham = 1

      Guy, they have Tevez, Torres, Jelly and they're being top 10 cos these strikers are scoring more poitns than RVp & Aguero. It's not the same as they're in top 10 and they dont get RVP. Players with RVP will outscore them soon and they'll be in top 10.

      I'm not sure how useful lists of this kind are, particularly this early in the season - you'd expect whoever happens to be in the top ten after a particular gameweek to have strikers who've done well that particular gameweek - I realise you aren't setting this up as conclusive proof of anything in particular but I did see this kind of thing adduced in support of a "see! you don't want RVP!" argument a few times in the last few weeks.

        Absolutely. Mark and Granville have a lot to answer for with that podcast where it got mentioned in passing how few of the top players have RVP. 😉

        The squads of the top managers are by their very nature a reflection of the players who've performed well so far. It doesn't actually reinforce the point that RVP has only done ok so far, it's just another way of showing it. Cause and effect are getting muddled.

      I only got him in last week and I'm already worried. He played so deep against Fulham. Don't know if that's got do to with Gaston being out or a way to try and tighten up or what. Still a pain in the bollocks though.

      One of my many permutations of transfers is an all or nothing Lambert and Hazard to Santi and Berb for a hit this week.

      I'll probably bottle that move. But I think Lambert is good value and should do well in the medium term. West Ham is a tough one, but Southampton are not short on attacking threat.

              He's joint 4th for goals scored, 3rd for threat, 3rd for penalty box touches, 20 somethingth for shots and 8th for chances created - and that's against tough opponents.

              At 6.7, he just needs to score more than Lambert / Kone / Graham / Berbatov to be the outstanding cheap pick. Given the fixtures AFTER next week he's an informed med term pick.

    Scouts - a heartfelt plea.

    Please, for the love of monkeys, don't allow ads with sound on your site. They make me disproportionately angry.

    I'm sitting here at work with my headphones on listening to music. Every time I refresh this page, a lady talks over my music about being trapped with bad odour. I want to push her down the stairs and it makes me feel like a bad person.

        As lame as it sounds, I prefer not to on principle. The vast majority of sites can only survive to give me their free webpages by having ads. Blocking them seems like stealing their webpages and denying them a living.

            However I'd imagine advertisers base their decision whether or not to advertise purely on traffic no? If so your helping their ad revenue whether you block ads or not.

              Cheers. I could be wrong but I think there are specific measurements of numbers of eyeballs that take adblocking into effect. Certainly, websites can know whether you're using them or not.

              However, these ads with sound are eroding my commitment to the cause!

                I would presume that the number of people with adblockers reduces the premium per view.

                  Ha! Never had much of a reaction from the good and the arrogant so I have something to be proud of.

                  Yeah Gera was something of a rely-on-my-intuition-which-has-so-far-failed-me-at-every-turn kind of a pick, but I'm surprised by the reaction to Routledge and Dempsey. I just can't bring myself to go for Bale as he has been so disappointing and I figured Dempsey appears to be settling in.

                  Ah well. There'll be more revisions by the weekend.

      Ooooooo - Different.

      I like it. But then, I'm an Arsenal fan and you've represented us rather well here. Bravo. 🙂

      Are Routledge, Gera and Caulker going to nail down their first-team spots? They all seem to have quite strong competition.

      Obv. Kolarov is an estimated punt but to do that I think you need bench fodder that is guaranteed to be playing week in week out. I don't think the above trio are.

      I'm all for going for different teams but you have some real issues with this one.

      I'd really have a proper long look at Routledge, Gera, Dempsey, Kolarov and Krul and see if you can do better. I think a good idea would be to shift money from defence and goal to midfield.

      You'll struggle badly if the top teams find any kind of form. This is also true for my team and it's not ideal.

      He'll certainly be hard to drop when scores 20 points vs. Wigan.
      I am definitely considering keeping him, but if he and Swansea don't produce at Wigan - I have so many other targets I am going to find the temptation to give one of them a chance over him too great I think, esp. with fixtures on the turn.

      There is a touch of the Fletchers about his scoring record so far though - his first 4 goals were off the back of 4 shots on target, I think. And with Swansea suddenly on their arses, we could be looking at regression to below the mean.

        that was shots on target, and last weeks have made his averages normal again. I think 10-14 goals are not out of reach for him.

    I'm thinking of doing either A) Noble - Sterling or B) Hazard - Carzorla. What do you think sounds best?

    I do still have Federici but with nil in the bank, can't replace him with a decent alternative, so thought I'd hold on to him til I decide to WC. Team is:

    Foster, Federici

    Baines, Ridgewell, Hangeland, Demel, Clyne

    Hazard, HBA, Pienaar, Michu, Noble
