After a hugely disappointing second half of the 2011/12 campaign, Fantasy managers were understandably wary over the merits of Jon Walters heading into the new season. The Stoke man surged out the blocks last term before falling dramatically as a Fantasy prospect, after finding the net in just one match – the Gameweek 38 home draw with Bolton – since the turn of the year.

The Potters’ opening fixtures made it easy to overlook the vast majority of their players, too. Games against Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Liverpool in their opening seven is set to be followed by a trip to Old Trafford next weekend – hardly the type of schedule to entice the savvy Fantasy manager.

Tony Pulis’ tactics also dimmed Walters’ appeal as an out of position prospect in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Classified as a midfielder yet typically fielded as Peter Crouch’s strike partner in a default 4-4-2, Walters has been shuffled out to the right wing on occasion as Stoke’s tricky run of opponents have resulted in a more defensive 4-5-1 formation at times.

While the Stoke defence have excelled thus far, with just five goals conceded, and Crouch has chipped in with four goals and an assist, Walters has remained somewhat under the radar – despite offering clear signs of his potential. To date, the Republic of Ireland international has played a part in four of his side’s six goals, with a converted spot-kick and a trio of assists helping him rack up 32 FPL points; this is the same tally as Gervinho and Nathan Dyer, for example, and just three points behind Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Nolan and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Once they get the United game out of the way, Stoke’s fixtures suggest their Fantasy assets will be afforded the platform to offer prosperous returns. As the difficulty level eases a touch, Pulis is expected to roll out a 4-4-2 once again – while they’ve lost just once in their opening seven Gameweeks, a single victory, at home to Swansea, underlines a definite requirement for greater emphasis on attack.

Priced at 6.4 in FPL, Walters’ midfield classification is far more enticing than in the Sky Sports game, where he’s listed as a 7.9 priced forward. Factor in his penalty duties and a run of games that see him welcome (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) to the Britannia from Gameweek 9-14, in addition to trips to Norwich and West Ham, and Walters looks a viable contender for our five-man midfields, with a mere 6% ownership only furthering his appeal as a strong differential to consider.

    Here's a tricky one.....

I am getting Begovic next GW definitely
I currently have Vorm/Tremmel(Swansea reserve) in goal. If I just lose Vorm then ill save 1.5 mil, but if I get rid of Tremmel instead ill have two playing 'keepers. I intend to play Bego for the next 6 weeks anyway as fixtures are great but worried by the spectre of Sorensen, which would leave me with no 'keeper

    Basically
    Begovic and Tremmel and 1.5
    or Begovic and Vorm

      Begovic and Tremmel +1.5.

      Sort Tremmel out later.

Begovic has put in superb performances and will not get ousted from playing in the league.

Works both ways with keepers, the week you play Vorm, Begovic can do the business. The foundation for keepers has to be CS potential.

SOU, wig, MCI, new, STO, tot, mun, CHE, LIV, wba, EVE, ars

...takes you up to Boxing Day. Some very tough spells there, and not many games where I'd be super confident of returns.

Thing is, Nolan's a jammy git. High chance of being involved in any colsolation goals etc. He'd be near top of the list of cheap Mids I'd be comfortable playing in tough fixtures. He's only 31 too, so not at Lamps levels of ossification.

Just been updating my own watchlist on FPL. Noticed Oscar is only 7.8! Incredible how he has managed to drop so much as it would have been a punt to own him to begin with.

If he maintains his role behind Torres, surely he is a better option than HBA and Yaya in the long run and also probably better value to own than Hazard or Mata due to all 3 of them being pretty equally likely to get attacking returns?

Considering getting him in for Nolan rather than Morrison in the near future.

I want Oscar bad, but I want to ride out his fixtures for a while and then do HBA > Oscar further down the line. But as soon as his ownership starts going up, I'll probably just have to bring him in instantly - so ssshhh!

Someone (Andy?) made a good point about his higher defensive responsibility over Mata and Hazard - in that he is either asked to or takes it upon himself to more of the legwork.

For me though, as you say, value for money is incredibly if he's stating every game (which I think RDM would be mad not to do over e.g. Lampard in the near future), and also his finishing and tendency to shoot mark him out above Mata and Hazard.

Can't wait to have him in my team

There's a not unreasonable shout for doubling up on Chelsea mids. Plenty of goals to go around so far with no one person dominating, and if you compare Oscar to the other ~£7.8m mids in isolation he should stand up pretty well.

There was value to be had in buying Mata at £8.8m, and there's probably value to be had in buying Oscar at £7.8m too, y'know?

If you still have a wildcard and own RvP I think it's the way to go to have something similar.

You can still have a frontline (as in my case) of Tevez, Ba, Jelavic.

Zabaleta was the one I was considering a points hit for, although I was going to get rid of him a few GW's back.. But he kept playing, so I stuck with him until now. Fellaini was the other one I was going to transfer out for a hit, but am not sure. Damn those International games giving me more time to ponder haha!

    Jussi Bego
    Hughes Cuellar Demel Wilson Fonte
    Pienaar Cazorla Bale Silva Sterling

Have I gone too weak in defence and too strong in midfield or can you get away with the budget defenders?

Defence is too weak. The beauty of this season is that there are good mid-priced options in midfield and up front which should allow you to get a strong defence.

Bale -> Nolan for me. Then Foster for Jussi, Rafael for Fonte, Riise for Hughes.

    Team is:
    Foster Begovic
    Baines Gibbs Nelsen Gorks Davies
    HBA Fellaini Cazorla Nolan Puncheon
    RVP Aguero Fletcher

If i do Fellaini to a 5m mid this week,
I can do Fletcher ----> Ba & HBA -----> Bale next week.

Does it makes sense or are there any obvious weaknesses that I cannot see?

It makes sense but it's leave your midfield quite weak. I suppose you knew that though when you went with RVP and Aguero! The points difference between Aguero and Tevez will be small imo, so I would look to downgrade and beef up the mid.

Aguero is more explosive imo, will definitely score more goals. I have a good captaincy option each week.
I would still have Bale, Cazorla(2 biggies), Nolan(mid-priced), Sterling,Puncheon(both cheapos).
Sterling and Puncheon rotate perfectly and I will play the one with the home game each week.
        Looks appealing to me!!

Puncheon gets rotated quite often so that could scupper your plans. I think if you want to keep your forwards, you'd have to look at downgrading Gibbs and upgrading a mid.

    Ba - aguero - berbs

    Bego - Gaz

He's looking likely to be fit from what I hear from people around these parts. Don't imagine he'd manage more than 1 point anyhow.

Thanks. I dunno - if they're going to keep someone out, maybe it'll be a team like West Ham - a style they would have had more practice with last year. Also, I only ever really have him there for attacking - which aren't beyond the realms in this fixture I don't think.

Right from the start the prices have been low, but when you consider that Mata, Silva and Bale all dropped in price too it's pretty crazy.

It doesn't make the game any easier though - just means that there's a lot more scope for team selection and we're not all winding up with the same template team.

Any views on who we think will outscore the other over the season?

    A) Sagna (once fit) vs. Rafael
    B) Baines vs. Ivanovic
    C) Jelavic vs. Ba
    D) Silva vs. Bale

Im currently thinking the first of each pair.

      Bale over Silva for starters.
      Jelavic/Ba is a tough call.
      Sagna probably over Rafael.
      Baines over Ivanovic.

Sagna will not get rotated once fit. Made this point the other day - it'd be like rotating Cashley with Bertrand.

          Rafael will get rotated.

Hence why I think Sagna. I agree Rafa would probably do better if he didn;t get rotated though.

But Sagna is back from a long injury and he might not perform well. Cole has been consistently plying well.

what do you say about Koscielny? He was their best defender last year and he's rotated now. Sagna is even injury prone, Wenger will rotate them to protect Sagna

I'd say the difference in class between Jenkinson and Sagna is quite larger than that between Kosc, Mert and Verm.

A few months out doesn't mean we should forget Sagna is the best right back in the league and has been for a while. Only recently I'd say he's faced a competitor in Ivanovic due to his great performances this season - but that could easily be mainly due to "easy" opponents on the whole.

We'll see I guess. Jenkinson has been solid defensively, his work rate has been exceptional, but he has none of Sagna's attacking class.

Ah, pace yes, but after striding ahead on the counter attack he seems to lose confidence and will just lay off an easy pass instead of taking on and committing defenders.

      A) Rafael (Sagna might not perform well after injury+Jenks rotation risk... Once MU defence is sorted out, Rafael will get clean sheets + attacking returns... he thinks he's a striker)
      B) Baines (Ivan will get more clean sheets but Baines will get better attacking returns with his spot kick duties)
      C) Jelly (Only if Fellaini gets well soon AND Cisse starts scoring)
      D) Bale (When he's on fire he will score more points and Silva might have rotation risk)
