If you’re currently considering the Fantasy merits of QPR’s Ryan Nelsen, one thing is for certain – you can’t be accused of chasing points. With just Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 18 points garnered over the first nine Gameweeks, the former Blackburn man has hardly set the Fantasy world alight this term but the Kiwi is starting to suggest he could offer us a viable cut-price defensive option.

Having missed the first two matches of the 2012/13 campaign after his Olympic Games exertions with New Zealand, Nelsen couldn’t have asked for a more difficult debut as Mark Hughes’ side were seen off 3-1 at the Etihad in Gameweek 3. The following week, however, his first game in front of the Loftus Road faithful not only produced an unexpected clean sheet against Chelsea but also earned the centre-half maximum FPL bonus points, helping his owners to a nine point return.

While Anton Ferdinand seems to have fallen out of favour since that Gameweek 4 goalless draw, starting just a single game since, Nelsen has been the only mainstay in the ever-changing QPR defence, with Hughes clearly reliant on his physical presence and organisational skills at the heart of the back-four. Although the R’s have failed to register another clean sheet, Nelsen again picked up bonus in his second home match despite the home side falling 2-1 to West Ham.

Over the past couple of Gameweeks, QPR’s resilience at the back has propelled Nelsen onto our recently updated Watchlist rankings. With just a single goal conceded against Everton and Arsenal, there are hopes that Hughes’ side are finally starting to tighten up just in time for a trio of crucial fixtures for the Premier League basement-dwellers.

If Hughes is to engineer a climb out of the drop zone, the upcoming home games against Reading and Southampton, with a trip to Stoke sandwiched in between, will be vital to the R’s prospects. There’s no doubt his acquisition would be something of a punt but if you fancy picking up Nelsen purely for home games alone, his next five Loftus Road showdowns read (REA, SOT, AVL, FUL, WBA) all the way up to Gameweek 19. Priced at 4.0 in FPL and 3.9 in the Sky Sports game, there are few cut-price defensive options who offer such a consistency of starts with decent home fixtures to follow.

How is this for the weekend, saving the free transfer:

    Begovic
    Baines, Rafael, McAuley
    Bale, Mata, Cazorla, Kightly
    RVP(c), Jelavic, Lambert

    Foster, Sterling, Gorkss, Boyce

Wow, this weekend's coming around quickly it seems! I've got a bit of a pickle this week - Wilson and Demel out, Berba unknown, Guthrie crap, and on top of all that I'd really like to bring Bale in.

Would love anyone's opinions on what they'd do with my team. If it helps, this would actually be the perfect week for my first 4-point-hit because I'm playing the "Average" team in my H2H so in theory I should have a lower score to beat...

    Bego (JJ)

Baines – Nelsen – Clark (Gorkss – Wilson)
Michu – Mata – Santi – Morrison (Sterling)
    RVP – Tevez – Berb

Went Gervinho > Morrison few days back. No more FT.

Should I go Wilson > Cameron? Clark is a doubt but I am thinking don’t take a hit for a defender? Of course – I will want to shift Wilson soon anyway.

Next week however ironically I was thinking of doing Berba > Ba and Clark > Sagna again, for a hit.

    Thoughts?

For reading looks like attacking defenders would be good as Southampton can't defend but are very attacking and sunderland can't score full stop.

For Sunderland their entire midfield and attack is a string of 2 pts, making defence against Reading the only viable option...therefore with Chelsea, sunderland effectively do not have a double at all.

MacAnuff and Gorkks are on my watchlist....meh city.

I'm on WC this week and have bought in Begovic already as my main GK so I can get McCarthy as 2nd keeper now instead of Ruddy.

Also got McAnuff in on my WC as one of my 2 rotating mids and have kept Cuellar so that will probably do it for me. Fletcher at a push, maybe.

GW16 clashes with the Manchester derby, making it easier to bench City/Utd defenders for Cuellar/Gorkss and also a good week not to captain RVP.

City v Utd seems a good game to bench Rafael to play a defender with a DGW. Of course I won't bench RVP, but him playing at the Etihad makes it easier for me to captain someone like Fletcher.

As you point out, the same was true last season. RVP got 2 points against City both times and Utd lost 7-1 on aggregate. If there wasn't a DGW I'd be looking at alternatives anyway.

      Pointless considering:

      1) They play Braga in the Champions League which United lead their group with 9 points to second places 4.
      2) Didn't play midweek with Rooney and set to play one of the most important games this season.

    Bale Michu Hazard Cazorla Guthrie
    Ba Podolski Jelavic

    2.3 m and 1 FT.

Where should my priorities be in terms of transfers for this GW?
