The Saints go limping on, suffering another damaging defeat at the hands of a solid showing from Steve Clarke’s Baggies. Here’s the Stock Check from tonight’s concluding Gameweek 10 encounter…

On The Up

Peter Odemwingie
Without a goal in his last five league appearances, the Nigerian struck a superb brace to offer a reminder of his former Fantasy glories. Odemwingie notched 15 goals and 9 assists in his debut Premier League season but struggled to find double figures for goals last term, often employed in a wider role and with limited starts. That has continued this term, with Steve Clarke handing him just four starts so far.

The West Brom Defence
Having gone four matches without a clean sheet, the Baggies were at their resilient best tonight with the midfield working tirelessly to protect a solid back four unit. West Brom have kept four clean sheets at home this term and the likes of Ben Foster in goal, along with Liam Ridgewell and Gareth McAuley go on offering value. They do have three away games in four, four in the next six. West Brom have conceded in every away trip this season.

Going Down

Rickie Lambert
Earlier in the season, the Saints striker looked to be the budget striker of choice – a brace in the 4-1 home win over Villa taking him to four goals in four starts. Since then, Lambert has gone five games without a goal or assist as the Saints struggle for a Premier League foothold.

Romelu Lukaku
Relegated to the bench to make way for the impressive Shane Long, the on-loan striker is struggling to gain the starts he needs to make a lasting impression. When introduced, Lukaku looks a handful with the potential to offer explosive returns. However, Long’s workrate was on show again tonight and he continues to have a grip on the starting role in Clarke’s preferred 4-5-1 formation.

James Morrison
The Scot missed out tonight having suffered “a slight niggle” in training according to Steve Clarke – we know little more about the injury, although we can presume that Morrison will remain an early doubt for the weekend trip to Wigan.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For an 8pt hit (have two frees, and was actually gonna do a 12pt hit as daft as that sounds!!), I can line up like this this week......................

    Begovic
    Rafael Sagna Baines
    HBA Pienaar Cazorla Ramirez
    RVP Tevez Berba

    Questions.

GOrks in for Sagna ahead of Readings fixtures, and double gameweek, AND meaning only 4pt hit but being left with Vorm as Begos back up.................or

Gorks for Sagna would mean I dont have Berba up against Sagna this week (although only a week)....BUT would also mean I have to bring in a dead goalie in Cerny at 3.9m coz i'd only have 3.9 for a backup keeper to Begovic. Unless Bego gets hurt I dont really care about that, since I plan on playing Begovic every week regardless.

So.............Gorks in for Vertonghen no hit............Sagna and Cerny in for Vertonghen 4pt hit?????

      Get McCarthy instead of Cerny.

And why in the world would you drop Sagna for Gorkks?

Sagna is coming in as part of my 4 part mini wildcard this week. Either a 4pt hit to end up with gorks and change Vorm at a later date, or the 8pt bang to have Sagna and Cerny.

I know I rambled a lot but i did say that I would only have 3.9 left for a gk and that only leaves one option...Cerny. Only thing I could do would be instead of bringing in Ramirez.....a sub 5.8m mid.

Any thoughts on a great 5.8m mid choice mate? I am useless with the cheap mids. Sterling maybe??? I want something different though...differentials big for me at the moment coz im doing awful unlike this time a year ago. Ramirez would be brilliant, especially with Saints run. My whole league has Sterling 🙁

          Guthrie. Kidding.

At 5.8 your options are Sterling, Maloney (my preferred choice, so consistent), McAnuff, Kightly, Snodgrass, Jarvis and Noble.

So you already took an 8pter? And are asking if you should do extra transfers.

I don't get it (it is early in the morning here and I havent had my coffee).

Gorkks for Vertonghen seems like thew better option to me anyway. You dont want a dead keeper on your bench (believe me as a Federici owner)

Im sorry I know that was a lot.

RVP is coming in. I have 2 fts. As part of RVP coming in, Bale goes out and I am stuck on Ramirez at this moment. Theres the two frees. In order to get RVP in though and end up with a 4th mid (starter!!!) who's more than 4.4-4.8 and worth half a damn....I need to downgrade Vertonghen. Still with me?

With Vorm as my 2nd gk the 4pt and then 8pt would be Vert out Vorm out and then Cerny and Sagna in.....OR.....just Vert out and Gorkss in.

        🙂

The latter.........You'll be kicking yourself if you take an 8pter and the GW ends up being a damp squib like this latest one.

Rafeal & Baines + rotating cheapie is plenty in your DF and your GK is fine for the time being. Deal with that another week

Think I am just gonna do RVP, Cameron and Maloney in for Fletcher, Bale and Vertonghen. 4pt hit. Rid of Vert, rid of Fletcher, Stoke cheap coverage, nailed on 5m mid with pretty decent fixtures and RVP in to complete my front line.

            Thanks mate.

Im gonna do Cameron, Maloney and RVP in.......Bale, Vert, Fletch out.....4pts...see above.

Any suggestions as to my next move?

    Foster -- Federici

    Ivanovic -- Baines -- Rafael -- Cameron -- Demel

Mata -- Yaya Toure -- Michu -- El Ahmadi -- Marveaux

    RVP -- Tevez -- Berbatov

    1FT, 0.5 in the bank

Toure to Fellaini? Give me an extra 1.0 to spend next week! Or should I get HBA in for Newc coverage, or Ashley Young as a differential now that he's fit again?

I could upgrade Marveaux (who has played a massive 67mins this season!) but for 4.7m I can't really get anyone decent. Or I could switch El Ahmadi to Maloney / Gera. But with an extra million to spend next week it would give me a few more options...

    Any comments / suggestions? Thanks

Haha both replies suggesting the same thing!

I feel he might be a season-keeper though. I've had him from the start and he still looks dangerous when he plays. It's definitely crossed my mind though!

Who would you suggest to replace with?

You think Yaya's worth keeping? Seems to be playing very defensive at the mo

You need to get rid of those 2 trash mids first.

        Deal with Yaya later.

Baines and Rafael are enough, downgrade Ivanovic.

Deary me your mid really does look scarily ordinary. Yaya reverse OOP as a holding mid, El Ahm and Marveaux really??

Definitely agree....Ivano out and a dirt cheapie in, GOrkss or Nelson or Fonte maybe, Marveaux to ANYBODY!!! At the very least, Ahmadi plays week in week out.

Yaya has two home matches in a row, and we have Silva coming back soon, so agree, he can wait.

You have Foster, Baines, Rafael, Mata, Michu, and the dream front line. Take a 4pt hit and do Ivano and Marveaux. You will have a dream team soon enough mate.

Believe it or not it was this very site that made me pick Marveaux in the first place! He was recommended in the pre-season guide so I risked it, obviously didn't pay off...

I agree my midfield is awful, just haven't yet had the courage to not have any Chelsea defence cover, I know they haven't had a clean sheet for a few weeks but there's always that chance, plus his attacking-ness (?) attracts me. But it seems to be the general consensus that he should go, so it looks like that'll be my plan!

Yaya started so well, had him from the beginning and still want to believe he'll come good again, plus he's a bonus magnet!

Thanks for the advice everyone, very much appreciated!!

Anyone with any Soke insight around? I was checking out Kightly yesterday, and the last 2 games he has been in a VERY forward position. GW9 he was basically centre forward. Anyone any idea what was going on there?

I also would like to know the answer to this. I'll likely have to replace Morrison (which was going to happen soon anyway) and thought Kightly could be a good shout as a 4th - 5th mid for Stoke's good run of fixtures.

Only turn-off is that it's Stoke, they aren't a massive scoring team and Crouch is the real attacking threat.

From what I've seen of Kightly he's been involved in a lot of their forward play and probably is a bit unlucky not have had a few more assist or even 2-3 goals. He's nailed on and is a genuine goer ... i like him.

I just can't get past the fact, it's Stoke!!

His average position in the last two has been VERY far forward. But his overall stats haven't shown much. I would like one more look at him in a home game before deciding, but need to make a decision this week if I want RVP in.

Yes it really is. Roon will score well all season, no doubts about that. But RVP is looking like he'll be PL top scorer and your captain for 90% of the weeks.

I'd do it and be prepared for the fact that Roon could outscore RVP this week, but in the long run RVP is the man to own out of the two

Then it is not worth a 4 point hit, as he could do it in one week for free..... in your opinion, as you think Rooney is likely to score more this week.

I also think this weekend is a real toss up, so it's not worth a -4... wait a week.

      My thoughts on each:

Rafael - insane attacking threat; playing really well this season but the returns of Jones and Smalling worries me

Sagna - class RB, great pick at that price; should be 1st choice but Wenger won't just yank Jenks who has been phenomenal this season (Jenks will still start some PL games imo)

Gibbs - should start all PL games if healthy, more attacking than Sagna, plays almost as a left winger when Arsenal have the ball; my preferred Arsenal defender but the downside is he's injury prone

Out of the 3, my pick would be Rafael. But I can't afford him right now.

Many of Giroud’s stats are better than Ba over the last 4 games, Arsenal have an awesome run of fixtures and they’re playing Fulham at home this week.

Defoe to Giroud for a -4pt hit?

I'm getting rid of Giroud for Ba. Brought him in as a 2 week punt for Norwich and QPR and regret it. Arsenal just haven't been clicking at all.

Not sure how his stats are better than Ba's, he makes good runs, but even Santi can't seem to find him. He spent the whole game against Utd running around the width of the pitch trying to pick up the ball and be useful.

I may regret it, but I don't think I will.

Berba has tough fixtures and hasn't justified the hype just yet. Im keeping Berb, but I wouldn't dream of shipping either of them to get him.

Only worth it if it a move to bring in RVP.

In which case I'd ship Tevez. It's hard to give a definitive reason, but I just feel that rotation will bite Tevez eventually. And I think it could be next week. I reckon it will be Tevez & Aguero upfront in the CL and then Aguero will keep his place for the Spurs at home but Tev will be given a break (just a guess mind you)

should consider doing something with Demel and or Clyne. West Ham's fixtures are very poor and I believe Demel is injured. Clyne won't give you much going forward and we all know how the ship goals. Lastly you could upgrade your third striker, but that would take some bank.

All the players with a star next to their name are players I'd be happy to move on for one reason or another. But with a lack of funds I'm really failing to see any obvious moves to improve my team (without hits).

      I'm down to:
      a) Lambert>Kone (meh)
      b) Hang>Cameron (frees up another 0.4, improves DF for this week)
      c) Hazard>Mata (Sideways yes, but Mata is better and cheaper, would wait til after CL obviously)
      d) Morrison>Routledge & Lambert>Berba (Doesnt fill me with optimism considering Swans/Ful fixtures)
      e)Any suggestions please

Perhaps Gibbs to Cameron for some more fund-flexibility next week? Otherwise there's nothing wrong with saving a transfer.

Did you see how Lambert played last night? I've only read the report but it seemed like he had the best chances for Southampton and hit the crossbar, could be worth holding on to at least for upcoming good fixtures?

Yeh I just read the match report....he hit the bar and forced Foster into a good save

I've considered keeping him for sure. Just don't like how he is being rotated away from home

I watched the game. Southampton were dire, and Lambert had the best of VERY few chances. If I had him, I'd probably keep him for next couple weeks, but would be readying my team to get him out for someone who will score regularly.

Who knows, if Ramirez comes back to fitness, he may get better service.

all that and you haven't considered Hazard and Lambert out and maybe Michu and Ba in?

Definitely upgrade Lambert to Ba/Jel/Berb and use all that juicy cash from Hazard and take your pick from most the mids in the game. Chelsea coverage is pretty important but their run of fixtures aren't great here soon, so I think you can get by for a little while....I am.

Can u do Valencia for Hazard, Ba for Lambert? I'd love that!!! 4pts .....meh. You have taken more hits than me so far too btw re: above.

          I own Ba 🙂

I think Haz>Mata is all I would consider really (which doesnt free up much cash). The reason being that Chelsea will be 2nd top scorersw this season (behind Utd) and it won't be Torres banging them all in

Nah. Once Silva is back, and we dont have to worry about the C.L, and Mancini quits tinkering, and Balo finds the net, and Aguero and Tevez get their chemistry going, and Mancini realises that Barry n Garcia together would allow Yaya to play further forward, and we get our confidence back, and we get through January with no injuries, and we get Yaya back from ACN quickly, and..............

        Personally

        Just b)

I'd want rid of Lambert, but you can wait over his decent fixtures and sort the rest out.

Hazard to Mata can wait as well.

Morrison to Ramirez/Lallana, would help free up just enough funds for Lambert to Berba. But that's just more Southampton players. Consider Maloney.

I knew having Lambert and Nolan in my team as bench players would eventually lead to a difficult benching decision...

Lambert home to Swansea in a must win game for the Saints

Nolan away to Newcastle, normally I wouldn't play Nolan away but its against his old club, players like to sneak in a few goals...

I'd say its 60/40 in favour of Lambert?!

Nolan only scores at home, but Carroll and Nolan you'd think something will happen, especially since Collocini is out. Williamson is a big boy though so you never know. Tough.

I'd go Lambert. If you have to, bench someone else and play them both 🙂

Nolan is playing better than Lambert is, confidence is a lot.
Because Lambert has no form and seems to start on the bench for most home games I'd start Nolan.

Is it worth getting in a defender as a 3rd MU player, saving the transfer or get rid of lambert. My team is:

      Bego (Foster)
      Baines, Gorkss, Williams (Demel, Hangeland)
      HBA, Valencia, Michu, Pienaar (Noble)
      RVP, Lambert, Tevez

2m to play with. I'm happy with my squad for GW11. That sadly means it will problerbly flop but hope springs eternal!

I dont trust the United defense. Rafael is ok to have because he has serious attacking potential but nobody else is worth it imo - at least until Vidic comes back and the start to keep clean sheets.

Lambert -> Crouch could be worth it this week, at least crouch plays every game

I think theres a handful of people on here who have mentioned it, but I can't see anyone having a balanced team with 25m worth of players in just 2 spots. It's one or the other clearly for me. I toyed with it but there's just no chance without either a) a wildcard, b) 10m to play with and/or c) a squad full of poo.

Dream world would be Aguero RVP Rooney for me....once they're all firing that is. I bet you there is someone in this FPL of ours that has that front line....somewhere.

If Spurs don't up their game soon I'll be tempted with Bale & Berba -> 6.2m mid or below & Rooney

          Few options in midfield:

          Thoughts?

Larsson (good fixtures, set pieces and DGW looming)
          Maloney (reasonable fixtures, pens)
Kightly (good fixtures, playing advanced role)
          Sterling (good fixtures, decent team)

Which one need to go and who is the best replacement:?:
        A) Pienaar (6.7) - playing deeper left side and I already got Baines for Everton cover.
        B) Ba (8.3) - injury but he got 2 consecutive home game.
        C) Michu (6.9) - playing oop in recent weeks made him less opportunity to score. From what I can see, Michu is use to hold up and open space for others to exploit.

        Current front 8:

        Pienaar - Michu - Sterling - Mata - Bale
        RVP - Tevez - Ba

Honestly, I don't think any of them need to go. Michu was a huge threat against City as the striker. I think that the "playing as the striker" narrative is a little overplayed but there's no way he's worse because of it. Selling him before a match with Southampton would be madness. Ba is a great option, Pardew said he's fit. Pienaar isn't as good as Fellaini but he's still a solid option. I guess he would be my choice of who to sell but it's hardly urgent.

Pienaar to Fellaini is the only thing I'd consider there. Fellaini has a lot more goal threat than Pienaar and will outscore him by a mile this year.
Michu and Ba I'd keep. Both playing well and both done the business so far. I cant see a single better option than them at the same money

Mid priced mids that are worth having

Michu - OOP, poor fixtures, 4 yellows
Fellaini - Poor fixtures (3 wks), 4 yellows
Nolan - Poor fixtures, no good away

Its unfortunate that each of these options have a few issues preventing them from becoming a must have. As far as I know the above are the only mid priced mids worth having, I don't think anyone else comes close, do you agree?

Yeah no one else really seems to compare at the moment. I think we have reached a dead end in potential for such a spot. Hopefully another player emerges as an option over GW11

I agree on all points but if those yellows dont come then Fellaini and Michu have good fixtures in the next three.
Nolan is the perfect mid to rotate each week with Crouch, 80/90% of their points will come from home games

Yeah thats it. Nolan is good if he has a rotation partner but not as a genuine 4th mid perhaps.

Well if mid-priced is 7 mill then you might be right, but if you allow some cheaper ones in there the pool of acceptable players get huge.

I wouldn't mind having Morrison, Gera, Sterling, Maloney, Taarabt, Granero, McAnuff, Kightly, Lllalllana, Ramirez, Routledge, Ki, Lennon, Osman, and in the future McClean or Johnson depending on who becomes good first.

None of them have a must have status though. They are not really 4th mid options but are good rotation options. It depends on your tactics. For me I'm not bothered by rotation as I'd just have Sterling every week on the bench and have the same front 7 each week. I guess I'm looking for that 4th mid who is able to be played every week.

I think the 'tough fixtures' thing is a bit overdone on here...all of these guys are playing OOP effectively right now and because of this they are likely to have chances in most games. If there's one thing to be learned from the 10 GW's so far it's that the best attacking players perform in the tougher matches. In my opinion, It's not as simple as 'such and such has Southampton at home...let's all captain him' etc.

          Examples:

          Bale away to Man United
Mata away to Arsenal and Spurs
Fellaini away to Fulham, home to Man Utd
Cazorla away to Liverpool, away to Man Utd

Even Michu should have had goals against City and Nolan should have had a goal against City but it was wrongly ruled offside.

I agree completely actually. And I must say I have been somewhat blinded by the 'fixtures'. This also works both ways in terms of supposedly 'easy' fixtures as well. But the question then is, which of those 3 would be the best option despite their upcoming run of fixtures?

Well I've got Fellaini and Nolan at the moment but mainly because that's just the way it has turned out for me. I've yet to own Michu but I am sure I will own him at some point. I don't think any of them sticks out as the 'essential' one but it's plain to see that they are all going to be pretty handy to own. Fellaini probably has the slight advantage of 3 plum fixtures...but the suspension can't be ignored.

        Current Team:

        Begovic (Jussi)

        Baines, Rafael, Mcauley (Rangel, Demel)

        Michu, Sterling, HBA, Hazard, Mata

        RVP, Berb (Pog)

        Plan:

        This GW: Mata ---> Fellaini

This will allow me to upgrade Pog next GW.

No no and no. Pienaars week, Fellaini 5pts max....Chelsea will MURDERRRRRR LFC at the Bridge, and then have 2 of 3 home matches after that, and Mata will be fit, probably wont play in the C.L and if he does you should just wait anyway, plus not to mention Fellaini might get his 5th y.c this weekend and then miss a match.

You aren't even starting Pog anyway.......?

Santon, meh....get Cameron or a West Brom defender maybe Olssen bargain at 5m
Losing Cech would lose you Chelsea, so i'd do Bale to Mata.
Noble and Britton don't excite me (and I have Noble, who's a nailed on 90min good buy at 4.8, but still doesn't excite me)....so you might wanna do something there.

I'd say you have too much invested in defence. Look to sell Saylor for an 4m ubercheap in the near future. Consider getting rid of HBA at some point as well, perhaps for Fellaini/Michu and have Ba in instead of Berba.

I agree and it's all right there in a certain mr Baines. He's got two weeks left for me, then its Baines HBA and Pienaar all on the chopping block, with Michu Sagna Cameron Valencia all on the radars.

HBA is in purely because, well, let's face it..........they have West Ham and Villa at home next.
Ba would be part of the HBA move to keep Newcastle attackers, because there's no way im going triple Newcastle...EVER....not that season EVER at least.

Chose Pienaar originally before it was evident Fellaini was a) in the hole, and b) going to be a major force early in the season. It was floated about before on here a while back, that Pienaar is the better long term option, since Fellaini could be forced to drop back deeper at any time Moyes deems necessary. The Baines/Pienaar combo down the left had me and ive had it a while now. To be completely honest though......Baines AND Pienaar have done next to nothing for me and im almost completely over the love affair. Baines is just that one keeper though isn't he, and Pienaar doesn't offer a lot of cash to play with as part of a move/hit. If I downgrade Baines, Pienaar gets upgraded simple as that.

He is the cheapest nailed on way into the Stoke defence. They are solid and concede few goals and often get clean sheets. He puts in a few crosses but I'd say its his clean sheet potential that has everyone raving.

Any other suggestions? My team is linked, I will get in a manu defender no matter what as it's too good value not to. I'm thinking downgrading Baines to something trash after the next three gameweeks to get in Suarez, they have good fixtures coming.

Instead of Benching Sterling every week, I'm tempted to rotate him with Maloney. Wigan and Liverpool's fixtures rotate excellently for the next 9 gws.

This would free up funds to have another big hitter. Can anyone persuade me not to get Maloney?

I have the Sterling+Maloney rotation going, works quite well if you ask me., though I mostly start Sterling every week as even though he is rediculously cheap his value is on par with many midfielders around 7-8million. He is basically a forward playing for a decent team.

It would allow me to get 'the big three' (Mata, Bale, Caz/Silva/whoever is taste of the month). Whilst keeping a strong strike force. It would mean ignoring Michu/fellani/Pienaar/Oscar etc.
