Peter Odemwingie grabs both goals as West Brom win at home yet again. Robin Van Persie praises his flourishing partnership with Wayne Rooney, Alan Pardew is confident of Demba Ba’s chances of returning against West Ham this weekend, while Darren Bent is an injury worry for Villa ahead of United’s visit on Saturday…

Fortress Hawthorns
Last season under Roy Hodgson, West Brom toiled in front of their own fans, with 26 of their 47 points coming on the road. The installation of Steve Clarke seems to have completely reversed the Baggies’ fortunes at the Hawthorns – they have now accrued more points at home than any other side, with last night’s win meaning they have triumphed in five of their opening six in front of their own fans – just one less victory than last term. Granted, they have played one more than the top three but it’s a sign of their flourishing form under Clarke – with three of their next four on the road, though, the new manager will be desperate to improve upon a record of two points and three goals from their first four on the road.

West Brom/Stoke Rotation
The 2-0 win took West Brom’s clean sheet tally to four for the season – equalling Chelsea, West Ham and Stoke for defensive returns thus far. All of the Baggies clean sheets have arrived at the Hawthorns, with the likes of Ben Foster, Liam Ridgewell and Gareth McAuley continuing to rack up the points, while neighbours Stoke have returned three of their four at the Britannia. Rotating Foster and Asmir Begovic for home games alone looks a hugely rewarding tactic and would have returned seven clean sheets for Fantasy managers in the opening 10 Gameweeks – the pair offer home/away rotation in all but four of the remaining 28 Gameweeks of the season.

Long’s Consistency
It’s been a frustrating start for life on loan at the Hawthorns for Romelu Lukaku. The giant Belgian has been handed just two starts by Steve Clarke but despite scoring in both his first XI appearances, he remains firmly behind Shane Long in the pecking order. Many had expected Lukaku to remain in the side after scoring at Newcastle last weekend but Long shook off knee and hamstring concerns to return to the Baggies starting line-up last night. While he’s yet to hit double figures in any Gameweek, Long has offered an impressive consistency – he has scored or assisted in all six of his home appearances this season, highlighting the task Lukaku has on his hands in earning a regular role up top.

Team Effort Under Clarke
While James Morrison’s owners were dealt a blow after the midfielder was ruled out with a “little niggle” picked up in training, Peter Odemwingie stepped up to serve a reminder of his capabilities. The Nigerian had failed to score since the first match of the season but grabbed both his side’s goals to send the Baggies into fifth spot – he currently sits on 32 FPL points, having bagged the maximum bonus. Looking at the points distribution for West Brom, their collective efforts have seen 10 of their players return 29 points or more; by comparison, only four players at United have equalled or bettered this tally, while just three players from Spurs and Newcastle have managed this achievement. It’s a sign of just how solid they are in every department, with Clarke managing to get the best out of his subs as well as his first-team regulars.

Struggling Saints
The return of Gaston Ramirez was meant to spark Southampton back into life – instead they failed to score on the road for the first time this season. Nigel Adkins will take a crumb of comfort in the fact his side have scored nine goals in their five at home – the Saints now play at St Mary’s four times (SWA, NEW, NOR, REA) in the next six, with that run of games now crucial if they are to stand a chance of avoiding the drop.

In Other News
Paul Lambert is awaiting news on Darren Bent’s ankle problem after the forward was ruled out of Villa’s trip to Sunderland at the weekend:

“Darren hurt his ankle on Friday in training. It is the same ankle he hurt against Wigan (in February). I know it was serious then. Is it serious? I don’t know yet. He will get treatment on it during the week and we will see. He was really hobbling on Friday and we couldn’t take a chance on him with Sunderland.”

Bent has cut a peripheral figure of late for the midlanders and had started just one of the previous four Gameweeks, with Lambert clearly preferring new signing Christian Benteke up top. Benteke has now produced a goal and assist in Villa’s last two league matches and bagged a brace in last week’s Capital One Cup win at Swindon. While the next three Gameweeks look dire for Villa (MUN, mci, ARS), the following three (RDG, qpr, STO) look tailor-made for Benteke to continue his recent strong form, regardless of Bent’s availability. Lambert also revealed that Joe Bennett was subbed off early at the weekend after the knee wound sustained early last month at Spurs reopened. With Eric Lichaj suspended for United’s visit after picking up five bookings for the season, Enda Stevens could fill in at left-back if Bennett fails to recover in time.

Robin Van Persie has talked up his role within his flourishing up front partnership with Wayne Rooney after United hit top spot for the first time this season with a 2-1 win over Arsenal:

“I call it a nine-and-a-half because you have two positions, the nine and the ten, and we are both nine-and-a-half. We are just helping each other out. We both play behind and a bit higher up. It seems to be working well and I am very happy with Wayne – hopefully we can keep it going.”

The pair have now started the last four matches together for United, following Rooney’s comeback from a thigh injury, and have returned a combined 63 FPL points over that quartet of fixtures, with Van Persie edging it by 35 to 28. Between them, they have produced five goals, seven assists and 14 bonus points from Gameweek 7-10 – despite facing the likes of Newcastle, Chelsea and the Gunners. With United’s next five fixtures looking particularly enticing (avl, nor, QPR, WHM, rdg), the duo have the potential to run riot as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to go all-out for goals; some Fantasy managers are even considering bringing Rooney in alongside Van Persie, with United averaging three goals per game when the pair start together.

Alan Pardew gave Demba Ba’s Fantasy owners a boost yesterday by admitting he expects the forward to shake off the shin problem that forced him off against Liverpool last Sunday:

“I should perhaps have taken Demba off at half-time, but we wanted to see how he went and that was no good, but hopefully he’ll be all right for next weekend.”

Despite being subbed off in the past two Gameweeks with the injury, Ba also took to twitter to play down the problem and with Newcastle’s next league game not until next Sunday, he’ll clearly be afforded plenty rest prior to the visit of former club West Ham. Having played a part in eight of the Magpies’ 12 goals, finding the net seven times and providing an assist, Ba’s importance cannot be downplayed ahead of a run of games that sees Swansea and Wigan also make their way to St James’ Park in the next five, with a trip to Southampton also on their agenda.

Pardew is also hoping Yohan Cabaye can recover from a “slight strain” to his hamstring – the Frenchman has scored two of his side’s last four goals, though James Perch could be out after picking up a thigh injury. The Newcastle boss also revealed he won’t be appealing the three-match ban handed out to Fabricio Coloccini for a challenge on Luis Suarez – the Argentine’s absence means Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson are favourites to be fielded at centre-half for the next three.

what do people think of this? 2FT

Bale and Fletcher OUT - Fellani and Suarez IN?

Bale is quite up and down this season and has a few tough games coming up although on his day he can be fixture proof!
My worry about Fellani is that he will be get his 5th yellow soon (probably in the next 2-3 games) but i could transfer someone like Nolan in for his suspended game.

I know Fletch has a good run off games coming up but feel his blistering start may have been more lucky than anything else?
After the Chelsea game Liverpool have favorable fixtures for the rest of the year.

    Thoughts?

My advice would be to be careful that your moves are not too sideways based on a player scoring well in a week. Yes Fellaini is a good prospect but so is bale. Bale plays really well in big games due to the attacking intent of the better teams leaving it open for fast counter attacks where he is at his best. Fellaini could quite easily get 2 points and a yellow this week and bale could score big.

I do agree with ditching fletcher as Sunderland have created the least scoring opportunites from any team in the european 5 top flights. Saurez is a good shout but again that match ban is looming! Liking Berbs myself.

The distinction between intelligence and cleverness is too subtle for me, but I'd certainly say he's *wise* enough to disguise his cleverness/intelligence a lot of the time for the sake of his career.

I really like that he exists. And that interview was very entertaining, although I'm not sure Brand actually addressed any of the points Paxman put to him. He just talked eloquently around the general topic.

Funny when he says fame doesn't tell you he is an elderly man who is diabetic and had a recent operation. Fame tells you he is Manuel from Fawlty Towers holding a platter. Que? Haha

That was good. And he was absolutely bang on about the reasons for the furore around that event - a convenient weapon for the Mail to use to further their anti-BBC agenda.

i see alot of people talking up berbatov, yes hes a great player and budget price, but surely their next 4 games wont see a great return:

          ars, SUN, stk, che

id be very surprised if he averaged 4ppg over those 4 myself

anyone care to share why he is a good pick right now?

I just think he's involved in pretty much every Fulham goal. And they are scoring. That's about it. Probably won't be any monster scores there but a steady flow will do...

Then you don't. I' ve got him so no need to use a transfer to get him out. Go with your gut (and the stats) Tosey. Wouldn't really know who I'd bring in for him anyway, except Tevez and that's too costly.

              Wrong.

He's involved in 45% of Fulham's goals. If you use Chris Glover's model, you're talking about a approx max of 2 (goals + assists) < 4 PPG

Atleast it's got a valid reasoning rather than subjective reasoning

                      "Oh he's fixture proof"

                      "Involved in every Fulham goal"

                      "Season keeper"

....just a few statements read today on Berba

Of course, but stats are often misleading..
Stats on actual performance often turn out to be true but I often find projections etc. never really turn out. After all, they can't tell the future.
We're yet to see if Berbatov is fixture-proof or a season keeper, but I guess the next 4 weeks will show us.

Fixtures are less important than players - clean sheets are a lot rarer than they used to be - Fulham will score - and he'll be the one doing it - he a striker that gives a decent number of assists too.

          Need some advice guys.

Want to get rid of Fletcher (£7.3) but not sure who for. Was thinking about swapping him for either:

          A. Berbatov (£7.2)
          B. Kone (£6.5)
          C. Any other suggestion

I have £0.4 in the bank.

I was originally thinking of Berbatov but his run in isn't that easy so thought Kone might be a better bet as I will then also free up some money to make improvements elsewhere.

My other striker are RVP & Tevez

Exactly the same position I find myself in. I'm fed up of Fletcher but not keen on Berbatov as he has Arsenal, Stoke and Chelsea away in his next 4.
Not too many options sadly in that price range. I'm thinking Crouch or Holt.

Fulham are a better attacking team but Fletcher will be involved in over 60-70% of Sunderland's goals. They've been poor so far but MON is a quality manager and they looked a much more creative team at the weekend than they have done so far. With strong fixtures I'd keep Fletcher.

60-70% of nothing is still nothing. Fletcher isn't that good anyway - just a run at the beginning of the season. I remember Amir Zaki and his start. Fletcher is not in the same league as Berba.

I wouldn't do it. Baines will get you almost the same points as Silva in his full form. Not to mention, he struggled after his previous injury as well. There are too many good mid-priced options out there to consider.

gw14 I'd look at ditching Pienaar for Michu (if you can afford) or Morrison/Ramirez. I'd try getting Sagna in for Santon too - Newcastle don't look likely to keep many cleanies with their Europa League exploits.

Definitely needs a few games. Long term I say yes, but for now stick with Morrison (although there is a risk of him dropping deep as Gera's been decent)

Uncanny. Hmm there is a lack of options at that price point now all the good 6.5 players have risen so much. Might have to downgrade elsewhere to afford Michu.

Yeah thats true, Morrison at risk of dropping deep, Nolan embarking on a poor run of fixtures. Lallana/Ramirez look decent shouts but Southampton looked poor vs WBA, although they are solid at home. Ramirez coming back from an injury is a risk so maybe Lallana is the best shout over the next few fixtures.

          11 games until 1 January.

Manu nice fixtures in 8 of these games
Liverpool nice fixtures in 6 of these games
City nice fixtures in 4 of these games

Trying to justify Aguero to Rooney or Suarez, but will probably give Aguero one more week to see how the rotation works and his form

Every United and City game is a "nice" game. If anything the games against stronger opposition are ending up in more goals this season. Don't get why anyone would bring in Suarez when Tevez is cheaper.

              Good point.
Already have RVP, but still consider to bring in Rooney for Aguero. Tevez for Aguero would perhaps be a sideways move.
Is Rooney as nailed and without rotation risk as RVP seems to be?

                Yes.

Tevez is a sideways move but the cash it frees up makes it worth it + he will get more gametime in the league until City clinch a Europa League spot. After the group stages, I'd say Aguero and Tevez will get rotated evenly, with Balotelli + Dzeko being used in Europa.

          Need some advice folks..

Have Defoe and Lambert and am. Looking to get rid.

Only have 0.1m in the bank, so it means getting rid of a big hitter midfielder.

Have Fellani/Cazorla/Mata/Bale/Sterling in midfield... Leaning towards shifting Cazorla. Good or bad move?

I've got two strikers I want to get rid of. Lambert and Fletcher. 0.7 in the bank. Should I:

              A) Do Fletcher to Crouch/Kone/Holt this week
              B) Save transfer this week and take both out for Ba and some cheap Reading striker next week

Look at the fixtures from now until then though. And no it doesn't. Crouch/Stoke are a worse attacking team than Fletcher/Sunderland whatever the stats say.

So Lambert to Ba and McAuley to a 3.9 defender next week for free, then? And keep Fletcher for 6 more gameweeks

lambert just as likely to score as a reading striker if not more. Not that i would want lambert in my team. can you not find more cash from mid or defence to do ba and better option for the two

I can do Lambert to Ba and McAuley to a 3.9 defender next week (if ba drops this week). But that would mean keeping Fletcher.....

Do you really think Sunderland will start scoring some goals soon?

Yup! I will keep him as my 3rd striker.

Siggy really should have signed for Liverpool

Staying with Swansea would have been a better option also. But continuing to work with Rodgers at a big club and playing every week really should have been a no brainer for him.

Yep.. Playing for a manager who obviously loves him or a madman who takes off a striker when chasing the game.
