A Gameweek that brought goals aplenty was lead by the resurgence of City’s tenacious frontman. He overshadowed another esteemed South American, with Merseyside’s supporting cast begin to catch the eye. As for United, they spluttered without success, with Fantasy managers finding little comfort and age-old arguments opened up once more…

The Player

In a Gameweek that saw City reinstate themselves on top of the Premier League, Carlos Tevez returned his biggest points haul of the season to re-announce himself as a heavy-hitting Fantasy asset.

While nobody was writing off Tevez, one goal in eight consecutive league appearances had seen our focus shift to other, glittering distractions, notably Luis Suarez.

In the week before the 5-0 drubbing of Villa, Tevez had been party to negative transfers for the second consecutive Gameweek, with a deficit of almost 80,000 trades over Gameweeks 10 and 11. There’s little doubt that the majority of those managers switched allegiance to Suarez, a player who had comfortably outscored Tevez over the previous four Gameweeks as he developed a new level of consistency to turn heads.

Regular points scoring was not an issue for Tevez but goals and double-figure returns had escaped him, only for the Argentine to play a pivotal role in putting Villa to the sword.

While a tap-in and penalty kick were amongst the easiest strikes that Tevez will notch this season, the confidence they will bring is surely the factor that will warm the hearts of those who have kept faith with the City man. His contribution of two assists typified a season that has seen Tevez remain at the forefront of City’s attacking play, despite their apparent troubles converting chances and killing off teams. Notably, Tevez has contributed to 50% or City’s goals when on the pitch.

David Silva’s return to midfield will be cited as the catalyst for the five-goal blitz and, ironically, while the orchestrations of the Spaniard will surely benefit Tevez’s output from this point on, Silva also opens the way for more managers to consider shedding the Argentine. Silva now offers the obvious alternative route for City attacking coverage and possibly a more secure one, given that rotation up front will surely bite over the busy Christmas programme.

That said, it’s very difficult to consider doing anything but nurturing the Fantasy worth of Tevez following Saturday’s showing. He proved his class and importance to the City cause and with Robin Van Persie stuttering to a blank at Carrow Road, provided a significant swing across the mini-leagues for those who backed him with the armband.

The Team

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool moved to seven league games unbeaten, flexing their muscles with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wigan. While Luis Suarez remains the dominant force and single most coveted Fantasy asset amongst the current Anfield crop, there was little doubt that Saturday’s outcome gave Fantasy managers further food for thought.

The decision to deploy Jose Enrique in an advanced role on the left, with Nuri Sahin benched, drew immediate dividends with the Spaniard fetching goal and assist returns, to accompany Liverpool’s third clean sheet of the season. Named in our “Differentials” going into the weekend, we could not have anticipated such an explosion from Enrique and there’s little doubt that, if he can remain deployed in such a role, he could offer outstanding value for his current Fantasy price tag (5.7 in the FPL, 6.9 in the Sky Sports game).

A knock-on effect of Enrique’s role in front of Glenn Johnson on the left is that it cements the start for Andre Wisdom at right-back. Outstanding this season, the 19-year-old has earned his place in Rodgers’ side, although Fantasy managers have been understandably hesitant to risk acquisition, even with a modest price on offer (4.5 in the FPL, 3.7 in Sky Sports). Wisdom has now started seven consecutive league matches under Rodgers and the fact that the Liverpool boss attempted to find a new role for Enrique would seem to indicate that he is doing his utmost to preserve Wisdom in his lineup.

The value offered by Wisdom in the Liverpool defence from this point on is mirrored by Raheem Sterling in attacking areas. His third place ranking in last week’s Watchlist update raised eyebrows and yet he justified this by delivering his second double-figure points haul of the season. Sterling continues to grow before our eyes as a player and Fantasy asset and, for those who have yet to succumb to the temptation of Suarez, he offers cover of the current Liverpool revolution for a mere 5.4 outlay in the FPL. It’s hard to argue against value like that whilst confidence is flowing through the Anfield gates.

The Talking Point

It was perhaps inevitable that with both Tevez and Suarez delivering double figure returns and even the likes of Santi Cazorla, Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale finding the net, that Van Persie would suffer a blank.

The Dutchman had opportunities to maintain a run that had seen him return either a goal or an assist on every league start thus far but a combination of Norwich resilience and the run of the ball, conspired to keep Van Persie at bay.

While that will have hugely frustrated his Fantasy owners, the majority of which will have surely placed the armband with their expensive striking asset, it showed a chink of light to the remaining Fantasy managers who go on scheming without him.

The argument for and against Van Persie will rage, with the Fantasy Premier League sitting back and admiring what appears to be an almost perfect balancing act with his price tag.

The fact that only four of the top 10 FPL managers currently have Van Persie in their lineup will offer comfort to those who have so far resisted, but that stat perhaps has more to do with the events of Gameweek 12 than the long-term strategy of the leading managers.

With Van Persie rested from Champions League duty and home fixtures against QPR and West Ham in the next seven days, the outlook of those clinging to the United man looks set to improve. Gameweek 12 was a thrill ride for those sans Van Persie but there are clearly plenty of scary moments to come.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Good afternoon,

Can you can please have a look over this team. Really not sure what to do with it.

2 frees with nothing in the bank. May as well make a transfer.

    Begovic, Schwazrer
    Baines, Simpson, Demel, Cuellar, Cameron
    Bale, Mata, Fellani, Sterling, Nolan
    RVP, Ba, Fletcher

Simpson may need to go but is there anything more pressing?

Tempted to do Ba and Baines to Suarez and Sagna after this gameweek. Good move?

Thank you and look forward to any replies.

Keep Baines at least for this week. Consider a Schwarzer downgrade to free up funds to help get rid of Fletcher after the double. Fulham won't be keeping many a clean sheet.

    Afternoon all,

I’m thinking of getting rid of Baines as I feel he hasn’t brought in the points i thought he would of and get a cheaper defender (prefereably Jose enrigue) and then upgrade else where,

    any thoughts?

Even this week, people were removing Tevez and Cazorla.

Patience and then some. If you're desperare for cash then it's worth considering.

Otherwise, persist irrelevant of the NOR fixture.

+1. Personally I am a bit frustrated with Eve defense myself (have both Howard and Baines), too. Yet, I intend to keep him in the squad. Why? IMO sooner, rather than later, Everton will be due to take a penalty (which has not happened for a while). Guess who will be the one to take it? 😉

Garrido is overprice as compared to Turner imo(strongly considerin).. 1 shot and 4 key passes in 11 games does not warrant a 0.4 difference.. Jones from WBA is another option i'm considerin too

    Repost.

    Hi guys!

    Please RMT

    Foster Bego
    Baines Rafael Ridgewell Wisdom Cuellar
    Bale Mata Fellaini Nolan Puncheon
    RVP Ba Berabtov

    0FT, Bank: 0.5

My plan is to ditch Baines after this week so that I can get either Theo or Silva for Nolan in GW14/GW15 I am leaning towards Walcott (if he doesn’t have a serious injury). I could also get Tevez later and ditch Ba (after his good run of fixtures ends).

I've a similar team and am mulling over a similar conundrum. Long term can't decide if Baines out is the right move, but would mean I could lose Nolan for Theo/Silva which at least now, both appear good options. Certainly wait this week, you're fine for the mo.

Thanks mate. I just don't see Baines warranting the price tag and Silva/Walcott could do really well. This week I will wait for sure. If I was to ditch Baines I would get Shorey with the DGW in mind.

    Cazorla – HBA – Michu – Nolan – Fellaini
    RVP – Berbatov – Tevez

Tevez - Averaging 76 minutes per week which is what I'd expect to continue, if not more the way things are going and he is still raking in points. Selling him a few weeks ago was my worst decision so far this season as far as transfers are concerned.

I think that with City done with the CL, his starts are more assured than before (with some rotation around christmas.) Dzeko will remain sub, Ballotelli will be looking for greener pastures. Don't see why Mancini won't start Tev and Kun for *almost* every match.

All moves look decent with perhaps the exception of losing Baines. Not wild on Enrique, but like Hangeland to Raf is decent.

Tks Eddie, just watched the replay of the 'pool game and Enrique was in everything playing LW.
Just concerned Rodgers may revert to two up front away but it would be hard to drop him after that impressive display.

I may yet be converted, I was a big fan of his two season's back. You're right. he looked to be involved in everything. I'm just not sure if his place (certainly oop) is secure. Can anyone shed more light on this?

So we see 3 PL matches in 7 days next week, with CL and UEFA cup beforehand. I’m guessing the seasoned pros on here are already onto this thought, but here goes:

Most likely source of rotation over this period (IMO) will be Chelsea & Man City, particularly in Mid for Chelsea and attack for City. Any thoughts?

ManU having already qualified for CL knock out can go all guns blazing in the PL meaning no rest for RVP or worst case, he’ll start and score some goals in 70 mins then come off. Here's hoping!

Best ploy for FT’s? Surely hold out for 2x midweek when we see the teamsheets at 18:45 and 19:00 and watch the casuals lose ground? 🙂

wisdom is a puzzler, the only times i've seen him play (not that much admittedly) he's look hesitant, labouring on the ball and in general like he's hanging on in there the whole time. but rodgers cleary likes him and at 4.5 that's surely too good to ignore, he's already showed in the cups he has random goals and assists in him. i rate liverpool as the 2nd best defence in the league behind man city

Since Aguero has come back from injury, he has only started 5 out of 8 (In comparison to Tevez, 7 out of 8).

Aguero has 41 points over those games, Tevez has 49 points.

Before the weekend it was 30 points compared to 30 points.

I am confident that Aguero will outscore Tevez when starting, just Mancini's rotation has killed him. Obviously Tevez has value though, it's just whether you can make the difference count and whether you value Aguero's captaincy option more also.

I just read some of the discussions about Baines on a previous article because I was out earlier. The issue here in my opinion is that for Baines' threat and chance creation he was price appropriately at 7.0m. And he offers the security of bonus attacking points if he fails to keep a CS. And the fact that he is on penalties is a real attraction.

My angle on it is that going without Baines is not and should not be treated as heresy. If you are a stats junkie (and I do enjoy trawling through as many as I can too) Baines can become an idol-like figure. His stats are worth salivating over most weeks. But here's the rub, this game isn't about only stats. If we could all have the best players with the best stats we would. But we can't. We have to have a certain strategy to play this game and it comes down to being conscious of value/money/fixtures/stats and form.

I'm not saying getting rid of Baines is the world's best idea. It isn't...

But there are actually so many avenues to explore in this game and in particular...defenders offers some spectacular value for money.

Looking at it objectively, I think we would all rather have a City/Arsenal/Man Utd defender at good times in the season. And having Baines restricts your ability to load your defence with some fantastically valuable assest...not to mention differentials. On current form, I would never dream of owning an Everton defender...not in a million years. But I do because it's Baines and his stats are oh so good. But that just isn't going to cut it. I feel like I'll end up winding more depressed owning Baines than being without him. After all, who would buy Jagielka/Distin/Heitinga etc? No-one...because they're woefully underperforming in FPL.

Feel free to give your thoughts on this...thanks!

the thing about stats is that, it can 'predict' points in the future.

e.g. would you rather have player A who have 2 sucessful cross whole season with 2 assist.
or player B who has no assist and with 25 sucessful crosses?

Yes but while we would all prefer to have player B. Player A can be a number of defenders that a) are not owned by as many people, b) are playing for better/more solid teams and c) easily benched when you want to play someone else.

You can't bench Baines...which is at times a real pain.

i think we (guessing most have him) have been bailed out by some bonus points lately and there's no doubting everton's conceding is now a serious concern. penalties and the crazy amount of assists he goes close to every single game mean i'm sticking. 2 penalties = 3 bonus clean sheets, possibly 4 if bps come with them.

      Agree with everything you said.

The problem though is the lack of CSs from other 'elite' defenders and therefore the lack of value in buying the like of Kompany. Many of the other defenders at the big clubs aren't nailed either.

At some point, Baines out may well be a valid shout. Just because he hasn't had big returns for a few games, it doesn't mean now is the time.

I'm also not sure than upgrading players higher up the field will necessarily get you more points due to the wealth of value available this year.

Your 4th paragraph is spot on.

I was all set to upgrade Silva to Cazorla/Silva a few weeks ago but refrained from doing so, as I believe Michu will keep scoring consistent points throughout the season.

I wouldn't think of downgrading Baines to upgrade Michu, for instance.

Of course, there is no guarantee of it. But the way it looks for me is that if I stuck with Baines all season I'd be sacrificing ever owning the likes of Suarez/Aguero/Silva to name but a few. There is also a great satisfaction to buying differential defenders that offer great value and are owned by less people (thus giving you points that others don't have at certain times)

I got so much satisfaction from doubling up on West Ham pre-season. It showed I judged the fixtures, the manager's tactics and the budget value potential. These little tweaks and adventurous endeavours to find value are sometimes under-rated because there are such template ideas about who to own in defence in particular. Setting yourself apart from the crowd when it comes to defence has a lot of merit to it.

The problem that is keeping people away is what happened last year. That Clichy the stronger defender played the more difficult games and Kolarov the easyer ones. That seems to have changed now though, with the new system ofthen used.

The problem with Clichy has been that Mancini only trusts Kolarov as a LB in a 442 in easy home games, therefore Clichy often misses out on CS's despite playing most of the time.

            Gw4 was a bad guess..GW6..so the last 6 gameweeks (Southampton, Wigan, QPR, Liverpool, Fulham, Sunderland and Reading) he has scored 20 points. In that time players from those teams that have outscored Baines are;
Norwich - Garrido has scored 34 points
Sunderland - Cuellar 20 but played one less game (O'Shea 24)
Stoke - Cameron/Shawcross (28 and 32) Huth has outscored him also
West Ham - O'Brien has outscored him by 7 points despite starting in 3 games (or 4 less than Baines)

Those are the best run for a defender you will get, and he only scraped over 3ppg.
Nothing is stopping anyone from getting Baines + those teams but there is a budget and the likes of Silva, Mata, Walcott, Cazorla, Bale, Suarez, Tevez, Aguero, Ba, RVP etc. are sure as hell demanding more investment than Baines.

And those were just examples, I've not looked at every defender from those teams but I bet they've outscored him if they had the gametime.
I got Baines in GW2! And I've not planned on ditching yet, but with the fixtures he has realistically you'll be relying solely on attacking stats, and given the fact that he will be up against teams that will attack more he will be forced to defend. As for penalties, well..they don't get many do they? Something like 2 penalties since GW2 last year.

The worrying thing about Baines going into these difficult fixtures is that he will have to score attacking points to be viable as the chances of CS is very low.

I for one will be taking advantage of his appreciation value on options such as Enrique before getting him back at hopefully a depreciated price in the Jan WC.

It doesn't matter about form with them. They will keep more CS over the season than most other teams. It's been a slow start but it will happen. You don't win the league/finish in the top 4 without keeping Clean sheets.

          Your statements are contradictory!

Surely the name of this game is to use your trades wisely in predicting ebbs and flows? I agree Baines will be the highest def scorer at the end of the season however I bet others will out score him before the Jan WC which could provide a great differential.

The argument, and it's pretty solid, is that prediction success is very poor. Hence loads of people getting burnt by going fixtures over form.

Baines has barely managed any cs over this period anyway and is still so high. So little to lose.

T I agree, this is a repeat of all day yesterday. We don't have crystal balls, comes down to personal choice. Having hi doesn't impact me financially, basically playing an extra mid every week, with cs potential. Still tops defenders pts, the rest can't be doing that well.

No-one has. But it doesn't mean Baines is essential to a good FPL team. Having the top scoring defender over the season won't decide your ranking. Ivanovic could end up being top 5 but I have no intention of ever buying him.

Rafael is a good example of someone who has scored well and is nailed onto a top 4 team. I would much rather sell Baines than Rafael as CS potential is higher and goals potential is there. And he cost 5.6m which was a bargain.

This is a perfectly balanced and sensible view and pretty much everyone round here will agree. The reason you were getting a lot of resistance initially is because you'd taken more or less the polar opposite view to the "Baines is essential" point of view and started just saying "Baines OUT!"

You can't pull people to the sensible middle ground by being an extremist yourself!

Clyne and Wilson are must outs. Looks like Demel is not nailed on and Riise is really overpriced for his value in that he's hard to play away. Depending on how much cash you have, I would look to get Wilson and Clyne out first though. If you need some cash though, Riise out or downgrade HBA.

    Need a few suggestions here.
If i were to have a frontline of rvp-suarez-tevez
    and midfield consisting of michu-fellaini-bale-hazard
would my defence ( demel , gorkss, rafael) really matter?
I have 2 4.0 defenders starting thats why im asking, even though West Ham have had like 5 cs so far this season. Plus I reckon demel will be starting again pretty soon.
Bear in mind in order to bring that frontline ill be taking an 8 pt hit.
Also, I probly wont be able to do it later cause of the price rises.
    Thoughts?
