A Gameweek that brought goals aplenty was lead by the resurgence of City’s tenacious frontman. He overshadowed another esteemed South American, with Merseyside’s supporting cast begin to catch the eye. As for United, they spluttered without success, with Fantasy managers finding little comfort and age-old arguments opened up once more…

The Player

In a Gameweek that saw City reinstate themselves on top of the Premier League, Carlos Tevez returned his biggest points haul of the season to re-announce himself as a heavy-hitting Fantasy asset.

While nobody was writing off Tevez, one goal in eight consecutive league appearances had seen our focus shift to other, glittering distractions, notably Luis Suarez.

In the week before the 5-0 drubbing of Villa, Tevez had been party to negative transfers for the second consecutive Gameweek, with a deficit of almost 80,000 trades over Gameweeks 10 and 11. There’s little doubt that the majority of those managers switched allegiance to Suarez, a player who had comfortably outscored Tevez over the previous four Gameweeks as he developed a new level of consistency to turn heads.

Regular points scoring was not an issue for Tevez but goals and double-figure returns had escaped him, only for the Argentine to play a pivotal role in putting Villa to the sword.

While a tap-in and penalty kick were amongst the easiest strikes that Tevez will notch this season, the confidence they will bring is surely the factor that will warm the hearts of those who have kept faith with the City man. His contribution of two assists typified a season that has seen Tevez remain at the forefront of City’s attacking play, despite their apparent troubles converting chances and killing off teams. Notably, Tevez has contributed to 50% or City’s goals when on the pitch.

David Silva’s return to midfield will be cited as the catalyst for the five-goal blitz and, ironically, while the orchestrations of the Spaniard will surely benefit Tevez’s output from this point on, Silva also opens the way for more managers to consider shedding the Argentine. Silva now offers the obvious alternative route for City attacking coverage and possibly a more secure one, given that rotation up front will surely bite over the busy Christmas programme.

That said, it’s very difficult to consider doing anything but nurturing the Fantasy worth of Tevez following Saturday’s showing. He proved his class and importance to the City cause and with Robin Van Persie stuttering to a blank at Carrow Road, provided a significant swing across the mini-leagues for those who backed him with the armband.

The Team

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool moved to seven league games unbeaten, flexing their muscles with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wigan. While Luis Suarez remains the dominant force and single most coveted Fantasy asset amongst the current Anfield crop, there was little doubt that Saturday’s outcome gave Fantasy managers further food for thought.

The decision to deploy Jose Enrique in an advanced role on the left, with Nuri Sahin benched, drew immediate dividends with the Spaniard fetching goal and assist returns, to accompany Liverpool’s third clean sheet of the season. Named in our “Differentials” going into the weekend, we could not have anticipated such an explosion from Enrique and there’s little doubt that, if he can remain deployed in such a role, he could offer outstanding value for his current Fantasy price tag (5.7 in the FPL, 6.9 in the Sky Sports game).

A knock-on effect of Enrique’s role in front of Glenn Johnson on the left is that it cements the start for Andre Wisdom at right-back. Outstanding this season, the 19-year-old has earned his place in Rodgers’ side, although Fantasy managers have been understandably hesitant to risk acquisition, even with a modest price on offer (4.5 in the FPL, 3.7 in Sky Sports). Wisdom has now started seven consecutive league matches under Rodgers and the fact that the Liverpool boss attempted to find a new role for Enrique would seem to indicate that he is doing his utmost to preserve Wisdom in his lineup.

The value offered by Wisdom in the Liverpool defence from this point on is mirrored by Raheem Sterling in attacking areas. His third place ranking in last week’s Watchlist update raised eyebrows and yet he justified this by delivering his second double-figure points haul of the season. Sterling continues to grow before our eyes as a player and Fantasy asset and, for those who have yet to succumb to the temptation of Suarez, he offers cover of the current Liverpool revolution for a mere 5.4 outlay in the FPL. It’s hard to argue against value like that whilst confidence is flowing through the Anfield gates.

The Talking Point

It was perhaps inevitable that with both Tevez and Suarez delivering double figure returns and even the likes of Santi Cazorla, Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale finding the net, that Van Persie would suffer a blank.

The Dutchman had opportunities to maintain a run that had seen him return either a goal or an assist on every league start thus far but a combination of Norwich resilience and the run of the ball, conspired to keep Van Persie at bay.

While that will have hugely frustrated his Fantasy owners, the majority of which will have surely placed the armband with their expensive striking asset, it showed a chink of light to the remaining Fantasy managers who go on scheming without him.

The argument for and against Van Persie will rage, with the Fantasy Premier League sitting back and admiring what appears to be an almost perfect balancing act with his price tag.

The fact that only four of the top 10 FPL managers currently have Van Persie in their lineup will offer comfort to those who have so far resisted, but that stat perhaps has more to do with the events of Gameweek 12 than the long-term strategy of the leading managers.

With Van Persie rested from Champions League duty and home fixtures against QPR and West Ham in the next seven days, the outlook of those clinging to the United man looks set to improve. Gameweek 12 was a thrill ride for those sans Van Persie but there are clearly plenty of scary moments to come.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I personally am going away from the so called must have OOP mids. And will sell my last one this week or the next, I think its time for a switch of the template to at least 3 big hitting mids- Hazard/Bale/Mata/Caz/Walcott/Silva and even Young Nani and Valencia have crossed my mind.

At a crossroads now with my team after some decent weeks followed by the week from hell.

I'm tempted to save the transfer now and roll out a 4-3-3 this week only because most of my defenders have decent fixtures and I don't fancy too many mids:

    Begovic
    Baines Bardsley Sagna Boyce
    Mata Bale Sterling
    RVP Berb Lambert

    Bench: Foster, Nolan Demel Fellaini

Then next week I have Fellaini back, probably look to lose a more expensive defender and get a pricier striker in. By then Suarez might have got his yellow. Heck, Michu might have too. Best to stay away from them for now.

That's the cautious strategy, but I know there's the chance of simply picking up a disappointing score and missing out on yet more big striker and midfielder hauls. So if I was to upgrade this week, do you recommend
    A) big midfielders
    B) big strikers

    And who?

Striker. That midfield looks like they could rack up a fair few points, especially with Fellaini to come back in. How much do you have in the bank? With RVP and a strong midfield i'm guessing not much. If you don't want to plump for Suarez (or don't have the cash right now) i'd have a look at Fletcher or Long for Lambert.

i had exactly the same points like you this week (35) and we are also very similar overall rank, so i share your pain. really bad pain...

as to your question, the big midfielders to consider are valencia, walcot, santi and silva.honestly arsenal fixtures and for are more apealling than most, so i would go leftfield and change lambert to giroud if you can afford.if not, fletcher is a good forward thinking move, or instead just fellaini to sess (i know - crazy, but DGW and potential).

Cheers, we share our pain! Horrible end to the run 😆

Nicely summarized, Walcott and secondly Silva are the ones I'm considering.

Keen to keep Lambert as I feel he's turning the corner and could be super value. Got to keep him for this run anyway, and he assisted and scored this fortnight.

I could do Bale > Walcott and Berb > Ba for a hit.

        Or Berb to giroud/BA.

Trying to work out my defense for this GW.

Currently going for the following on the field:

    Begovic (ful)
Rafael (qpr) / Boyce (rdg) / Cameron (ful)

    with the bench being:

    Mignolet (wba)
    Risgewell (SUN) / Gorkss (WIG).

So basically I am banking on double Stoke getting a clean sheet against Fulham, as I think both WBA and Sunderland will score to cancel out Migs and Ridgewll.

Sure. But given Fulham have only been outscored by the Manc clubs so far, it might not be too good having both. Wigan are better than people think, but still pretty inconsistent, so that could be a low-scoring fixture.

Sunderland have also been lacking teeth, at least until this past gameweek, so I'd consider chucking Ridgewell in rather than doubling up on Stoke. Perhaps.

any advice about a change that is worth a hit?

    begovich (foster)
    baines, cameron, mcaully (demel, nelsen)
    silva mata bale morison sterling
    RVP ba (berbatov)

Never bench Berbatov. Bench Morrison away or Sterling. Skip the hit. I also don't think Silva for Fellaini was the worst idea; MNC attacking exposure is important.

you are right of course about silva's potential - but city has some tough fixtures - i guess long term silva is best but next few weeks i can see valencia or walcot as more profitable options. bereba benching is because i play cameron and begovich - but not sure it makes sense...

Is that the Everton of the last few years though? As in...the Everton that "always start of slowly" 😉

It's a pretty big decision I feel, to sell or not to sell.
Buying him at 7M there is only a 0.3M loss IF he were to become necessary again. Looking from GW22 - SWA sot WBA AVL mun nor RDG I'd want him back on the WC but he really shouldn't have risen before then even if he did alright, best case scenario is he continues the poor form in these bad fixtures and he's back down to 7.3 or less..

I think if he's leading the transfers out stat for defenders or is close then plenty of casuals will also sell him, so if everyone on here sells next week then his price could plummet if he doesn't produce.

      Need a few suggestions here.
If i were to have a frontline of rvp-suarez-tevez
      and midfield consisting of michu-fellaini-bale-hazard
would my defence ( demel , gorkss, rafael) really matter?
I have 2 4.0 defenders starting thats why im asking, even though West Ham have had like 5 cs so far this season. Plus I reckon demel will be starting again pretty soon.
Bear in mind in order to bring that frontline ill be taking an 8 pt hit.
Also, I probly wont be able to do it later cause of the price rises.
      Thoughts??

      Hello,

      some UCL advice please?

I'm allready on -8 with transfers and just found out that Walcott is out due to injury :/ Need to get these points back somehow.

Have 8.0 in the bank, my midfield is Oscar - Willan - Reus - Fegoulli.

      Who would you pick?

      A) Isco
      B) Lucho Gonzales
      C) Pirlo/Marchisio
      D) Cazorla (although i took him out for Walcott, seems funny to do it)
      E) Kroos

Beric, I agree with your midfield philosophy. That trio doesn't form or fix, they will always be a threat. See O'Brien's goal last night? Nolan was two yards away from him.

Well said. All the big hitters have been hit and miss Fellaini/Michu/Nolan are essentially three extra strikers, they play every game and get goals in surprising fixtures. And as for sterling - I bought him at 4.6 so he's just my bench fodder - albeit excellent bench fodder.

Regarding Nani: I think he could be given a chance this weekend with Young, Welbeck and Chicha all proabably playing 90 today. And I have seen worse punts for 2 gameweeks, given that he is fit of course.

I can't see them all playing 90 today to be honest, and Nani has played a whopping 26 minutes since Gameweek 6. He has been "injured" the last 2 or so weeks but he is massively out of favour and massively out of form too. Can't see him getting more than 70 minutes over two weeks.

I doubt FPL will change it. Any idea if Hernandez was given his hat trick?
