Man United’s upcoming run of games looks set to see plenty investment thrown their way over the festive period. Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal all look enticing options, though Newcastle and Sunderland are set for a testing time ahead as we assess the strength of schedule over the next four to six Gameweeks:

The Strong

Man United

Six points clear at the top of the table after Sunday’s win at City, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are afforded the perfect opportunity to rack up the points in their bid to retain the title. United are now set to welcome Sunderland, Newcastle and West Brom to Old Trafford and also travel to Swansea and Wigan in their next five fixtures – a schedule that is surely set to earn their main Fantasy assets significant investment.

Wayne Rooney has more than matched Robin Van Persie’s performances over their nine starts together and is picking up in ownership after back-to-back doubles, though the Dutchman’s consistency is likely to earn him the armband across those matches. Rafael came to the fore last weekend with a pair of assists and is third top scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player for United with 63 points, though with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones pushing for starting roles, the Brazilian may suffer from rest and rotation over the busy festive period. With injuries and poor form blighting the midfield, it’s hard to look beyond Rooney and Van Persie as the most secure route into Ferguson’s lineup right now.

Tottenham

Andre Villas-Boas will be looking for a response after Spurs succumbed to a late Everton comeback at Goodison last Sunday. The London outfit had won their previous three upon the return to action of Mousa Dembele and will be keen to capitalise on a superb run of games. Swansea and Stoke roll up to the Lane in the next two before Spurs then face four of the bottom five (avl, sun, RDG, qpr) in consecutive Gameweeks.

Gareth Bale may even be back as soon as this Sunday, according to his manager, and has slipped from 9.9 to 9.6 in FPL over the last week, while Jermain Defoe is just two points behind the Welshman– a clear sign of his consistency this term. Villas-Boas’ decision to roll out a 4-4-2 at Everton, with Emmanuel Adebayor partnering Defoe up top, may be bad news for Clint Dempsey upon Bale’s comeback, while the impending return of Benoit Assou-Ekotto raises too many question marks over Villas-Boas’ likely back-four. With a single clean sheet since Gameweek 7, though, not many Fantasy managers will be overly enthused with the Tottenham defence.

Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers’ side continued their recent upturn in form with an impressive win at West Ham last Sunday – all the more so given they were without the suspended Luis Suarez. With the Uruguayan now available again, Liverpool welcome Villa, Fulham and Sunderland to Anfield in the next five, with a trip to QPR also on their short-term agenda.

With a single goal conceded in their last five at Anfield, defensive returns look appealing – Glen Johnson shifted onto the radar after a stunning strike against the Hammers, though Jose Enrique should return this weekend after being subbed off as a precaution at Upton Park. Raheem Sterling’s cut-price appeal continues to earn the winger new investment, while Steven Gerrard’s more advanceD role since the return of Lucas may persuade those looking for a differential to take a chance. Suarez looks a real armband option for those home games, though it’s worth noting he has found the net in only three of his eight Anfield appearances so far.

Arsenal

The Gunners’ schedule remains strong – whether their main Fantasy assets can take advantage is another matter entirely. Nevertheless, they’ll be buoyed by a run of games which sees them travel to Reading, Wigan and Southampton in the next five in addition to home clashes with West Ham and Newcastle. Arsene Wenger’s side will be looking to build on last Saturday’s home win over West Brom, though Olivier Giroud is a concern – he was ruled out of last night’s Capital One Cup clash with Bradford due to a back injury.

With Theo Walcott still sidelined, hopes will be resting on Santo Cazorla to pick up the returns after a disappointing recent run, though Gervinho may come into the equation as the lone forward if Giroud is out for any length of time. Mikel Arteta’s role as spot-kick taker is frustrating – while he notched a pair of penalties in the weekend win over West Brom, the Spaniard had previously scored once all season.

Also Consider

West Brom – home clashes with West Ham and Norwich, in addition to a trip to QPR in the next three, offer Steve Clarke’s side a chance to return to winning ways after three straight losses. Clarke’s penchant for rotation has dented his side’s appeal of late but if they are arrest their slide down the table, the likes of Shane Long, James Morrison and Chris Brunt could be crucial. With a single clean sheet since Gameweek 5, faith in their backline continues to dissipate.

Fulham – a much-needed morale boosting win over Newcastle takes Martin Jol’s side into a run of fixtures which offers them three strong looking home ties (SOT, SWA, WIG) and a trip to QPR in the next six Gameweeks. Dimitar Berbatov may have struck five successive blanks but his performance against the Magpies still looked promising – Damien Duff has now overtaken the Bulgarian in the FPL standings and looks a decent shout at 6.1 in FPL. With one clean sheet in their last eight, John Arne Riise’s owners may be reliant on his creativity and corner kick duties to bolster his score unless the Cottagers can find a little more resilience at the back.

Man City – Sunday’s derby defeat will have dented their confidence but the champions’ schedule affords Roberto Mancini reason to be optimistic over the festive period. Home clashes against Reading and Stoke are supplemented by trips to out-of-sorts Newcastle and Sunderland and with City now six points behind United, Mancini simply can afford no more slip-ups. A backline that conceded three in nine games prior to United’s visit will be hoping Vincent Kompany can recover from a groin injury – Matija Nastasic may be guaranteed game time if the Belgian is ruled out and, while David Silva looks a guaranteed midfield starter, Mancini’s forward tinkering continues to prove hugely frustrating from a Fantasy persecptive.

The Weak

Newcastle

Monday’s defeat extended the Magpies’ recent poor run of form to just a single win in their last 10 matches and the upcoming schedule is likely to deter many. Alan Pardew’s side are now set to face City, United, Arsenal, Everton and Norwich in their next six, with only a Gameweek 18 home clash against QPR offering any respite.

Demba Ba’s owners will be a little apprehensive despite his sensational start to the season – with plenty other forwards afforded strong festive fixtures, he may struggle for further investment. At the back, a defence that has registered two clean sheets so far will offer plenty hope to their upcoming opponents, while Hatem Ben Arfa’s return from injury and subsequent goal against Fulham may bring the Frenchman back onto radars, now that Pardew has reverted to 4-3-3.

Norwich

Chris Hughton’s side have a tricky run of fixtures ahead but clearly have the form to overcome them. While a home clash with Wigan this weekend looks an ideal opportunity to extend their nine-game unbeaten run, the Canaries them face trips to West Brom and West Ham, while welcoming City and Chelsea to Carrow Road in the following four.

With four straight wins in front of their own fans, though, including victories over United and Arsenal, Hughton will be far from fazed with the festive schedule, while last weekend’s 4-3 win over Swansea saw an upturn in attacking potential as confidence continues to course through the Canaries. Having conceded in each of their last four, the clean sheets have started to dry up, though the likes of Robert Snodgrass (double figures in two of his last three) and Anthony Pilkington (double figures in each of his last two home games) have suggested they could still prosper.

Sunderland

The Black Cats will be buoyed after seeing off Reading last night but Martin O’Neill’s side now steel themselves for a schedule that could well dent their bid for survival and leave them struggling as we enter the New Year. Up next, O’Neill’s men face United, City, Spurs and Liverpool in the next five and with a trip to a resurgent Southampton also on the cards, it’s difficult to afford them any optimism, as Fantasy managers quickly dispense of their double Gameweek assets. Stephane Sessegnon, Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson look on course to shed plenty ownership as we reassess out Fantasy options ahead of the packed fixture schedule.

Also Be Wary Of

Stoke – a goalless draw at Villa earned Tony Pulis’ side their eighth clean sheet in 16 Gameweeks but the next few fixtures look a real test of their defensive mettle. The Potters now square up to Everton, Spurs, Liverpool, City and Chelsea in the next six Gameweeks – owners of Asmir Begovic and Ryan Shawcross could struggle for returns in the short-term, while an attack that has produced six goals in the last eight is offered little respite to pick up in performance.

Wigan – the Latics are geared for a tough run of games that could well see them struggle for points over the next few. Wigan have shipped at least two goals in each of their previous six and with matches against Norwich, Arsenal, Everton and United on the horizon, Ali Al-Habsi may be reliant on save points to bolster his score over December. Arouna Kone remains the Latics’ top FPL scorer but one goal since Gameweek 7 sums up his current form.

    thoughts on Ciaran Clark?

Villa appear to have tightened up in recent games, and after the next 3 they have a really nice run. He seems to be a decent goal threat and a BP magnet. Looking at getting him for Huth at some point as part of a Villa defensive double up with Guzan

Doubling up on villa? Risky but could pay off, we won't really keep clean sheets away from home but at home we look solid, Guzan has been quality and has really improved as a keeper, last season he couldnt claim anything and was known as a shot stopper but this season he has claimed everything looks like a new keeper. Also as the BP system shows claiming now gives you good BP

GW21 looks like the ideal time to switch him in for Huth.

If Foster is fit he will do until GW20 when Guzan comes in, then Clark the week after.

Thought about Benteke as well, but I'm not sure he's there yet, so I'll stick to Ba

Benteke is an animal, everything we do goes through him and when we score 9/10 he would of assisted or scored the goal. 6.5m is a bit pricey seems Villa havent scored too many in the prem so far however we are improving every week and look more threating, with the fixtures coming up he could be a good shout

keep Caulker, Evans potentially injured, I'd get Rafa or Vidic. With that mid and 1 cheap striker you must have a low team value, try to get people in who will rise twice, then sell them to build it a little before you get the players you.

Long is a short term punt IMO. I have him and am looking to move him on GW20

I went to Barca last year and we were on one of those coach tours that couldn't stop anywhere too long. Unbelievably we weren't even scheduled to stop at Camp Nou so I asked the driver if we could and he altered the itinerary to give us a very brief jump off, gaze at the stadium and jump back on. Wish I'd just let the tour bus leave me behind and gone to a game 😆

just something about the baps dilemma. i streamed the sunderland game last night so that's how i noticed the cuellar block as i had bbc sport open simultaneously which popped up with o'shea. as for the villa stoke game i'm a benteke owner so was closely watching him on MOTD. one of the first second half clips was one of his shots being blocked by cameron, as about 2 hours later i'd been doing bp predictions i remembered the only blocks in that game, both from benteke shots, had gone to shawcross. i quickly checked the minutes and checked with 2 other sources (skysports scorecentre live text, and espn soccernet) and both backed up it was that incident, not that it needed backing up, cameron has jet black hair and shawcross is blond/bald.
if i didn't do bp predictions i wouldn't have noticed either as if im ever watching a match i don't need bbc sport and visa versa.
it's an awkward situation all round and i think it's just a freak thing that this specific bonus system which FPL uses makes blocks so treasured, especially in 0-0s. i think of all the incidents in matches (e.g goals, assists, corners, fouls, throw-ins, crosses, clearances etc) blocks are the hardest to put a player name to as in some cases they happen at 100mph (literally) and in crowded penalty areas. again it's just a freak thing that something which is so hard to see is seemingly worth so much (4ppi). sometimes it's easy if for example cuellar grows a nice beard to distinguish him, other times the payer number you have as a source.
so yeah i wouldn't rage at FPL, it's a free to play game and they simply use what they get fed, were we paying to play maybe it's different. i lost a point in this whole thing but i'm delighted to have lost it

Cheers for working out so many PPI mysteries AB.

Thing is, if what they get fed is unreliable (I say unreliable because PA live text mistakes genuinely seem to happen every fortnight) they do need to process it as if it were unreliable. That means giving out the BPs once they're right, instead of putting them out prematurely and changing them if eagle-eyed people like you spot it.

Still, it is free so there's a limit to how much to be aggrieved.

Maybe as Pasqualinho says labeling them as 'provisional' will mean we can get the BPs on time on a provisional basis, knowing they could change at any moment...

it's tough though, the only way to check is essentially re-watch all the games, making the process of being fed data pointless. i think the main issue in general though is who the hell cares who made a block? their educated guesses which always seem to be shawcross if there's any doubt for stoke (disgruntled shawcross owners, trust me, you've benfitted from more rogue blocks and therfore bps already) suffice in every single walk of life barring FPL where blocks matter. yes you can say their only job is to note down what's happening in the match so why can't they get it right, maybe, just not sure they have the luxury to pause rewind and check etc when there is already the next piece of match action which needs typing up.

I can tell you that OPTA's way of recording stats is done with the utmost precision and professionalism and they do all this with a live crew that scans every camera angle. If they need to confirm they just do a speedy rewind.

yep, have been in their waterloo office and watched it happen. for every shot you have to tick about 6 different boxes and mark down the exact point the shot was taken, where it ended up and even note down things like curl

Do you need to cover other teams? It only matters who will get you most points. If Rooney RVP Ba/Defoe/Suarez gets you more points than RVP Suarez Ba/Defoe or whatever, then go with the former (as long as you don't need to sacrifice to much elsewhere to afford it).

This may sound weird Pepin, but I prefer Iniesta to Messi. I can't see them live anytime soon but on tv, some of the things Iniesta does with are magical. He caresses it with such care and I think he is the one player who can make simple things look beautiful. Amazing close control too. Brilliant.
