One from the archive. An old article revived and remodelled for 2013 – “This much we know” will combine fact and speculation gathered from the weekend’s action, blended with our dubious opinions, to hand you an extra morsels to chew over when Monday’s lunch bell rings. Today we’re pondering rotation hangovers, old King Cole and the contrasting fortunes in the North-East…

Rafa remains defiant…
Let’s no kid ourselves – we’re in for a rough ride. We can only thank our lucky stars that Rafa Benitez was unable to revive Chelsea’s Champions League fortunes – had he kept them in that particular hat, our situation would have been worse. As it is, following Sunday’s decision to start with Fernando Torres and Rafa’s defiant response to critics post-match (see our Scout Notes ), it’s clear that those who invest in Stamford Bridge pack are buying into agony and frustration further down the road. While Juan Mata looks worthy of all the heartache, it’s questionable whether there’s merit in holding Demba Ba given that, on every third match, the doubts will rear their head.

Joe Cole looks an option…
The spell in France looks to have revived Joe Cole’s appetite, while his talent is clearly still burning bright. Our members can dive into his performance statistics in detail but, suffice to say, Cole’s contribution to the cause against QPR amounted to much more than just a tap-in for the equaliser. At 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Cole is far kinder on the budget than Kevin Nolan and, on the evidence of Saturday and based on Nolan’s lengthy goal drought, he’s already looking an interesting option. Three away trips in the next four dampen the enthusiasm somewhat but at least give us time to assess whether Cole can maintain his promising start.

Andy Carroll won’t starve once he’s fit….
The number of balls delivered into the QPR box was quite simply ridiculous. Ryan Nelsen and Clint Hill stood firm with air raid sirens ringing, only to be caught late on. If the Hammers can maintain such relentless delivery from both Matt Jarvis and Cole once Andy Carroll is back fit then surely West Ham are lined up to profit. Sam Allardyce is already purring at the thought of Carroll’s ponytailed bonce getting on the end of such service in an article published this morning. Interestingly, even the much-maligned Marouane Chamkh looked dangerous as a result of the Hammers assault and if Big Sam can make that happen…

Reading are up for the fight…
A late turnaround against the Baggies in Gameweek 22 was bettered by Adam Le Fondre’s salvo on Tyneside on Saturday. From nowhere, the Royals’ chances of clinging to top flight status are revived and suddenly the likes of Newcastle and Villa are left gazing at a trapdoor. With three home games in the next four, Brian McDermott’s side even have a platform to kick-on from their back-to-back wins. Can Fantasy managers get in on the act? Ian Harte looks to have the left-back role nailed on if you fancy defensive investment with a touch of set-piece promise, while Jimmy Kebe and Pavel Pogrebnyak look likely routes for those scratching around for the cheapest cuts in midfield and attack.

Newcastle remain in freefall…
We might be biased, with the Senegal striker in the Picks this week, but Papiss Cisse really could have bagged a hat-trick. Adam Federici did his job, however, defying the odds with one flying save from Cisse’s snatched header particularly impressing. Opportunities weren’t taken, then, and despite Yohan Cabaye’s return helping to get creative juices flowing, Newcastle remain in trouble and scratching for points and inspiration. Alan Pardew is fighting to maintain morale, both on the pitch and in the stands and Gameweek 24’s trip to Aston Villa suddenly looks to be a match that could shape the remainder of the season for both teams. Lose that, and Newcastle go into fixtures with Chelsea and Spurs, with Fantasy managers surely circling the likes of Mata and Gareth Bale with confidence that they’ll be the latest to profit from Newcastle’s alarming decline.

The Black Cats have their claws out…
Just to compound the misery at St James’ Park, Martin O’Neill seems to have turned Sunderland’s form on its head. Six goals in two games with Adam Johnson full of trickery and Steven Fletcher looking as deadly as ever. Having looked woefully impotent for goal threat back in October, the Black Cats have started 2013 creating chances, firing goals and climbing the table. With Swansea and Reading up next, suddenly we don’t need a double Gameweek to start taking notice of O’Neill’s attacking assets.

Mata’s fireworks are drowning Bales’s bombs
With Juan Mata and Steven Gerrard seemingly delivering points every Gameweek, Gareth Bale’s failure to profit from Sunday’s clash with United hit harder than ever. Let’s keep a perspective – it was United, hardly a gimme – but the Welshman is displaying a propensity to explode with points rather than keep pace with the more muted, reliable feed supplied by the likes of Gerrard, Mata and perhaps David Silva. Those fielding a five man midfield may well be able to keep patience but, in a 3-4-3 scenario, Bale’s place will start to look a luxury if he comes up short at Norwich and Mata and company maintain their consistency.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The reason I don't think he will is that Liverpool have Suarez as another great option...and possibly Sturridge as well.

Spurs don't have a striker of that same level of consistency so for the time being Bale offers the best bet of a mega haul, especially away from home.

If Defoe was scoring every week, or Ade when he's around, then yes, I'd definitely consider switching to Gerrard.

I think Silva is actually a bigger threat to Bale's power 5 status, with uncertainty around Man City's striking options.

Bale against Norwich away is a very good test of his ability to score well. Some of his biggest hauls have come against weaker teams away.

Arguably if he can't get points against Norwich away then it could be time to switch...Silva is my prime candidate.

Obviously I hope Bale goes on the rampage...makes my life much easier and vindicates the power of the power 5 once more.

Silva for me offers more security of starts and saves some money....but I agree Ageuro is a great pick....I may go for him again as the season progresses.

Last season I got him in for the last game of the season only...he saved City and me at the death....great player and always has a special place in my heart.

    Hey Peeps,

On my WC and having a play around with various combos.

Thinking Power 5 + RVP which leaves 2 cheap striker spots to rotate. Been having a look at fixtures, but for a bit of objectivity what changes would you make to the following beauty parade:

    1. Sturridge
    2. Fletcher
    3. Remy
    4. Lukaku
    5. Lambert
    6. Benteke
    7. Jones
    8. Berbatov
    9. Cisse
    10. Di Santo
    11. Pogrebnyak

I think Fletcher and Sturridge offers really good value.

Fletcher for the next few weeks then switch to Sturridge....their rotation is pretty good....I'm considering getting both as a power 5 and RVP owner.

Benteke is another I'd consider...not sure who he rotates well with. Anyone know?

They're not going to be playing Norwich every week, and in fact the next couple are tough fixtures. I think there's more potential elsewhere, and would hate to have a cheapie I had to leave rotting on my bench.

Plus Sturridge might be stretching my budget too far.

Hmm... I guess it's either Sturridge+Pog or Jones/Remy/Di Santo if I want to have both Azpilicueta AND Nastasic.

yeah, I'm going with Sturridge and Pogrebnyak.
No need for rotation and you get a decent defence (Zab, Gibbs, Azpi, Rafael, Demel is what I'm aiming for in the next few weeks)

yeh ageuro is a long term pick for u neways. yeh so far worked out well but caz needs to score a goal against west ham as technically im wasting two transfers taking out bale and then bringing him back in.

luckily apart from BA rest of my team is pretty set

Anyone considering a front line of:

    RVP - Sturridge - Remy

    ?

QPR/LIV fixtures for GWs 25 - 35 seem pretty good to me.

NOR, WBA, SWA, wig/sou, SUN, avl/sou, avl, WHU/WIG, rdg, STK

Struggling to fit Bale in which is annoying but other than that it seems a pretty sturdy team. Defense may need changing because of Rotation..

    Azpilicueta Clichy Rafael (Harte Demel)

    Fellaini Mata Michu Walcott (Puncheon)

Last night in the deadzone I started compiling a hopefully exhaustive budget defender list up to 5.0 with watchlist-style shorthand.

Feel free to add to it or correct it.

Should add two people already have suggested additions:
    4.0 SOU Shaw h
4.2 Fabio ?(Traore – wait and see)

If there's demand for it could put it online and update it periodically until the end of the January WC.

I was all set on Wilson, Davies and Demel but unfortunately Wilson looks set to return in late Feb (http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/Stoke-City-Wilson-closing-Potters-return/story-17863296-detail/story.html). There's also a scout tweet today I think with Pulis talking about the cold weather delaying his return.

I was also tempted by Clyne but can't touch Saints with a bargepole until I see what the new manager's made of!

          Genuinely tempted by

          DDG Fed
          Zabaleta Cameron Davies Wisdom Turner

          now.

            Interesting.

Surely if you're going to go with 4 cheapos at the back then you'd want 2 pairs of rotators?

            Cameron & Demel
            Davies & Reading 3.8?

Could then go DDG & Bunn in goal or something...

      Very good!

I'm retaining Mignolet and Shawcross, then going with Davies, Demel, Clyne and Harte and 3.9 keeper. Wilson will come in for Clyne when fit, to maintain the double Stoke option I have presently with Cameron (selling to acquire Fellaini back).

I see West Ham, Sunderland, Stoke and Swansea being decent options at the back as all are mid-tabl and half capable defensively. Then it's whether you want a heaby hitter or stay uber cheap!

If Fellaini does well tonight, I'm wildcarding! I have the exact money to get him in for Nolan, if I shuffle my defence. It might even make Nolan score vs Arsenal to put me in a quandry... 🙂

Seems a lot of people are on WC right now. Any cash cows you targetting?
Let me share mine and maybe it might helps

    1. Davies - already on 0.1 increase today and now is at 10%. Pretty good rate and most likely to get a double riser

    2. Sagna, Lukaku, Mignolet - I have these three, already on 0.1 increase. But their NTI is very slow (negative) and probably won't get more rise

    3. Suarez and Gibbs - Two players I owned before and already gained a 0.1 rise. Perform 'okay' so had some decent appeal. You guys reckon they will increase once more this week?

    4. Fletcher and Sturridge - Two strikers who are 'in' right now. High rate of transfers but still some way to go before a double riser, let alone a 0.1. Fletcher need 43,000 and Sturridge 37,000 transfer in. If the pace of transfer in keep going at this rate, they'll get that double riser but there are risks.

    5. de Guzman. Already on 90% and got decent rate of transfer. Will increase in a day or two and maybe have his double riser by the end of this GW.

What do you guys think? Agree/disagree?

You've got it covered there. Not convinced any of these will double rise again although I think Davies will go up another 0.1

I'd say Sturridge is the most likely.

He's on 30% and already got a 1000+ transfer in today.

IMO Casuals will only see his total points. He's been racking them up quite nicely lately and I predict we will see more transfer closer to matchday.

          Hopefully

True. And I've got most covered actually.

I'm just considering whether to get Guzman in (which means Punch out and lose his 0.3 value, but I'm planning to go with Power 5 anyways) and either Sturridge / Fletcher as my two strikers slot are filled up.

BTW I assume the Southampton v Everton game looks on? Not seeing any concern about it.

Since I'm playing Fellaini and benching Puncheon, I'm hoping Fellaini runs riot and turns the new manager into jelly. A Ramirez goal to spoil the Baines CS wouldn't be unwanted either... particularly as I only ever got 1 CS out of the b*stard 😉

It has been confirmed by the club to Sky, 100% On, no issues re pitch, and outside the ground has beed passed safe. Have seen footage that certainly confirms this.

On a wildcard, here is my team:

    Begovic
    Walker Baines Davies
    Walcott Fellaini Michu Bale
    Aguero Berbatov Cisse
    (Bunn Taarabt Mariappa Clyne)
    £1.4m in the bank

I'm worried by no Mata but otherwise pretty happy.

    Any thoughts?

Do you think i need to wildcard? Have used January wildcard already but have the regular one left.

    Currently...

    Jussi, bunn

    demel, gibbs, luiz, r.martin, harte

    mata, walcott, nolan, michu, puncheon

    Rvp, lambert, Ba.

    Would be...

    Bunn, Mignolet

    Rafael, Demel, Harte, Cameron, Davies

    Mata, Michu, Silva, Walcott, Fellaini,

    RVP, Sturridge, Pog.

    Do it?

Not sure i would wildcard to get that team. I prefer the first one, especially as the second has Pog and Silva. The defence in your original team is probably stronger too. i'd wildcard but maybe have another draft. Bunn's place could be under threat.

First year in guys so would appreciate an RMT on my first WC.

    Szczesny, (Henderson)
    Gibbs, Davies/Pearce, Demel/Cameron
    Mata, Bale, Fellaini, Michu (Puncheon)
    RVP, Aguero, Benteke

Have enough left to go Cameron > Willson and Benteke > Sturridge in a couple of weeks.

    Appreciate your thoughts.

It used to...in my second season I'd begin to notice that it really did that, made me a nightmare to be around if I had a bad week and I'd be overjoyed all week if I did well. I decided to address it and took a bit of a back seat...still changed my team, but only looked at it once a week and ignored my mini league (I was only in one back then) for a week or two....felt really good. Made me really appreciate that it is just a game.

There is a very real danger of it taking over your mood and life, like all obsessions/hobbies. Now I'm obviously still very in to it, but am able to deal with the bad weeks much better. I take it in my stride now and even laugh when it goes horribly wrong. When I took Tevez out this season just before his 19 pts it was a bit annoying, but actually quite funny.

hmm i think thats where we differ. im just a competitive son of a gun in general and hate losing in anything even if its a kickabout in the back garden lol.

think having roy keane as my idol is taking its affect lol.

last yr i lost my ML to my bro due to that ageuro goal in last minute. united lost title at same time too and my bro celebrated in my face.

        i will have my revenge!!!

Keano is a United legend - I have nothing but total respect for the man as a professional.
That's a tough break that it was Aguero's goal that cost you! I thought we had it wrapped up until he went and spoilt the party. Though, I had him captain and went up the rankings into the top 50...what a freak season that was!

Hope you get your revenge this season and celebrate in his face! haha

Individual bad weeks don't bother me too much but this season I suffered a very extended run of appalling scores, week after week and I let it get to me. I lost perspective and felt like it reflected on my intelligence or some such shite.

That was tragic so hopefully I've stopped doing that 🙂
