When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

What do we think of this lot? Feel free to (constructively!) criticise:

    Nastasic / Baines / Davies / Clyne / Pearce
    Mata / Bale / Walcott / Michu / Guthrie

    evening lads.

So, just been reading through all the comments after Demi's initial post on DGWs. I'd actually been thinking about this today as the matches were in progress. I hated the first 2 DGWs this year, simply because I ignored them to a degree and got punished. I went all in on the last one and was rewarded.

But i digress. I was thinking about how great it would be if at least 2 of United, City and Arsenal made the semi's. We'd have a massive DGW featuring teams with immense scoring power, and who knows who else might get thrown in. Plus for those like myself and Parmtree who still have our main wc to use the results could be insane.

I can't understand why more fans don't think this. Surely the reputation of the club is more important than keeping one, admitedly rather good, player?

Paisley / Shankly would have sacked him immediately

            No absolutely nothing.

            Besides...........

            Ronaldo hit a hat trick.
Messi is on a hat trick right now.
Brentford led Chelsea twice and Chelsea needed Torres to salvage a replay, 2-2.
Leeds beat Spurs to set up an away tie with MCFC in the 5th round. Bale assisted Dempsey.
Oldham, let by Paul Dickov, beat Liverpool at Boundary Park 3-2, with City loanee Wabara scoring the winner.
The 5th round draw also took place, with Arsenal, United and City all having great home ties.
Drogba joined (final details not announced yet) Galatasaray for a reported 9m in his pocket for 18months contract.

Im sure there were some other things go on, but not much.

          (Potential) DGW dilemma...

Ok, if we assume for a minute that Liv/Swa will have a blank GW27 and a DGW just after that, this is where it gets confusing...I already have Michu and Davies from the potential DGW

Does this mean its better to HAVE Sturridge in my WC team now (ready for the DGW) or better NOT to have given the blank? My alternative is Fletcher. If this blank / DGW goes ahead: next 4 are:

          Sturridge: ars mci WBA blank
          Fletcher: SWA rdg ARS wba

Fletcher's fixtures make him keepable before you go to Sturridge for a possible DGW. But as yet we have no guarantee we even have the DGW.

Anyone else shipping out J Cole and Ba without a WC? What exit route would you take? (2FTs)

            A: Bale and Pog
            B: AJ and Dzeko
            C: Pienarr and Fletcher

Or, I still have Luiz so maybe I could ship him out too for a hit and do something else? (Think I can just squeeze Rafa/Fellaini/Fletcher).

            Full team:
            Jussi, Bunn,
            Luiz, Gibbs, Demel, Shaw, Cameron
            Mata, Michu, Theo, Puncheon, COLE

The longer this GW goes on, the more I'm becoming a doubting thomas.

Sturridge seemed to do next to bugger all today
            Cameron has a tight hamstring
Suarez scored, but I can't afford him unless I mess the rest of my side up
Norwich have gone for another keeper, so currant Bunn may not be current any longer and instead backup.

            Honestly...

MF looks fine. GKs look a little weak if you consider that Bunn will lose his place soon. That means you're stuck with Feds week in week out. Get Hughes out. Cisse!!!!!
