When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

ok, so given I don't want Pool for the next 2 weeks anyway I think for now I'll stick with Aguero and Fletcher. if in 2 GWs Dzeko is still looking like a nailed on starter then i can consider an Aguero and Fletcher to Dzeko and Suarez move.

Schalke's general manager Horst Heldt is currently meeting Daniel Levy in London to put together the early transfer of Lewis Holtby to Spurs. This will probably be concluded tonight.

The midfielder had agreed to move to Tottenham in the summer, but should now leave in the winter break for a fee of around €1-2m.

Agree with PDM re Davies, Laudrup has got them in a nice tight unit so some Swans cover worth it. I've got Demel and to me he is quickly becoming bench fodder, may as well have a Reading player in their like Harte who at least stands a chance of doing something out of the ordinary.

Who do you guys think will start with Aguero? Tevez or Dzeko? I've predicted the right strikeforce most of the times before the games, but this week, it's really tough. Dzeko nicks it for me..

Dzeko. He scored plenty goals in the last few games isn't he?

Kinda harsh to drop him while being that in form, really. As soon as his form dips, Tevez will go back in to partner Kun me thinks

Didn't manage to score in the last game though, and we know Mancini is always ready to hunt players down. Just needs reasons to axe them. But the thing with Dzeko is, the talk about Tevez looking to leave Manchester City in the next year or so, Balo being.. Well.. Balo.. And Dzeko nicking in goals. Guess Dzeko's now the second-most preferred striker, but you never know with Mankini..

Just realized Dzeko didn't score the last 2 games while Tevez had some assists lately. I think the talk about Tevez leaving is kinda irrelevant at this point, Mancini is the type of manager who just field his best 11 whenever possible and don't mind benching even the good ones once his form dips (i.e Dzeko).

The more I think of it I can see Tevez Aguero partnership more from now on. Dzeko might get a last chance in this next game but seems unlikely.

Dzeko doing okay imo. Tevez notched in an assist against Fulham, so did Dzeko. Dzeko didn't score yesterday, neither did Tevez. So it all comes down to the league, been a while since Tevez has scored (Last goal was against Swans?) and Dzeko's quite on a run..

I think for now Dzeko, Mancini has said that whilst he is scoring goals he will stay in the team. Although he didn't score v Fulham or Stoke, he did claim an assist in both. IMO Aguero and Tevez are similar and Dzeko offers a different threat, But who knows with Bobby the rotator.

I'm watching this closely. atm I have have Aguero and Fletcher with a plan to dump Fletcher for Sturridge. But if Dzeko shows a hint of being nailed on I may switch to Dzeko and Suarez

Cheers JK, I'm actually on Dzeko right now, if he doesn't start, I'm getting Aguero in for a hit, with Luiz to Davies funding the move. If he starts though, I'd be tempted by Luiz to Zab instead.

if it weren't for the presence of Fletcher I might get Dzeko now. But I'm confident that Aguero is the most nailed on, and likely to have pens, and for me that just edges it. They have very similar ppg for what's it worth, but you can argue that Aguero has under-performed. We have also established why and it will be interesting to see if he has gotten over it yet. If he hasn't then Dzeko is definitely the man.

I owned Aguero during his 11-point hauls. And I have faith in his ability. Not exactly been under-performing, but yes, Mancini saved him for the CL quite alot, and didn't play him much in the league. We should be seeing full 90 minutes from Aguero soon in the league now..
