A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    So, turns out that Suarez was the best choice for a Liverpool Captain.

      Decide on what the score in Donetsk-Dortmund and PSG-Valencia will be.

      I think Galatasary is a good deal. They're not expensive, and Schalke is the weakest team in this stage. After that, Bayern has the best deal.

    a) Suarez Dzeko Guthrie Rafael
    b) Sturridge Aguero Guthire Evans
    c) Sturridge Dzeko Sissoko Rafael -4 point hit

    which one would you go for? If i go with c my front 8 will be:

    Mich Bale Walcott Mata Sissoko
    RVP Dzeko Sturridge

        that is the main concern, alternatively my front 8 could be

        Michu Bale Walcott Mata Guthrie
        RVP Aguero Sturridge

        However, Dzeko provides much better value for money and i think that outwieighs the potential of benching the ocasional point scoring player

        It's a typical guy which depends on the opposition. If the enemy's keeping Newcastle back, he's more like a central midfielder, not many shots, chance for an assits with through ball maybe. If the enemy's weaker, he can shoot some.

        I think he's quite a player, yet after the Spurs game, it seems as the Newcastle attack depends upon Goufran, with Sissoko and (perhaps someday) Cisse being the beneficiaries.

        Focal point of the Newcastle attack, playing centrally behind Cisse.

        Teams are getting wise to him already and giving him less space on the ball. Spurs handled him very well.

        How bad the DGW has been to me so far, look what it has made me do.

        Gw26: Aguero (9) -> Suarez (2) -7

        Gw27: Lambert (9) -> Sturridge (0) -9
        Bale (15) -> Gerarrd (0) -15
        Bench Puncheon (7) over Gerrard (0) -7
        Bench Turner (8) over Davies (1) -7
        Captain Suarez (1) over RVP (12) -11

        So all in all lost me about 50 or so points.

        Gone worse for anyone else?

        it seems we never learn. Bar those who had Gerrard for the Everton game last season Liverpool DGWs are invariably a titanic let down.

          All those Suarez owners taunting us Sturridge owners at 7pm have gone into hiding.

          Too busy preparing for his no show against Swansea, the blank and then his imminent suspension that's surely a few GWs away....

        Somebody explain to me why Lukakau is on the bench at WBA...it's criminal...Along with RVP he is just about the most dangerous genuine striker in the prem...frighteningly good....

          I don't know if he was great or Agger was shite, but the way he got past him was lovely to watch (as a footy fan, not as an L'pool fan).

          Some players are better coming off the bench. He's been ineffective in his last couple of games, probably needed a break. It worked.

            well yeah...his last start was a bit different though as he was subbed off after the spitting incident, up to that point he played well...

          At the risk of repeating myself, Steve Clarke is Satan. It beats me how he escapes the opprobrium usually reserved for Mancini and FSW. Get West Brom players at your peril.

          Just not sure I can waste a striker spot on him, with Messi, CR7, Ibra, RvP, Lewandowski, etc

          Your record with these is mixed

          Nocerino was a resounding success, Acerbi, not so much

        I blame Gerrard. If he scored Pool would be 1-0 up and force WBA to attack.

        Went from Gerrard 7+Suarez 10+ GJ 6 + BAPS

        to

        Gerrard 0+ Suarez 1+ GJ 1

        😆 Can't help but laugh.
