Back after a two-month hiatus, our thoughts turn to European action this midweek with many of us looking to quickly draw a line under last night’s events at Anfield. The Champions League affords us the perfect distraction and with the first leg of the last 16 just a few hours away, we reacquaint ourselves with its workings once again:

Scout League Standings

Obviously, at this stage we’re unable to have a look at each player’s new team, so for now we’re simply giving a shut out to the top five contenders in the Fantasy Football Scout league. In top spot sits Melonfresh – he accrued 427 points over the group stages, which is 25th spot in the overall standings and 32 points off the summit.

In second is Russ Kitson. He is just five points behind our Scout League leader and is in 39th position overall, with 422 points to his name so far. JDB is in third with 415 points, Tricky2006 makes fourth spot with 411 points, while we have a tie for fifth position, with Shindokung and Ion4ef both racking up 405 points after the opening six rounds.

Market Trends

As squads are reassembled, faith in Borussia Dortmund seems to be on the up. The Bundesliga outfit square up to Shakhtar Donetsk this time round and right across the classifications, they have received significant investment; Roman Weidenfeller has earned 8,000 new owners in goal, while Mats Hummels, Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have all picked up plenty more, with Reus the most popular Dortmund player since the last round of matches – over 17,000 have snapped him up.

Juventus have also proven popular ahead of their showdown with Glasgow Celtic. Gianluigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo have all acquired many new owners – Vidal’s classification as a defender, allied with his spot-kick duties, have made him the number one target heading into the knockouts, with over 27,000 picking up the Chilean international.

PSG are another team with many new backers. Salvatore Sirigu and Thiago Silva have earned over 10,000 extra owners in goal and defence respectively, while Jeremy Menez (8,000) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (12,000) have made their way onto radars prior to their double-header with Valencia.

Porto pair of matches with Malaga seems to have divided opinion, though. While the likes of keeper Helton (13,000) , midfielder Lucho Gonzalez (14,000) and forward Jackson Martinez (5,000) have been snapped up for the Portuguese side, Malaga trio Martin Demichelis (9,000), Eliseu (10,000) and Isco (7,000) have all proven popular picks.

Ones to Watch

With the first round of the last 16 taking place over four evenings, Fantasy managers need to factor in a little extra balance to their squads, as we are afforded the chance of changing captaincy from one night to the next – a similar scenario to the recent Euro 2012 tournament, where the “stick or twist” dilemma was a crucial aspect of the game. This tactic plays a major part in our selections:

Arturo Vidal comes into consideration as Juventus make their way to Celtic Park. With three goals, an assist and a couple of clean sheets already accrued, Vidal’s explosive armband capabilities were highlighted in Matchday 5 with a 15 point return against Chelsea. A clean sheet and the possibility of attacking points makes the Chilean a real bargain at 5.5.

With tomorrow’s Shakhtar v Dortmund tie looking too close to call, we turn to the Bernabeu for alternatives. A home clash with former club United hands centre stage to Cristiano Ronaldo and, having warmed up with a weekend hat-trick, he looks primed to produce as Jose Mourinho looks to take an advantage to Old Trafford in three weeks’ time.

We’re opting for a couple of options from next Tuesday’s matches as armband alternatives. Porto’s home form across the group stages was key to their qualification. The Portuguese side won all three matches in front of their own fans and they’ll fancy their chances of maintaining that run of form when Malaga roll up in a week’s time. With that in mind, Lucho Gonzalez gets the nod. The top scoring Fantasy midfielder thus far, the 6.5 priced Argentine has racked up 38 points and has scored or assisted in each of his last two home matches.

A home clash with in-form Bayern is far from straightforward but with just 3% ownership and a price tag of 8.0, Theo Walcott could prove a real differential option against the Bundesliga giants. Goals look likely in this one and if Walcott can replicate his recent domestic form, Arsenal could position themselves in the driving seat before a difficult return leg in the Allianz Arena.

While Galatasaray have opted to add a couple of big-name players to their ranks ahead of a head-to-head with Schalke, we’re choosing to overlook Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba and instead keep faith in their in-form front man Boruk Yilmaz. Less of a flair pick than either of the above, he’s been banging in the goals and, at 6.5, looks a strong captaincy option in the mid-price bracket, with Barcelona facing a tricky trip to AC Milan in the evening’s other match.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Madrid don't look too clever either. 16 points behind Barca doesn't exactly say solid at the back.

They are a one man band atm.

    Sirugu
    Vidal, J Evans, Alex, Hummels
    Reus, Feghouli, Walcott
    Messi, Burak Yilmaz, Huntelaar

Subs.: Helton; Lucho González, Otamendi, Kroos

    4.5 in bank

Is that a bit better? 🙂

Jesus, man, will you stop exaggerating!

Huntelaar will "probably" miss Saturday's league match against Mainz, and then a decision will be made next week about Schalke's Champions League game. It is *not* certain that he's going to miss the first leg. OK?

Theres BIG BIG BIG problems in the FPL strikers zone right now - big problems.
    CONSIDER THIS:

    Number of nailed-on-to-start forwards: 18
RVP, Rooney, Aguero, Defoe, Suarez, Sturridge, Jelavic, Cisse, Berbatov, Ruiz, Fletcher, Crouch, Holt, Lambert, Di Santo, Benteke, Weimann, Remy

Most sensible judges would rule out Di Santo and Weimann as realistic options, Defoe, Sturridge and Remy are currently injured and the form of Jelavic, Holt and Ruiz has been way to poor to consider - this leaves 10.

RVP + Rooney (few can afford both, rotation on the horizon with FA CUP / CL priorities)
    Aguero (inconsistent team, positional change)
    Suarez (inconsistent team, positional change)
    Cisse (poor form)
    Crouch (poor form)
    Fletcher (poor form)
    Berbatov (poor form)
Benteke (good value, but struggling side)
Lambert (good value, but struggling side)

OK - at the moment I'm sat with RVP, Suarez and Sturrudge.
But I have concern that as United's league lead extends, and fixtures pile up, we can see Welbeck & Chico leading the line in the PL and Rooney & RVP saved mainly for the cup games. I'm also not thrilled with doubling on the strikeforce of such an inconsistent side as Liverpool. But which of these options can I seriously consider?
Aguero - maybe, Cisse - punt, Lamber/Bentek - only for value

    And..... consider this.
If you remove RVP for a much lesser value player, ie. Sturridge money you save is going on a 5th mid and then on the defence.
Now, the 5th mid is fine - but it means that the Sturridge could end up on the bench for you and miss out on points.
And...... it has also been mentioned today that premium defenders are offering no value this season

    CONCLUSION:
    - RVP's consitent form has papered over the lack of premium strrking options available this season
    - United wins in the ties with Reading and Real removes him as a nailed on option and throws FPL into utter chaos

    Discuss.

Just have a strikeforce of RVP, Rooney, Hernandez and take the risk that Welbeck won't start too many games.

I say get Aguero and hope city make a decent run at United in the last few months. He has pens on his side, he's a class player and perhaps most importantly he's in a team that can potentially score 3-4 goals every week.

You know what. I no longer believe this.

You know how many times city have scored 3 or more in a game?

That isn't all that bad is it? Not sure how it compares to other teams though. But they do have the POTENTIAL to do it regularly. Surely they won't just tail off this season?

United have done it 13 times.

I think the opposite, City will tail off, especially if they have a cup run. Remember Chelsea last year.

Same current front three as me and (not surprisingly) I share a similar view. My conclussion to navigate this mindfield is to try and hold on to free transfers for all but essential moves. For me this will require sitting Suarez and Sturidge on the bench in gw27, but I can field an 11 so I feel its worth doing (also Wigan in GW28!)

I have the same front 3 too, thinking of doubling up with RVP Rooney and Sturridge, ManU's fixtures and lack of midfield option mean its a feasible double up.

Very interesting. Like you I have the RVP/Saurez/Sturridge front line this week, but with two frees I am considering going 3-5-2. With a mid of Cazorla/Mata/Fellaini/Michu, it's either...

      1. Sell Saurez to fund Bale as fifth mid,

      2. Keep Saurez, sell Sturridge for Le Fondre as first sub, get Sissoko as 5th mid, then have 2.5m to spend on Fellaini>Bale in due course. Not sure Fellaini is going to keep on doing it? 8 yellows is a worry too, as is Saurez, so not sure I want both. Sissoko looks value, and RVP/Saurez well you can't go wrong. But no City cover? Like the idea of Le Fondre super sub though!

      3. Sturridge>Dzeko, 1.3m in bank maybe Caz>Bale too?

I was hoping last night would lend some clarity, but it hasn't!!! Sissoko looks the man for me at 6.0m, not sure Fellaini is going to be worth keeping long term so am favouring option 2 just now as it gives me a decent team for next week. I had Tevez before Sturridge, and not sure I really want any City back at present? Sitting tight until the deadline though.

I am adopting a variation of your option 2, having already bought in Bale at the expense of Michu and am looking using my 2nd FT to do Puncheon>Sissoko. Fortunately I can bide my time with the Sturridge or Suarez dilemma and can play 11 with them on the bench in gw27, although I run the risk of loosing money fast as they (particularly Suarez) drops in value. FeeI feel the time to bin Feilaini is GW29 with the prospect of a blank. If City start kicking in the meantime then I will look at ways in to do Feilain>Silva after gw29

i adopt different tactics for knock out to group.
can get away with a risk in groups but think you need to spend big on forwards for knock out as thats where i think points will be gained. just my opinion though.
but i have never lost a UCL fantasy game

An interesting note for the game tonight:

Shakhtar have not played in a competitive game in over two months, but have won 10 of their 12 mid-season friendlies.

Could this be a positive (fresh players) or negative impact (not competitively sharp)?

Which is more deserving of a hit, in your opinion?

    A) Enrique (blank) -> Evans (qpr) - gives me 11th man
    B) Fellaini (nor) -> Bale (whu) - gives me Bale...

Or are both deserving of a hit?! Thanks. 🙂
