United slip out of the Champions League reckoning as Cristiano Ronaldo scores the crucial goal to secure Madridโ€™s progress. Hatem Ben Arfa could be afforded a run out in Newcastleโ€™s Europa League match with Anzhi, Kieran Gibbs is nearing a return to fitness, Adam Lallana should recover from a head knock sustained last weekend and Daniel Sturridge is expected to return for Liverpoolโ€™s home clash with Spurs on Sunday:

United 1 Real Madrid 2
Given the importance of last nightโ€™s game, Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s defensive selection was perhaps an indication of his first-choice back-four. Having returned to the side for last weekendโ€™s home win over Norwich, Jonny Evans dropped out, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic again the preferred partnership. Despite being lauded as a key member of the United starting XI only a matter of weeks ago by his manager, the Northern Ireland international has now started just one of the last four in all competitions and with one less trophy to play for, his owners will be concerned over his game time in the league, with even less rotation required amongst Fergusonโ€™s backline now.

The main talking point prior to kick-off was, of course, the omission of Wayne Rooney from the starting line-up. Ferguson, however, went to great lengths to explain his decision was down to Rooneyโ€™s lack of fitness after a recent sinus problem, with Danny Welbeck getting the nod due to a specific tactical game plan. The former Everton man had returned to the first XI in Saturdayโ€™s win over the Canaries but had played just 30 minutes in the previous two games โ€“ a significant factor in his managerโ€™s thinking, with Ferguson already on record as saying Rooney needs a run of games before reaching full fitness.

“It is one of these situations where we regard the qualities of Real Madrid with Xabi Alonso as controller of the team. Young Shinji Kagawa found it hard to do that defensive job in the first leg. Danny Welbeck is the best in our team at that, and that is the reason I have selected him. Wayne Rooney needs a game or two. He did well in the second half against Norwich, but he looked like he needed a game. He probably will come on in the second half and win the game for us!”

From a Fantasy perspective, Unitedโ€™s exit will also ease the likelihood of rest and rotation throughout the side as Ferguson looks to build on a 12 point gap over City in his bid to secure the title โ€“ the worry for Robin Van Persieโ€™s owners was that, if United progressed to the latter stages of the Champions League, the Dutchman would be rested during the league program. That scenario has now been eliminated with Ferguson now perhaps set to give Van Persie the platform to score the goals that will see him earn the Golden Boot in his first season at Old Trafford.

Last night’s result will hopefully speed up the rescheduling of Unitedโ€™s league trip to West Ham, which was due to take place this weekend but has been cancelled due to FA Cup commitments โ€“ with more free midweeks in their calendar, weโ€™ll hopefully soon learn of a new date, with many still crossing their fingers that the match could be moved to next midweek and stay within the confines of Gameweek 29.

In other news…
Alan Pardew could well be willing to hand Hatem Ben Arfa some part in Newcastle’s Europa League tie in Russia on Thursday. The Magpies face a first leg tie with Anzhi Makhachkala, with Ben Arfa now close to a return. The Frenchman has recovered from injury but is, according to Alan Pardew, some way short of match fitness…

“I think he has got a chance. We wanted to put some work into him. Heโ€™s a little bit short, so whether he gets 20 or 30 minutes towards the end of that game, I donโ€™t know. Thatโ€™s probably the most he could get. Weโ€™ll see how he shapes up. He worked all weekend โ€“ hopefully, weโ€™ll get him even closer.”

Ben Arfa’s return to the fray could prove significant for those considering Newcastle’s attacking assets in the coming weeks. While the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse look secure, they would surely benefit from Ben Arfa’s creative contribution from the flank. There is no suggestion that Sissoko will have his role, up in support of Cisse, changed when Ben Arfa is fit, having proved so effective in recent weeks. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea was the first time in five games that Sissoko has failed to return a goal or an assist since his arrival in England.

Arsene Wenger’s options look set to be boosted by the return to fitness of Kieran Gibbs according to reports. Gibbs is set for a return to full training and could be in the frame to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. Gibbs’ return would give Wenger a selection headache at left-back, with Nacho Monreal currently in the role. The Spaniard has impressed whilst Gibbs has been sidelined and it’s perhaps not cut-and-dry that the England man will make an immediate return to the Gunners lineup.

Southampton look set to be able to call on captain Adam Lallana for the trip to Norwich at the weekend. The midfielder returned to action against Newcastle a fortnight ago, after a two-month absence, only to be forced off after a clash of heads with Clint Hill against QPR on Saturday. Lallana’s recent return proved the catalyst for a shuffle in the Saints’ midfield, with both Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis dropped to the bench on Saturday to make way, as Gaston Ramirez and Jason Puncheon were recalled after being benched in the defeat to Newcastle. With Lallana set to be in contention, Mauricio Pochettino could well keep an unchanged starting lineup for the Carrow Road clash although Puncheon’s owners will still have some concern over his security of start given the teamsheet on the previous away trip.

Daniel Sturridgeโ€™s Fantasy owners will be relieved to hear the Liverpool forward is expected to be fit for Sundayโ€™s home clash with Tottenham. Having missed two of the last three matches due to a thigh complaint, Sturridgeโ€™s fitness has been a growing issue in recent weeks โ€“ despite his relatively kind price tag across the Fantasy games, the uncertainty over his game time means his appeal has taken a real dent. Over 52,000 FPL managers have already snapped up Luis Suarez after his hat-trick against Wigan on Saturday evening but the Uruguayan is likely to return to the support role this weekend, with Sturridge once again afforded the chance to lead the line โ€“ all the more crucial for his owners, given there are currently just six fixtures scheduled to take place. A move back to 4-2-3-1 from the weekend 4-3-3 looks the likeliest scenario, with Philippe Coutinho and Stewart Downing retaining their places on the flanks on either side of Suarez. Although Sturridge is set to return to training today, Brendan Rodgers looks set to be without Martin Skrtel again โ€“ the centre-half remains sidelined with a knee problem.

Its a mixture isn't it? He's certainly got the mentality and previous for a bit of petulance. I don't think it was a sending off, but I can't argue it because there is undoubtably some grey area caused by the fact he is a total prat.

      That's silly.
Nani was very good, dangerous for Madrid's defence, and perfect for the strategy which was working and winning the game.
He also set up the goal.
You can't now rationalise the poor refereeing decision, by saying he deserved it. It was a poor and incorrect decision.

I'm not saying he deserved it, I'm saying he makes it hard to completely rule out his actions as dangerous once he knew he was in a collision. He stayed down for a long time, maybe he knew he'd maybe pushed it a bit far in the heat of the moment. I wouldn't have sent him off, but I think its possible that other refs may have.

    BEGO
    DAVIES / DAWSON / OLSSON
    SISSOKO/ BALE/ PUNCHEON
    LAMBERT
the following have no game, TURNBULL / AZPI / BERTRAND / RVP / ROONEY

I can field 10 players (team linked) assuming Federici is fit to play. Is it worth saving my FT for DGW news? I was going to change MATA for SISSOKO but missed price rise and as rival has him it's not really worth it.

Anyone else think that Mourinho's desperate arse-licking "the best team lost" was counterproductive for his dreams of taking the United reins?

The one thing United can count on from Fergie is absolute, 100% loyalty to his team and players. Evidence and reason don't enter into that. He never, ever says anything more positive about an opponent than he says about United.

I don't think he meant his team should have lost. At that level managers and players know that the best team doesn't always win. And with players like Ronaldo and Madrid front 3, they don't have to be the better team (which mourinho knows as he is big on the counter attack)

Mourinho expected his team to play better than they did against UTD, after their two wins against Barcelona. I think if anything it will get them playing at a higher level to meet his expectations.

I think he gave his honest opinion which also happened to be very controversial and Mourinho-like. He probably acknowledged the victory was a little hollow but ultimately saw an opportunity to make headlines.

It seemed like more than just headlines - it seemed like trying to ingratiate himself with United.

But I can't see SAF or any of the the United bigwigs respecting that kind of behaviour. They certainly wouldn't tolerate him doing it against them if he were manager.

RVP has scored just 1 goal since Rooney came back from injury. Even before then his PPG is noted to dip when he plays with Rooney. The price difference is not justified. He is a more reliable captain, and may score more than Rooney, but i don't think the extra funds is worth it with DGW madness approaching.

You don't ever take out the highest scoring player in fpl.

I know he's had a dip but that is the exception to the rule and is the reason you should have him. Also in a bizzare twist roo is clearly more injury probe this season. It's no good having a player who score 19 then misses the next two games. Consistency is key and that's what RVP give you.

        That is all.

Giggs, for a 39 year old, was absolutely out of this world last night.

Welbeck and Cleverley came of age and really showed they can mix it at the top level. Bodes very well for the future when the likes of Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones and De Gea are also thrown into the mix.

Defence was excellent and well drilled, the tactical plan was working perfectly.

Then came the red card.....and everything changed.

      Gutted.

I can, but ideally I want Pog replacement as bench fodder most weeks. £5.7m isn't that, imo, and it eats up my funds so i have no flexibility for future weeks. It's a tricky one.....

I have this dilemma and I'm gonna stick and save my points hits for the doubles.

Reme has to score just to get even. He then has to score again to make a 'profit'. Then you'll want to take him out to pog or someone similar which means you've cancelled out whatever profit he makes anyway.

Just have a gap this week IMO. Make it up in the doubles. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

Tbh i see Remy as a bit of a knee-jerk. QPR will be set up defensively and Remy will be relied upon to grab what he can on the counter. Benteke is a proven beast with a high involvement in Villa goals. Saying QPR do have nice remaining fixtures.

+1 They lost. It could have been a yellow, but it was dangerous so it wasn't clear cut.

No shame about going out, Man U played well.

It's not the first (perceived) injustice in the history of football.

I wouldn't have entered a dialogue that i couldn't possibly win due to coming across as a bitter, blinkered fanboy.
And that Shakespeare comment? Wit of Wildean proportions there.

Speaking of dialogues that couldn't possibly be won, what about this one you have started....when you don't even know me? Surely it would've been easier for you to ignore my first post if you have had enough of this type of thing rather than jump on it and criticise (you and others I might add).

My initial comment was raising a fact about the referee, for discussion if people wanted. Now please explain how that makes be a bitter, blinkered fanboy.

For the record, I thought the red was very harsh, but sh*t happens and the match was lost.

I think it's pretty obvious what happened. But there's nothing we can do about it and people on here will start to get annoyed we the issue is pressed anymore.

My current team for this GW:

        Mignolet (Federici)

        Davies Harte (Evra/Zabaleta/Demel)
        Puncheon, Bale, Henderson (Mata, Walcott)
        Suarez, Lambert (Ruiz)

Plan is to do Mata and Ruiz to Michu & Benteke (-4). don't really want to take hit for a defender.
