United slip out of the Champions League reckoning as Cristiano Ronaldo scores the crucial goal to secure Madrid’s progress. Hatem Ben Arfa could be afforded a run out in Newcastle’s Europa League match with Anzhi, Kieran Gibbs is nearing a return to fitness, Adam Lallana should recover from a head knock sustained last weekend and Daniel Sturridge is expected to return for Liverpool’s home clash with Spurs on Sunday:

United 1 Real Madrid 2
Given the importance of last night’s game, Sir Alex Ferguson’s defensive selection was perhaps an indication of his first-choice back-four. Having returned to the side for last weekend’s home win over Norwich, Jonny Evans dropped out, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic again the preferred partnership. Despite being lauded as a key member of the United starting XI only a matter of weeks ago by his manager, the Northern Ireland international has now started just one of the last four in all competitions and with one less trophy to play for, his owners will be concerned over his game time in the league, with even less rotation required amongst Ferguson’s backline now.

The main talking point prior to kick-off was, of course, the omission of Wayne Rooney from the starting line-up. Ferguson, however, went to great lengths to explain his decision was down to Rooney’s lack of fitness after a recent sinus problem, with Danny Welbeck getting the nod due to a specific tactical game plan. The former Everton man had returned to the first XI in Saturday’s win over the Canaries but had played just 30 minutes in the previous two games – a significant factor in his manager’s thinking, with Ferguson already on record as saying Rooney needs a run of games before reaching full fitness.

“It is one of these situations where we regard the qualities of Real Madrid with Xabi Alonso as controller of the team. Young Shinji Kagawa found it hard to do that defensive job in the first leg. Danny Welbeck is the best in our team at that, and that is the reason I have selected him. Wayne Rooney needs a game or two. He did well in the second half against Norwich, but he looked like he needed a game. He probably will come on in the second half and win the game for us!”

From a Fantasy perspective, United’s exit will also ease the likelihood of rest and rotation throughout the side as Ferguson looks to build on a 12 point gap over City in his bid to secure the title – the worry for Robin Van Persie’s owners was that, if United progressed to the latter stages of the Champions League, the Dutchman would be rested during the league program. That scenario has now been eliminated with Ferguson now perhaps set to give Van Persie the platform to score the goals that will see him earn the Golden Boot in his first season at Old Trafford.

Last night’s result will hopefully speed up the rescheduling of United’s league trip to West Ham, which was due to take place this weekend but has been cancelled due to FA Cup commitments – with more free midweeks in their calendar, we’ll hopefully soon learn of a new date, with many still crossing their fingers that the match could be moved to next midweek and stay within the confines of Gameweek 29.

In other news…
Alan Pardew could well be willing to hand Hatem Ben Arfa some part in Newcastle’s Europa League tie in Russia on Thursday. The Magpies face a first leg tie with Anzhi Makhachkala, with Ben Arfa now close to a return. The Frenchman has recovered from injury but is, according to Alan Pardew, some way short of match fitness…

“I think he has got a chance. We wanted to put some work into him. He’s a little bit short, so whether he gets 20 or 30 minutes towards the end of that game, I don’t know. That’s probably the most he could get. We’ll see how he shapes up. He worked all weekend – hopefully, we’ll get him even closer.”

Ben Arfa’s return to the fray could prove significant for those considering Newcastle’s attacking assets in the coming weeks. While the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse look secure, they would surely benefit from Ben Arfa’s creative contribution from the flank. There is no suggestion that Sissoko will have his role, up in support of Cisse, changed when Ben Arfa is fit, having proved so effective in recent weeks. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea was the first time in five games that Sissoko has failed to return a goal or an assist since his arrival in England.

Arsene Wenger’s options look set to be boosted by the return to fitness of Kieran Gibbs according to reports. Gibbs is set for a return to full training and could be in the frame to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. Gibbs’ return would give Wenger a selection headache at left-back, with Nacho Monreal currently in the role. The Spaniard has impressed whilst Gibbs has been sidelined and it’s perhaps not cut-and-dry that the England man will make an immediate return to the Gunners lineup.

Southampton look set to be able to call on captain Adam Lallana for the trip to Norwich at the weekend. The midfielder returned to action against Newcastle a fortnight ago, after a two-month absence, only to be forced off after a clash of heads with Clint Hill against QPR on Saturday. Lallana’s recent return proved the catalyst for a shuffle in the Saints’ midfield, with both Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis dropped to the bench on Saturday to make way, as Gaston Ramirez and Jason Puncheon were recalled after being benched in the defeat to Newcastle. With Lallana set to be in contention, Mauricio Pochettino could well keep an unchanged starting lineup for the Carrow Road clash although Puncheon’s owners will still have some concern over his security of start given the teamsheet on the previous away trip.

Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy owners will be relieved to hear the Liverpool forward is expected to be fit for Sunday’s home clash with Tottenham. Having missed two of the last three matches due to a thigh complaint, Sturridge’s fitness has been a growing issue in recent weeks – despite his relatively kind price tag across the Fantasy games, the uncertainty over his game time means his appeal has taken a real dent. Over 52,000 FPL managers have already snapped up Luis Suarez after his hat-trick against Wigan on Saturday evening but the Uruguayan is likely to return to the support role this weekend, with Sturridge once again afforded the chance to lead the line – all the more crucial for his owners, given there are currently just six fixtures scheduled to take place. A move back to 4-2-3-1 from the weekend 4-3-3 looks the likeliest scenario, with Philippe Coutinho and Stewart Downing retaining their places on the flanks on either side of Suarez. Although Sturridge is set to return to training today, Brendan Rodgers looks set to be without Martin Skrtel again – the centre-half remains sidelined with a knee problem.

Stuck bottom of previous page. Your opinions will be much appreciated.

    Migs
    Harte Wilson GJ Clyne
    Michu Bale Gaston
    Studge

xx Evans Aguero RVP Mata Walcott

    2FT’s

Aguero + Mata -> Sissoko + Suarez is the smart and simple thing to do.

But Suarez has an alright fixture this gw, i don’t think he will go mental. Go safe with the choice above or gamble on Beneteke/Cisse with another midfielder?

I have Sturridge and I've decided against getting Suarez. Doubling up on Liverpool attack against Spurs, is not a good idea.

I was in exactly the same position but I took the opposite course of action. Not only are the fixtures good after week 29 (as LR mentions), but it will give me a chance to assess how SAS line up and play together. One of them will be out for Mr. VP.

Also Suarez is capable of ripping any defence apart I would look at his form rather than fixture.

I watched some highlights of the EVE/Reading game. Jeez....reading could have lost 10-0. They are kek. Keep eye on Federici's fitness.

Another thing...Felliani could have scored 5.

Nani was down longer than Arbeloa, it was careless but if you look at the rules regarding misconduct, it was only worth a yellow. Basically it was dangerous and careless but not intentional.

    Which is the best option:

    A) Baines & Fellaini out ---> Samba & Sissoko in (-4pts)

Then either hope Persie drops 0.1m next week than I can afford him with my FT, or take a 4pt next week to get Persie.

    B) Baines ---> Wilson

Then I can afford Persie next week with my FT with no hits taken and get to keep Fellaini.

    Thanks

Who wants to have a go at second guessing Alex Ferguson?

Specifically, do we now assume that Evans is benched, or was he just rotated out for the big one and should be back to being a regular fixture in the United back 4?

If he's going to be out then I can get rid for free and field 11 this gw. If he's going to be continuing the run of clean sheets along with a dgw at some point, I'd want to hold on to him.

Not really 'for shame'. It's all part of football banter. You are a massively successful club and due to that you're going to get a lot of stick when you balls it up, which due to your being a 'massively successful club 'you're not going to get that often. Crying like little pussies and getting all high-and-mighty isn't gonna make people stop, they're gonna go further as you take yourself too seriously.

So in conclusion, deal with it. Every club gets it but the most sucessful get it the most, which in an ironic sense suggests the fact you're being mocked proves you're sucessful. 'Always hated, never ignored' and all that jazz. Man Utd and Liverpool will always get stick 'cos in reality we all admire them for being the two most sucessful clubs in England and not needing an oil baron to do it.

I do love seeing old red face fuming though. Like a fine wine/whine.

By the way, not sure if you're aware but you can rearrange the order of the columns - I only mention it because it looks like you've left it in the default order (may be deliberate 🙂 )

If it's of interest when I built my report I chose big chances and shots in box as they had the highest correlation coefficient for goals conceded of all the stats I looked at. (I didn't look at penalties conceded but that would be very high, obviously) I looked at all matches up until last week and the following came out:

              Big Chances Conceded 0.535897726
              Attempts In Box 0.463243102
              Chances Conceded Right Flank 0.301430243
              Chances Conceded Centre 0.281827542
              Defensive Errors 0.273168174
              Chances Conceded Left Flank 0.249190882
              Attempts Out of Box 0.151714911
              Set Play Shots Conceded 0.128189136
              Challenges Lost 0.126410081

I deffinatly think Nani was never a red card. However when you watch the replays he does seem to kick out at Arbeloa in mid air.

I don’t know if this is was natural motion or he actually kicked and the ref may have spotted that.

    What do you guys think?

I would have give a yellow, but I don't think anyonbe can really argue with the red.

One of the arguments is that Nani wasn't looking in that direction and was only looking at the ball. Surely that makes things worse? Flying up with your foot that high while not looking what's around?

It was a red in my opinion. Nani foolishly put himself in the position where he could be sent off. When you're breaking away down the field, there's no reason why he shouldn't quickly check what's in front of him. Like Keane said last night, he can't expect to have the while field to himself so sticking your studs up without checking who's around him is reckless and dangerous. Ref got it right.

@LR Honestly think playing safe with the popular options is the way to go. The odd differential is good but most of the teams around you will have the likes of Suarez. Tempting to be clever and try to catch up ground on the leaders but best to do this nearer the end of the season for me.

*look at Forca, trying to be clever isn't working out for him lately.

Hey Doos, where do you stand on Stan? Do you long for the ball-on-the-deck gor blimey guvnor football of Devonshire and Brooking? Or is Prem survival reward enough?

i thought and couple of my friends thought that Nanis challenge was never a red card yesterday. but after watching the replays today it clearly seems to be a red card, not a yellow as suggested by many, but a red. the color of the car is red

why did nani stop playing if it wasn't a red? you'd think he knows what color the card was!

      'clearly' ?

It clearly is a yellow and a free kick. I've seen it about 40 times at different speeds. Easy yellow - nowhere near a red

Still amused with the whole "Nani was unfairly sent off" comments. All made by either Portuguese, or United fans. He is such a bonehead player - reminds me of when he negated a Ronaldo wondergoal for Portugal. He must not have seen that the ball was already in the net when he decided to run onto it from an offside position. Complete idiot.

Nani wants to be considered the best in the world - Balotelli really believes he can be. Balotelli the reason for City failure this year? Definitely took some attention away from the obvious problems going on.

You can say the same about most large clubs, Madrid in particular. In Spain, most fans either support Real or Barca.
