The summer departure of Didier Drogba looked tailor-made for Romelu Lukaku to barge his way past Fernando Torres in the Chelsea pecking order and justify the club’s decision to splash out £10m for his services in August 2011. It didn’t quite transpire like that, though. In spite of a lack of forward options, Roberto Di Matteo shipped Lukaku off on a season-long loan to West Brom and kept faith in the misfiring Spaniard in a move that played some part in his subsequent downfall.

Handed just two starts in the opening 10 Gameweeks by Steve Clarke, Lukaku’s Fantasy prospects looked initially bleak, with the Baggies boss tending to afford him minutes from the bench late on as first-choice forward Shane Long started to tire. Indeed, it wasn’t until Gameweeks 18-19 that Lukaku finally earned two consecutive starts for his new club – a decision which, when you analyse the statistics, seems as baffling as Di Matteo’s decision to send him to the midlands in the first place.

Lukaku has started 12 games for West Brom, with 13 of his 25 appearances coming from the bench. Focussing on his first XI performances, he has returned nine goals, two assists and 14 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points over those 12 matches – a highly impressive 6.3 points per start. Such has been his level of consistency, Lukaku has either scored, assisted or returned bonus points in 11 of those 12 fixtures; the only blank coming in Gameweek 25 when he was sacrificed just after half-time as the Baggies were reduced to 10 men at home to Spurs.

Bearing in mind he has now started eight of the last 10 when available (he was ineligible to face his parent club last weekend), Lukaku seems to have edged ahead of Long as Clarke’s preferred forward. Although there remain slight concerns over Clarke’s propensity to rotate his front men in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Long’s lack of form certainly helps the Belgian’s cause – the former has failed to produce any returns in each of his last eight starts and has registered a single goal from Gameweek 14 onwards. With his side now past the magic 40 point safety mark, Clarke even shifted to a 4-4-2 in the previous home game – Lukaku duly obliged with a brace and maximum bonus, returning his highest haul of the season.

Up next for the Baggies is a home clash with Swansea this weekend before a couple of road trips take them to Stoke and West Ham – the type of bruising encounters Lukaku is likely to thrive upon. After the Upton Park encounter, Clarke’s side then face home clashes against Arsenal, Newcastle and Wigan in the following five, in addition to a trip to Southampton; certainly, the schedule looks enticing for those eyeing up the 6.5 priced FPL forward.

With the likes of James Morrison also struggling to replicate his early season form, Lukaku seems the one Baggies player we can rely upon to produce the points on a regular basis. Granted, there are other forwards in the mid-price range who look equally appealing, with Rickie Lambert and Christian Benteke the stand out alternatives, but Lukaku’s outstanding consistency may just well seal the deal for some.

Team for this week, fielding 10, -4. Any other moves you would make?

    Bunn (Szczesny)
    Samba Davies Shaw (Evans Luiz)
    Michu Sissoko Bale(C) (Walcott Fellaini)
    Suarez(vc) Sturridge Lambert

      10 for -4 is great work. I'm fielding 9 for -8!!

It's going to fall massively on the captain call this week. That's why I'm risking it on Lukaku. I'd suggest you risk it also 🙂

10 is good, and I'd be tempted to keep the FT as we're going to need them over the next weeks.

But a Newcy defender for Evans would tempt me

Think I've made my mind up to play 9 this week, and save the transfer to get Dzeko out and Fellaini back next week as fifth mid in a 3-5-2.

Not convinced anyone is worth a transfer and a 4 point hit next week for the sake of getting 10 out and selling Dzeko?

      Im playing 2-4-3

No point taking a hit for a defender
I reckon most will have between 7-10 anyway
Most casuals/ghost ships will have 5 or 6 tops

It's tricky, the only player I don't want is Dzeko, and I will replace with Anichebe for the bench but he's not playing either! Pog would have done a job to get 10 out, but he's banned. So will sit tight in case of injuries in the FA cup then have two frees for next week. 9 out hit free should be ok.

I got Wilson in for Demel for 4pts. The way I see it, Wilson could get me back 1 or 2 of those points just by playing, it has the added benefit of getting Demel out of my team after being there all season and frees up a way for me to change Bego > DDG/Cech as I don't see the need for such pricey Stoke defensive cover. Also I can double up on Stoke defence next week anyway.

It was a big win for me for a maximum deficit of 4pts. No brainer.

I moved on Shawy at 6.0m for the 0.5m profit, and got Wilson at 3.9m . Would never have thought I'd be using a transfer to sell Shawcross, but for the saving and profit it had to be done before he was down to 5.6/5.7m!

I have 5.2 to spend. Would you take anyone else at that price who plays this gw? He currently looks the best bet to me...

Wow, didn't realise how cheap he'd become to be honest. Agree the options look limited with Kebe doubtful.

I have BenTekkers as captain and am very happy with that. How many goals per game to Reading ship?

my keepers are De Gea and Fed......worth getting rid of Fed for Bunn for free or is it a waste of a transfer and should just go with no keeper?

    Musing on the Rooney-out gossip..........
initial reaction is its just silly speculation because left out of madrid match, but there are issues going on here that need to be addressed:

    1. imagine 5 years ago someone saying that united would leave rooney out in favour of another player because of his energy and work-rate being better than rooney.... - impossible, but now true
    2. RVP has shown what a "marquee" player should do for your team, esp. if they are getting £200k a week, rooney not been poor really, but not playing at correct level / pay grade
    3. persistant injuries cropping up more at 27 years old and with the kind of physique that isnt naturally agile it could get worse
    4. is he TOO calm now? - it seems mad, but he's the kind of player that plays better when riled up and aggressive, 1-2 red cards a season is worth it for consistently more explosive performances
    5. the fact remains that in the biggest game of the season the team played better without him = worry

Ferguson is ruthless when selling players at the right time.
      Beckham, Ince, Kanchelkis, Hughes etc.
It would not surprise me if rooney was sold.

Shane Long is not fully fit. This piece of news just enhances my conviction that Lukaku can get me fantasy points. But , I am still wary of Benteke.
