Reading have this afternoon announced the departure of Brian McDermott following the 2-1 home defeat to Villa at the weekend. Reading have issued a statement on their site, in which they emphasise their keenness to appoint a replacement with some haste…

“The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new Manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation.”

Reading face a daunting trip to Man United this weekend and it remains to be seen if Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has a name lined up to take control in time for that particular visit. Paulo Di Canio and Nigel Adkins are two names currently occupying the bookies thinking.

While McDermott’s departure is perhaps harsh on a manager who gained them promotion and has battled this term with limited resources, Fantasy Managers will be quick to move on and we must now consider that Reading’s starting XI will be in flux from this point. McDermott had appeared to have settled on his preferred lineup and, until recently, had employed a 4-5-1 system with some regularity.

An upturn in fortunes will be anticipated, such is the expected effect of a new manager’s arrival and it’s also likely that we’ll see a shake-up in personnel. The back four, recognised as the worst in the Premier League on current form, is surely likely to see changes.

We may now see the likes of Sean Morrison, Danny Guthrie and Adam Le Fondre earn regular starts under a new regime and, with the potential for improved results, there could yet be value available in the Royals’ squad over the remaining Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Only 9 free transfers remaining and possibly 2-4 DGWs...

    Use them wisely!

    Hey guys,

I sacrificed Suarez a couple of weeks ago for the power 5 midfield, but now this is killing me as all my rivals have him. I'm 3 and 16 points ahead in my mini league so it's all there for the taking.

    A. Michu, Sturridge > Townsend, Suarez (I have exactely the money to do that) -4p
    or
    B. save the transfer (and hope that Sturridge explodes)

    What should I do?

Does where you are in your ML come into play with the RVP Vs Rooney debate?

I can afford to bring in either but I am 40 points behind my ML leader who has RVP.

Not sure if its better to get RVP to stay in touch or Rooney to punt on closing the gap

    Thanks

    Need more opinions,

Norwich haven't been that good defensively on the road, having just one clean sheet all season. Keeping in mind Sessegnon has scored the 2 out of the last 3 for Sunderland, do I play him over Lukaku? Who's away at Stoke? Thoughts?

    Imagine this...

it's five games into the season.

    Rooney's last 5 scores are 13, 8, 2, 1, 14. A total of 38 points 5 games.

That is 7.6 points per game.

He has scored 4 goals and has 2 assists.

    RVP's last 5 scores are 2, 5, 12, 4, 5. A total of 28 points in 5 games.

That is 5.6 points per game.

He has scored 1 goal and has 3 assists.

Rooney is 11.9m and RVP is 13.7m

Which one is the no brainer choice?

this will be just like the suarez vs sturridge debate. sturridge is heavily outscored by suarez and rooney will be outscored by RVP. value is nothing at this stage of the season. it's the points that matters.

And why is form limited to 5 GW's? Because it was 9-0 to RVP the week before?

Also the last 2 weeks have been different due to the build-up to the Real games. Now the CL's over, RVP will be back to 90 mins every week.

The RVP v Rooney debate has cropped up every time Rooney has outscored him this season. Shortly after RVP would go and outscore him. They are quality players and should both score well, just not necessarily the same weeks. Sticking with RVP - plays as the main striker, has penalties and starts more games.

You can't look at the last few weeks. The CL has cast a large shadow over their selections.

RVP will outscore Rooney when they play together simply because he plays further forward, takes pens and corners. The only justification for choosing Rooney is the price.

Yes Rooney does take them, but RVP has taken double the number and also delivers more deadballs from around the box. They're relevant because United have been the best at converting corners in the league all season.

    Sturridge, Suarez, Lambert

    £4.2million in the bank.

This is a scenario where I think Rooney is a better choice. You'd be able to afford Remy, which I guess would give you a benching dilemma but I think with potential future blanks you want a strong front 8 and Remy should outscore Anichebe by more than RVP will Rooney IMO.

I suppose so, but I like having a strong front 8, somebody will usually draw a blank and you just have to smart/lucky/gutsy enough to pick the right one. I would also prefer downgrading one of your midfielders to Maloney to just having a pit of nothingness like a Reading forward/Anichebe. Although I guess if Anichebe gets minutes he's a decent option.

if chelsea go out of europa league on thursday they can play the replay in a midweek, most likely 2-3 april.

If they stay in the europa, then the fixture list is very tight up until the semi final fixtures. They won't be able to play midweek and there is an international weekend coming. The only real time they could fit it in is gw 31 where utd and chelsea games in the prem would therefore be postponed to later date.
