While I’ve been providing some informal updates on HomeCrowd (our new comments system), I thought it was about time I provided an official update on developments.

We’ve been testing the new comments system behind the scene for a couple of weeks, using it to discuss Scout Picks and other site matters. With a few more tweaks to come, this weekend we should be at the point to allow a number of community members to get access and help us move that testing on.

Ed is worked today on adding inline admin tools (to allow the moderation of comments in the list view rather than via the admin panel) and completed the recent comments widget to mirror the current version. Once these are in place, we’ll be looking for a small group of community members to help offer their assistance.

Testers will see a very similar look and feel to the present system, which is intentional of course, with the notable addition of comment voting, stickies and fixed elements like email notification of replies to comments.

For testing purposes, we will be displaying the comment rating and discussion rating that votes creates – in basic terms, the reputation of a user is added to the comment rating when a vote is cast (or subtracted if it’s a downvote). Discussion ratings are the sum of the comment rating and its replies. We’ll be hiding both numbers when we go live, although we may represent comment rating graphically and users will be able to sort comments by discussion rating in order to view the very best discussions for a given article.

There are new features to be added after this phase of testing, notable profile pages for recalling user comments and replies, the follow function to allow you to filter threads for comments made by your favourite posters and the full sticky comment feature that will list recent stickied comments as “Hot Topics” in the sidebar for easy retrieval alongside the recent comments widget.

These are all features that will be applied and tested in the coming weeks, by which time we will have hopefully got the basics of the system tested and ready for rollout to the live site – with your help.

I’ll be posting details of how you can volunteer to help test HomeCrowd on Friday, in time to let some users loose on the test servers at some point this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hehe...well it means we can delete or unapprove comments in seconds and take all replies with them. A lot easier than the current system.

Mark, while you're here, I've been having an issue with staying logged in to the site. Each time I come on the site I'm having to log in despite the 'remember me' box being ticked. Do you have any idea what's causing this? I know a few others on the site had this issue a while ago. I emailed a week or so ago but haven't heard anything.

Ah. This just started happening? Basically you need to check that cookies are being stored and also, if you're logged in to members, try logging out when you're not using the members area and see if that makes a difference. I didn't see your mail so drop me another one and I'll get Ed to fire you a few questions on it.

It started happening a while ago but I tolerated it for a period before it started becoming an irritation so only recently emailed.

Just resent the email, support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk is the correct address isn't it?

It started happening at the same time on both my laptop and iPhone so I don't think its an issue with cookies.

I've had the same issue for as long as I can remember. My cookie settings are all fine and I don't have a problem with other sites. The login box remembers my name and password so all I have to do is hit the login button... the remember me box is unticked and it doesn't matter whether I tick and log in or leave it unticked the result is the same.

Yeah, same for me. Its more of a nuisance when using the site on my phone since that doesn't keep the username and password. Get a bit tiring when if I have to log in 2-3 times on the phone and I may be commuting with patchy signal. Especially if just after I log in Safari has one of its random crashes and I have to do it again 🙂

I've had exactly the same thing for a month or so. I don't usually log out of the members area so maybe that's the problem.

I've also had a problem with refreshing the pages recently. Hitting F5 used to take me back to the comment I was reading but now it takes me back to the top of the page. It's a bit annoying if I was reading something at the bottom of a page and have to scroll all the way down again.
To get around it I started clicking on the hashtag mark and that returns me to that comment when I hit F5 now.

In my experience the site takes you to your last comment when refreshing. If you haven't commented on the page it takes you to the top.

Yeah, the hashtag works and of course allows you to bookmark comments.

Ah, not having commented on a page takes you to the top. I didn't realise that. I was reading an interesting discussion about the Arsenal defence the other day and kept having to scroll all the way back down to see the latest comments. Cheers M.

    Hi guys,

I am debating on whether I play my wildcard or save to for an upcoming double game week.

I definitely want to get rid of:
    Bunn
    Szczesny
    Mariappa
    Davies
    Baker
    Dawson
    Michu
    Hoillett

    And thinking hard about shifting:
    Mata
    RVP
    Lambert

I am chasing an 82 point deficit in my mini league and I am worried I will not get the benefit if I save it for a DGW, therefore do I:
    A: Play it
    B: Save it
    Thanks in advance!

So, I am into the final 256 of the FPL cup, pretty lucky so far.

This week I’m thinking about doing:

Michu + Sissoko -> Cazorla and Townsend

It would solve the benching problems I have each week, also Cazorla has 4 games compared to Michu’s 2 so is bound to outscore him.

    Any thoughts?

Feel free to look at my tie and give me some advice about how I can make the final 128!

Michu - Caz is an obvious good move, but can you keep Siss and downgrade someone else to raise cash? Perhaps Zab for a cheapie or RVP to Rooney to match your oppo? Your oppo has more weaknesses than you in any event imo.

Last 256 is good work! Concentrate on the cup if you can!

I'm actually looking for a way to improve my defence rather than downgrade it so not sure I'll get rid of Zab, RVP -> Rooney definitely worth thinking about though.
I know what you mean, doesn't seem to make much sense to get rid of Sissoko when he's in decent form!

    Hi Mark,
Will the page auto-update (not refresh) if a new comment has been detected? Or is that more of a nuisance since there is probably a new comment every ten seconds!
Or maybe a simple choice of a timed autorefresh? Even if the delay is long like (five minutes since last refresh). Better than nothing I guess.
Also, how many downvotes (as you have currently set it to) does it take for the comments to magically vanish? I am glad to see the website come so far.

Excuse my trivial curiosities. Thanks, and good luck.

Also, if it is not too much of a hassle, then I would like to suggest to replace the vertical grey bar next to a 'reply post' with a colored arrow leading from post to reply, with a different colored arrow for a reply to a different post. The colors dont have to be bright and flashy, but there's loads of fine matte finish colors to go nicely along with the theme of the website. I hope that makes sense. I'm not very good at elaborating. Thanks again for reading.

The reason I have made the suggestion above is that it becomes a pain to mentally align the vertical bars to figure out who exactly replied to whom. Or maybe its just me. No criticism, only suggestion.

Right now we've gone with the same look so things don't jar on the rollout. However, we do plan a complete styling change - over the summer at the latest. This isn't a bad suggestion tbh.

We are likely to have auto refresh on the matchday comments but not on the everyday ones. However, there is a bar at the top of the thread that detects how many new comments have been added since you last refreshed to inform you how many new comments have arrived.

The downvote threshold, like everything in HomeCrowd, is fully configurable. It's based on comment rating rather than the number of votes. This means that if 5 high rep users downvote a comment, its likely to be removed more quickly than if 20 new users or low rep users downvote it. In this way, the power to get comments removed by voting is given to the trusted users who have earned rep whilst those users who have got themselves a bad rep (by having comments down voted) have little effect with their vote.

Again, that's fully configurable. We can edit the starting rep and the rep of any user on the fly. I'm thinking all, apart from those who become moderators and existing contributors, will start on something like 20 rep so that voting has some impact initially. That's what we have on test right now.

Given that you earn rep for earning votes for your comments, most decent posters will earn a slice of rep everyday. As rep increases across the board, so we'll change the thresholds for having a comment removed by downvoting.

Yep, after a week or so, the active and good contributors should have picked up some decent rep. At a certain level of rep, folk get a badge upgrade but they never actually see their rep.

Just read the article and this looks interesting. Am wondering how rep is determined from the baseline or start as well. Will membership factor into this?

Nope, 99% of users will start on the same rep score and build from there (or drop - nobody can go below zero though). Membership will only get you a nice badge under your gravatar.

Mods and Contributors will have higher rep so that their vote has more power since they are considered trusted users. They'll also have admin rights too - the ability to unapprove, moderate and sticky comments.

We don't have any mods as such at the moment. We currently have folk like Jonty, Granville, Andy, Paul and Stilicho are all contributors who have mod rights.

When we launch HomeCrowd, we'll be asking for and looking for mods to come forward. They won't have all the same admin rights as a contributor but they will have basic stuff like the ability to moderate a comment (remove a comment and replace it with a moderation message).

I do like a nice badge, and am encouraged by the mods and contributors being the rep baseline since your perspective is ultimately what most of us have bought into, but I would not love it if a member got ripped for an opinion to the point where his or her experience on the site/voice was diminished.

I totally agree but, if this happened and a users rep took an unfair bashing, we'd spot it very quickly and we can restore the rep in seconds. And, like I say above, I can fix such a scenario in seconds - an up vote from me would balance out the rating of many, many downvotes 😉

Will the most recent comment (or thread with the most recent addition) automatically go to the top of the page so we don't have to click back through old pages to continue a longer-running conversation?

The default is as it is now but you'll be able to sort by Date (newest first) or Date (newest last). You can also sort by Discussion Rating (to view the top rated discussions first) or by Sticky (to show all the sticky comments in a article thread first).

Eventually you'll also be able to sort by any user who has commented in a thread and any user you're following.

I don't know how others use the site but I'm constantly hitting refresh to view the latest comments and then often have to click back a page to follow a conversation thread that's continuing after a page change (the pages fly by way to quickly on match days) - I know there are workarounds for this but none are neat. For me it's about being able to see the most recent comments as easily as possible so yes, I guess I would prefer to have newest first. This would also let me see very easily if an older conversation has had new comments added to it.

I have to be honest and say im slightly alarmed by the part where it states - downvoting by 5 high rep users can get a comment removed. I understand the thinking behind it but I really do fear it could lead to cliques ruling the roost and bold thinking being being down-repped.

Like for example Ive been saying since just after xmas that Michu was due a downturn, and indeed he's scored just 2 goals (fortunately for his owners in the double if you ask me!). At the time I was basically laughed at. Would my comment be down-voted? I hope not. (and yes i got shot of Michu weeks ago and haven't looked back since! :))

The comments that get the most congratulatory comments at the moment are those which are lengthy and are full of logic, reasoning and stats.

If you said Michu was due a downturn and outlined a argument as to why then you would get an upvote.

I did - basically its just to do with regression to the mean, his numbers were waay above the sustainable point, much like Cisse's from the end of last season (ie he didnt continue that into the new season, which i seem to remember many thought he would :))

I posted something the other day which was almost completely ignored. It was to do with why how people end up at the top, and how they all seemingly have good starts (for the most part), as discussed in the scoutcast.

As I said at that time this really is just numbers game, very similar to the infinite number of monkeys producing shakespeare scenario. Its only logical given many hundreds of thousands managers that those at the top will represent those who have shown very close to the ideal selections/transfers. Kind of like natural selection. Those players will logically have made pretty much the best moves at the right time.

Anyway, i hope the new comments system is a success, i was merely voicing a slight concern.

You raise good points. However, I think your comment may have got quite a lot of upvotes under the new system. It may even have been stickied. This is the point, the good stuff is being missed - contributions like the one you describe is too easily overlooked. I'm hopeful that, by allowing voting on comments, we will see good contributions recognised.

No, your questions have helped me explain a lot of things so I'm grateful. I have given this a lot of thought but no doubt there will be problems but the key factor is the code is ours, when we find a problem, we can sort it and go on developing HomeCrowd to suit our needs.

I get your concerns. I do think there is a danger that 'playground rules' will kick in and the 'popular' kids and those in some of the fairly obvious cliques that already exist will start to either intentionally or unintentionally dictate the flow of the conversation on the site. Having said that, I think there are enough 'neutrals' along with the scouts etc. to keep an eye on things and keep it in check.

Indeed, i hope you are right, (apologies to Mark if I came across as overly negative) i think that the system does have the potential to be a good thing.

I hope it can serve to encourage a set of posters who I haven't seen quite so much of here in the last season but whose opinion on Fantasy Football i respect very much (ie carries far more value for me than someone who has a decent enough rank this season but no solid history - id rather listen to someone who has finished in the top 5k multiple times than someone who is currently ranked in the top 1k - although this is clearly to be commended :))

When I say 5 high rep users - I'm talking very high rep - mods or the equivalent and that doesn't take into account any positive voting a comment may earn.

There could be attempts at cliques but the admin tool looks and displays a complete real-time log of every vote cast, who has voted most that day, who is voting for who most etc. We will spot such behaviour and then zero and freeze the rep for those acting in this way.

Remember also that one vote up from me or a contributor or a mod will boost the rating considerably, balancing out any potential negative clique voting that goes on.

In addition, we can set it so that, when a comment reaches the threshold, it needs admin or mod sign off before it is actually removed.

I would like to think so. As an example, If an attempted clique of five users all downvote a comment, one positive vote from a mod will likely outweigh them.

If we spot anything fishy, we can zero their rep, freeze it so it can't increase and silence their vote. The user will never know this has taken place (since nobody can see their rep score, only rep milestones once they reach a certain level) and will go on voting without any effect.

Anyone think Mata & Michu to Santi & Lamps is a good move?

I appreciate it's a little sideways but I really can't see Mata starting against Southampton and Lampard starts all league games these days. I've also used the members comparison tool and there is really nothing between them.

Michu's form is woeful and I fancy Cazorla to repeat his heroics against Reading again.

      Would appreciate any advice please.

There is a bit of risk in Michu to Santi (though this will likely be my move as well) and then the slight downgrade of Mata to Lamps (assuming it is because the Mata salary is a makeweight?) -- not a big fan of 2 risks combining, but at least you are getting a legit Chelsea cover in return. Why not?

            Thanks to both of you.

It will free up a little money for Sissoko to Fellaini for Everton's DGW 33 and then maybe I could do Santi to Silva for the Man City fixtures.

Take a look at Mata vs Lamps on the comparison tool. Lamps is much more direct and has penalties. The additional cash is also vital at this time of the season.

Whilst a rep system is clearly needed here, there are some basic things I would also like to see in the new comments system:

        - being able to embed images, tweets and gifs into a post as opposed to having to post a URL
        - being able to embed links within text
        - being able to click on a user's name and see their posting history
        - being able to post comments behind the members' paywall

That mostly sounds good. One thing I wouldn't want is images/gifs coming up on the page. Makes it slower to refresh and, depending on the image, it could be awkward if someone is peering at your screen

          In turn:

          - Please no, no, no. The last thing I want to see is an endless stream of stupid gifs etc. Links work just fine, pages are 'neat' and I can pick and choose which I want to look at. It would also be a moderators nightmare kicking out all the inappropriate content that would get posted, along with copyright issues etc.
          - Yup, fine with this one. Allowing some elements of a WYSIWYG editor would do this (also allowing bold font etc.)
          - yes, although this would lose the link to your FPL team thing which has always been a feature of the site
          - Integrated comments system would be my preference. Content behind the paywall is fine but let's keep the comments and community as one.

Two is done..all links in comments turn to hyperlinks. three will be done - hopefully for rollout. four can be done very very easily if we want to.

As for number one - I think that would be asking for trouble.

On point 1, I was imagining this along the lines of an individual user being able to switch this on or off, so images etc. either appear as links (like they currently do) or they could appear on the page if the user so chooses.

It's a shame if you can't trust posters to respect things like copyright of images, I've seen it work well on other sites, but fair enough if you don't think that could work here.

On the 4th point, my suggestion is driven by the fact I do a lot of analysis and visualisations using the Opta stats in the members' area, which I think could be useful for the wider community, but which I always hesitate to post because it is based on restricted data.

Is there not a danger that the rep system makes this place (even more) cliquey? Those who post most frequently are likely to get higher rep than somebody who can post less frequently but makes equally valid points. Just a danger that certain high profile posters get too much power IMO.

Yeah it seems implied that the more you post the higher rep you will get (unless you're a troll). Arguably that is what you want since those that invest the most of their time deserve a bit of rep. Course those that post more useful stuff will get higher rep, all things being equal.

I think there's a chance that people who post little but contribute a lot per post (bap chap, applebonkers, demi spring to mind) might be under-recognized. But the scouts can manually boost them.

I suppose there's the distinct possibility that the bap chap could gain the rep of several hundred normal posts when he posts his predictions, so there's a decent chance.

I fancy people will piss around and act awkward for a week after it comes in, then people will actually start trying to use the system to make fantasy decisions as opposed to an ego playground.

Remember that we can tweak threasholds, freeze rep etc. Users will never see their rep or see it go up or see how close they are to the next level. We'll be monitoring the high rep earners carefully, checking that they are earning it.

Also remember that all they are gaining is more say in the rating of other comments - e.g.: their vote has more weight as they are seen as a trusted and respected user.

I realise it's too late, but I think the main problem with the comments system on this site is that comments are necessarily linked to the latest article. I think the main necessary improvement would have been to have a traditional forum approach, with thread. If people wanted to comment on articles, fair enough, but otherwise they could look at threads of interest to them, thus giving the ability to avoid endless RMTs, and keeping lively discussions going over a period of many days (potentially).

Yes exactly that. But that's very unusual on this site, and rather a special case, due to the article in question being preserved on the home page. With a thread-based approach it could become normality.

Completely agree with this, it's impossible to have a coherent conversation over a matter of hours let alone minutes at the moment, because the narrative moves on so quickly.

I suppose you would still need a live thread to post RMTs and the other frivolous conversations that seem to dominate.

The stickies will go some way to solving this.

When a comment is stickied, it's given a headline (like a forum post title). So perhaps a comment about Michu's form is given the headline - Michu in decline? - that headline will appear on the comment (which is also shaded to allow it to stand out in a thread) and it will also be placed in a widget in the sidebar along with all the other recent stickied comments. These therefore become our "hot topics" of the day/week.

So if folk want to find the top discussions of the day or the last few days, they can look to the sidebar, and click on a sticky headline and be taken to that comment and its replies. Rather like a forum. Those discussions can then build rather than be lost.

I think its optimistic to change the culture 100% and get folk to discuss the article and nothing else. We looked at the idea of a forum but that had its own risks and problems. We've gone for a hybrid solution in a way.

I don't want to be perceived as negative - I am looking forward to the new system, and it's good to see the people behind the site putting in such effort to improve it. The stickies sound interesting - can't quite imagine them right now, but will enjoy playing with them, I'm sure.

No bother. Think of stickies as comments and discussions that mods have picked out as interesting. They get a headline and are flagged in the sidebar so you can retrieve them and get to them quickly - basically, it forms a list of top, most discussed or notable discussions of the day. Like a forum front page, but only listing the good stuff.

A mod or contributor can sticky a comment and they give it a title. Given that comments are getting votes all the time, when we see a comment getting some postive votes, we'll immediately be sniffing for a possible sticky. So to speak.

            I agree.

I'd of thought links to threads discussing a certain player would be very instructive and appealing to every end user.

Perhaps both users and the players discussed can have hyperlinks to previous discussion threads.

Yep I agree. So, if theres a comment on Rooney vs Van Persie and it leads to a discussion of say, 5-6 good replies, a mod can sticky it, give it a "Rooney vs RVP" title and have it listed in the sidebar for everyone to retrieve it easily and quickly.

In this way, the good, interesting and valuable comments/discussion, can be found and develop more easily.

If there's a separate discussion about Rooney vs RVP, will this also be tagged with the same headline so all the similar discussions appear together? that would be a pretty neat solution.

I'd like to think that, if we have a stickied discussion on rooney vs rvp, folk wouldn't post another one or, if they do, they'd be referred to it by another user or mod. No doubt we'll have repeat discussions but we will try to sticky the best ones - the ones with the most activity and highest rating.
