With a single goal in his last six appearances, Robin Van Persieโ€™s season seems to be stuttering to a halt as United close in on the title. Having notched six times in the previous five league fixtures, the Dutchmanโ€™s drought has had a huge impact across the Fantasy games โ€“ coinciding with a return to fitness which has seen Wayne Rooney find the net five times by comparison. As the transfers out continue to flow, our latest article for members focuses on the pairโ€™s respective performances over those matches and also casts an eye on Van Persieโ€™s previous displays to establish whether there is any real cause for concern:

As the above maps indicate, Rooneyโ€™s role (right) has been more withdrawn than the Dutchmanโ€™s (left) over the featured period. Dropping deep to link with the midfield, the former Everton man has received a pass from team mates at almost twice the pace of Van Persie (2.1 to 3.9) and although this is understandable due to their respective roles, Rooney has also proven superior in the final third of the pitch in terms of involvement.

While Van Persie has averaged 23.5 touches in the final third between Gameweeks 24 and 30, Rooney has registered 30.3. The latter has received over double the number of passes (20.5 to 9.7), and has made over twice the number of successful passes in this crucial attacking area (14.5 to 7). Although the Dutchman has returned three FPL assists to Rooneyโ€™s two over the six featured matches, heโ€™s offered far less creativity โ€“ averaging 1.3 โ€œkey passesโ€ to Rooneyโ€™s 2.3, which equates to a chance created every 60.6 minutes in compared to the far quicker pace of 36.1 minutes offered by Rooney.

Sorting the forwards statistics by โ€œLast Six Matchesโ€, itโ€™s telling to see that only Fulhamโ€™s Bryan Ruiz has averaged more touches than Rooney (1.1 to 1.3), while the Costa Rican also edges Rooney into second for minutes per pass received, by 2 to 2.1. Indeed, while Rooney is second for chances created, with 14 to Rickie Lambertโ€™s 15, Van Persieโ€™s total of 8 over his last six appearances puts him on a par with Arouna Kone and Andy Carroll. Furthermore, Rooneyโ€™s above-mentioned average of 36.1 minutes per key pass is second to Carlos Tevez (34.2) for regular starters, demonstrating his constant creativity and suggesting heโ€™s been unlucky to pick up just two assists over the timeframe.

Given that Van Persie has notched just once, itโ€™s perhaps surprising to see he has actually seen more of the ball inside the penalty area than Rooney, with 5.8 touches to 5.2 per game. Rooney, however, has offered the greater threat โ€“ he has averaged 4 shots per game over the six matches in comparison to Van Persieโ€™s 3.2 and, despite seeing less of the ball in the box, has been more consistent in producing efforts from close range, with 2.2 shots inside the area to Van Persieโ€™s 1.8. In terms of minutes per attempt, Rooney slightly edges it with a shot every 21 minutes to Van Persieโ€™s average of 25.5.

Analysing the pairโ€™s accuracy, though, Van Persie clearly remains a major threat. He has registered more shots on target per game (1.5 to 1.2) than Rooney โ€“ crucially, what this boils down to is that 47.4% of his shots have been on target in comparison to just 29.2% of Rooneyโ€™s efforts, a definite sign that his threat remains significant. Due to the endeavours of opposition keepers, the Dutchman has failed to flourish. Van Persie has scored just one of his 19 attempts, then, (a conversion rate of 5%), while Rooney has found the net with 20.8% of his efforts (24 shots, 5 goals).

Again, looking at other forwards sorted by โ€œLast Six Matchesโ€ , itโ€™s somewhat reassuring for Van Persieโ€™s owners to see that only two forwards โ€“ Daniel Sturridge and Javier Hernandez โ€“ have produced more efforts on target, with 12 and 11 respectively. Rooney has managed 7 shots on target, scoring 5 times, then, while the Dutchmanโ€™s poor conversion has resulted in one goal from 9 shots on target โ€“ a tally mirrored by Luis Suarez and Romelu Lukaku, who scored 5 and 4 times respectively, while Christian Benteke found the net 5 times from 8 efforts on target.

Having compared Van Persieโ€™s performances to Rooney over the last six, we now analyse them against his previous five appearances โ€“ a period where Rooney played just 29 minutes, after climbing off the bench to signal his return from injury in the Gameweek 23 clash with Tottenham.

Immediately, you can see the impact Rooney has made on Van Persieโ€™s overall involvement; his previous average of 3.2 minutes per pass received has dropped to 3.9, while the Dutchmanโ€™s touches in the final third slipped from 28.8 to 23.5 over the two periods. In terms of passes received in the final third, the decrease has been minimal (11.6 to 9.7), while the same also applies to the number of successful passes Van Persie has made in the danger area โ€“ moving from 8.8 per appearance between Gameweek 19-23 down to 7 per appearance over Gameweek 24-30. Perhaps surprisingly, Van Persieโ€™s creativity has increased in recent weeks, moving from 0.8 key passes to 1.3, or a chance created every 102.8 minutes to one every 60.6 minutes.

When we look at goal threat, though, thereโ€™s been a definite difference. Although Van Persie has more or less registered the same touches in the box (6.0 has slipped slightly to 5.8), his previous average of 4.4 attempts per game without Rooney has now slumped to 3.2 โ€“ intriguingly, this was the number of efforts he was averaging inside the box in Rooneyโ€™s absence and not far off double his current average of 1.8 efforts from close range. Van Persie was also producing more shots on target (2 to 1.5) over the first period and while his overall accuracy has dropped a touch (47.4% to 45.5%) it remains far superior to Rooneyโ€™s recent level of 29.2%.

Previously, the Dutchman was registering a shot every 18.7 minutes – better than his or Rooneyโ€™s current rate of 25.5 and 21 respectively, though the main issue, as mentioned above, is really just his current conversion rate. Without Rooney alongside him, Van Persie tucked away 27.3% of his chances over Gameweeks 19-23 and, while itโ€™s clear his strike partner has impacted upon his performances since returning, Van Persie only really has himself โ€“ and, in part, opposition keepers โ€“ to blame for this plummeting to a lowly 5.3%. With a season average conversion rate of 18.4%, though, an upturn on Fantasy performances looks on the cards despite a definite decrease in his overall threat since Rooney’s return to the United XI.

College Dropout is a brilliant album. Late Registration another solid effort. Graduation has some nice tracks. MBDTF is a complex album. I think it will become better over time.

All his auto-tune stuff is horrible though.

808s was ok but was just one of those albums where the artist tries something completely different and it never quite works. Saw him live last year with Jay-Z, they are both unreal live, great gig.

very bipolar combination, I don't really think it works out to be fair. e.g. Jay's verse in Suit&Tie just doesn't really fit in the song. I suppose it helps to promote both though.

I think Jay drops on anything popular to keep himself relevant like Beyonce, Rihanna, Kanye and now Justin. A shame as since he started doing this his albums have been pretty mediocre, American Gangster was his last good one

Have you heard the Kendrick-Jay-Z remix for B, Don't Kill My Vibe?

Wasn't overly impressed with Jay's verse, seemed like quite a throwaway one. Guess he just jumps on what's hot to keep himself on the radio whilst churning out the next album. A shame though.

I read about it yesterday then gave it a listen. I knew before I heard the Jay-Z verse it wouldn't be all that. Reasonable Doubt is an amazing album and most of his stuff since hasn't come close to that. Too commercial most of it for mu liking.

I'm a sucker for the soulful beats of the Blueprint, but the double/triple entendre's and metaphors on RD are probably his finest work. His Illmatic, his masterpiece.

"I kept feeding her money until her sh*t started to make cents/sense..."

I'd read about it, but this is my first time hearing it. Lupe's been purposely out of the limelight as of late (aside from publicly slagging Obama that is).

He's got a special gift for deep tracks I find, not always about such sad events but songs with a deeper meaning.

They played Glastonbury in 2011, Rae was absent though. Set was great but crowd were poor, they didn't really know the classic tracks and they were probably on too early in the day.

This place is gone a bit cerrazzy. I'm very surprised that my favourite chooooon of all time seems to be missing ; Barney's classic "If all the Raindrops were Lemon Drops and Gum Drops."
It's taken from his seminal debut album, Barney's Favourites (Vol 1) from 1993.
It was re-released in 2000 as part of his much criticized "Greatest Hits" album.....fans were unhappy that it was relegated to Track 3.
More worryingly, this classic piece was unceremoniously dumped down to Track 14 for Barney's "Big Surprise" LP, also released in 2000.

I won't bother with the youtube link because I'm fairly certain you're all pretty embarrassed that this modern day classic has been overlooked in this thread and you're all humming it in your FPL starved tiny minds as we speak.

Often depends on which region or nation the rap has come from. I never fully understand the dialect or accent of some Southern rappers, mostly because I was brought up on primarily East coast rappers (Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang, Guru, Rakim...)

The Preemo-Nas combo is a strange one, barring the song "Classic" they've not worked together since Stillmatic over a decade ago. Strange when you think of the early music they've created together.

I have that DVD too, I was a little concerned because he uses his hype man to finish most of his raps. Felt like he stepped it up in front of Luda and Jada mind!

He was brilliant, really really tops. Live band with DJ Statik Selektah used for certain songs. A lot of Life is Good coverage but went through his old classics too (which is what I was hoping for). Been determined to hear "Get Down" live for years - finally heard it complete with a brilliant piece of trumpet playing.

My GOAT now, yeah. Pure longevity has elevated him above Biggie to me. Jay is really tight up there for me too.

I love the resurrection of Nas, after the failure of Nastradamus and struggling with his mothers death around the time of Stillmatic. As soon as the intro comes into the album you know he's found redemption.

Like Hicks in a way critically Biggie was a benefit of his own demise.

Illmatic is artistically amazing. Combining the flow and to some level polished production with upmost street grit and then as you say returning with Stillmatic I mean you could've released the album with just Ether and it would still be a classic.

Its potential vs. reality, Biggie potentially could have dominated rap. But its important to remember sometimes that him and Nas were very close in terms of popularity and critical acclaim at the time - before adding on the 10 albums Nas followed up with.

The age of these guys still baffles me. Nas was writing Illmatic in his late teenage years.

In saying that Biggie's verse on Notorious Thugs is amongst my top 10 ever I think.
