As the season unwinds over the final two months, the goalkeeper position for many Premier League outfits continues to prove volatile. With injuries and poor form blighting most top-flight sides between the sticks, few stoppers have afforded a consistency of game time quite like Jussi Jaaskelainen. The West Ham number one is one of just four goalkeepers – along with Simon Mignolet, Asmir Begovic and Joe Hart – to start every game for his club so far and as the only member of that quartet with a double Gameweek on his hands, the Fin makes his way onto Fantasy radars.

As a result of his guaranteed game time, it’s no surprise to learn Jaaskelainen is the second most popular stopper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with an ownership of 18% bettered only by Begovic’s 24%. There’s no doubt the Hammers’ start played a part in quickly acquiring new suitors; three clean sheets in the opening four Gameweeks highlighted his cut-price potential, with Villa, Fulham and Norwich all repelled in rapid succession. By the time Gameweek 11 was done and dusted, Jaaskelainen had also helped nullify the threat of City and Newcastle – five clean sheets by early November saw an initial FPL price of 4.5 climb to 5.0.

The next few months were tough on Allardyce’s side, though. A brutal schedule resulted in a loss of form which saw defensive returns hard to come by – the next 14 Gameweeks harvested just a single clean sheet (away to West Brom) and, having peaked at 5.3, Jaaskelainen began to shed owners. Nevertheless, a recent defensive revival has resulted in a couple of clean sheets in the last five (SWA, sto) and with doubts over the likes of Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Joe Cole, it seems that Allardyce is prepared to keep things tight and simply grind out results to clinch his side’s survival.

From here on in, Jaaskelainen has an enticing run of home games which is sure to earn him further investment. Factoring in his double Gameweek 33, the remaining Upton Park schedule reads (WBA, sot & MUN, WIG, NEW, RDG), leaving just three fixtures as problematic – Gameweeks 32, 35 and 37, where the Hammers travel to Liverpool, City and Everton respectively. For those already holding Begovic, this works perfectly – Stoke entertain Villa, Norwich and Tottenham over those matches. Although Norwich, Reading, QPR and Newcastle also look rotation alternatives for the Hammers stopper, all but QPR currently have question marks over their number one spot.

With 109 points accrued thus far, Jaaskelainen sits fifth in the FPL keeper standings and first in the West Ham pecking order with 10 matches remaining. Granted, he may be pricier than his defensive team mates but the Fin’s saves consistently boost his appeal – a total of 118 edges Mignolet into second and sums up his importance to the Hammers’ cause. With George McCartney returning to fitness, question marks now hang over the full-back berths and with Allardyce subbing off James Collins for James Tomkins with 30 minutes remaining of the last league game against Chelsea, only Winston Reid seems to vie with Jaaskelainen for security of starts. Sitting 23 points behind his keeper, though, the Kiwi makes a far less persuasive case by comparison.

    @ Charlie

Sorry for sporadic replies, I'm multi-tasking. I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the defenders I've owned this year have been full-backs, with the exceptions not performing too well for me.

Hernandez is a big punt. I hope flying back by private jet means he's playing.

I picked Coutinho as soon as I saw him play his first 90 minutes.
Great little footballer. (and nice fixtures)

I'm very worried about what a 10th yellow card will do to Liverpool's fortunes but this has been previously discussed of course.

Funny utd fans talking of love for Berbatov... he had some poor seasons if i remember well? Giroud has probably scored more than Berbatov did in one of his utd seasons. Remember it's his first season and he's done scored 15 goals so far and will probably hit 20 before the end of the season.

I'm not a United fan, but yeah, you might want to look into stats, Berba's scored quite a lot of goals for United. 21 if I remember correctly just 2 seasons back, and Giroud has got them in French league, way easier than EPL.

      my earlier post...

This is a joke world cup qualifying group.

      Group E

      Switzerland
      Iceland
      Albania
      Norway
      Cyprus
      Slovenia

How are all these easy teams in one group? who are the top seeds? and second seeds? Switzerland? I can’t see how this group was put together. Looks like another Sepp Blatter/FIFA Fix to me. In comparison to other groups toughness this is pathetic.

I'm sick of this season. I've had so many injuries I've lost count. Aguero getting injured after 9 minutes of GW1 was an ominous sign and things have continued that way all season.
No more moaning, I'm just going to take a big dirty 8 point hit. They're fun and I'll be nicely set up for the DGW. Now, I'm much happier getting that off my chest.

I like those moves. Unorthodox to take out a player (RVP) who might have a DGW. I am hesitating to move Rooney (he would free up cash) because it will feel foolish if MUN end up with a double GW33. How are you rationalising it?

Well I think there's a strong chance that RVP will be rested this GW. Also a strong chance that United will beat Chelsea and therefore not have a DGW. Plus RVP is extremely boring to own. Plus if they DO get the dgw I can always get him back in, especially if Suarez gets banned.

Good luck in the cup, btw!

I'm on the fence at the minute, but looking at the DGW, it makes a 1-week punt on United attack better than Chelsea attack. Between Rafa-tation and title-tation its gonna be tough to predict the big hitters.

If Chelsea = won't be getting a defender but will double up with Mata + Hazard/ Ba (maybe triple)

If United = DDG in goal, with Rooney up front.

Chelsea looks the easier DGW to get players in, but United have the better fixtures arguably. That Tottenham blank though would be sweet considering I dont have Bale

Reservoir Dogs stuck in the middle of you scene is a classic

Nice. Yup, that's up there Frankie... the 'cutting off ear scene' is right beside it

Nah, it's just overly brutal, and with very little point to it. Reservoir Dogs is a horrible film, with some enjoyable moments (mainly dialogue), and I speak as someone who is generally a Tarantino fan.

No. Because it is completely constructed. There are no records of such a thing happening during the war, which - in the case of a film like Deer Hunter, with its 'realistic' tone - kind of isn't totally okay, as it is making the Vietnamese look like absolute savages.

who cares. it's awesome viewing. Who needs 'PC' when you've a phenomenal cast, wicked director and 'edge of their seat' audience.

It's what great film-making is all about.

Whisper it quietly, but The Deerhunter is overlong, and yes more than a little boring. Agree the Russian Roulette scene holds the tension well, though.

Completely agree with this comment however. It is overlong and a little boring... this scene definitely escalates it into cult/classic status though

Well least he's guaranteed to play every game unlike my rather fragile De Gea and Bunn pairing
