As the season unwinds over the final two months, the goalkeeper position for many Premier League outfits continues to prove volatile. With injuries and poor form blighting most top-flight sides between the sticks, few stoppers have afforded a consistency of game time quite like Jussi Jaaskelainen. The West Ham number one is one of just four goalkeepers – along with Simon Mignolet, Asmir Begovic and Joe Hart – to start every game for his club so far and as the only member of that quartet with a double Gameweek on his hands, the Fin makes his way onto Fantasy radars.

As a result of his guaranteed game time, it’s no surprise to learn Jaaskelainen is the second most popular stopper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with an ownership of 18% bettered only by Begovic’s 24%. There’s no doubt the Hammers’ start played a part in quickly acquiring new suitors; three clean sheets in the opening four Gameweeks highlighted his cut-price potential, with Villa, Fulham and Norwich all repelled in rapid succession. By the time Gameweek 11 was done and dusted, Jaaskelainen had also helped nullify the threat of City and Newcastle – five clean sheets by early November saw an initial FPL price of 4.5 climb to 5.0.

The next few months were tough on Allardyce’s side, though. A brutal schedule resulted in a loss of form which saw defensive returns hard to come by – the next 14 Gameweeks harvested just a single clean sheet (away to West Brom) and, having peaked at 5.3, Jaaskelainen began to shed owners. Nevertheless, a recent defensive revival has resulted in a couple of clean sheets in the last five (SWA, sto) and with doubts over the likes of Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Joe Cole, it seems that Allardyce is prepared to keep things tight and simply grind out results to clinch his side’s survival.

From here on in, Jaaskelainen has an enticing run of home games which is sure to earn him further investment. Factoring in his double Gameweek 33, the remaining Upton Park schedule reads (WBA, sot & MUN, WIG, NEW, RDG), leaving just three fixtures as problematic – Gameweeks 32, 35 and 37, where the Hammers travel to Liverpool, City and Everton respectively. For those already holding Begovic, this works perfectly – Stoke entertain Villa, Norwich and Tottenham over those matches. Although Norwich, Reading, QPR and Newcastle also look rotation alternatives for the Hammers stopper, all but QPR currently have question marks over their number one spot.

With 109 points accrued thus far, Jaaskelainen sits fifth in the FPL keeper standings and first in the West Ham pecking order with 10 matches remaining. Granted, he may be pricier than his defensive team mates but the Fin’s saves consistently boost his appeal – a total of 118 edges Mignolet into second and sums up his importance to the Hammers’ cause. With George McCartney returning to fitness, question marks now hang over the full-back berths and with Allardyce subbing off James Collins for James Tomkins with 30 minutes remaining of the last league game against Chelsea, only Winston Reid seems to vie with Jaaskelainen for security of starts. Sitting 23 points behind his keeper, though, the Kiwi makes a far less persuasive case by comparison.

    I loved this scene, but I didn't really like the rest of the film. For me this scene IS the film pretty much because of the hype. Definitely 8 or 9 for me.

    Personally my favourite movie scene is the Hammer Scene from Oldboy - done in 1 take... truly amazing!

    evening all.
    made top 10,000. have 40 points to make up i mini-league.

    team:

    bego/bunn
    zab/demel/harte/baines/davies
    walcott/coutinho/fell/bale/sissoko
    suarez/remy/benteke

    8.2m in bank. fellaini banned...want to keep him. walcott injured...want to keep him.
    want caz. then all depends, chelsea vs united.

    any suggestions welcome. currently only 6 mid/forwards starting.
    sell sissoko for caz? if i sell walcott, i'll be buying him back in 2 weeks anyways...

      Sissoko -> Carzorla

      Then sort out Man Utd/Chelsea picks after the FA cup replay.

      GW33 Coutinho -> Hazard could be very profitable if Chelsea have a DGW33

      But hang on to him as long as Suarez avoids yellow as the fixtures are great.

    Michu to Cazorla a good move as my FT?

    Had Michu all season so would probs make it difficult to get him back but his returns have slowed and he has tough fixtures and a blank coming up compared to Caz and his double.

    Also, Caz didn't play at all in Spain's games, that was just selection and not a knock or anything like that?

      No but I think he'll play every game until the title is mathematically beyond City! I think Fergie sees consistency of game time as crucial to De Gea's confidence and performance levels. The amount of interchanging between the two earlier in the season did nobody any favours, United were conceding goals for fun

    I still haven't a clue what to do with this team. I'd love to keep Walcott, Mata, RvP and Rooney for the double but seems to me they may not start this weekend. What would you do with this?

    Mignolet
    Clyne - Evans - Demel
    Puncheon - Mata - Sissoko - Bale
    Sturridge - RvP - Rooney

    Bench: Cerny - Walcott - Pearce - Martin R.

      Puncheon -> Carzorla (dead wood removal for a good captain punt)
      Rooney/RVP -> Berbatov (going up tonight)

      I'd tend to want to remove Van Persie as I feel he is almost certain to be rested for the Chelsea game.

      Also you have more flexibility to rework your team.

      (Sissoko -> Hazard/Kagawa when Fa Cup replay is done)

        At this point, if I had a choice, I would prefer not to take a hit. I can settle with my current forwards but what of Walcott to Cazorla. I read many on here said this Walcott to Cazorla being a good move for those who still have a WC as we can get him back into the squad.

        Mata to Hazard is one I am seriously considering after the FA Cup replay and Sturridge will definitely be offloaded for Berbatov.

      Well my tuppence on the subject is that Kagawa and Hernandez are unlikely to play due to long haul flights. Also Hernandez has an excellent record against Chelsea so he'll likely be preserved for that game. Fergie has also stated on record that he feels Rooney is a player that benefits from playing lots of games, or else he'll struggle for fitness and form. Fergie will want to keep RVP's confidence up after the international break. My prediction is both RVP and Rooney will start the weekend

      Tricky, I think you should try to remove deadwood for DGW players.

      Consider:

      Sturridge -> Berbatov (DGW33)
      Puncheon -> Maloney (DGW36)

      Obviously Sturridge has good fixtures, but injury and the threat of Suarez getting a 10th yellow make him a shakey hold. Berbatov is going up tonight which may sway you. (Note Carzorla is also going up tonight so if you want him maybe you should take another look. I personally would rather have Carzorla than Berbatov for DGW33).

    My potential DGW 33 Team if Chelsea wins

    De Gea
    Evra Distin Reither
    Fellaini Walcott Cazorla Mata
    Berba Remy Sturridge

    Looks good? 🙂

    And if ManU wins
    Jussi
    Azpili Reither Distin
    Fellaini Walcott Cazorla Mata
    Ba Berba Sturridge

    Great? huh? 😉

      I prefer Hazard over Mata as he's playing fantastically at the moment. (Chelsea DGW33)

      Also Kagawa (for Sturridge) would probably be an improvement. (Man Utd DGW33)

      I assume you can't afford Rooney.

        Kagawa , hmmmm , food for thought 🙂
        If i get Kagawa that would give me 10 DGW players but at the cost of 8 point hit next week.
        Lets see how the FA Cup replay goes .
        Will decide after that.
        Thanks for your input

    Is this madness

    Suarez and Punch to Cazorla and Berbs for 8pt hit

    Reason Suarez will get booked against Villa

    Caz and Berbs going up tonight and will be hopefully in the points against Reading and Qpr ???

    or should I just leave it alone and see how it all plays out Help appreciated

      Both going up tonight but Suarez has fantastic fixtures.

      Suarez as captain could earn you a lot of points over the next two GWs.

      Big hit, if you're totally committed to having these two and think you'll never be able to afford them if you don't do it tonight, then good luck.

    What's the argument for WC owners taking a hit? If I don't take hits, I might be left starting with only 3 midfielders with Puncheon and Walcott benched and injured respectively.

    (A) Mata ➡ Cazorla
    (B) Puncheon ➡ Townsend

      The -4 hit needs to pay itself back pretty much straight away, if you're WCing in GW33.

    Just seen another comment on a post advising somebody to wait until Saturday morning for a transfer,,,,Which brings me to my point...That, on the face of it, would seem sound advice but has anybody noticed just how many Friday injuries/illneses are hidden until the team sheet is isssued on the Saturday...Yaya being a good case in point last GW...May as well do transfres on Friday night and save the dosh on that basis...

      He had a migraine. surely this may have started on Saturday.

      I'm not suggesting he had a heavy Friday night just that headaches come and go.

    is walcott defo out?

    do u think they will risk him?

    Personally i think that if he is fit he will play as arsenal need to win that match and reading could be a new team under adkins (fingers crossed as im going to the reading end)

      I'd say he's 40% for the reasons you have listed. But maybe the injury is worse than at first thought and for tactical reasons this is being hidden.

      Hopefully Wenger will enlighten us in his press conference.

    Hey all..

    Team GW 31

    Jussi
    Azpi, Evans, Davies
    Mata, Bale, Walcott, Maloney
    Rooney, Suarez, Benteke

    Subs: Bego; Snodgrass, Turner, Harte

    2 frees. Save the free or sell either azpi or evans?

      A) Snodgrass -> Carzorla
      Evans -> Jenkinson/Mert/Monreal (depending on your risk tolerance)

      Subsequent GW:
      If Suarez suspended -> Berbatov
      (otherwise Benteke -> Berbatov)

      B) If you have enough cash wait for the Evans transfer to assess the Arsenal situation and because Evans is likely to be played against Sunderland with Ferdinand & Vidic saved for the FA cup replay against chelsea 2 days later.

      C)

      Suarez -> Berbatov
      Snodgrass -> Carzola

      (both going up tonight, but suarez has great fixtures and is a good captain punt over the next two GWs).
