As the season unwinds over the final two months, the goalkeeper position for many Premier League outfits continues to prove volatile. With injuries and poor form blighting most top-flight sides between the sticks, few stoppers have afforded a consistency of game time quite like Jussi Jaaskelainen. The West Ham number one is one of just four goalkeepers – along with Simon Mignolet, Asmir Begovic and Joe Hart – to start every game for his club so far and as the only member of that quartet with a double Gameweek on his hands, the Fin makes his way onto Fantasy radars.

As a result of his guaranteed game time, it’s no surprise to learn Jaaskelainen is the second most popular stopper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with an ownership of 18% bettered only by Begovic’s 24%. There’s no doubt the Hammers’ start played a part in quickly acquiring new suitors; three clean sheets in the opening four Gameweeks highlighted his cut-price potential, with Villa, Fulham and Norwich all repelled in rapid succession. By the time Gameweek 11 was done and dusted, Jaaskelainen had also helped nullify the threat of City and Newcastle – five clean sheets by early November saw an initial FPL price of 4.5 climb to 5.0.

The next few months were tough on Allardyce’s side, though. A brutal schedule resulted in a loss of form which saw defensive returns hard to come by – the next 14 Gameweeks harvested just a single clean sheet (away to West Brom) and, having peaked at 5.3, Jaaskelainen began to shed owners. Nevertheless, a recent defensive revival has resulted in a couple of clean sheets in the last five (SWA, sto) and with doubts over the likes of Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Joe Cole, it seems that Allardyce is prepared to keep things tight and simply grind out results to clinch his side’s survival.

From here on in, Jaaskelainen has an enticing run of home games which is sure to earn him further investment. Factoring in his double Gameweek 33, the remaining Upton Park schedule reads (WBA, sot & MUN, WIG, NEW, RDG), leaving just three fixtures as problematic – Gameweeks 32, 35 and 37, where the Hammers travel to Liverpool, City and Everton respectively. For those already holding Begovic, this works perfectly – Stoke entertain Villa, Norwich and Tottenham over those matches. Although Norwich, Reading, QPR and Newcastle also look rotation alternatives for the Hammers stopper, all but QPR currently have question marks over their number one spot.

With 109 points accrued thus far, Jaaskelainen sits fifth in the FPL keeper standings and first in the West Ham pecking order with 10 matches remaining. Granted, he may be pricier than his defensive team mates but the Fin’s saves consistently boost his appeal – a total of 118 edges Mignolet into second and sums up his importance to the Hammers’ cause. With George McCartney returning to fitness, question marks now hang over the full-back berths and with Allardyce subbing off James Collins for James Tomkins with 30 minutes remaining of the last league game against Chelsea, only Winston Reid seems to vie with Jaaskelainen for security of starts. Sitting 23 points behind his keeper, though, the Kiwi makes a far less persuasive case by comparison.

    Hi

Could you please answer three questions for me to help with my GW31 and DGW planning

Apart from Bale and Cazorla who is the best big budget MF (I.e. Lampard, Hazard, Mata, Gerrard etc) to have this GW

If you had Begovic as your other keeper would you play him and bench Sczescny or would do Szescny > Jassk and bench Begovic in

What are chances of Demel starting?
    Any help would be appreciated

      1) Hazard in my opinion but he may not play considering Chelsea and Man Utd play in the cup semi final 2 days later, so I'd hold off on getting Chelsea mids until after Monday.

      2) Get rid of Sir Ches for Schwarzer or Jaask

      3) Demel has a decent chance. If not then that's what your bench is for.

Yeah, Santi looks like a good option this weekend though maybe not the virtually essential status he has apparently gained this week. He hasn't being played on the left of late where he was scoring more. Not quite as hot in the hole.

I think Liverpool have improved. If Carragher marshals their defence and they have no injuries I think they'll do well. But Benteke certainly can mix it with anyone.

I think their attack protects their defence, when they're on top of the game and attacking all is well and the defence isn't tested. When they're on the back foot I think they cope pretty poorly. Some of the defending in the Spurs game was pretty dodgy. Really comes down to can Villa really play on the day or will they just be hopefully punting the ball in.

I agree, but I think if they press a high line against Villa that Villa won't cope.
I do appreciate however that Villa have a far better record against top 10 teams than the other relegation threatened teams surrounding them.

Ah, the lure of the DGW when perfectly good players are ditched for players who then return less than the player you ditched him for..........

Only the first of Berbs DGW fixtures are decent then he has 3 tough games to follow. And the 'easy' game involves Benteke anyway who could well outscore Berbs in that one.

Yeah, I know your pain too.

I am tempted to just keep him now.

Problem is that all Utd strikers played in the International break so they all are rotation risks. I genuinely doubt RVP will play against Sunderland as the league is pretty much sewn up and Sunderland are cack anyway so Sir Alex will feel he can send the reserves out and get a result.

But if you sell RVP and he plays against Chelsea and looks back to his goalscoring best then you will want him back again.

Hard to know which way to go really. I don't blame anyone for selling RVP but at the end of the day its whether you want to go without Utd attacking cover or not.

He's back to his best (3 goals and 2 assists over 2 games &175 minutes v Estonia & Romania).

If you can afford to bench him for 1 game he could repay your trust with a large DGW haul.

but as mentioned in earlier posts it is extremely unlikely that he will start against Sunderland.

            Bench I assume?

            I could do 100kg for 1 rep, maybe 2.

But today I am doing 8 reps, so I will use 75kg

            Not that impressive.

I guess Walcott to Caz might work out well for me. Something about selling Mata just wasn't right.

I want to do it before the rise, but it would be painful if Theo were to be back ahead of schedule.

Caz has as good as chance as Theo for the DGW + its not a certainty Theo will be even back for the Double. I think its the better option to get Caz in.

Doing Wally > Santi tonight, but I'm 0.1m short.

Which of these transfers for -4p. would you do to fund it ?

    A) Benteke > Berba
    B) Clyne > Jenkinson
    C) Monreal > Gibbs (Wish I knew who will start)
    D) Taarabt > Maloney

Btw. wildcarding before gw33, so its only for 2 weeks. TA

i feel that he is in great form and should have a cemented place under Adkins - he would be a great differential to and only at 4.2 is very appealing.

I know I should go with Townsend but from a Reading fan and the extra money would be nice.....

Ok so given Santi looks like going up tonight, and given I'm on wc next week so can get him back no probs. Does it make sense to just do Theo to Caz now in order to beat the rise, which matters to my wc plans?

Would sell Michu, but depending on the result of the replay I may end up wanting to keep him. I won't lose anything on Theo, he'll only fall before i come to get him back

I'd caution you to wait on Walcott as all possible replacements are less nailed on or don't have the potential to bring in as many points.
