As it gets to that time of the season where safety-first tactics are likely to disappoint, we’re upped the risk factor when assessing our trio of overlooked alternatives. Injuries to others have afforded a couple of our picks the platform to impress, while our third protagonist is hoping for an upturn in performance after a change of manager:

Gervinho

With seven starts in the opening eight Gameweeks, the Ivorian had looked an integral part of Arsene Wenger’s first-team at the start of the 2012/13 season. Having found the net in just two of those fixtures, though, a lack of consistency afforded Theo Walcott the chance to replace Gervinho on the right hand side and since then, he’s been a peripheral figure for the north London outfit.

Two starts between Gameweek 9 and 30, with a mere 17 minutes between Gameweeks 17-28 highlighted just how fall he’d fallen from favour but an injury to Walcott has suddenly thrust him back into the spotlight again. Climbing off the bench with 20 minutes remaining at Swansea late last month, he grabbed the Gunners’ second and with Walcott sidelined last weekend, his first-team return resulted in a goal and pair of assists as Wenger’s side hammered Reading 4-1.

As Walcott struggles to recover for the Gunners’ double Gameweek, Gervinho could be primed to take advantage. With assistant boss Steve Bould revealing Walcott has only “an outside chance” of making next weekend’s clash against Norwich, Fantasy faith in the Ivorian is likely to flourish – with the likes of Gareth Bales out injured, many are prepared to take a risk or two and restructure their squads in an attempt to claw back mini league deficits.

There’s no doubt his acquisition carries a degree of risk, though. If Walcott recovers in time for next weekend, there’s every chance Gervinho could be back to bench-warming duties; even if the England winger misses out against the Canaries, he could still come back to threaten Gervinho’s place against Everton the following Tuesday. Right now, though, the Ivorian is in the driving seat and his flourishing form may well convince Wenger to ease Walcott back into the first-team fold – at 6.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.6 in the Sky Sports game, he may well just be worth the gamble.

Jobi McAnuff

With eight assists to his name so far, the winger has teed up more goals than any Reading player so far this season. Indeed, McAnuff’s potent source of creativity from the flank has proven superior to the likes of Gareth Bale and Marouane Fellaini, who have seven assists apiece, while Leighton Baines’ endeavours for Everton have helped him pick up six by comparison.

After a barren spell over spring, the arrival of Nigel Adkins seems to have boosted McAnuff’s potential. A run of five Gameweeks without any returns came to an end in Adkins’ first match in charge, with McAnuff supplying the assist for Hal Robson-Kanu’s consolation in last Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at the Emirates. As Adkins attempts to arrest a run of six straight defeats, he’s set to face former club Southampton in his first home match in charge tomorrow lunchtime – it’s likely that if the home side are to get any joy from their crucial encounter with the Saints, McAnuff, at 4.7 in FPL and 5.0 in the Sky Sports game, will have a major say.

Ryan Bertrand

A hamstring injury to Ashley Cole in Chelsea’s FA Cup Sixth Round replay win over United last Monday brings the cut-price defender onto Fantasy radars. With Cole expected to be sidelined for around a fortnight, Bertrand’s stay in the first-team is likely to be no more than a temporary measure but with a home clash against Sunderland followed by a trip to Fulham, he could still appeal to those on the lookout for a budget option at the back.

This weekend, in particular, affords reason for optimism. Rafa Benitez’s side have conceded just once in their last three at the Bridge and with Sunderland still getting to grips with Paolo Di Canio’s tactics, a home clean sheet could well be on the cards. Coming in at just 3.9 in FPL and 4.8 in the Sky Sports game, Bertrand look guaranteed at least a couple of league fixtures and, depending on Cole’s rehabilitation period, may even benefit beyond his fellow full-back’s predicted time for return.

A few words of wisdom from the man that tried to give you Gervinho (but yall wouldn't listen) last week.

I think many of you may well need to dial-back your Theo expectations for the DGW, and probably Podolski as well. The fact is Arsenal play poorly with those two in the line-up, and I'm pretty sure Wenger and Bould know this. We have no real DM and those two DO NOT assert enough defensive pressure up field to justify their inconsistent, at best, offensive prospects. can't see Wenger playing Podolski at the wing and he's looked crocked all season; and Theo...well lets just say my grandmother has better work rate and ball retention stats than him. There's a word for players like him and it's called LAZY.

That being said I would need to see something special from him and that ain't happening this week, I happen to think he will not start the first DGW game and be a sub. I don't think Wenger can risk playing Walcott or Podolski given the tight race for fourth. And the foregone knowledge of what he can get from the two of them defensively.

He's won't lose a spot, there have been line-ups that have him dropped, but that would only be with Rosicky and Santi on wings and Gervinho at CF, and that won't happen with Jack out and with Wenger truly still having confidence in the young Frenchman. If I had Giroud I would keep him, because he is capable of a brace or a hattrick with the threesome of Santi, Tomas and Yao gervinho mixing it up.

I think the team has finally figured out that Gervinho was NT the problem. When he is skinning some one, don't stand around and watch, get into areas. And Giroud is most likely to take advantage IMHO.

        Yes and Yes

You could want someone but yet still not stamp them as an 100% starter, which he clearly wasn't leading up to the cotract conclusion. Clearly you don't think all of that was contractual games?

And clearly Walcott does not have the defensive workrate expected of a Winger and by Wenger (documented). What I am saying is don't be surprised if he doesn't feature both matches as a starter.

Clearly, but the point of my post was to give people, (outside of the punters) perspective on some of the POSSIBLE harsh realities of hanging on to, and possibly acquiring Walcott for the DGW. I only sited Gervinho as an example when multitudes thought that Wenger would just throw a "now SUPPOSEDLY healthy" Podolski into the line up. Without taking other intangibles into account.

And most importantly is how inserting players back into a line-up is more crucial at this juncture of the season than at a GW 20. I'm not here to s*^t in your cornflakes, I'm here to give you perspective. I know you well Couch Potato...this is what you do.

So, it is what it is.

People playing the wildcard next week can afford to do Bale > a good SGW player this week like Mata/Hazard/Gerrard.

There aren't many good DGW options in midfield with United rotation, Theo injured and Fellaini suspended. Cazorla is the obvious choice.

I was hoping for 9 doubles next week but need Fellaini to drop 0.1m.

I know the FISO crack the code is only a best estimate from the data available of price changes but is accurate pretty well all the time, but obviously when a player is around +/-100% and not much under or over then a rise or fall may not happen that night.

Such was the case last night with Fellaini being about -101 or -102% in this table and not falling.

I looked this morning as a matter of interest at Fantasy premier league price tracker to see what they had for Fellaini's transfer stats, and they were wildly inaccurate having him at just -48% and not even showing him as close to a drop, the stats not changing at all with each update. Obviously the site seems to have him stuck on a completely out of date transfer statistic.

Can we be sure he'll drop tonight, as according to the FISO table he's currently -109% (providing he doesn't gain transfers to bring him back that is)?

Risers are pretty much spot on. Flagging can cause FISO to get it wrong with fallers.

Normally not the case as the targets in the FISO table are adjusted accordingly, so once red flagged the target is doubled. I suspect the data is stuck for him on the price tracker as I suggested and hasn't taken into account latest days transfers

    1FT, 1.3m in bank.

    Begovic – Federici

    Evans – Davies – Clyne – Harte – Turner

    Mata – Bale – Cazorla – Michu – Puncheon

    RVP – Suarez – Berbatov

Will I be able to field XI?

Should I transfer out Bale for Silva (No DGW) /Gerrard (Got Suarez) /Hazard (Got Mata)? Or should I sort out my defence?

Some guidance would be much appreciated!

I would do Bale to Silva in your case.

      I'm strongly considering it now.

Well I went Bale >> SG .... so I`m hoping I haven`t given him the kiss of death .
Then maybe next GW 1 or 2 DGW players for Michu/Harte/Davies maybe ...

As far as I know the figure is the same for both red and yellow flags, source http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/crack-the-code-2012-13-the-fiso-guide-to-fpl-price-changes-t97027.html and what I gathered from Frank over at totalfpl

well its been borne out so far garg..... redflag gets the nti adjusted which hapenned with wallcott and bale yesterday who were both yellow then went red and the % changed......then a redflag only has to reach the 100% mark
yellows, the nti doesnt get changed, instead they have to reach 150.....

unless its changed with a new system....

No, but as I posted, you cant be sure it will if on or around plus or minus 100%, but hes already had over 3,600 transfers out by 9.15 am this morning and is now at -109% and will possibly be nearer -120% by 11.30 and although this figure will come back in the rest of the day I would expect him to be around -110% in the FISO table tonight and should therefore drop.
