While QPR and Reading are already relegated, Wigan’s recent revival means both tonight’s teams are far from safety. Sunderland are just two points above the Latics but after their chastening defeat at Villa Park this time last week, Paolo Di Canio’s man-management skills face a real test this evening. For Stoke, it seems the 40 point mark is still not enough – Tony Pulis will be buoyed by back-to-back wins as his side head to the Stadium of Light, though.

The hosts need to make do without the suspended Stephane Sessegnon due to a three-match ban and will rely on the misfiring Danny Graham to breach a Potters’ backline that has returned to form in recent matches, with a clean sheet in each of the last couple of Gameweeks. Once again, we’ve opened the Dugout Discussion for those seeking some real-time chat company while the matches unfold.

Sunderland make a couple of changes from the side that were hammered by Villa last Monday. Aside from the suspended Sessegnon, Phil Bardsley also drops out, with James McClean and Jack Colback drafted into the starting XI. While Colback looks set to replace Bardsley at right-back, it remains to be seen who will move to “the hole” behind Danny Graham, with Adam Johnson, Seb Larsson and Craig Gardner all candidates.

Marc Wilson returns at left-back for the Potters after recent hamstring trouble, with Andy Wilkinson dropping out through injury. Tony Pulis’ only other alteration is enforced, as Glenn Whelan is replaced by Dean Whitehead in central midfield. Charlie Adam and Jon Walters keep the flank roles, with Matt Etherington remaining on the bench.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

if you already have Theo, and you don't have Sturridge, then Coutinho is the obvious choice, but why do it now, unless a price rise makes it impossible?

I was 0.1 off doing Caz to Bale the other week, don't want something similar to happen in GW38. Michu is out, Coutinho has no games to come, not really much risk.

Lots...The odd thing about a great many of the best players is that many of them move/run in a peculiar way (is that called gait?)...That's to say the likes of Messi/Gazza/Ronaldo/RVP....and on and on...You can easily spot them even if you can't see their heads...strange that...must be part of what sets them apart.

Stoke fan here. No one likes us and we don't care.

    Except I do.

We have the best defensive record outside the top 6. Though I would accept that this comes at the expense of attacking at times, in particular away from home, there is little value in 'going for it' and getting mullered.

You call us gutless? Then what the hell are Fulham? They just conceded 4 at home to the worst side in the league in the last 5 years.

Face it, none of you like us as most of your sides get turned over at the Brit time and again because your millionaire perma tanned play actors don't fancy it north of the m25.

We don't take many fans to places like Sunderland because its a working class area, tickets are expensive for a game on tv and it's on a bank holiday Monday night at 8pm - how the hell do you get home. Great scheduling again by Sky...

If your take on attacking footba is the media obsession with Barcelona Tima Taka (soon to be German pressure) that is.

There was a time when solid defending was appreciated.

That said, there is a groundswell of discontent at the Brit. Especially when you look at the attacking instincts if teams like Southampton who came up this season.

Just hard for the board to overhaul a manager who got a mid table championship promoted to the prem and has kept them up for 4 years.

Our results suggest we are very successful against you at home.

If we went one-v-one on ability you would win 99% of the time.

I suggest you find a way to play the defensive, physical approach. perhaps its your one size fits all approach which lets you down - Chelsea, man city and united have all dealt with us much better to be totally honest.

(I actually admire arsenal and Wenger - dealt all I the animosity between the clubs after the shawcross/Ramsey incident).

I think our issue is that we have to try and win, from that point on the advantage is yours. If we sat back as well there would be no game and we cannot accept 0-0 as a good result. Its fustrating that we havent learnt to break flat ten man backlines.

But 0-0 against arsenal is a good result for Stoke and around 15 of the other teams in the league unfortunately.

Admittedly, this can make for a disgraceful spectacle for the neutral and a challenge for The top teams.

On the upside, all you have to do is score once and you win!

QPR is a casing point, the suggestion we were going to hammer them was ludicrous. QPR on a small pitch with nothing to lose were not going to let us get anything, lucky for us that Walcott was so quick to get the goal.

Stoke's achievement has been phenomenal, but I guess you can't argue that the way you play is destructive rather than creative.

If you are able to keep it going then it is fair enough, but I do feel as though your time in the top flight will be at an end come the end of next season. Enjoy it while it lasts.

also true, that game is potentially huge.

But a Wigan tomorrow moves them onto 38 points. Stoke have what 41? That's only 3 points with 6 still to play for.

I have Robles, who knows, maybe he'll go up for a last minute corner to try and score the goal that keeps Wigan in the PL

    Quarter Final tie:

    Me: Lukaku + 11pts

Him: Kompany, Mata, Haz (2pts if Haz doesn't play)

I think I lose 🙁 unless Kompany and Haz don't play, then I have a chance

      Richards Toure Lescott Kolarov

Could well be the City defence.

no team is too good to be relegated, West Ham proved that in 2001.

The league table never lies, if Saints finish in the bottom 3 they will have deserved it, if for no other reason than for assuming they were safe when they weren't and allowing performances to dip as a result.

The last time the Wearsiders won a Monday night league match was April 1, 2002 when Leicester City were beaten 2-1 at the Stadium of Light – 45,000 fans watching a brace from American midfielder Claudio Reyna overcome a strike from Paul Dickov.
Peter Reid was still manager of Sunderland, while Dave Bassett was in the opposition dug-out.
Martin Unreal posted this earlier , good post tbh.

Don't know why so many people are hating on stoke...
So what if their main attacking strategy is to defend?
So what if they turned down vinnie jones for being too soft?
So what if their coach wears stuff that Ali g threw away?
So what if their penalty taker scored more own goals than penalties?
So what if watching them play makes you want to put a pencil in your eyes?
A least they come for a beautiful vibrant city and its a pleasure to visit there on away games!
