[sbu_large_image] Great Expectations

His arrival at Liverpool in last January’s transfer window was afforded little fanfare or heightened levels of expectation. Certainly, there was no denying Philippe Coutinho’s talents but the young Brazilian’s record prior to moving to Merseyside hinted at a player who was far from the finished product:

With Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and fellow new-boy Daniel Sturridge all vying for our consideration, Coutinho was afforded time to settle as a regular under Brendan Rodgers but by the time the season ended, had done enough to suggest he could well be a major contender in the 2013/14 campaign.

Introduced towards the end of the Gameweek 26 home defeat by West Brom, Coutinho soon cemented a first-team place and started all 12 of Liverpool’s subsequent league matches. Utilised on the left in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3, he also operated on the flank when the Reds shifted to a 4-2-3-1 to allow Suarez to tuck in behind Sturridge, but Coutinho also had a brief central berth in the first-half of the Gameweek 37 win at Fulham when Rodgers trialled a 3-5-1-1 formation, with the Brazilian handed the role in “the hole”.

Key Factors

  • Coutinho has quickly shown he is tailor-made for Rodgers’ style of play. His pace, vision and trickery, allied with an improving eye for goal and impressive work ethic, is likely to see him start the vast majority of games next time out. Already, his starting role looks assured regardless of further summer acquisitions – incoming new boy Iago Aspas looks set to force Stewart Downing down the pecking order on the right, though the Spaniard may also vie with Sturridge for the central role if Suarez decides to leave.

  • Crucially, while the likes of Suarez, Sturridge and Aspas will be classified as forwards, Coutinho should maintain his midfielder classification in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – a fact that is likely to prove significant and boost his out of position prospects, with Rodgers expected to roll out a 4-3-3 more often than not.

  • Having started at 6.5 in FPL last time out, there’s no doubt a hike in price is on the cards but – given he has just 12 Premier League starts to his name and isn’t on spot-kicks, set-pieces or corners –Coutinho is likely to remain outside of the premium bracket. Gerrard’s return to form last term is set to threaten the double figure bracket, while a ceiling of 8.5 seems realistic for the youngster. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all expected to come in at 10.0 or over, Coutinho may well prove outstanding value and help free up budget for our three man front lines.

  • From just 12 starts, Coutinho produced three goals, seven assists and six bonus points – an average of 5.75 FPL points per start. Most impressively from a Fantasy perspective, he showed a real consistency, producing attacking returns in seven of his first XI appearances and the Brazilian also demonstrated his explosive capabilities with three sets of double figures to his name.

  • His performances in Suarez’s enforced absence through suspension bode particularly well for any would-be suitors. The Uruguayan is, of course, suspended for the opening six matches of 2013/14 and has made no secret of his intentions of sealing a move away from Merseyside this summer – Coutinho flourished in the four games without Suarez, producing a goal, four assists and four bonus points; an average of eight points per game.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

@ TW, OK just for you.

Metro, Mail, Telegraph, Sky, maybe the Mirror (depending) Phones 4U,

Guardian (Can't because they decided they're too posh for FF)

I may also consider others if they come to my attention.

Not the Sun because of the ridiculous transfer and scoring rules.

After Mark and the team analyzed my FPL team last season.

I shall try not to make a standard team, but base them on the individual scoring.
Cazorla was by far the highest scorer in Metro, for example, but I stuck with him in games where I should have had another mid.

In a lot of games the price differences on players often lead me to inlcude them so an extra big hitter can be fitted in.

Also the limited transfers in most games mean you must pick solid 38 game players where possible.
Even if they score slightly fewer points, you've saved the constant transfers.
You also need to allow for games not having auto-subs or any subs at all.

There is a lot of pre season planning.

Will all of guys be sincere for one moment, and tell me something.

How many of you have started posting serious, thought-provoking, long posts, because you had the temptation to be stickied?

I won't deny myself that it felt awesome when I got hulked yesterday. ANd in the end, it is not bad if we get more sensible posts because there is that incentive of getting stickied. Improves the quality of the comments on this site, actually.

It's nice to know that people respect what you post but I'm definitely not going out of my way to seek rep. I'm just posting as I always have done and if people like it then that's a nice feeling but if they don't, I'm certainly not going to dwell on it and change my opinions / style.

If people like what I write, it'll become more visible and that's great but I'm not going to try and become a better poster because of it.

        ^^ This.

Although it's nice that people are making an effort to raise their game, some of the attempts to get stickied are a bit... shall we say, obvious.

I don't think it helps that the quality threshold to get stickied doesn't seem to be particularly high.

I don't know if it's tge hulk effect saniul but I know I go to the bother of posting research driven posts now as people will actually see them and be able to discuss and give feedback on whether what I am looking into is right or wrong. The old system meant there was no point in writing a long researched stats badrd post as it was forgotten 2mins later and you got no feedback.

So in short no I don't post looking to be hulked but I do LOVE this new comment system

The rumour is true. Although as some of you know I'm a Saints season ticket holder I'm actually from Hull and I follow them closely too. I've never been more pessimistic around their chances of surviving in the Prem. Their only hope is Steve Bruce and his experience. If you pick a defender from the Tigers ensure they are third sub in every game.
        Hope this helps.

Other teams are also in the Europa league, yes.

I think I'm right in saying: Wigan, Spurs & Everton are in, although I reckon Everton may need to play a qualifier over 2 legs to secure their place in the group stage.

Yeah it'll be interesting. Small squad, like us and we struggled so I think it'll be tough for them but we shall see.

Wouldn't expect their qualifier to cause many problems if ours was anything to go by - Atromitos were not up to much.

              I'm not sure.

I'm losing faith in the rep system.

It has no transparency to the users, could well be fake, just an attempt to improve the quality of posts.

Plus, it seems the more I try, the less people like me 🙁

Do you think it would be better if there was a leaderboard?

I like the fake aspect, interesting concept. I guess if nobody changes rep then you would be right & things would go back to before.

Be yourself RonH, you are a smart & good poster with some humour thrown in. 🙂

It's not fake but I don't want users to concern themselves with rep. If we made it visible, it would be a bigger factor. As it is, it's a mechanism for allowing consistently good posters to have more of a say in what's good and bad on the site. Some will buy into that, some won't and that's cool.

Folk just need to relax and forget the rep and voting trappings a bit - the biggest role it's playing is giving me the tools to monitor and manage the community better and I really needed those.

And now the bap system is using stats that FFS collect live from games. I like to think the 'Stock Check' articles will be replaced with a Baps Predictions article.

Another try-hard post 😉 On the subject of form versus fixtures, I took a brute force approach. I gathered up the all the gameweek scores from the top 25 scoring mids and forwards and analysed them for fixture difficulty (based on shots conceded in the box by opposing team all season) and for the player's form, based on PPG for the preceding 4 games. That's just short of 1000 data points to go at.

Fixture difficulty - Average gameweek score

    1 5.19
    2 4.08
    3 3.91
    4 3.51

    Form - Average gameweek score
    1 4.33
    2 4.71
    3 4.77
    4 5.54

Fixture ease + form - Average gameweek score
    2 2.57
    3 3.52
    4 3.89
    5 4.56
    6 5.14
    7 5.13
    8 6.1

What all this shows is hardly news to us. Average scores for individual players do tend to be higher against poorer teams, and do tend to be higher when players have been scoring well in the previous few weeks. And, unsurprisingly, scores are highest at the confluence of the two.

So, not exactly mind-blowing, but I'd been starting to doubt the importance of fixtures and it's nice to have beliefs confirmed by big fat data. No upvotes please.

Sorry, the formatting didn't come out quite right. I divided the fixture difficulties into 4 brackets and listed the average gameweek score next to each bracket. Should be more like this:

        Fixture difficulty
        1 : 5.19
        2 : 4.08
        3 : 3.91
        4 : 3.51

        and so on ...
