Snapped up from Olympiakos towards the end of last year’s summer transfer window, Kevin Mirallas arrived at Everton on the back of an eye-catching campaign. With his final season in Greece harvesting 20 goals from 25 league games, the Belgian looked a canny acquisition by David Moyes but a role on the Toffees right flank, combined with an ongoing hamstring complaint, limited his Fantasy potential.

His classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game hardly helped either. While Marouane Fellaini benefitted from his advanced central berth behind a lone forward, Mirallas suffered as a reverse out of position performer – despite being stuck on the wing in Moyes’ preferred 4-4-1-1 system, he chipped in with six goals, five assists and 13 bonus points from 24 starts. With Moyes taking up the reins at Manchester United, however, the installation of Roberto Martinez to the Goodison hotseat may be set to promote Mirallas as a significant Fantasy performer for the season ahead.

Key Factors

  • Martinez’s penchant for a 3-4-3 formation seems tailor-made for Mirallas. With the former Wigan boss expected to field Seamus Coleman on the right of the midfield four, the Belgian looks likely to be shifted further forward, affording him greater license to thrive as an attacking prospect. While such a system would diminish Fellaini’s potential, with a move to central midfield on the cards, Mirallas should rise in the Fantasy pecking order under Martinez’s guidance.

  • Last season’s spot on the flank should now benefit Mirallas. A midfield classification across the Fantasy games may apply, affording us a real out of position prospect with a keen eye for goal. Price-wise, his debut campaign suggests a drop from last term’s initial 7.5 price tag could be on offer – Fellaini and Steven Pienaar both started the previous campaign at 6.5 and, given that Mirallas ultimately returned a total of 96 points, such a cost would be a fair reflection of his contribution last time out.

  • The hamstring issue which hampered his game time now finally seem to be behind him. Mirallas limped out of the Gameweek 11 clash with Sunderland after less than half an hour and lasted just 45 minutes of the Gameweek 16 home match with Tottenham before succumbing to the same problem. Moyes courted caution with the problem, easing him back into the Toffees first-team, but a fully-fit Mirallas started each of his side’s last 11 league games and proved an increasingly instrumental figure for the Merseysiders.

  • Further analysis of Mirallas’ form highlights a definite upturn in performance over those final few months of the season. Devoid of injury and finally accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, he produced five goals, an assist and 13 bonus points over those final 11 fixtures, compared to a single goal and four assists across his first 16 appearances. Even if – as some suspect – Martinez begins with last season’s formation until the players get to grips with his tactics, Mirallas’ potential still looks to be strong.

  • The opening fixture list has been relatively kind to Martinez’s troops. Three of their first four home games hold plenty appeal (WBA, NEW, HUL) and with trips to Norwich and Cardiff also on their agenda, Everton face just two of last season’s top eight in the first eight Gameweeks, with a home game against Chelsea and visit to City in Gameweeks 4 and 7 respectively.

    Evening Lads,

Some more three way rotations I've found for anyone interested.

    Cheers πŸ™‚

    Southampton/Stoke/WestHam

    First 7

    CAR/CPL/STK/WHM/EVE/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    WBA/FUL/AVL/HUL/SUN/FUL/CAR/CHE/SUN/AVL/car/WBA

Analysis: 3 promoted side games in the first 7 along with Stoke and West Ham who were 1st and 2nd in terms of toothless away from home last affords this trio a very good start. Longevity is good but does include a top four game but in general is good enough. Possible negative is West Ham and Stoke could well be 5mil. Wilson + Demel πŸ˜‰

    Southampton/WestBrom/WestHam

    First 7

    CAR/SUN/STK/WHM/SUN/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    stk/FUL/CPL/HUL/AVL/FUL/AVL/NOR/SUN/HUL/car/WBA

Analysis: 2 promoted sides, Stoke and West Ham like the previous rotation and Sunderland twice in the first seven. Sunderland could be a side in trouble and form could dip when you consider the difficult start they have been given. Longevity is very good with Hull and Villa arriving twice to the rotation.

    Cardiff/Southampton/Stoke

    First 7

    wba/CPL/EVE/WHM/TOT/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    WBA/FUL/SOT/HUL/SUN/ARS/CAR/cpl/WBA/AVL/SOT/SUN

Analysis: So so first seven however the next 12 is very good with only Arsenal being a hiccup in the rotation. This rotation has a potential 4mil player involved (Cardiff)

    Cardiff/Newcastle/Southampton

    First 7

    wba/WHM/FUL/WHM/HUL/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    LIV/FUL/SWA/HUL/NOR/WBA/AVL/cpl/SOT/cpl/STK/SUN

Analysis: 2 Promoted sides and West Ham twice provides a very good first 7. Next 12 is very good if you don't mind an away game or two involved in your rotation. Negative is Newcastle may come in at 5mil.

    AstonVilla/Stoke/WestBrom

    First 7

    SOT/CPL/SWA/NEW/SUN/NOR/hul

    Next 12

    WBA/EVE/CPL/CAR/AVL/SUN/CAR/NOR/hul/HUL/CPL/SWA

Analysis: This rotation is in my opinion the best when looking at the whole 19. It plays the promoted sides 8 times for example. It also includes Villa so anyone wanting to have Lowton, this is your rotation πŸ™‚

Yeah, I was surprised at how fast you did it. Always knew you couldn't be trusted πŸ˜‰

Anyway, you need to change the colour from rotation to no rotation (or vice versa) on the following:

          Arsenal tab - Cardiff GW9
          Palace tab - Chelsea GW16
          Everton tab - Hull GW7
Spurs tab - Man City GW20

No problem, on my version I added to each tab how many games each team doesn't rotate. Once done I checked between tabs for any discrepancies and came across these.

              Thanks for putting it together.

There's a few that you say surely not to yourself but then you look at the season tables stats and you can't argue with them. Man City attacking away is an example of that for me. Tempted to either make 2011/12 season stats a bit more relevant or just increase their form to 1.1.

                The Season Ticker?

Add in the config values on the "Tinker with your Ticker" tab and watch the season ticker and fixture difficulty come alive πŸ™‚

Once you get an idea of it you can start editing the value more towards your opinions.

Rotation finder is a simple "gold" rotate, "blue" don't for home and away rotations.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

Are you a dullard, maverick or dullardinho?

Dullard – The sensible fantasy football manager, who makes carefully calculated moves based on form, fixtures and statistical analysis. This manager will most likely captain RVP or Bale and will almost always grab a top 10,000 finish in FPL. If this manager were a snooker player they’d be Steve Davis.

Maverick – The shoots from the hip fantasy football manager who lives life on the edge and always trusts ‘gut feeling’ when making decisions. If this manager was a film character they’d be Sgt Riggs, played by Mel Gibson in the Lethal Weapon movies. This manager will probably finish outside the top 10,000.

Dullardinho – The sensible fantasy football manager who likes the odd flutter. Their in built sense of flair enables them to know exactly the right time to make that all important cheeky gamble amongst their usual safe choices. This manager has the potential to be crowned overall winner. If this manager were a musician they’d be David Bowie.

(This hot topic follows on from some excellent discussions during the dead zone last night on luck vs skill, posted by Acquafresca, Philathes’s ponderings on what we can learn from failure and Triggerlips asking what makes a great FPL player. See the hot topics widget on the right hand side to look at those discussions in full)

Used to be more of a maverick, now more dullardinho, although this past season I tried not to have any rigid strategic rules.

Also I'm more of a dullard when chasing and more maverick once I'm in the top 10k/winning my minileagues.

      I'd have to say Dullardinho.

Dullard because I often choose the obvious players. Maverick because I don't mind the odd point hit or captaincy punt.

Does HomeCrowd have any built-in defence mechanisms?

We all know that it's very quiet at the moment and people have time to think about what they are posting, whether it be Fixture vs Form or Luck vs Skill.

However, that will not always be the case when the FPL season is up and running.

HC has introduced many changes and we can all argue if they are good or bad but how will HC cope with the endless (and I do mean endless) barrage of last minute lurking, no grav posters who only come on here before the GW deadline posting things like "Player X or Player Z?".

I'd like to see this this useless, redundant section of posters be dealt with for two reasons:

    1) Paying/regular members will have to put up with selfish, page filling no-names whilst their own efforts to help each other will be drowned out..

    2) Potential new members will see pages of rubbish posts flying by and going unanswered or being dealt with in a sarcastic or unfriendly way.

    Any ideas?

You can argue that this "limited" time slot just before a GW deadline is only a small part of the total GW chat but it is, quite often, the most crucial period.

It's easy to ignore CERTAIN members.

But it's not about ignoring them. It's about finding the worthwhile posts in between all the rubbish and the pages being filled up with spam.

I doubt the lurkers will pay any attention to the forum rules and guidelines.

isn't that what sticky comments and hot topics are for? as well as up voting so that you can sort by discussion rating? that's the entire point of homecrowd and the new features they added in! so you can find the good stuff amidst the RMT's

      1) Paying/regular members can just sort by rating instead of by date.

I agree, HC will have to pass the RMT test and I don't yet know whether it will. But it can't do any worse than the previous comments system.

        1) Of course but not every RMT ot Captain choice will be downvoted. The regular chat and spam will mostly have a 0 rep. That is hard to filter.

I was just wondering if it had been given any thought, that's all. That sort of traffic could kill the site just before GW1.

I'm not even sure RMTs *should* be downvoted. But hopefully the more interesting stuff will be upvoted.

Last season, on the friday before GW1, I was happy with my own team but I came on to see the buzz. It was absolutely mental. I tried to help out some of the lonely RMT-ers but it was something like 5 mins per page of comments. It was slightly exhilarating for a little while but I had to give up and log off fairly quickly it just wasn't worth it. Every single answer I gave was on an outdated page by the time I'd posted it.

I get that the site as a whole would value RMTs as a way of growing community numbers, but there seem to be more than a few individual posters who do not share this view.

Just to throw this out as an idea, how about adding the word 'RMT' to the spam filter list, but in such a way so that each user can switch this on or off from their profile page? If anyone posted the full wording 'Rate My Team' or something similar as a way of getting round the filter, they can legitimately be downvoted.

We know that TM and I don't have the answer.

Point is, the last minute spam from lurkers will add to the volume of posts and even useful posts which may warrant a +1 will be already on the last page before people have a chance to see it.

Such a lot of them are of the form "player X or player Y? pls hlp"

So the answer could be a hot topic for all the common pairs with a stock answer for each and mods ruthlessly removing any posts asking for those. Could work but might alienate new users.

More moderation for starters. Splits the community. Both sections would end up RMT zones anyway imo.

              - So have more moderators
              - Not really, people could post in both areas, and how is it that every other forum and discussion board on the internet can cope?
              - Not if you made it a rule that RMTs should only be posted in one place. The downvoting, moderating and people getting used to the new rule would do the rest.

Its a good set of questions SABG. The aim of the Home Crowd tools is precisely to make the comment boards a more pleasant place when it becomes busy.

We will continue to hot topic and sticky threads that are interesting...sorting by sticky or hot topic will cut out alot of the posts like RMTs that some people don't want to see.

We will also moderate any spam RMTers. If they've posted it once and no one responds and the mod team see them continually repost the duplicates will be removed.

The other point that is important is that RMTs are a valued part of this site. My first post was a RMT, same with many others on here. Sharing advice is what makes the comment section so good. As is suggested though it is also important to give and receive. If someone just posts RMTs and doesn't offer advice in return then I'm sure they will be ignored. What we don't want to see is people being rude or abusing voting for people simply for asking. Anything that is rude or deliberately offensive to another poster will be moderated.

I for one will encourage grav and link less first time RMTers to join in the community more, offer advice as well, get a grav and link up etc.

Another point about RMTs is that some can be really good reads. Perhaps someone will find a great team for gwk 1 with both RVP and Bale that is up for discussion or is helpful.

All good advice but I would like to point out that I wasn't having a go at RMT's. I can see people voting them down just because and that's not what the voting system is for.

My point was more directed at the gravless lurkers who only come on at 11.00am and post stuff like "Bench/Captain Player X or Player Z?".

That's what fills the pages and drowns out the good stuff.

The aim is to create the reverse, that the hot topics and stickies will drown out the posts that are unpopular. If their post is unpopular then people should ignore it and not make it even longer by criticising.

Interesting point, Sporting - The last thing I would want is for the site to become elitist, but I don't begrudge people who see 'the Gravless' as a nuisance they can do without. Maybe a personal setting to remove all threads started by the Gravless from your own view, as well as their replies, might be possible. Ask Ed - he's a Diva. But you may be missing out on some useful nuggets.

I think it's difficult to organise the pre deadline chaos because of the sheer volume. And the majority of it is like you say RMT's or straw polls from Gravless lurkers.

The regulars will be smart enough to ask these questions during the week so it's up to you if you want to reply to a bunch of people who generally wouldn't respond to a similar post themselves.

I don't log in on a Saturday morning for the discussion anyway. The articles are the main reason to come on at that time.

HC seems a good thing but at the same time I don't think every discussion has to start with a 10 paragraph philosophical post.

just read through all this discussion, honestly this should be a hot topic!

I see what you're saying sporting that it's the sheer number of posts that is the problem. but honestly I think the simple solution is to avoid the site during that hectic last hour or so. unless you are posting in response to RMT's or player A vs player B, or you are making those posts yourself, it's best to avoid imo. it's virtually impossible to have a proper conversation during that time period so why even bother? wait and come back 1.5-2hrs later and it'll be (a bit) better.

    FORM Vs FIXTURES

Have been looking back through my player histories looking for correlations between form and fixtures. Its not a compehensive survey (im too lazy) but it looks to me from a practical point of view that the following are true

1).For defences fixtures are far more important than form
2)For midfielders and forwards form is more important than fixtures.

There is a slight correlation between attacking points and fixtures ,however I would not consider removing an on form attacker simply because a few fixtures look tricky, its highly debatable that it would be worth a transfer.

Similarly it would not be worth bringing in an out of form attacker simply because of a few easy fixtures. Those of us who bought in and captained Aguero for thr Reading game can testify to that.

I thought about attempting a more scientific survey, however it not straightforward ,firstly you need to define “in form” and “ easy “fixture.
It is further complicated in that individual players vary, some play better against good opposition, others worse

Good point, which is another reason to choose them based on fixtures,
With the top defenders like Baines then individual form worth considering but with the budget options its mainly clean sheet points your after

Firstly, thanks for initiating so many discussions over the past few days. It's been a very intriguing weekend and it helped pass the time at home over the weekend (very hazy outside so I'm afraid to step out of my abode).

I'd agree with the attackers and form, especially FPL-wise. I'd like to contribute to the "definition of form" argument firstly by stating that there have been studies that have been agreed confirming that goals are quite correlated to shots (on target or not) taken in the box. Hopefully this would be a good starting point for most to look out for, because intuitively looking at players has a weakness of letting a lot of "consistent performers" slip through the cracks.

With defenders, I'd like to advocate that it's more of a mixture of form and fixture rather than fixtures alone. Defending styles do come into play, and what people MIGHT not realise is that there are 2 types of defenses among the popular defenses: "Good but overworked", and "Avoiding the issue", as commonly used by Experimental361. Last team's early season form defences, Stoke and West Ham, were "good but overworked" defenses, and on a personal level I'd be looking out for defenses like these in picking up "the next Bego or Jussi".

Hopefully I've not rambled too much, but my point here is that I'd like to point out that there are certain trends that we can look out for (based on last season's data) to identify form attackers or defenders. Fixtures are probably best used OFFENSIVELY when your attacker is in form, and you've got good fixtures lined up. Cap material. Fixtures are used best DEFENSIVELY imo when you don't really have a clue of who's in form yet, and you are trying to maximise CS potential.

Haha didn't expect you to bite.

"Good but overworked" refers to a defence that takes a lot of shots in the box to actually concede a goal, such as Stoke. You'd define them as "resolute" but because of the way they defend, they allow their opponents to take so many shots anyway, so once in a while they do concede a goal or two (or lots if their opponents happen to be on fire or they're really unlucky. Ask Jonny Walters when Stoke let in 4 against Chelsea). In most cases, they hardly concede because they're fundamentally good.

"Avoiding the issue" is the exact opposite. They hardly face shots (maybe due to a high-line defense + a well worked offside trap) but when they DO face shots, they take very little against them to concede. Every other mid-tier defense BAR West Ham and Stoke (and probably Norwich late season) would probably be in this category. In fact, some of the elite defenses would be in this category as well (as you'd expect their defenders to be better in tackling) but due to errors (such as Arsenal at home) they take very few shots conceded to actually concede a goal.

Note that these patterns do change over time due to injuries, new signings etc. and unique playstyles (such as Swansea playing 2 fullbacks on the right to counter Everton's left flank) so it's up to us to identify what combination of mentality, defending style and ability allows us to classify these defenses, and hence adjust our investment accordingly.

If fpl awarded points for clearances, blocks etc then the style of defending might be important, but all we really care about is if they keep a clean sheet or not
They very difficult to predict , all you can do is try and put the odds slightly more in your favour by picking defenders with easier fixtures.

true but if you dig deeper you can get a better idea of if they'll keep a cs in a given gw. if you look at why they keep a cs and compare it to the attacking style of the team they are playing paired with H/A you get a good idea of how it'll turn out.

like if an "avoiding the issue" type defense is playing a team that creates a lot of chances, they are likely to concede, whereas a "Good but overworked" might not as they normally allow a lot of shots and still keep a cs

I understand your argument , in that a team which has few shots against because of a good offside trap concedes when it fails. Therefore in theory is more likely to concede when playing teams that are good at beating the offside trap.

In practice however , if that team is Villa and they are playing Man u .Ars man c .chelsea liverpool or tottenham then they are staying firmly on my bench, i couldnt care how they concede

of course, playing villa against one of them would be a bit mental.

but it might help you decide if you should play Wilson against Everton or Debuchy against Villa. I picked random sides so maybe not the best example but my point is more when you're looking at mid and upper-mid table sides

of course. I'm just saying that IF you wanted to look into this in more detail, you could. for example the cs odds might not really take into account that a certain defense struggles against players with pace whereas another struggles against a strong/powerful player. my point is simply that you can analyze these things in more detail. though obviously you could do well without that additional analysis

      Totally agree.

I would add, though, that for me fixtures can be more important than form when picking a fifth mid or third striker, particularly at the start of the season (I realise there is no real form at this point) and when wildcarding.

The reason being that I might need to call on them on weeks 2,5 and 6 after bringing them in and can't possibly know what their form will be at that point. As I try to avoid hits whenever possible and don't want to use a free on a squad player my best chance of increasing that players contribution in those specific weeks is to use fixtures as a guide.

If your 5th mid or 3rd striker will be spending most of his matches on the bench and you do not want to waste a transfer on replacing him, then price, form and being nailed on are more important than fixtures. Anichebe was an ideal 8th attacking player in the second half of last season for this reason. If however you intend to rotate your 5th mid with your 4th mid or 3rd striker then their fixtures are more important.

Hey Triggerlips. I did this analysis a little while back. Looking at form and fixtures based on data from all 38 gameweeks for the top 25 scoring mids and forwards last season.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/14/great-expectations-philippe-coutinho/?hc_page=2&hc_refresh=133#hc_comment_4972141

For want of better data, I resorted to defining form by Points Per Game for the previous 4 gameweeks. Simplistic and yet it does seem to work as a reasonable proxy for form. The average points players do seem well correlated with their previous points.

This analysis confirms what I suspected and justifies the general approach of picking keepers and defenders based on fixtures, hence planning ahead with a rotation strategy, but planning ahead not being quite as important when it comes to attack, where short-term form, and also long-term class - RVP, Bale, Mata, Michu, being more important.

What I take from Berbagod's point is that certain keepers will get a lot more save points, regardless of opposition.

I guess defensive fixtures and offensive form will also come into conflict from time to time, so you may want to reconsider playing your defenders, say at home to Villa if Benteke is in form.

Well that's the whole point of a rotation strategy really: To have your defs playing favourable fixtures as much as possible (in order to minimise transfers there) while going with the form attackers, using the majority of your transfers there.

What you took is also something people wouldn't pick up, good spot there. It is true that defenses that allow lots of shots will probably allow those keepers to get more save points. We just have to be careful, because among keepers that make a lot of saves, there are those that are protected by their defense more often (Stoke, West Ham etc.) and those who get lots of saves but concede 4 goals anyway (Wigan, Reading last season)

Your final point is perhaps the one least talked about: Clashes of defence against attack will happen, especially if you stick to the same back 5 over 19 weeks. Only 2 ways around it, not sure which way you use though.

Really good point. I think I've fallen into the trap on many occasions before of putting fixtures before form for ALL areas of my team when in fact it's a combination for defensive assets of form and fixtures, whereas for attacking assets form takes precedence with fixtures being a bonus if favourable.

Bit of a penny drop moment this - you have my 'up vote'!!

Yes if the form striker or midfielder has the fixture also, then this is a bonus.....this then is likely combination to be the deciding factor for a good captain pick πŸ™‚

Yes personally I think form makes strikers fixture proof.

Quality strikers showing 'good form' are likely to score against anyone, especially the past few seasons when the top teams have been conceding goals as they play more a expansive attacking football.

I also agree with your two quoted points below. These are the tactics I will most likely be going with again this coming season as I adopted them last season and I stuck with them each GW right until the end.

'1).For defences fixtures are far more important than form
2)For midfielders and forwards form is more important than fixtures'.

Though fixtures for defences are not always 'far more important than form' if the defenders for example are in the Baines, Enrique etc category. If these type of defenders are showing 'good form' then they are 'fixture proof' also imo as they have the potential to produce attacking returns each GW.

            1 bad game..

First goal: Good original save, good finish by Dante
Second: Neymar fantastic strick, he just didn't see it.
3rd: Fred just blast's it. No mistake by Bufffon
4th: Decent save, defence didn't react.

            I disagree with your comment...
He's the most experienced keeper out there with Casillas. It's only a year loan so rather have him than neuer because of what he would leave behind.

it was meant to be, (written like a dialogue)

You: Not based on his last game
Me: One bad game doesn't define a keeper. And his game wasn't that bad. (Defends the 4 goals)
You: True, your a genius duke, how are you so cool
Me: My secret, I use old spice deodorant.

And I get your point he's definitely not at his peak and reaching his twilight year's, but on a year loan he would add more to super scz's development than neuer would and he is still a top top keeper.

How many games has Fletcher played in the last 2 seasons? I think he's finished. Maybe he'll play again but I suspect he'll only see as many minutes as the likes of Owen and Hargreaves have in recent years. Different problem for Fletcher of course but it doesn't seem like he'll play regularly again.

They both hog penalties, free-kicks & corners. Bale more so.

They were both dominant as far as their teams attack was concerned last season. Bale more so.

Bale is improving whilst RVP is 30+

Bale ended the season in stunning form RVP dipped in second half relying on offside goals etc.

In short, I don't understand your conclusion.

Can it get any simpler than PPG? This season it was:

              RVP – 6.9

              Bale – 7.5

And Bale is young and improving, RVP is not.

Now, now, let's not let that ruin the story... πŸ˜€

It was 15-9 in favour of RVP.

So technically (not counting the 9 goals scored when Bale didn't play – not sure when the united goals were scored when RVP was on the bench)

          RVP – 41/86 = 48%

          Bale – 30/57 = 53%

That wasn't what you said. He scored 5 less goals than RVP this season and gets an extra point for each of them. Add to that the 5 extra appearances RVP made...

Not to mention the +/- 10 points Bale will get for CSs...

Haha I don't know. At the moment we're very torn. I'm more of a fan of analysing current data we have, while TW's about coming up with rotations and stuff. Can't seem to keep up with him >.<

                    :D.

I really enjoy making rotations, I find it fun coming up with new combinations. though it's frustrating to try to work one out only to look at it together and see it's horrendous.

don't worry Berba you've got over a week to catch up while i'm on vacation. as long as you plug away at it each day I reckon you'll be caught up by the time I get back.

ah yes prices would be great. would help me in terms of making rotations too because i'll know which defenses to focus on (because they're undervalued) and which to mostly ignore (because they're overvalued)

Mmm I guess. I'm just constantly thinking about how to make the data more presentable. Got a feeling that when more rotations pop up, lots of ideas and good rotations will be lost. Might have to do a summary (in a hidden tab maybe for private use) or a form for people to download for their "favourite rotations" and profiles to go with it, based on Saniul's data or something.

Rotations are fun I guess. I just find it impractical that we'll stick to the same back 5 for 19 weeks. IMO anyway.

                        1) I think the index will greatly help
                        2) we should give some sort of a color code based on when it's viable as in all 19 weeks or early on or later on
                        3) we might wanna find a way to highlight say the top 3 or 4 of each type of rotation.

but yes I agree we need to figure out organization of some sort

I'm currently pondering Everton's defence. Is Martinez worse defensively than Moyes because of their tactics or because (for example) Baines is a better defender than Figueroa? Everton fullbacks are looking enticing, but if they keep fewer clean sheets ...

      I looked into this.

Looking at stats it seems the major reason for Wigan conceded above the norm last season was "errors leading to goals", aka individual muck ups.

Both shots conceded and chances conceded were about normal for a prem team.

Did anyone happen to see Frank Lampard on Sunday Brunch this morning talking about his new literary tour de force that his is range of childrens' books?

What a genius! "Frankie's Magic Football" is the series name. How many long nights must he have tried to construct this original and detailed world while Christine fondled his parts in bed??

OK, hmmm, I need a main character.....how about....eh......Frank!.....Yes, that will do!. And now, I just need something that Frank does, but with maybe with a twist of something interesting. Eh.....maybe Frank's shorts......? Nah, thats a bit boring.....how about Frank's magic football! Yes!

BUT, his standing as a national footballing hero will mean that many kids will be attracted to reading his sub-standard literature, and that many budding, respectable authors will be ignored.

And then, in the middle of a key game against Liverpool, Frankie's magic football came to Frankie about ten yards outside of the Liverpool 18 yard box, and Frankie thought "I'd better maybe pass this", but the magic ball said "don't listen to that sh*t Frankie....you hit this as hard as you can"

And do you know what happened then children? Frank closed his eyes and hit it as hard as he could and then that magic ball took a massive deflection off Essien's arse, and then it flew into the top corner and then James Terrance wanted to say something like "F*&$ you you dirty Spanish waiter!" but then Frank's editor said that wasn't politically correct so everyone forgot all about it

Mid season it seems to get the players to lift but starting a new season can go either way. The Everton players have been used to Moyes for years. Same could occur with Man Utd. Plenty here have written them off already.

    LUCK vs SKILL vs MATHS

Regarding the recent luck vs skill debate: a couple of weeks ago I was in a railway station newsagent's browsing the magazines, and I saw what I think was the special mathematics edition for Spektrum der Wissenschaft 12/2 (I haven't been able to find it online however, so I suspect it might have been a similar but different German magazine, it was certainly the 12/2 edition though). Its subject was the mathematics of gambling and sports. I would surely have bought it if it hadn't cost 10e, and if I didn't have a weakness for buying five magazines at once and then not having time to read them, which I am trying to curb.

The relevance of this magazine to the luck vs skill debate is that it contained an article on how much impact luck has on the outcome of football matches. From my memory of flicking through it, I think it suggested it was something in the order of 50%. If that is the case, that would suggest that fantasy football is also significantly down to luck.

Like I said, I haven't been able to find this magazine online, but I did find this book review:
    http://www.spektrum.de/alias/der-perfekte-tipp/der-ball-ist-rund/1185404

of an entire book dedicated to football statistics. Two conclusions noted in the review are that 36% of a team's points total at the end of the season is the result of chance, and that the outcome of any one game is 86% down to chance, although the context of what precisely the author meant by that is missing.

I suspect some of the German-speaking forum members might already be familiar with this book, or that the author's conclusions may well have been published in a more digestible form elsewhere, but if anyone is interested I can translate the whole book review (provided I have enough spare time this week).

    Morning regulars

    1. What's the estimate for prices to come out - mid july?
    2. Which three players you expect to be first names in your squad this year?
I think Bale, Rvp and Hazard atm, but Aguero and Higuain (if/when he comes) are really tempting
    3. Gangster Squad - just watch or buy?

    Thanks

        Thanks guys.

I'm happy for my team if I just get Bale, Hazard/Mata for midfield and strikerforce of Rvp, Aguero, Mata πŸ˜‰

      1. Yep.

      2. Bale, RVP and two STH defenders...for the whole season.

      3. Not seen it. Django/Silver Linings Playbook/Flight were all good.

Hell yeah. Will be 4 mill and have a decent start, look solid in defence last 10 games last season.

Shaw & Clyne likely to be 4.5 imo.

might be best to go with one def and Boruk, easier to bench than two defenders
