Swansea City dipped into the summer transfer market for the second time earlier this week with the capture of centre-half Jordi Amat from Espanyol. The 21-year-old signs up at the Liberty on a four-year deal for a fee in the region of £2.5m and joins compatriot Jose Canas at the club, as Michael Laudrup continues to raid the Spanish top-flight following the success of Michu, Chico and Jonathan de Guzman last time around.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Amat – who is believed to have turned down a number of offers in order to sign up at the Liberty – cited the club’s possession-based playing style as key to his decision:

“I watched Swansea last season – what the club achieved was incredible. To finish in the top half of the Premier League and win a trophy too is a massive achievement. In Spain, Swansea are very famous now. They talk a lot about the club and how they have become a successful team in the Premier League with an attractive style of play. So to be a part of the team is a big moment for me. The club has a great set-up – the stadium is lovely and I know it’s full every game, and I can’t wait to run out in front of the supporters for the first time.”

The History

A product of the Espanyol youth system, Amat’s career began with the club’s B team in the Spanish third division back in 2009-10. After making 17 appearances he was fast-tracked to the first-team towards the end of the season and featured six times. The following campaign saw the centre-half nail down a regular role, turning out on 26 occasions, but he fell out of favour in 2011/12 and featured in just nine league games.

Farmed out on loan to Michu’s old club Rayo Vallecano last year, Amat scored once in 27 La Liga matches – footage of his 50-yard wonder strike is doing the rounds – and helping his side to an eighth place finish. The centre-half has turned out for his country at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and was part of the Spain side that finished third at the Under 17 World Cup in 2009 along with the likes of United’s David De Gea.

The Prospects

The Swans Capital One Cup success and subsequent Europa League duties means Laudrup requires a greater depth to his squad next time round. With a more demanding schedule to contend with, it remains to be seen whether Amat has been purchased as a back-up to Chico and Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four, with the possibility of game time only arriving through rest and rotation – although the latter missed just one league game all season, Chico was sidelined for 12 league matches through injury, with Laudrup forced to hand Garry Monk 10 starts as a result.

There’s no doubt that Williams’ future will play a major part in Amat’s prospects for the season ahead. With Liverpool and Arsenal continuing to be linked with a move for his services, the former’s possible departure would be a huge boost for the new boy’s prospects, though it would be a big call from Laudrup to let Williams go without further adding to his backline, given Amat’s relative youth and Chico’s propensity for picking up injury.

In spite of the silverware and ninth place finish in Laudrup’s debut season at the helm, Swansea failed to replicate the defensive consistency produced under Brendan Rodgers in 2011/12. Although they conceded the same number of goals overall (51), the clean sheets dropped from 14 down to nine and with their opponents scoring more than once in eight of the last 10 Gameweeks, the Welsh outfit tailed off significantly after their top-flight safety was secured somewhat earlier than anticipated.

Given their defensive record, Swansea’s main defensive assets are likely to be priced around the 5.0 mark once again in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Laudrup’s occasional use of Angel Rangel on the right of midfield is likely to ensure the Spaniard remains the most appealing defensive option and although there’s hope that Neil Taylor will come in at 4.5 after missing most of the season through injury, there’s every chance Laudrup could rotate him and Ben Davies at left-back, thus negating both their Fantasy potential. With Michel Vorm set to drop from last year’s 5.5, there are other more appealing options that Amat at the Liberty right now – an initial price of 4.5, followed by a move away for Williams, seems to be his only way of turning our heads.

Certainly, the opening few fixtures give us time to assess the situation from afar. With Laudrup’s side set to face United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks, few will fancy their chances of defensive returns, with only trips to West Brom and Palace offering any appeal. From Gameweek 8 onwards, though, the schedule brightens considerably and many will be looking to invest in the Welsh outfit ahead of a run of five home games (SUN, WHM STO, NEW, HUL) and a trip to Cardiff in the following eight – by then, Amat’s prospects and Laudrup’s possible rotation intentions will hopefully be a little clearer and allow us to make our trades with a greater degree of certainty.

  1. Predicting clean sheets.

    Evening DZers.

I've been looking at some more figures for clean sheets for the lesser lights in the division.

Part 1 of the analysis is here if you've not seen it: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/26/the-community-round-up-2/?hc_page=2&hc_refresh=485#hc_comment_5002242

    THEORY
So last time out I came to the conclusion that promoted teams didn't seem to display any immediate propensity to deliver clean sheets. In fact it was the second half of the season at home where they showed the best returns.

This time I wanted to look into the teams I noticed that dramatically improved their clean sheet quantity from season to season, which was 40% of the teams finishing 12th-17th the previous season. That 40% ended up in the top half of the table for clean sheets the next year. I guessed that perhaps having had a poor season or a brush with relegation, maybe they concentrated more into their on defence the next season.

So it is possible to identify these teams?

    TEST
The test I tried was to see how early in the season the improving teams delivered clean sheets vs those that ended up in the lower half of the league for clean sheets.

I hoped that if they showed signs of improving early then there would be time to get their players if we've made defensive choices that we are suddenly not so sure about.

    TEAMS
Using the last ten season's worth of data I compared two groups.

30 teams that ended up in the top half for CS. Let's call these Top Half CS.
60 teams that ended up in the bottom half for CS. Let's call these Bottom Half CS.

These included the promoted teams & the 12th-17th from the previous season.

    RESULTS
I looked how early each group delivered CS in the season, and produced numbers based on that.

    GW1
30 Top Half CS Teams --> 8 CS
60 Bottom Half CS Teams ---> 9 CS

    GW2
30 Top Half CS Teams --> 22 CS
60 Bottom Half CS Teams ---> 21 CS

    GW3
30 Top Half CS Teams --> 37 CS
60 Bottom Half CS Teams ---> 35 CS

    GW4
30 Top Half CS Teams --> 46 CS
60 Bottom Half CS Teams ---> 48 CS

So the two sets of CS are pretty much the same, except for one group being half the size of the other.
Therefore the improvers are showing this improvement right at the start of the season. The trend is there at GW1 and holds pretty much identically through the results from the next 3 GW.

    CONCLUSION
It seems early season CS form for the 'weak' teams is a good indicator of season long quantity of clean sheets.

If you see a promoted or 12th-17th team getting a clean sheet in the first week or two of the season, then they are 2x more likely to be a good bet for CS through the season.

That seems a pretty significant stat from such a small number of games played into the season.

Naturally there are plenty of examples of awful teams that kept and early clean sheet, so buyer beware when using this theory 🙂

Southampton were useful end of last season I think, and if Stoke and Newcastle can get back to their form of two years ago they would be possibilities.

Pretty sure I've found my opening combinations, barring top defensive transfers at bargain prices.

Great stuff, sometimes I fall into the trap of attributing clean sheets as flukes for these bottom half teams early in the season. Especially when in some games they get hammered. Norwich was a good example of this.

With city's kind opening schedule (NEW, car, HUL, sto, MNU, ast, EVE) , many fantasy managers will be looking at the options they have. Due to the high amount of midfielders that will be under serious consideration, it is unlikely that the likes of Silva, Nasri, and Toure coming off the back of a poor season along with Navas who is untried in the premier league will break into many line ups. Therefore most will look to the forwards on offer, Aguero and Dzeko.

Unless there is a big signing made by City before the start of the season to bolster the options they have upfront, it looks like the towering Bosnian and the agile Argentinian will be the main options. So with Aguero most likely guaranteed starts along with the form he had in the 11/12 season (24 goals, 9 assists, 30 BAPS), he will most commonly favoured option. But, Dzeko who played less minutes than Aguero last season out scored him on goals, assists and overall points and definitely shouldn't be overlooked. Dzeko who seems to score well particularly at the start of the season has now hit 28 goals, 12 assists and acquired 30 BAPS in little over 3000 minutes of football over the last two seasons. This is a fantastic return and if he were to play more regularly, who knows what he could produce. With Navas now signed, a bit more pace and trickery with a good deliverly has been added to one of the city flanks which should provide the ammunition for Dzeko to fire.

Given that Pellegrini opted to play with 1 striker more often than not at Malaga, it will hard to second guess who he will opt for. What may go in Dzeko's favour is that the Chilean has managed to persuaded him to stay, and he wouldn't have been able to do that unless he guaranteed him regular first team football. On the other hand, at Malaga he tended to play the smaller, more agile players up front which would work in Aguero's favour - the only difference is Aguero has pace potentially giving Pellegrini's tactics another dimension that Saviola and Roque Santa Cruz could offer at Malaga.

Plenty to ponder when considering City's assets then.

    What are your thoughts?

Cavaini's a strange one. There have been so many rumours about him. Last week it was reported that Napoli had agreed a fee with Chelsea. Then Napoli came out and said that they had only held talks with City. A couple of days ago, City came out and said that they have no intentions of paying the fee that Napoli want for him. Then earlier today, it was reported that Chelsea had agreed personal terms with him. I can see him staying at Napoli tbh.

Thinking about the new season ahead and possible rule changes and linked back to an old podcast, the discussion on the extra position "in the hole players" Michu, Fellaini etc

I never really thought that was much in it. These players players were oop, surely easy picks classified as midfielders. The talk of other midfielders being at a disadvantage when these guys were playing up top. Same could be said if this new position was created, and Fellaini for example drops back into centre midfield. I hope it was just a topic of conversation and not a real thought for an addition to the game

When the FPL points and position system was set up, pretty much everyone played 4-4-2, with 2 classic centre mids and 2 wingers. The wingers might be slightly more attacking than the missle 2, and one of the 2 CMs might play further forward, but basically they *were* actually midfielders.

With the variations of 4-3-3 you see now, the 2 midfielders that play either side in the furthest forward 3 have a massive advantage over the 3 in the more withdrawn 3.

Sure, I get that. Im just thinking that we live for an oop prospect, whether it be a defender, midfielder. We all know these guys are playing further forward, it should be a no brainer selection.

Think there is enough fantasy games out there that has a mix of reward for sitting midfielders and attacking ones. Lets keep fpl nice and straight forward, look for the oop that hit form at key times!

No way would they create a separate position for 'in the hole' players. There's not enough of them - you'd have a choice of what, 5 regular starters?.

Who do you all reckon the unexpected value midfielder will be this year? Last year people like Puncheon/Sterling were great options. I reckon if West Ham get a few injuries in midfield then Ravel Morrison would be a budget FPL option. He showed his quality and creativity at blues last season, so i think its just a matter of time before we see him getting game time in the Premier League

Amongst a host of other things, I always like to have a look at teams whose performances between the close of the January transfer window and the season's end do not entirely reflect their eventual overall finishing positions in the league. Sometimes it can give a small indication of value (or otherwise) the following August. Here's some of the more notable ones...

Arsenal: 4th position overall but comfortable winners of the 14 game post-transfer league. They only conceded a miserly eight goals along the way (50% less than the next best defence) and gubbed Bayern Munich in their own manor to boot. Title challengers in 2013/14 with a couple of headline transfers perhaps??

Aston Villa: Lost five of their last fourteen games but they were against Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United & Chelsea (four of those by a single goal). 15th overall but seven positions higher in the post-transfer league. They couldn't keep them out but only Liverpool scored more on the run in.

Southampton & Newcastle both finished reasonably well, emulating their overall positions by four places but...

Manchester City: Runners up but only the 6th best in the post-transfer league and an ignominious FA Cup final defeat compounded their slump in form. Too much flux happening around Eastlands to get too involved early doors perhaps?

West Brom: Two wins in their last eleven games, conceding 23 goals along the way (4th worst), is relegation form. They eventually finished 8th (six places higher than their post-transfer position) but a bottom half finish this season look likely.

Swansea: Their League Cup high managed to last to the following weekend when they beat Newcastle 1-0 at home but thereafter followed a remarkable downturn in form. One win in their last ten games (against Wigan) saw them slump to relegation class and not many teams scored less or conceded more. No Michu or Davies this year then?

in the second half of the season, Man City had not lost the title and propbably had the most to play for! Likewise whilst Arsenal may have been behind, I'm pretty sure Tot and Chelsea tried just as hard. This is a good analysis of the second half of the season imo, but if you want to write it off as 'selective data', that's your choice I suppose

Top post. I do this every year when looking for teams that over achieved due to results before xmas and under achieve for the same reason.

Once you spot a team that stands out you then have to look to the reasons for this.

Reasons some teams do better in second half of the season:

      1) new managers ideas being taken on board
      - can reasonably expect upturn to continue into new season

      2) new players bedding into existing team
      - can reasonably expect upturn to continue into new season

      3) team finally adjusting to the absence of a key player through either being sold or injured long term early in season
      - can reasonably expect upturn to continue into new season

      4) fighting for league position such as escape from relegation or top 4/europa
      - need to be wary of teams like this as without the motivation they can slip back to mediocrity

      5) some teams just traditionally do better second half every year for no apparent reason (see Everton)
      - old golden rule of fpl was don't invest in everton defence until after xmas but with a new manager this rule could be obsolete this year

      6) fixture schedule: some teams can face a horrendous run of all the top teams at home in the first half of the season which can effect form as its tough to go into an away fixture if you are getting tonked in your home games.
      - again we need to be wary of teams like this and monitor the fixtures before we invest

      7) change of manager midway through season
      - these teams can go either way as some teams get a supposed "bounce" effect with a new manager that dissolves after a number of games while some teams sustain their improvement due to changes made by the new manager

      8) key players returning from injury
      - can reasonably expect this form to continue

      9) players in a team hit above optimal performance levels
      - we need to be wary of regression to more normal form once the new season gets underway.

Higuain is unproven in the PL so it would be a very bold claim to say he will do better than RVP (assuming long term injuries aren't taken into account). Aguero should be up there this season provided City get good again.

I disagree, a true fan shouldn't be someone who supports their entire team with blind faith, you should be allowed to dislike players from your own team and admire those from other teams, I hate these restrictions people try to impose, I don't necessarily agree with Forca's opinions though!

I agree with this completely. I'm an Arsenal dude and I dig the club but not always the agitators (Walcott) or bunglers (Gervinho, Squilllaci, Eboue, Almunia, Silvestre...the list extends very long...). And while I don't want Bale or Suarez to score, I think they will, so the split personality that sees an FPL team as a three-max Arsenal enterprise (assuming I go for three) wants to do well and I get them.

Being an FPL enthusiast alone could be considered anti-club, really.

Mark, since you're here, you never did respond about Dawson, I'm not sure why you're getting excited, can you really see him dislodging either or McAuley or Al JOlsson? Both were immense last season

Yeah, I know but Dawson is a big prospect and I just wonder if Clarke will give him his chance - Olsson future wasn't looking assured this time last season so I just wonder if he'll get a sniff. I can't see Dawson sitting on the bench all season. Will be interesting.

oh agreed he's a prospect, but I think, as Jonny Evans found out to a degree last season, it takes an awful lot to dislodge a partnership that is very solid, how many games did Evans get once Rio and Vidic were both fit? Yet, how could you argue that Evans didn't deserve to start?

well everything at United is up in the air atm, even Thiago given his last tweey. We'll have to wait and see who Moyes prefers, as although he's an FPL troll, one thing we do know is, he doesn't like to change his back-four around much. I'd expect Evans to drop in price again, maybe down to 5.5, but given our start to the season, RvP is enough United cover for me until GW7.

Being able to sort the ticker by fixture difficulty is always handy. I use the player comparison tool in the members area and some of the stats tables (mainly Tommy's explosion imminent one) but other than that I rarely use the data in the members area.

There are some members only articles that are good reads. Above all, the price is very low for a year's to contribute to the site.

If you select pay by card with Paypal, you don't need to register an account. They keep that quiet but I've tested and it works fine.

We will have a Barclarycard system next month which takes debit and credit cards but, as I say, you can use Paypal without an account if you like.

The stat tables are good. You can sort players according to various criteria and indices and gauge potential like distribution and goal threat.

      - Season ticker
      - Comparison tool
      - Being able to create your own stats tables, as well as view others (Explosion Imminent aided plenty of fruitful transfers in the second half of the season for me)
      - Teams stats and player stats pages

I only used RMT the last few weeks and didnt read into too much, but on the two occassions I can recall it proved me wrong.

I hope the Reds get him but I think £20m+ is too much for a goalscorer with thge most dominant team, by miles, in the Ukrainian League. Hope he proves me wrong.

I hate 5.0m defenders outside the top 6. 5.0m is too much to rotate when you have 2 unused slots in defence. If you buy a 5.0m you need to look to play him nearly every game.

It depends. If they can compete with the higher priced defenders they can be worth it. Rafael was 5.5m last season and is a great example of a successful mid priced defender.

Crespo was a Carlos Tevez in terms of his attitude off field. Yes, good striker but the only reason why he left Chelsea was because of his off field antics. Never used to train properly. So Chelsea are not to blame.
Shevchenko wasn't destroyed by Chelsea either. Was Roman's signing and never quite fit into the system properly. So would you blame the club solely for a partnership failure??
Mutu, Duff and Kezman weren't exactly failures. Kezman lost his form and tailed off.

Zhirkov and Parker i would agree. Same with Sidwell.

              Yeah definitely.

And going from little to no exercise then lifting can be dangerous. Using muscles you are not used to using in that context can lead to injury which has serious implications. A novice can get enough muscle recruitment doing other forms of exercise without placing too much demand on their body.

It depends on the intensity and duration of the exercise. Swimming is beneficial if you are on the heavier side as running places alot of stress on your joints while swimming can also increase flexibility and water provides resistance throughout your workout.

The swimming stroke will impact on the intensity of your exercise also. 30 minutes breaststroke and 30 minutes butterfly are very different with regards to the physical demands. You could think you are doing more because you are in the pool but not put in as much effort as you might on a run. And running you can incorporate interval training (sprinting with short rest periods) which is really good for fat burning.

And most important of all do the exercise that you enjoy the most. You are much more likely to adhere to a fitness regime if you enjoy the activity you are doing. If you don't enjoy swimming you are much less likely to put the time and effort in.

am gonna put this on the right fecking post

Spurs back line for next season?

    Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Vert?

Or do we expect one of Dawson or Kaboul to lose out, with Vert going to cb and Rose/BAE/Naughton playing lb.

If Kaboul can nail down a spot am very interested in him, can't see him being more than 5.0

      Vert at CB.
      Rose at LB.
Or Spurs manage to bring a new CB and Vert goes to the left.

You think they will sign a CB with Dawson, Kaboul, Caulker and Vertonghen there already?

Haven't the foggiest. No point really until the prices are out...

A cheap nailed on Craig Dawson would be in my team, almost certainly.

      Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose

Dawson and to a less extent Caulker to get games, possibly a new LB to come in. Vertonghen to play LB vs. Stoke and West Ham and maybe Sunderland.

there will be some shuffling around of that line last like year but I reckon we go with the optimal

      Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Dawson/BAE

BAE for when we need to break down defences
and Vert on LB when we need to defend

Manager told me get a grip and play through it, 5 mins later BANG 1-1
Ballacks with a sublime chest down and left foot volley to level it up,
    🙂

I'm probably due a bap or two too, has the bap chap been on?

Morning lads. Was scanning the ticker and noticed that Newcastle have a tasty run in for the first 7 GWs or so.

Any takers? Thoughts on where to invest in and on whom?

Is Danny Graham expected to spear head Di Matteo's attacking Sunderland side? He used to be a great FPL player, will the sleeper awaken?

Steven Fletcher does not do deep roles, he's a lead striker. Danny Graham will be chief bench warmer

He's a clever tactician and passer but lacks the legs to lead the formation.
