Mark Hughes made his first move into the transfer market as Stoke City manager last week with the acquisition of Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of 3.6m Euros. The 24-year-old joins up at the Britannia on a four-year deal and, although predominantly utilised as a left-back, also affords the Potters a versatility at centre-half, according to his new manager.

“I am delighted to have secured Erik’s signature. The main focus this summer in attempting to strengthen the squad is ensuring it is balanced in key positions. While Erik is predominantly a left back, he has also played for his country as a central defender, so he gives us other options. We need good quality in our starting eleven and good quality back-up for all areas, which Erik will certainly give us defensively.”

The History

Pieters initially started out as a central midfielder before being converted to a defender upon joining the FC Utrecht youth system. Making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2006, he produced two goals and three assists over a couple of seasons before PSV came calling in July 2008. His time in Eindhoven has been plagued by injury, though – knee, metatarsal (twice) and hand injuries (caused by his decision to punch a window after being sent off) have seen him sidelined for months at a time. As a result, he featured just 93 times in the Dutch top-flight over five years at the club, providing a total of nine assists.

On the international stage, Pieters helped Holland to the European U21 Championship Trophy back in 2008 and has since went on to represent the senior side on 17 occasions, though missed out on last year’s Euro 2012 due to injury.

The Prospects

While Hughes talked up the new boy’s versatility, it seems certain Pieters has been purchased to solve the Potters’ problematic left-back area. Tony Pulis utilised Marc Wilson, Andy Wilkinson, Geoff Cameron and even Robert Huth on the left of his defence last term but the Dutchman is determined to nail down a regular role, saying:

“I’ve had a few injuries but that’s all in the past now; I feel really good and can’t wait for my time as a Stoke City player to start. My first job is to defend but I always want to attack and contribute as much as I can for the team. I’ve played a couple of times in the centre of defence as well but left back is my position.”

Pieters’ runs down the left look set to offer Stoke more of an attacking approach from deep as Hughes attempts to bring a little more flair to their football after seasons of dour displays under Pulis. The above-mentioned quartet managed a single assist between them all season – alarmingly, a tally mirrored by Matt Etherington and Michael Kightly, who started a combined 28 games on the left of midfield.

With creativity required throughout the team in order to help address the dire 34 goal haul from last season, the Dutchman certainly looks fundamental to Hughes’ plans, with the likes of Wilson and Wilkinson set to play the part of bench-warmers. While a consistency of starts looks on the cards – providing he steers clear of injury, of course – price remains an issue for the Potters rearguard options after they shipped a mere 45 times in Pulis’ last season.

A rise across the Fantasy games for Asmir Begovic is anticipated – popular opinion anticipates a move to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for the stopper, while there’d be no real surprise if Huth and Ryan Shawcross come in at a similar cost. Given that Pieters looks likely to be nailed-on under Hughes he may well follow suit; such a scenario may ultimately leave the Stoke right-back spot as the best value – with Ryan Shotton, Cameron and Wilkinson all capable of filling in, the hope is their prices will remain a little lower due to the uncertainty, affording us a cheap option around the 5.0 mark.

The opening fixtures hardly fall in Stoke’s favour, though, and even if Pieters is handed a more favourable cost across the Fantasy games, initial investment seems unlikely. Hughes’ rein kicks off with trips to Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal in the opening five and with a home clash against City also on the cards, the Gameweek 2 visit of Palace seems the only kind favour over that period. As featured in our recent series of rotation articles, a Stoke/Norwich combination has plenty potential for the season ahead, though whether Hughes can bring an extra attacking verve to the Potters’ play without sacrificing some of the resilience instilled under Pulis remains to be seen.

Myth Busters: Demel (FPL 12/13 - 91pts) will be a decent option next season.

For those who can't stop believing the hype, I give you this:

    1. Demel accumulated close to 45% of his tally (41pts) in the last 11 games of the season.
    2. This included two assist (one of which, if I remember correctly was a massive farce). He got one assist in the other 27 games (admittedly he didn't play in seven, which is incidently a further concern).
    3. It also included five CS's (one of which was a 78min sub, where WH went on to concede). He got four CS's in the other 27 games.
    4. On the occasions I watched him, he was an entirely uninspiring, verging on incredibly frustrating. Was like watching a horse & cart trying to get forward. And his crossing was abysmal.
    5. This season he will no doubt come in around 5.0m or even slightly higher and his game time is likely to be affected a Rat (so much does Big Sam trust him).

I appreciate (hope) many are just messing every time they mention him (having no doubt enjoyed most, if not all of the 41pts, having brought him in GW28), but for those who aren't, proceed with caution.

I'm willing to stand corrected, but I dare anyone to start with him in the coming season. Trust me, don't believe the hype.

PS I had him in my squad from GW3-27, before swapping him for O'Brien, so might be a bit bitter 😛 but still believe he'll be found out as a genuine FPL prospect for 13/14 😉

Last season Demel was a classic run-away bandwagon, which gathered speed and direction not from any sort of quality, but from a ridiculous amount of luck and good fortune.

In the final 11 GW's almost everything went his way. Having had him for the previous 24 GW's (when he was a complicated joke with no punch line), I could only watch in 😯

im sure the stats for group victories, goals scored, quarter finals reached would be absolutely damning when totted up for last decade or so of major tournaments

somewhere along the line something has gone seriously wrong.

my own opinion is that not putting and emphasis on techinical ability in ALL positions has left English football in the doldrums and I cant see anyway out of it now

The fans never get behind the team tbf, English fans are pretty poor in comparison to other countries.

In terms of actual footballing ability, English football doesn't have a particular "style", English players play at their best when linking up with foreigners because they can adapt to compliment their style of play.. but not necessarily emulate it.

People need to start getting real about England...We invented (?) the game and have won nothing since 1966...and guess what...we won nothing before it either...Our one solitary trophy was won on home soil which is a massive advantage in world cup tournaments (Italy, Germany, Uruguay, France, Argentina, England won their tounies...Brazil, Sweden runners up in their tournies)...still needs winning but the evidence for home advantage is clear...People seem to believe we had a golden time when we some how dominated world football...it isn't true...we have never sat at the top table at football....Nothing has gone wrong, we have simply stood still in the place we have always been...second best...!!!!

I suppose to a certain degree very few clubs in England focused on technical ability. Liverpool have always been a club focused on 'pass and move' since Shankly so that may be why they did better in Europe.

It's almost certainly largely down to the lack of qualified coaches in England.

Coaches holding Uefa's B, A or Pro badges:
          Germany - 34,790; Italy - 29,420; Spain - 23,995; England - 2,769.

Ratio of qualified coaches to players:
          Germany - 1:150; Italy - 1:48; Spain - 1:17; England - 1:812

Ratio of Pro-licensed coaches to players:
          Spain - 1:190; England - 1:19,565.

          Data from 2010.
          http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/01/football-coach-shortage-england

"Spain have almost as many Pro-licensed coaches as there are English coaches of any stripe: 2,140 as against 2,769"

Just got back from holiday (climbed Mt Kinabalu for those interested) and would love if somebody could fill me in for the last week or so.

How does it look in terms of fixtures, any players that are absolute must-haves based on fixtures?

Bayern killed that old myth that you can't have a strong domestic league and a successful national side...... We need more English players playing 1st team football and playing to a system that they then play at national level. Germany and Spain have a system and style of play that both their clubs and national sides play, players are taught both from 5 years old.......

Yeah a big problem is promising players being bought by the "top teams" when they're 18-22 or something and then not getting regular football. E.g. Henderson, Oxlade, Rodwell, now Zaha likely to be the same.

It kills me. Saints have survived feeding players like Bale, Ox, Theo to bigger clubs but to see them sit on the bench when they could be playing week in week out is such a waste.

I think one of the issues is they get huge pay rises and think they've made it as top footballers so don't want to go on loan or move back to a lesser team when it's not working out.
I'm glad the likes of Carroll and Sturridge have moved though and will play regularly, hopefully Ox goes on loan somewhere this season, he barely played last year.

Germany also has a good system of club ownership which means vast sums of money aren't spent on foreign players.

The timings of the games are already out on the Fifa website, the final today is played at 2 a.m my time, and excluding the group stages, the latest a game would be played at the world cup is at midnight, so from that. you can know what time the matches will be on. The group stage matches will be all over though, from something like 7 p.m my time till 4 a.m
