With the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game now up and running, Fantasy managers are scouring the market for value as they piece together their pre-season squads. After running the rule over Goalkeepers, we now take our time to look at defenders – splitting our analysis over three separate articles, we begin with the budget options as we cast an eye over those under the 5.0 mark.

Having racked up a mere five clean sheets in 2012/13, it’s no surprise to see Villa centre-halves Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark come in at 4.5. Looking at the new acquisitions so far this summer, left-back Antonio Luna is the most appealing cheap option in Paul Lambert’s squad, though. Providing he can cement a regular role at left-back, the Spaniard should be afforded plenty license to forage down the flank if, as anticipated, Paul Lambert maintains a 4-3-3 formation.

Cardiff duo Matthew Connolly and Mark Hudson carried plenty goal threat last term. The centre-halves notched five and four goals respectively for Malky Mackay’s side and have been slapped with a 4.5 price tag, with the Bluebirds registering 18 clean sheets in their Championship-winning season. If they can replicate their attacking endeavours, they look decent alternatives to David Marshall (4.5) between the sticks.

Over at fellow promoted club Palace, only Damien Delaney is 4.5, thanks to his three goals and two assists in 2012/13. The rest of Ian Holloway’s current defenders are listed at a mere 4.0, with Jonathan Parr looking the most viable cut-price option – he provided four assists from left-back before sustaining an ankle injury last term and is hoping to be ready in time for the new campaign. Parr could afford us a cheap, fifth bench-warming defender and is less expensive than Julian Speroni (4.5) – the keeper option at Selhurst Park.

Holloway’s side also rotate with Hull, where former Man United youth prospect James Chester featured 44 times last term. At 4.0, he seems secure for starts, though Steve Bruce’s summer shopping spree, which has so far seen Curtis Davies and Maynor Figueroa arrive (both priced at 4.5) is a little worrying, bearing in mind Bruce plans to play three at the back again. If Chester, as expected, keeps his place, a potential rotation pairing with the likes of Parr looks eye-catching at 8.0 for the duo, though with clean sheets a concern, many may choose to pick up just one player from Palace or Hull as bench fodder material.

Providing he can remain injury-free, Antolin Alcaraz could play a major part in Everton’s season if Roberto Martinez moves to 3-4-3. While the Paraguayan’s 4.5 price is cheaper than any other Toffees regular, he may struggle for investment due to potential out of position prospects elsewhere in Martinez’s defence – Fantasy managers will be keeping an eye on the goalkeeper situation at Goodison, however, with Joel Robles similarly priced. There’s more potential in Fulham’s summer signing Fernando Amorebieta, though. The Spaniard has been handed a kinder price tag than the rest of Martin Jol’s regulars – he sets you back 4.5 and is expected to be installed alongside Brede Hangeland at the heart of the back-four, with the Cottagers boss looking for a little more assurance in possession at the back.

Both Javier Garrido and Michael Turner offer a cheap route into the Norwich backline, coming in at 4.5 apiece. Turner undoubtedly looks the most appealing of the pair – he scored three times in 26 appearances last season and with Chris Hughton bringing in Martin Olsson (also 4.5), Garrido looks to have real competition for the left-back slot. With home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa allied with a trip to Villa in the opening five, the Norwich defence looks a strong shout for investment, with Turner also cheaper than keeper John Ruddy (5.0).

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor may prove a cheap option at the back for Alan Pardew’s side. The centre-half has been priced lower than most of the Magpies’ defensive regulars but could face real competition for a starting berth from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – whoever wins the battle to partner Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of the back-four could be a budget-friendly acquisition at 4.5 and will, of course, offer a home/away partnership with Sunderland over the 38 Gameweeks. Newcastle need to improve considerably from last term, though, having conceded 68 goals – if they can even begin to approach the resilience that harvested 15 clean sheets in the 2011/12 campaign, there could be real value in the Magpies’ cut-price assets.

Southampton’s raiding full-backs Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both look enticing at 4.5. The Saints conceded just nine times in the last 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13 and with the likes of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama added to the ranks, confidence is high in their defensive potential – Clyne and Shaw should also offer attacking threat down the flanks in Mauricio Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1, with their pace and creativity in the final third key to their manager’s formation. For those eyeing up a Southampton/West Ham rotation plan, the Hammers’ James Collins also comes in at 4.5 – teaming him up with one of Clyne or Shaw will set you back 9.0, compared to a Ruddy/Jussi Jaaskelainen combination at 10.5. Both sides rotate over the entire 38 Gameweeks and would hand you (CAR, SUN, STO, WHM, EVE, CPL, SWA, MCI, FUL, AVL) over the opening 10 Gameweeks of the season.

For the Black Cats, new recruits Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite are also ones to consider in the budget bracket, though their prospects are somewhat hampered by a tricky first few months. With Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Tottenham all rolling up to the Stadium of Light by Gameweek 15, it’s difficult to justify any level of investment in Paolo Di Canio’s backline for the first few months, denting the prospect of a Tyne-Wear defensive partnership for just 9.0. Swansea’s fit-again Neil Taylor also comes in at 4.5. The left-back spent the vast majority of last term in the treatment room but, with Europa League duties and the Capital One Cup to defend, there’s the fear that Michael Laudrup will rotate Taylor with 5.0 priced Ben Davies from one game to the next, thus denting both players’ Fantasy potential over the upcoming campaign.

I've been looking at the Bonus Point System (BPS) a bit today to try and get an average BPS score per match for a range of players excluding things like goals and assists.

I've taken the BPS score for each player, and deducted from it the BPS points for goals, assists, clean sheets, and added on points that would have been deducted for 2+ goals conceded, then divided it by the number of games played (I've counted appearances of less than 60 mins as half games). That way it gives an average BPS score for the 'intangibles' that are not already rewarded.

Here's the results. Bear in mind that as you get 2 pts for playing 60 mins plus, any score below 2 means that players are, overall, loosing points instead of gaining them. Points for goals (4, 6 or 8) assists (3) and clean sheets (4, defenders only) would then be added on to these typical base values

    Strikers
    3.6 Ruiz
    2.1 Berbatov
    2.0 Lambert
    1.7 Sturridge
    1.6 Kone
    1.1 RVP
    0.9 Giroud
    0.8 Caroll
    0.6 Aguero
    0.5 Benteke
    0.1 J Rod

    Mids
    4.8 Arteta
    4.8 Schneiderlin
    4.3 Yaya
    4.2 Noble
    3.9 Cazorla
    3.7 Silva
    3.6 Mata
    2.8 Lallana
    2.8 Hazard
    2.1 Michu
    1.8 Snodgrass
    1.7 Bale
    1.4 Mirreles
    1.3 Walcott
    1.1 Gaston

    Defenders
    5.3 Jagielka
    5.2 Yoshida
    5.2 Mertasacker
    4.2 Baines
    4.1 Clyne
    3.6 Coleman
    3.4 Turner
    3.0 Garrido

    Some observations;

    - Apart from Ruiz (effectively a mid) and support strikers like Lambert and Berbatov, strikers do extremely badly, and actually seem to loose points, I assume that this is due to multiple loses of possession and shots off target, with them not having enough passes or tackles etc to make any points back

    - Mids can generally be split into Central mids (>4 BPS), Creative mids (2.5 to 4 BPS) and Attacking mids (

      the short version;

      - Centre backs score more than full back, both score more than most mids

      - Forwards won't get any boni unless they score

      - Attacking mids will also struggle

      - Creative mids will tend to grab the boni where there is a tie in goals scored or assists

      - Central mids won't get enough BPs to score boni unless they do something else

      - Defenders will absolutely clean jup in 0-0 draws, and do OK in 1-0 and 2-0s

The players at the top of these lists are naturally those who I would deem underrated by people - including those chosing FPL teams.

Berbatov, Ruiz, Jagielka, Mertesacker and ARTETA(!!!!!!!) are soo underrated as footballers - BPS shows just how good they really are and always have been and gives them credit for it!

Sir, to start thank you for your work.

Now, I understand / see how a player like Arteta will be rewarded for their style of play under the new BPS however, what does this mean for his bottom line?

Last year, Arteta scored a total of 131pts; 20 of them under the old 'bouns points' system.

Can you guess as to what his total score may have been under the new BPS?

    11 CS
    16 n/a
    41 App games
    total 110
    ppg 2.7

    The ppg isn't great but there are a few things to consider here;

    1. The 16 n/a games involve promoted sides who you could argue are the easiest fixtures. The 16 split is 4 homes for Hull (part of the Uber) and 12 games against promoted sides. Using last years promoted side stats, they failed to score 21/57 or 37% of the time. There are 8 home fixtures against promoted sides. Using the percentage number you can say there would be 3 clean sheets. This would give you 28 further points (2point GW for other 5) or 3.5ppg. This would raise the total ppg to 2.8ppg
    2. I haven't included any unpredictable scoring such as goals, assists, BAPS. Can you assume this would add another 0.5 onto the ppg? to gain 0.5 you would need 25 attacking points from the 49 games (2012/13 results + Promoted home games) to raise the figure by 0.5. The ppg would sit at 3.3 ppg at this stage. I also believe that 25 additional points from 49 games is an underestimate but I don't want to mess the figure up to much with unpredictable events.
    3. Of the eight remaining games, 4 are Hull fixtures playing NOR/CAR/WHM/AVL. I can't say anything for Cardiff but WHM were last, Norwich 3rd last and Villa 14th for goals scored on the road. 2 Clean sheets out of 4?
    4. These figures are using last seasons defensive records. We are all predicting an increase in returns for Southampton or Newcastle for example.

Conclusion: Having managed to conservatively estimate a ppg of 3.3 and with positive thinking I believe this could go as high as 3.8 ppg the Uber is something well worth considering. 3.3 ppg last season was the equivalent of Sagna or Shawcross. Both are likely to be priced around 5.5. 3.8ppg and the Uber is equivalent to Vidic, Agger or Azpil.

Don't forget, the other non measurable is the benefits you would get with a bigger budget for your front 8 as this is the whole point of the Uber

Great read here on Mourinho and his thoughts on the team/certain players/formations. May be helpful for you:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jul/16/jose-mourinho-chelsea-fernando-torres?mobile-redirect=false

    Some key points to note:

    - He says he's happy with the whole squad and doesn't want to sell anyone. He expects Torres to stay.

    - 'He intends to tweak his favoured 4-3-3 formation for particular matches, occasionally using two defensive-minded deep-lying midfielders while retaining the flexibility to be more expansive.'

    - "We will play 4-2-3-1 in the first game, my favourite system, though sometimes I change the triangle and play with one in front of the defenders and two players up," Mourinho said. "Other times I play with double midfielders and a No10."

    - "But in another match I could change it. If we are losing, we might need to have two pure strikers. It is something we will work on because I would like to have this capacity to have it ready to play, independent of the players we have"

    - "With Mata, I need to get to know him better. I like sometimes to play with what I call 'wingers with the wrong foot' – right-footed men on the left and left-footed men on the right. He is the only left-footed player we have when we want to play with a winger on the right side, but the competition is hard. We will have Schurrle, De Bruyne, Mata, Oscar, Hazard and Moses for these three positions and so we have many more options than Chelsea had in the last year."

Sounds like a fair bit of rotation to me, with their not being a nailed on attacker. Still expect Hazard/Mata to do the best but they'll be frustrating to own due to random rotation.

    Good morning Chaps,

On the bus to work this morning i got thinking about VALUE and how it doesnt take into account game time, only last years score and current price. SO when i got in a did a few calcs and looked at a ''Time Weighted Value'' of the top players in each position to see how to maximise value.

    Calculation: 2012 Score / 2013 Value / Mins Played x 1000 (to get a value over 0)

    FORWARDS
    RVP - 5.992
    Aguero - 5.658
    Lambert - 7.976
    Sturridge - 8.771
    Benteke - 6.545
    Lukaku - 9.912
    Berbs - 7.64
    Dzeko - 9.508

    MIDFIELD
    Bale - 7.103
    Hazard - 7.616
    Coutinho - 8.426
    Walcott - 8.933
    Mata - 7.398
    Snoddy - 7.667
    Nolan - 7.145
    Michu - 7.041
    Santi - 6.21
    Mirallas - 7.006
    Silva - 6.504

    DEFENDERS
    Baines - 6.900
    Zabaletta - 7.801
    Mertesacker - 8.106
    Evra - 7.642
    Ivanovic - 7.470
    Nastasic - 8.191
    Johnson - 7.34
    Vertonghen - 6.347

Take from these what you will, be it something or nothing. My immediate thoughts are that there seems to be a good spread of value across all positions.

In attack, RVP seems to have been priced out of the game and should only be picked IF he and UTD are looking on top form. Lukaku value from last year is surprising and it will be interesting to see if he can get consistent game time this year as he could be one to watch. My thoughts are that Aguero will have a much improved season than last, and that the impressive form, value and fixtures of Lambert and Sturridge will see them partner him in my front 3.

In Midfield, i was surprised to see Walcott with such a high weighted value. for that reason he will be in my starting team and i hope he can mature further this year. Coutinho also has a very high weighted value even despite his high pricing this year, though i think i will watch and see how they line up before getting him in, It was interesting to see Santi, Silva and Michu with such low weighted value, Michu perhaps priced out and hopefully santi and silva will do better. I will go for Bale and Hayard with Walcott for a solid mid 3.

In Defence, Baines price means his weighted value is relatively low, and people like Nasty and Mert have relatively high figures. I think the key at the start of the season will be to have 5 mid to low price defs who can rotate in and out with perhaps one mid level like Nasty or Azpi in there to stay.

Finally, i appreciate that players who play less game time over a season stand the chance to have a great few matches (ie Super Subs with high output but lowe game time) but these above players are generally players who will play significant game time this season.

Thanks, useful information, I've done something similar myself. You tend to get those that haven't had much game time like Buttner coming out really well. My issue with this method though is that the choice of Captain is really important in FPL getting double points, so whilst RVP and Bale may not seem like 'good value for money' it is very important to have a viable captain choice each week and ensure the players are on the pitch, e.g. how much gametime are Lukaku and Dzeko likely to get?

Completely agree, it is really important to have big captain choices, but also equally important to have a good spread of Value. As with most things balance is the key, and based on his price tag and uncertainty of form with tough fixtures and new manager i am staying away for now as i dont think he represents value. Bale does more so and has better fixtures so he is in....

As mentioned I've done this myself and the best value team of players in theory would be:

        GK - Tremmel, Ruddy

DEF - Buttner, Taylor (SWA), Terry, Monreal, Maicon

MID - Oviedo, Sinclair, Obertan, Fletcher, Kacaniklic

        STR - Moore, Maiga, Becchio

As mentioned, most of these are likely to struggle for game time...

The following team is value for money players who played over 2000 minutes last season (although this obviously rules out newly promoted teams, and players transferred in in the Jan transfer window):

          GK - Schwartzer, Szczesny

DEF - Enrique, Turner, O'Brien, Bassong, Mertesacker

MID - Puncheon, Routledge, Walcott, Pilkington, Hernandez

          STR - Lukaku, Crouch, Rodriguez

With a bit of work and balance as Nevillewearsprada suggests this could be a decent side...

Interesting, how about at say 2800 minutes to get players who are likely to play more often? Balance with a few big hitters is always the name of the game, just how much to spend on the big hitters.... 14% of your money on 6.6% of your players just seems too much when there is such uncertainty.

If he BANGS them in in preseason then i will change my mind 🙂

            Good work

Yes that's what I'm looking at for the Sun game (I know most people on here aren't keen on this one but need to beat my work mates) as there are limited transfers so really need players to be on the pitch every week.

That's right, we should take advantage. There are also more viable 4.5m priced mids this time around, and even a 5.0m striker in Gayle. Stocking up on this year's cheapies could free up a lot of useful cash elsewhere.

Hi guys. I've been wondering how to manage to benefit from the chelsea dgw and still be able to cope with the uncertainties surrounding the beginning of the season.

This is the latest version of my team. Any thoughts?

    Boruc / Mannone/Westwood

Luiz / A. Cole / (Whittaker / Shaw / Baker) these last three can easily be changed.

    Mata / Dempsey / Silva / Mirallas / Thomas

    Aguero / Lambert / Berbatov

The idea is to either WC or do Luiz + Mata --> Bale + 4.5-defender in first two gw.

Captaincy to Mata gw 1 and shared by Bale and Aguero in the 9 gw to come!

    Any thoughts?

Draft with RVP and Bale- of course not the strongest in defence but it's clear to accommodate Bale+RVP you need to make some sacrifice somewhere. Would rather do it in defence since we all know the majority of the points are at the midfield/strikers.

    Boruc / McGregor
    Collins / M.Turner / B.Turner / Chester / Parr
    Bale / Hazard / Walcott / G.Ramirez / Thomas
    RVP / Berbatov / Aspas

Berbatov may be switched with Lambert or Carroll. The whole backline/GK's are still up in the air, Alcaraz may be considered if he looks nailed on for Everton. The 2 4.5's at the back may be switched with a 5.0 (eg Coleman, Kaboul) and a 4.0

I think you've got something there. Not sure about G Ramirez though - I would be tempted to go with someone like Koren and invest the money in strengthening your defense a bit (also prefer Mannone over McGregor)

Yeah I'm not even sure if I'm gonna go with RVP yet (if not RVP it'd be Aguero). Yeah I can see your doubts on Ramirez, think he's going to have a great season though! Alternatives at 6.0 are Morrison, Sissoko perhaps.

Yeah downgrading the 6.0 is an option to improve defence, I just feel like there's hardly any potential under 6.0 for a midfielder that's gonna be playing every week. #

Will take a look at Mannone, cheers mate!

Yeah the past few days I ruled out RVP because United play Liverpool/City/Chelsea in the first 5 and the Moyes factor.

Then I read the argument that if RVP starts off on fire and it looks again like we can't do without it would kinda mess the team up to find 3.0 to switch out Aguero for him.

This is the first season I can remember where I'm finding it easy to create teams I like with the £100m budget.

The large amount of good defenders at 5.5-6m and the large amount of solid £4.5m defenders means I'm considering totally ignoring the three promoted teams' defences. I like Bellamy from the promoted teams but that's it!

I don't get this logic. If RVP scores twice, and RVW scores three times, isn't it the 33.5% with the problem?

I have ignored all 3 aswell. I was considering Burner but I don't need him now.

      You going without RVP?

Well I have a lot of time to think about it and change my mind but my first (VERY hastily compiled) team is without him and I like the look of the kind of teams I can get without him.

I won't do an RMT until the last week as it's pretty much pointless right now.

    A: Mcgregor, Marshall
    Koscielny, Coleman, Turner, Shaw, Chester
    Ramirez, Kaca, Hazard, Bale, Kagawa
RVP, Anelka, RvW/Berbatov (not sure which!)

    B: Marshall, Mcgregor
    Coleman, Koscielny, Chetser, Nasty, Shaw
    Mirrillas, Hazard, Bale, Coutinho, Thomas
    RvW, Bony, Benteke

Baines is the most-owned back, along with Zabaleta.

His output over the past 3 seasons has been magnificent

Price is reasonable, but city should sign some new attackers to dampen surety of starts

Just a word of warning for all those starting to consider Gayle. I would say he's a great pick, but if Palace manage to acquire Odemwingie, all bets are off. We put in a 2 million bid a couple of days ago, so we'll just wait and see i guess

Even if he nails down that starting role, I'm not sure he's a must. By last season's prices perhaps, but we've got more options in that price bracket this time around.

Foster? You can get better balance without Morrison.
