Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway made his third signing of the close season last week by acquiring Jerome Thomas on a free transfer. The 30-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a two-year deal and follows Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie to the club as Holloway strengthens his side in preparation for next term.

Speaking to the Palace official website, Thomas admitted he had a number of offers on the table but, following talks with the Eagles boss, was convinced he’ll have a part to play for in the season ahead:

“It was a case of me being on a free and weighing up my options. I wanted to stay at the top level, which is obviously the Premier League. I heard of Crystal Palace’s interest from January actually, and once they got promoted Ollie gave me a call when I was away on holiday, we had a good talk for about 45 minutes and after that conversation there wasn’t much doubt in my mind where I wanted to go. I hope I can bring a lot to the team. I’ve got experience of the Premier League and the gaffer’s going to give me the freedom to play how I want to play – my attacking game – which I haven’t been able to do for the last couple of seasons. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Thomas failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners. Farmed out on loan to QPR between 2001-03, he featured just 10 times over two seasons and found the net three times before Charlton snapped him up for £100,000 back in 2004.

Established as a regular at The Valley, the winger went on to make 103 appearances, producing seven goals and four assists for the Championship club before making his way to then-Premier League Portsmouth on loan in August 2008. Thomas signed a permanent one-year deal just a few days later but a spine problem put paid to his game time and restricted him to a couple of appearances.

He was then snapped up by West Brom as a free agent the following summer and proceeded to play a pivotal part in the Baggies return to the top-flight, scoring seven times and providing a pair of assists in 27 Championship appearances. Thomas’ most impressive campaign in the Premier League arrived in 2010/11, where he managed three goals and seven assists in 33 appearances, but the installation of Roy Hodgson and, subsequently, Steve Clarke, proved detrimental to his prospects. The winger managed just one goal and three assists in 39 appearances over the past two seasons and was farmed out on loan to Leeds for a brief spell last term, producing a goal and pair of assists in six matches before returning to his parent club.

The Prospects

Judging by Thomas’ comments, it certainly seems that he’s been given assurance of game time over the season ahead as Holloway looks for a little extra top-flight experience in order to prevent Palace from slipping straight back into the Championship. While the Eagles boss fielded Yannick Bolasie on the left flank for the vast majority of last season’s matches, it was noticeable that he turned to youngster Jonathan Williams for the play-offs – a suggestion that he wasn’t quite settled on a regular for the position.

Alternatively, Thomas could be handed the role in “the hole†behind a lone forward in Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation for the season ahead and if he’s afforded the above-mentioned “freedomâ€, could prove a canny purchase by the Londoners. Yet to be listed by either the Sun Dream Team or the Sky Sports games, Thomas’ appeal for the 2013/14 is mainly down to a cut-price valuation of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, making his perfect fifth midfielder material.

With virtually every other midfielder under 5.0 plying their trade in a more defensive position, Thomas’ popularity is likely to take an unexpected hike as we analyse the Player Lists for this season’s Raheem Sterling or Jason Puncheon. While there will surely be more alternatives to come over the next few weeks as clubs bolster their squads, the likes of Villa’s Aleksandar Tonev, Southampton’s Victor Wanyama and Hull trio Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady or Roberto Koren (all priced at 5.0) could appeal to those eyeing up a midfield rotation partner for the former Baggies man, with the latter two offering a solid option over the first seven Gameweeks.

Essentially, then, we’re not expecting Thomas to light up the top-flight on a weekly basis but at that price, he could prove decent value for money if Holloway is true to his word and hands him a regular role.

Anyone else agree about the lack of good strikers this year?

IMO once you look past RVP, there are no heavy hitters that I would consider having, making it even more likely that I'll be picking him up come GW1.

Usually there's 5 or 6, however I can only see 1 who I'd be confident in owning to rack up points for that price.

Yeah pretty slim pickings. There's Aguero/Negredo...Rooney if he moves.

Otherwise its one of Bony/Lambert/Berb in the midrange and JRod and one or two new additions in the lower reaches.

I think Sturridge is a good shout. Aspas could be a steal. He's a bit like Suarez but with a little less flair.
As is Bent if he moves.
City will attack like hell, so whoever leads their forward line could be great, that said, Pello likes to rotate his strikers.
Bony and RvW could go crazy.

Assuming Bent goes to Newcastle and there is no DGW:

Boruc, Mannone (Who needs H/A rotation 😛 )

    Turner, Shaw, Collins, Yanga-Mbiwa, McShane

    Bale, Walcott, Silva, Snodgrass, Brunt

    RVP, Bent, Ruiz

JRod has potential but I'm not convinced, Anelka not going to perform in my opinion and not even sure how much he'll play.

Downgrade one of the 4 big midfielders and upgrade Anelka?

Forgot all about sun dream team existing since they stopped doing it in Scotland for some unknown reason. Won 2 monthly £1000 prizes back in the day.
Does the premier league one have same problem as happened in Scotland in that guys just put in 100 plus teams to cover all possible options so they had the weekly prizes sewn up?

I have a dilemma and any guidance would be appreciated.

            A) Boruc, Mannone, Snodgrass, Lambert

            B) Boruc, Foster, Mirallas, Rodriguez

                As B, it would be:

                Boruc // Foster

                Clyne // Collins // Turner // Turner // Chester

                Bale // Hazard // Walcott // Mirallas // Thomas

                Aguero // Sturridge // Rodriguez

I'm relatively set on the rest of the big guns, unforrtunately. Sturridge perhaps very slightly less so but with Suarez suspended I do fancy him to clean up. Wishing I could fit Lambert in though!

Any comments on this lot? Couldn't find a way to shoe-horn Bale in. For me RVP feels *slightly* more necessary, and it feels easier to work Bale in at a later stage than RVP.

I'm open to the possibility, but not sure who I'd be happy to downgrade to. I know Foster rotates quite well with Boruc, but not sure if I'm ready to trust the West Brom defence again yet. And I certainly don't know if I trust Sunderland enough to go for Mannone.

I can be convinced though, if you have suggestions!

Foster would be a good fit. At the start of last reason WBA were very reliable defensively even if they admittedly trailed off. I just think at the very least he'll get save points and WBA are reasonable defensively! Particularly since the rotation is good and their home form in particular was much better.

I posted my full team above, do you still think B rather than A? Lambert was so consistent last year, it's a puzzler.

That's a really tough one to be honest. Looking at your squad I assume you'll be playing 3-4-3? If so, then you're going to be relying on your 3rd striker. So it all comes down to how much you think JRod will play. If you have concerns about his playing time, then I guess it has to be Lambert.

            Man Utd fixture analysis

Going by the ticker...which is handy to emphasise the point, Man Utd have a grand total of ONE fixture in the top 5 fixtures within the first five gameweeks.

For a team like Utd, you are looking for dominance. Expected CS, expected goals etc. This is not what I see when I look at these fixtures. I see one of the toughest starts the Champions will have ever experienced.

They have 3 away days in their first 5 as well. Two of those are at Liverpool and Man City. They also face Chelsea at home and a tough away fixture to start at Swansea (a place they only managed to draw 1-1 last season).

Now, are you telling me that a 14m striker from this team is essential to begin the FPL season?

            I beg to differ!

What I envisage is tight encounters won or lost by the odd goal...maybe even two draws. What is clear is they are not going to have an easy time keeping CS or scoring goals. And one thing we know about Man Utd is that they can really spread the goals out over the team. RVP would need to be on absolute top form to come out of those 5 fixtures with a goal a game in my honest opinion.

We will wait and see. But I, for one, am unconvinced by the reliable robin.

I agree that the first 5 GWs don't look promising.

My thinking, however, is that if I plan to get him in at *any* point in the season, I'm going to have structure my team in such a way that allows me to do so without necessarily taking hits or using a WC - so he factors into my thinking indirectly even if I don't plan to have him immediately..

The game against Crystal Palace is before their first Champions League game which is before their first Champions League game and a game against City so RVP could get rested in that game.

                True.

But if he had Hull, Palace, Villa and Cardiff in his first 5 games we'd all be shelling out £14m quite happily for him ad leaving the armband on him.

So fixtures do also play a big part in whether we have him at £14m or not.

Too many fall for the home-always-good--away-always-bad mindset. That's what this original post and rotation spreadsheets have wrong.

Of course home field is an advantage to some extent ... but teams like Utd can face teams parking the bus at home - making the scorelines lower. Playing teams away more often has the opponent opening up their offense, and thus becoming vulnerable to a counter-attacking set up like Utd.

Don't fall into a simplistic 'fixtures' mentality, imo.

But I don't feel my post is 'wrong' at all. It is merely opinion.

You must admit the fixtures are very tough.

I assume you are a man utd fan by your name and grav. I think there is a trend of man utd fans determined to have him whatever the cost. Neutrals are seeing it without rose-tinted glasses.

              Each have their pitfalls.

Kone rotation risk, Berbatov & Bony tough fixtures.

That said, I'd lean towards Kone but, listen to see what Martinez & EVE have in store for us.

PS. van Wolfswinkel or Aspas could be worth a look in that price range as NOR & LIV have a decent set of matches to start the year.

                Chester worries me.
Last year tomkins played 40+ ahead of promotion then Collins came in and i got burnt on tomkins.

Chester played 40+ but figueroa and Davies now signed.
How confident are you Chester will play?

I assume you mean Aspas and Anelka?

Aspas is nailed on while Suarez is suspended and if Suarez leaves it's good value- he has apparently looked grat in pre season too and Liverpool have good fixtures- he's my tip for this seasons Michu.

Anelka is getting on but Lukaku has gone back, Odenwingibe will leave, there only other recognized striker is Long- who doesn't score many so I'm confident Anelka is good value at 5.5

I actually have a very smillar team. I guess you are assuming that Benteke will go to Tottenham. Unless, I won't touch him with this AVL fixture. Here is my team btw:

              Bale, Hazard, Mirallas, Coutinho, Kacaniklic

Yep this, certainly a perception that Mourinho perceives him as Drogba II. Already scoring the winner in preseason won't hurt either.

I think he'll make it and at 4.5 I am getting rather tempted, provided it turns out Martinez's lack of CS was down to his defenders rather than his system.

Distin is 35 now, Heitinga is very likely to go, and Alcaraz is Martinez's trusted defender... I think he'll be a regular.
