Our fourth article focussing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List is rolled out this evening. With the Goalkeepers analysis followed by articles on the Budget and Mid-Price backline options, we this time turn to the premium priced defenders on offer for the season ahead:

Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge means the Chelsea backline is currently a source of uncertainty for Fantasy managers. While Petr Cech is nailed-on in goal and Ashley Cole (6.5) looks certain to retain the left-back role, the attacking potential offer up by both David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic would be preferable – with both players setting us back 6.5, though, it’s very much a case of “wait and see” over the pre-season. There’s the hope that Cesar Azpilicueta, at 6.0, can nail down the right-back berth – having produced six assists in his debut season, the Spaniard’s contribution down the flank could prosper in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Alternatively, Mourinho could reinstall the similarly priced John Terry (6.0) as a regular at the heart of his defence once again.

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines has been handed the highest valuation of any defender after racking up 177 points in the season gone by. At 7.5, the Everton full-back could be moved to the left of Roberto Martinez’s midfield in a 3-4-3 for the season ahead – while this would undoubtedly further his points potential, Seamus Coleman, at 5.0, could offer superior value in spite of Baines’ spot-kicks and set-piece duties. Indeed, a mooted move to United would likely see him stripped of penalties, with a decrease in corners and set-pieces also on the cards should he join up with David Moyes again. Surprisingly, despite his superb season, Baines would have ranked as the fifth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System (BPS) – he was top for bonus in the old EA PPI based system, by comparison.

Liverpool trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique all come in at 6.0. All three exceed 130+ points last time out, with Enrique just eight points behind Johnson despite playing seven games less – of the trio, it was Agger who would have finished highest in new BPS, though. When applied to last season’s games, the Dane finished third top for defenders in the BPS, with Johnson in ninth – this could well be significant, given Agger picked up just eight bonus points in the old system in 2012/13. A regular role for the 5.0 priced Kolo Toure would see many set their targets on the Ivorian, though, while both Liverpool keepers also come in at 5.5.

Vincent Kompany (6.5) remains the costliest backline option at City, with full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy both coming in at 6.0. The question remains whether the Etihad side will remain as resolute at the back with new boss Manuel Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive – if City fail to mirror the 18 clean sheet returns and mere 34 goals against harvested under Roberto Mancini’s final year at the helm, Matija Nastasic (5.5) is a less-expensive gamble.

Elsewhere in Manchester, United have four defenders priced at 6.0 or over. Providing Baines doesn’t make the Old Trafford switch, Patrice Evra looks the most reliable in terms of game time – the Frenchman remains firmly ahead of Alex Buttner in the left-back pecking order and while he’s the costliest backline option for David Moyes’ side at 6.5, his four goals and six assists in 2012/13 highlight Evra’s attacking appeal. Intriguingly, similar to Baines, he doesn’t far quite as well in the BPS – he was ranked second for PPI last year but would have been seventh highest backline option under the BPS scoring system. As witnessed towards the final few months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, Phil Jones’ (6.0) versatility could prove crucial, with the former Blackburn man offering the Red Devils options at right-back, centre-half and central midfield but we’ve yet to see where he fits into Moyes’ plans. Rafael and Nemanja Vidic also come in at 6.0 – the right-back could well be a secure starter under the new manager and if Vidic can keep injury-free, he’s another who could thrive under the new Bonus Point System.

Finally, Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are the last two defenders in our analysis. The former’s consistency of starts, in addition to six assists from the previous year harvested 116 points but, at 6.0, he’s likely to convince few Fantasy managers into taking a punt, with better value available elsewhere. Vertonghen started last season at 6.5 but has risen to 7.0 this time round, having produced five goals and three assists in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane. The Belgian’s all-round game looks set to be significantly rewarded by the new Bonus Points System – not only would he have finished top defender and number one Tottenham player (by a considerable margin over Gareth Bale) in 2012/13, Vertonghen would have been second overall only to Robin Van Persie in the BPS rankings.

Indeed, the comparison with Bale is particularly key and suggests the Welshman may struggle to earn maximum bonus with such regularity – a crucial factor when deciding on the armband. Last season Bale bettered his team-mate by 709 points to 479 points in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and subsequently racked up 50 bonus points to Vertonghen’s 12 but under the new system, the Belgian’s all-round game see him come out top by 289 points to 209. We’ll have a more detailed analysis of the brand new Bonus Points System in an upcoming article.

Haha, yea I don't see any real enticing value in the big strikers

Aguero just came of a poor season and needs to fend off competition from negredo and jovetic and could possibly be installed as a right or left winger which is why I got silva he is 2.0m cheaper.

RVP 14.0m (there's no doubting his goalscoring abilities however he is 14.0m and 1m more expensive than he was last year + under a new coach in Moyes, I'm just not certain as to whether or not he can emulate the same form he displayed last year.

        Suarez... well he bit someone

Rooney will be an intriguing option if he moves to chelsea, will have to look at that situation if it arises

I'd like to discuss the Manchester United FPL options, to be honest its disappointing that last season's Premier League winner has so few decent fantasy options.

Starting at the back, De Gea should be nailed on, Moyes never before rotated his keepers, and at 6.0 is decent if you're willing to spend that much on a keeper.

In defence, at LB Evra is an obvious pick as a premium defender who could well be worth it, given his attacking returns; alternatively Baines there, if they sign him and sell Evra, should do well.

At CB, it looks like rotation city until Moyes establishes his preferred partnership. He clearly has no prejudice against older players, look at Phil Neville, so Vidic and Ferdinand could resume their partnership, but equally, the young trio of Evans, Smalling and Jones are all knocking on the door, so that seems like a no go area from the start, but should one of Smalling, Ferdinand or Evans nail down one spot there could be a bargain there.

At RB, once Rafael is back from suspension, he should be a good option at 6.0, minor rotation with Jones beckons, but he should certainly be first choice.

In midfield we start with the presumed centre mid pairing of Carrick and Cleverley, who look entirely ignorable from a fantasy perspective.
Looking out wide then, there is Young, Valencia, Nani and Zaha, pending any more transfer activity. At 7.5 each (6.5 for Zaha) if any of these can nail down a wing spot and actually provide decent returns then that'd be great, but last season's showings were pretty poor from all the United wingers.

Kagawa is an interesting one, I'm tempted by him at only 8.0, and a hopefully nailed on CAM spot, but unless Rooney goes, there is still a little doubt there, still, he looks like the best value attacking option from the start.

Up front, we have RVP at a ludicrous 14.0, which has put many off, and means unless he is scoring as well as last season he is very hard to fit into the team.
As for the rest, Rooney looks like his heart's not in it, and Moyes has stated isn't first choice, Welbeck scored only two goals last season, and it remains to be seen whether Moyes has the same faith in him that Fergie had, and Hernandez is likely to be a supersub again, so not really an option.

So in conclusion, what have we got?

Some potentially good options in defence, certainly better value than last year.
Kagawa in midfield at 8.0 who could be a steal if he stays fit and has fully settled in.
RVP at a near prohibitively expensive price.

This leads to an avoidance of United players until we have more evidence of where the bargains are, which seems a shame, but considering everyone bar De Gea and RVP have an ownership percentage of under 10%, it seems many people feel the same way.

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

I personally the dip in form he suffered in the 2nd half of the season will continue to an extent. He won't come firing out of the blocks.

But if he does ... will you want/be able to get him in without gnashing of teeth and points penalties?

Much easier to ship out for the form forward of 'Pool/Chels/City.

United fan here so I too had a guilty conscience at not having many United players.

Only have Kagawa and I almost felt forced while putting him in. If Rooney does leave, I'll keep Kagawa but if he stays, I'll have to see the friendlies and the community shield to make my decision. Might even ditch him later today.

RVP is too expensive and Rooney just can't be trusted anymore.
Wingers were in horrible form (hopefully that will change)

I'm wondering whether Moyes will bring more out of Evra. The style Everton played suited Baines and I wonder if Moyes will try something similar to Evra. We could potentially have many attacking points if he can get that to work out.

        Yeah, I agree.

I mean I'm a Liverpool fan but try not to be partisan when it comes to fantasy football, but i'm still disappointed when there are no decent Liverpool fantasy options.

I'd like some decent United fantasy options, as they are a top team, and when the fixtures are good, you need someone you can turn to for coverage.

At the moment Kagawa is more of a punt than a must have, lets hope he can change our minds

With respect, I hate the front line - too many questions there and no reliable C choices - and a lack of any Chels cover - as I feel, at least defensively, that they are a must-own if you have big cash at the back.

I'll give you 'different from the usual', though.

Assuming they don't have a DGW, i don't see the need to have Che cover before week 4, considering they have a blank sandwiched b/w trips to Old Trafford and Goodison.

Sturridge, imo, is a captain option who i consider better than Aguero in the first few weeks. However, i plan on captaining Bale most weeks....

I personally play a "guaranteed C choice expensive - midlevel standard - cheapie punt" front line.

And RVP's price putting people off I find a bit perplexing. I won't argue if one chooses not to have him, but other players have been 12-14.0 and worth it in the past. If he flames out, it's easy to move him on. But if he hits it, it will end in tears finding a way to bring him in.

Some seem to do at times I reckon on here..obscure names thrown around.

Regarding RVP, for me its a question of if any other elite strikers can get within say 50 points of his total. I'm edging towards a yes on that front if Rooney goes to Chelsea or Suarez to Arsenal. Maybe Aguero, but gametime is a worry there.

Good points ... My arguments above based on current teams. Signings will potentially change everything.

That said, putting in RVP as a 'placeholder' now means you can work within a "worst case scenario" budget-wise ... and if changes are made, it will be easy and fun to spend the cash elsewhere.

Thinking I may go with the alternative tactic of spreading my net for the teams with good fixtures early doors, look to farm the points and hopefully some early money if they do well, decide on RVP after GW3.

If I get a good start and RVP is looking essential as well, then an early WC it is.

If i get a poor start, well that's just standard for me at this point.

We all know how much of a lottery the first few weeks are. Our knowledge cup is empty so we naively try to fill it with conjecture and fallacies. Without knowledge of actual relevant form, strategies, formation, relationships etc. we're flying blind.
So my early doors strategy, much to the chagrin of the "coverage" preachers I'm sure, is one of doubling or tripling down on the short odds. Ie identifying the few teams that are best equipped to get off to a flyer and have the individuals that are best equipped for hauls, and double or triple down on them.
The teams I'm heavily investing in are Liverpool and Arsenal (STO/AVL, followed by a strong set of fixtures) in attack and Norwich and Southampton for budget picks.
Ill be running with something like this

    Ruddy McGregor
    Turner Clyne Shaw Collins Coleman
    Cazorla Walcott Bale Hazard Thomas
    Sturbridge Aspas Rodriguez

Seriously, though... I see so many RMT coming up these last two days with Giroud now, and I'm not seeing it. Podolski scores AND assists and I'd think would be better off under what little I understand of the new BAP system whereas Giroud scores (but not in MY lineup) and never plays the ball on to anybody else.

But if you're not rotating, why spend on an unused sub GK?

And Arsenal attacking, atm, equals Walcott (although I hear Wenger has offered a bag of chips for Messi) ... so it's either Silve or him, in your lineup.

But I think Giroud, in any instance, is likely to end in tears. Too much chaos in that frontline for Arse right now.

Strange all round, I think we thought Barca were going to buy him, and they didn't so Rafa came calling.

Not strange. We would have paid him millions to sit on the bench this season

Selling value will still go down while out on loan as he gets older. If we wanted rid, loan is considerably the lesser option of the two (sell or loan).

Presumably no one was willing to pay the fee after Barca interested did not develop.

Agreed. Don't understand a loan, either. Play or sell, imo. He's not 19 ...
