Our fourth article focussing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List is rolled out this evening. With the Goalkeepers analysis followed by articles on the Budget and Mid-Price backline options, we this time turn to the premium priced defenders on offer for the season ahead:

Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge means the Chelsea backline is currently a source of uncertainty for Fantasy managers. While Petr Cech is nailed-on in goal and Ashley Cole (6.5) looks certain to retain the left-back role, the attacking potential offer up by both David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic would be preferable – with both players setting us back 6.5, though, it’s very much a case of “wait and see” over the pre-season. There’s the hope that Cesar Azpilicueta, at 6.0, can nail down the right-back berth – having produced six assists in his debut season, the Spaniard’s contribution down the flank could prosper in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Alternatively, Mourinho could reinstall the similarly priced John Terry (6.0) as a regular at the heart of his defence once again.

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines has been handed the highest valuation of any defender after racking up 177 points in the season gone by. At 7.5, the Everton full-back could be moved to the left of Roberto Martinez’s midfield in a 3-4-3 for the season ahead – while this would undoubtedly further his points potential, Seamus Coleman, at 5.0, could offer superior value in spite of Baines’ spot-kicks and set-piece duties. Indeed, a mooted move to United would likely see him stripped of penalties, with a decrease in corners and set-pieces also on the cards should he join up with David Moyes again. Surprisingly, despite his superb season, Baines would have ranked as the fifth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System (BPS) – he was top for bonus in the old EA PPI based system, by comparison.

Liverpool trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique all come in at 6.0. All three exceed 130+ points last time out, with Enrique just eight points behind Johnson despite playing seven games less – of the trio, it was Agger who would have finished highest in new BPS, though. When applied to last season’s games, the Dane finished third top for defenders in the BPS, with Johnson in ninth – this could well be significant, given Agger picked up just eight bonus points in the old system in 2012/13. A regular role for the 5.0 priced Kolo Toure would see many set their targets on the Ivorian, though, while both Liverpool keepers also come in at 5.5.

Vincent Kompany (6.5) remains the costliest backline option at City, with full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy both coming in at 6.0. The question remains whether the Etihad side will remain as resolute at the back with new boss Manuel Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive – if City fail to mirror the 18 clean sheet returns and mere 34 goals against harvested under Roberto Mancini’s final year at the helm, Matija Nastasic (5.5) is a less-expensive gamble.

Elsewhere in Manchester, United have four defenders priced at 6.0 or over. Providing Baines doesn’t make the Old Trafford switch, Patrice Evra looks the most reliable in terms of game time – the Frenchman remains firmly ahead of Alex Buttner in the left-back pecking order and while he’s the costliest backline option for David Moyes’ side at 6.5, his four goals and six assists in 2012/13 highlight Evra’s attacking appeal. Intriguingly, similar to Baines, he doesn’t far quite as well in the BPS – he was ranked second for PPI last year but would have been seventh highest backline option under the BPS scoring system. As witnessed towards the final few months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, Phil Jones’ (6.0) versatility could prove crucial, with the former Blackburn man offering the Red Devils options at right-back, centre-half and central midfield but we’ve yet to see where he fits into Moyes’ plans. Rafael and Nemanja Vidic also come in at 6.0 – the right-back could well be a secure starter under the new manager and if Vidic can keep injury-free, he’s another who could thrive under the new Bonus Point System.

Finally, Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are the last two defenders in our analysis. The former’s consistency of starts, in addition to six assists from the previous year harvested 116 points but, at 6.0, he’s likely to convince few Fantasy managers into taking a punt, with better value available elsewhere. Vertonghen started last season at 6.5 but has risen to 7.0 this time round, having produced five goals and three assists in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane. The Belgian’s all-round game looks set to be significantly rewarded by the new Bonus Points System – not only would he have finished top defender and number one Tottenham player (by a considerable margin over Gareth Bale) in 2012/13, Vertonghen would have been second overall only to Robin Van Persie in the BPS rankings.

Indeed, the comparison with Bale is particularly key and suggests the Welshman may struggle to earn maximum bonus with such regularity – a crucial factor when deciding on the armband. Last season Bale bettered his team-mate by 709 points to 479 points in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and subsequently racked up 50 bonus points to Vertonghen’s 12 but under the new system, the Belgian’s all-round game see him come out top by 289 points to 209. We’ll have a more detailed analysis of the brand new Bonus Points System in an upcoming article.

As an experiment my sister 🙂 is entering a team based on 532 formation. Will keep the same formation all season with five quality defenders , and will manage it as normal , just to see what can ge done with that formation
Here the team thus far , i actually quite like it

    Mingolet Boruc

    Agger Vertongen Kompany Luiz Mertzaker

Not sure if FPL really track multiple accounts, I highly doubt it though with over 2 million players and presumably some households having more then one person playing.

I think there is a rule somewhere about one team per person, but in reality, it's only one team per email account, with no way of really surveilling or enforcing for those who have "multiple personalities". There are a few of such types on FFS, to be sure.

I think Caz can be easily accommodated being just 0.5 more. I was set on Wally until I started shifting my team around and realized Santi was just 0.5 more.

With everyone going Wally, it would have seemed like Caz was 2m more than Wally! Think they will both score similarly...but Wally benefitted tremendously from his stint as a striker last season. After signing his contract, he was shifted back to the right wing and Caz went toe to toe with him in terms of contributions no?

M'biwa I really rate and think he will oust taylor, but not sure if he is a safe pick for start of season.

Ramirez imo has more potential then Lallana. Benteke has a rough start, quality player though but id look at maybe Sturridge to start with in that price range.

Anelka is old, rotation risk and out for a payday I reckon. The cardiff striker at 5.5 or Graham seem better choices at that price range.

Np :), what I mean is that some elite players/defenders you can shove into your team and leave them as staples, while the budget players you generally play more to fixtures. So picking one of the 5.0m defenders at any time really comes down to the fixtures ahead. No one best, unless we get a really good value one like Kole or Kaboul and they nail down a spot.

Just read Bedknobs & Bromsticks' analysis of the new BPS. It is an impressive analysis, but I think that an imprtant point is being lost. (He himself makes the point, however indirectly, in his follow up post.)
Scorers & assisters are still going to dominate the bonus points. It is only in games that are 0-0, 1-0, and maybe 2-0 where the CBs may snag an extra bonus point compared to last year's format.
I think that people jumping on the "CBs will clean up the bonus points" bandwagon will be left disappointed.
It is true that CBs will accumulate more BPS points, but due to the winner-take-all format of allocating bonus points, getting more BPS does not translate directly into bonus points. Certain types of players may be slightly advantaged by the new system, but they will not get anything unless there are too few scorers in the match to monopoloize the bonus points.
I do like the fact that the new bonus points system is transparent, but I don't think that it will affect much overall.

I'd say that he had some good moments, but also really struggled at times. Long was often the starter and made little impact, and Lukaku would come off the bench.
But I agree that if he can string together a few more of those good moments, he could be a steal at 6.5. But I would want to see some form first.

Repost. What do ya think of this team?

We all know how much of a lottery the first few weeks are. Our knowledge cup is empty so we naively try to fill it with conjecture and fallacies. Without knowledge of actual relevant form, strategies, formation, relationships etc. we're flying blind.
So my early doors strategy, much to the chagrin of the "coverage" preachers I'm sure, is one of doubling or tripling down on the short odds. Ie identifying the few teams that are best equipped to get off to a flyer and have the individuals that are best equipped for hauls, and double or triple down on them.
The teams I'm heavily investing in are Liverpool and Arsenal (STO/AVL, followed by a strong set of fixtures) in attack and Norwich and Southampton for budget picks.
Ill be running with something like this

    Ruddy McGregor
    Turner Clyne Shaw Collins Coleman
    Cazorla Walcott Bale Hazard Thomas
    Sturbridge Aspas Rodriguez

          Kagawa -> Snod/HBA/Mirallas

Wouldn't have Kag & RVP, especially with United's opening 5. Not too keen on Bellamy myself for 5.5, massive injury risk & even though he will potentially be playing up front I doubt he'll bring great returns.

Decent team though considering you've fit in Bale & RVP.

Oo'ming and aw'ing over Barfa vs Nolan for the opening fixtures. Ben Arfa has more talent and explosiveness imo, but not sure what you'll get from the toons.

Nolan is probably overpriced this season as a long term option, but is a proven goal getter and did well without any Carroll assistance at the start of last season.

Anyone else got an opinion on this one?

I like the look of Giroud for next season (assuming Arsenal don't buy a striker, of course). Cheaper option than Theo in midfield. Sturridge seems solid if he's fit and until (and if) Suarez comes back.

I've got Silva currently, uncertainty up top and Navas' first season being the main reasons. I may switch to Navas in the end though.

    What's everyone's opinion on Kagawa?

Moderately priced at 8.0 with the potential to play up behind the main striker. I guess the main point of concern for his FPL potential is where he would be playing. During the season he was fielded mostly in the midfield but was given license to move forward when Rooney began to play in a more subdued midfield role. He possess the ability to unlock defence with his quick passing and his ability to pick out players makes him a very intriguing prospect. Is anyone going to take a punt on him for the start of the season or will the people wait until other matters such as the Rooney debacle is sorted?

Struggling to choose between 3-4-3 or 3-5-2

    Current team looks like this:

    Foster (Boruc)

Mertesacker Collins M. Turner (Clyne, S Taylor)

    Bale Walcott Snodgrass Mirallas (Thomas)

    RVP J Rod KvW

If I went 3-5-2 the front 8 would be:

    Bale Walcott Snodgrass Mirallas Nolan

    RVP J Rod (Maynard)

So basically the question is who would score more:

Nolan and Maynard or van Wolfsvinkel and Thomas?
