We roll out the seventh article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget, Mid-Price and Premium Defenders, we’ve brought you the lowdown on Budget Midfielders and Mid-Price Midfielders over the last couple of days. Next up, then, we look at what’s on offer in the premium midfield bracket.

Arsenal duo Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott are amongst the highest-priced midfielders on options this season after finishing third and fourth respectively in the 2012/13 pecking order. While Cazorla outscored his fellow Gunner by 205 points to 194, Walcott played over 1,000 minutes less than the Spaniard last season yet still picked up 14 goals and 13 assists. Given that the England winger is also cheaper by 9.5 to 10.0, his eye for goal suggests he looks the best bet in terms of both value and overall points potential in the season ahead. The x-factor here, however, is that Cazorla topped the rankings in the new bonus system (BPS) amongst the midfielders. The Spaniard earned a total of 279 BPS points last term, 34 more than any other player in his position and finished third overall behind Jan Vertonghen and Robin Van Persie; Cazorla could therefore be expected to improve on his 19 bonus points earned last season.

While the Gunners have just two options in the premium bracket vying for our consideration, Chelsea have as many as five midfielders priced at 8.0 and above. New boy Andre Schurrle and Frank Lampard will set you back 8.0 and while the German’s more advanced role is enticing for the price, the competition for places in the attacking midfield three means he’s far from guaranteed regular starts. Lampard, on the other hand, should feature far more often under Jose Mourinho and with spot-kicks in his locker, racked up 15 goals last term. Having notched in three of his last five starts, Oscar seemed to be finding his domestic feet as the previous campaign halted and, at 8.5, is an intriguing option, though there still seems some uncertainty over his consistency of starts purely due to the number of alternatives on offer to Mourinho.

Eden Hazard (9.5) and Juan Mata (10.5) will likely remain the Blues main men. Mata is looking to improve upon 212 points in 2012/13 and also has the advantage of corners and occasional set-pieces, though Hazard’s kinder cost gives him the edge in many Fantasy managers’ books after a debut season harvested nine goals and 16 assists. Given that Chelsea could be set for a double Gameweek 1, getting this call correct will be key to a strong start, as shown by last season – with Kevin de Bruyne and Victor Moses also in the hat for game time, Mourinho’s pre-season line-ups are being studied carefully.

Marouane Fellaini’s Fantasy potential much depends on Roberto Martinez’s tactics for the season ahead. If, as many anticipate, the new man in charge opts for a change in tactics, the Belgian would no longer profit from a role in “the hole”, with a switch into central midfield virtually killing his appeal. Given that both Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar would likely be part of a front three, thus handing us far more budget-friendly, out of position options within the Toffees midfield, Fellaini’s 8.5 price tag would surely be hard to justify.

Three goals, five assists and seven bonus points from just 12 starts in the second half of 2012/13 have elevated Philippe Coutinho into the premium bracket after just half a season on Merseyside. The Brazilian’s role on the left of a front three in a 4-3-3 affords him an out of position berth, though he’s equally capable of flourishing on the flank when Brendan Rodgers reverts to a 4-2-3-1. Coutinho has already produced a goal in each of Liverpool’s pre-season friendlies and while his position within the Reds’ system seems pretty straightforward, it’s yet to be established just where forwards Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas will be fielded if Rodgers plays the trio together, with all three capable of leading the line. As a result, some may opt for the security of Coutinho, at 9.0, with Suarez’s suspension and possible move away adding further confusion to the situation up front.

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard is similarly priced and despite a deep-lying role, racked up 10 goals and 12 assists in his first season under Rodgers – a score of 185 points was his highest since the 2008/09 campaign. With spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces and corners in his locker, Gerrard’s Fantasy resurgence could be set to continue and with game time guaranteed, he’ll be hoping to benefit from the new Bonus Points System – he would have finished fifth highest overall in the new scoring metric last season, racking up 245 points to Suarez’s 199 points for the Merseysiders.

Similarly to Chelsea, Man City have a quintet of midfielders priced at 8.0 or above. New boy Fernandinho and Samir Nasri, at 8.0 apiece, are perhaps unlikely to earn many suitors – the former’s more withdrawn role in front of the back-four is expected to limit his attacking potential, while Nasri could struggle for regular game time as Manuel Pellegrini looks to put his own stamp on the City side. Indeed, Yaya Toure (8.5) may also offer less going forward if the new man in charge looks to implement a 4-2-2-2 formation, with the Ivorian tasked with partnering Fernandinho in a deep-lying role. Ultimately, it may well be a couple of Spaniards that prove the most attacking options from the Etihad club. Jesus Navas (9.0) will inject plenty pace down the City right flank and, while David Silva (9.5) should switch to the opposite wing in a 4-2-2-2 system, he may be utilised in the role in “the hole” if Pellegrini moves to 4-2-3-1, with the likes of Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic capable of filling in on the left should the new man in charge opt for Silva’s trickery from a central position.

With just 87 points accrued in his debut season, Shinji Kagawa failed to flourish in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year at Old Trafford. Despite a disappointing first 12 months, the Japanese playmaker is priced at 8.0 – the costliest option within the United midfield, though there’s no doubt he has the potential to be a bargain if Wayne Rooney leaves Old Trafford and David Moyes hands him the role behind Robin Van Persie. Kagawa seems a ready-made replacement for the want-away Rooney but with United reportedly keen on bringing another playmaker to Old Trafford, the jury is still out on this one. Bearing in mind that Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are all more budget-friendly, Fantasy managers may yet find better value within Moyes’ midfield if Kagawa fails to cement a regular role under the new manager.

Last season’s Fantasy phenomenon Michu moves up to 9.0 after his debut exploits for Swansea. However, if the Spaniard can replicate hauls of 18 goals and three assists, that price tag will be justified. With new boy Wilfried Bony set to lead the line, Michu should benefit from a return to the role in “the hole” after Michael Laudrup was forced to field him as a lone forward on a number of occasions towards the end of last term. While Laudrup is expected to utilise rest and rotation to a greater extent this season as a result of Europa League duties, it seems unlikely Michu’s game time will suffer – he simply looks too key to the Swans’ prospects to be left warming the bench. With United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal in the opening six Gameweeks, though, many may decide to shop elsewhere until the schedule takes a turn for the better, while Bony’s 31 goals and eight assists from 30 league matches in the Dutch top-flight offers an alternative route into Michael Laudrup’s side, albeit as one of our three forwards.

An outstanding 2012/13 campaign has seen Gareth Bale priced head and shoulders above any other midfielder this time round. The Welshman moves up to 12.0 after producing 21 goals, nine assists and 50 bonus points in the season gone by and with a superb opening run of matches that pits him against Palace, Swansea, Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa and Hull in the first nine Gameweeks, the explosive potential which produced 14 sets of double figures in Andre Villas-Boas’ first season at White Hart Lane makes Bale a hugely appealing armband option. While some feel the acquisition of Paulinho could prove the catalyst for a switch to 4-3-3 for the season ahead, with Bale fielded as an inverted right winger, the imminent arrival of Nacer Chadli may perhaps suggest otherwise. The Belgian will give Spurs plenty pace and threat on the left and should ensure Bale retains the role in “the hole” which helped harvest an average 7.2 points per game last term, enabling Villas-Boas to hand his star man the freedom to wreak havoc on top-flight backlines from a central role once again.

As an Arsenal fan, I seem the only person that actually wants Bale to remain at Tottenham. Personally I think that, whilst Bale is phenomenal, £60m - £80m is a lot of money to be able to use to upgrade other positions on the pitch. Don't particularly want spurs entering the strikers market with that kind of money either considering how much Wenger seems to love to dither on signing prospects.

    Mignolet - Given

    Mertastacker - Nastasic - Collins - Clyne - Chester

Coutinho - Lampard - Santi Carzola - Silva - Valencia

    Lukaku - Bony - Kone

Will see what happens with Lukaku, think Lamps will play more often than not. Plenty of time to see formations until 1st game.....no doubt ill bottle it 1 hr before kick off, change entire team!

    Need suggestion for this.

I've been nailed on Mignolet since day one. But realize one problem.
if you have mig, then you can't have 3 liverpool attack, which means minor problems considering the attack option they have eg: studge, gerrard, suarez, aspas, etc..
Plus it's gonna be real headache if liverpool gets DGW which surely u want to take advantage of.

One of the dilemma's I have at the moment is Zabaletta or Johnson. I think that Richards may get more game time this year and even has the potential to take the RB spot. Nastasic may also be an option but hes no exactly nailed on either? What do people think?

Also, any opinions on Altidore? I have 7m left for a striker and was going to go with Kone but don't really want to. I think that Anelka may be too much of a risk and would rather wait and see how he gets on in the early GWs. I already have RvW because I have read and heard good things plus Norwich have pretty nice fixtures early on.

    Thanks 🙂

Johnson would be more nailed on, but I honestly can't see Liverpool keeping as many clean sheets this season. I always have doubt with any City player, Silva being the only one I will take a punt on right now. Why not play it safe and go with Mertesacker? Great early fixtures and the new BP system will benefit him. As for Altidore, I think there are plenty of better options around. I chose Jay Rodriguez over him, and that also frees up an extra 1.0m, which you could really need. Hope that helps 🙂

Yeah was thinking Mert was an alternative. I prefer Aguero over Silva at the moment. I dont think theres any doubt that Aguero will start (I think Negredo and Jovetic will be rotated). Silva will more than likely play a lot too but Navas and an in form Milner may take some of his game time so wouldnt call him nailed on.

Ok I see Jay Rodriguez has become hugely popular on this blog but why? I genuinely cant see it? I think Lambert will be there key attacker but I feel hes overpriced. So what does J Rod have this year that he didnt have last year?

I think it's because of how he finished last season. He would play in front of Lambert and they would be both score and assist each other. In the last 5-10 games of the season he outscored Lambert overall and comes in 6.0m compared to Lambert's 7.5m. Personally I don't actually have him in my team, but I understand the hype, he could be big this season.

The only line I'm unhappy with at the moment is my attack. I currently have Aguero and RvW with 7m left. Kone has potential given the fact he scored goals with Wigan whos supply would be much worse than Everton. Ahh feck it I've just decided I'm sticking with Kone. If J Rod starts off well I'll just have to take it like a man and eat my words 🙂

Don't really like the first team, too many risky players and 2 arsenal midfielders is a bad idea. The second team is better IMO but Navas isn't guaranteed to play and not too mad about Anelka and Ruiz up front. Also consider downgrading Walker to a cheaper defender and improving your strikers.

A is a slicker side, but no sense doubling up Citeh at the back. If you want to go hart, surely an arsenal, chelsea or pool defender is a better option.

I have tried to go with a cheap defence, pricey midfield and Strikers approach; you get better value for money in attack as evidently proven.

    Turner-Mertesacker-Clyne-(Whittaker-Baker)

Coutinho in the pre-season has been scoring goals for fun from what I have seen. He was one of my latest changes for Michu, so that was a bit of a gamble.

Sturridge I feel will be the main striker for Liverpool why Suarez is out, and the form he finished last season with is a massive impact for me!

The team isn't that bad, I think you have just made a few choices that can be changed 🙂

Jaas could be a great choice in goal this year, however you would be safer going with some kind of keeper rotation. The preferred one right now seems to be Foster and Boruc, however I've opted for Ruddy and Boruc, since Norwich have a great start and ruddy can pull bags of saves in a game. The only real problem with the defence is the distribution of money. With either RVP or Bale being essential, you have to evenly spread your cash, so the best way to do that is invest in a cheap rotating defence. My personal choice would be having Clyne and Collins instead of Riise and Baker. It would be best if you didn't cash in on Baines and Evra, since there are lots of great options further up your team, so downgrade Evra to Mertesacker and Baines to Toure. Swansea have a tough run early, so Davies would be a better option later on in around GW4. In the meantime, just pick up a 4.0m defender like Turner or Chester. Now onto the midfield, which in my opinion is the hardest to decide. I know Michu is a beast, but like Davies, just a few weeks premature. Easy trade there is to get Walcott. Mata will have returned from a friendly against Ecuador just a day or so before the first match, so bring in Hazard who is cheaper anyway and almost guaranteed a start. A better option than Bellamy would be Snodgrass, who at 6.5m is a bargain for the score he got last season. Upgrade Colback to Koren or Brady from Hull City, because they will rotate well with your 3rd striker. Now the strikers, and since you seem only keen on Bale, you should try and get Aguero in here. This can be achieved by downgrading Lambert to Rodriguez, who is probably the better option at Southampton anyway, and then upgrading Benteke to Aguero. Lastly, depending on how much money you have leftover, I would invest in either Anelka (5.5m) or Gayle (5.0m) as that 3rd striker to rotate with Koren. With these trades you have Arsenal/Chelsea/City/Liverpool cover, which are all important. Hope that helps 😀

One thing I will say is that if there are players in that team that you think will be awesome this season, then go with them. Benteke and Michu are both great punts, so all I was doing was giving you a different perspective. At the end of the day, when that season starts, it's all on YOUR choices, not mine 🙂

Been looking at some ideas for teams down the track depending on what the situation is with Gareth Bale:

    1. Bale-less

    Ruddy Boruc

Mertesacker Toure Collins Clyne B. Turner

    Silva Walcott Coutinho Snodgrass Thomas

    RVP Giroud J Rod

    2. RVP-less

    Ruddy Boruc

Mertesacker Toure Collins Clyne B. Turner

    Silva Walcott Bale Snodgrass Thomas

    Aguero Giroud J Rod

    3. RVP and Bale

    Ruddy Boruc

Mertesacker Toure Collins Clyne B. Turner

    Silva Walcott Bale Snodgrass Koren

    RVP Gayle J Rod

Out of these teams, which one seems like the best to go with? 😀

Team 2 for me. Would make one change to it though. I wouldn't have both Walcott and Giroud. Would probably change Giroud for another striker but I think the strikers are the hardest to pick this year so I'm not going to make any suggestions 🙂

Fair call, if I had the extra 1.0m I would get Negredo in there, but I would probably just put in Bervatov or even a sneaky punt at RvW or Kone. Very tough decisions!

Yeah I'm taking a punt on RvW but thats because I dont have Snodgrass. Another similarity with my team you have both Clyne and Boruc and this may be putting too many eggs in the southampton defence basket when you do start Boruc. For this reason I have taken out Boruc and brought in Mignolet and Davis

Only thing that worries me about bringing in Mignolet is that he isn't going to get as many saves since he's playing for a team with a better defence. Could cost him good points. I reckon Boruc and Ruddy will need to save plenty of shots this season and can keep clean sheets early. I don't like relying on just one keeper, because if Migs gets injured then it might make me do a -4 when I would prefer not to. You make a very good point though, one that will make me sweat for the next 3 weeks 😉 haha

Go with your instinct but I think I'm settling with Mingolet. I'm also half hoping that Boruc makes a few howlers/ gets injured so Davis starts and then I have the best of both worlds 🙂

I suppose that is the downside of having both, it throws off your teams balance. I'm becoming more interested in this idea of going with Aguero and then downgrading a midfielder to get 3.0 to upgrade Aguero to RVP for GW4. Just seems risky!

Team 2 for me - I'm still unconvinced whether RVP and Bale is practical and I believe Bale, assuming he stays, will be essential.

Toure is potentially top value but you'll have to keep an eye on Liverpool's transfer activity. If they do buy another CB, consider upgrading Ruddy for Mignolet and downgrade to one of the many decent 4.5 defenders.

I like the looks of Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace. If Cole doesn't go to Palace, Gayle will be their No.1 forward at the start of the season. The last centre forward Holloway managed in the first game of the PL season was Harewood back in 2011/12, and he went on to get 15 points from memory. The fact is that Holloway has a very attacking mindset and Gayle should get plenty of chances to impress, also he's a perfect rotation with a hull city midfielder 😀

To be honest, he probably isn't, but he's hard to ignore. Problem is it is incredibly hard to make a balanced team with RVP and Bale both in it. Most people are getting rid of RVP, choosing Aguero, and then planning to trade out Aguero for RVP in GW4. It really depends on your preference. Personally, I'm undecided.

Hi guys - could do with some advice and I've got myself into a bit of a tangle with this one.
I want cover for City, Pool and Chelsea - however flawed the idea of 'cover' is - and I can't work out the best way to do it.

Silva, with a forward line of Aguero, Aspas/7m and Lukaku

    OR

Hazard with a forward line of Negredo, Sturridge and Kone/7m

Which would you take? Aguero's probably more nailed on than Negredo but Sturridge probably has more points in him than Aspas. Hazard's more direct but has a tricky set of fixtures/ghost game.

For reference, the rest of my midfield is Bale, Walcott, Snodgrass and Thomas.

Thanks very much in advance. 😀

I'd do one of two things in that situation.

Either upgrade Wanyama to a 6.5m - probably Snodgrass
OR upgrade Mirallas to a 9m - either Coutinho or Silva depending on your other selections.

It's all personal preference IMO. I'd probably punt for Snodgrass - even as a Saints fan, I'm unconvinced how many points Wanyama will get as I expect he will hold midfield alongside Schneiderlin. Snodgrass had a great season and can't see it changing this season.

Just a few ideas - there's nothing catastrophically wrong with your midfield. 😀

Wanyama is a defensive mid. can't expect much more than an occasional assist. So going with snodgrass makes much more sense

Personally I dont think you can have a balanced team when you have both Bale and RvP. I would go with one of them to make your team more balanced.

Another thing you should be aware of is that defenders dont score as heavily as attackers and midfielders. Therefore, I think you should downgrade your defence for some cheaper ones and change your formation to 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. I would take out kaboul and buy a cheaper defender.
