Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Westwood was one of the best young keepers around a couple of years ago before injuries and Mignolet came along. He was named in the Championship PFA Team of the Year for 2009 in his debut season with Coverntry and he won the club's player of the year award for the 2009–10 season.

Mannone on the other hand has been third choice at a club who were without a decent performing keeper for a while and still yet he still remained third choice. However, he showed vast signs of improvement during last season when both Chesney and Flappy were injured. His injury then gave Flappy a chance to take back the #2 spot which, of course, he did with some superb displays. Mannone is also known to be unpredictable at the back.

Who's your money on to take the #1 spot at Sunderland?

Westwood is seemingly the favourite. But its far from certain who is first choice and with virtually whole new team coming in its hard to judge how Sunderland will perform, best just to avoid.

    Heres a good hot topic

If somebody said for $1000 that you could have UNLIMITED funds in FPL but you need to finish in the top 500 in the world, would you accept?

If you manage to finish in the top 500 you win $10,000. If you don't, you lose the $1000

How are other RVP-ers shoehorning him into their team?

I've gone budget strikers (reckon will keep J.Rod as he will rise in value/Weimann to v.Wolf after the DGW).

Should I downgrade the defence a bit further to free-up funds?

It's tough, but uncertainty and rotation will badly affect Chelsea/Man City strikers.

But they are voluntary contributions right? There's probably better ways to invest the money you are putting in. Speak to a financial advisor. Even putting money into an ISA you'll probably get more money than the 'state pension'

Yeah, it's definately worth speaking to a financial advisor though, they'll be able to make your money go further. Check how they are paid, quite a few get the money from the pension provider for example, meaning you don't need to pay them

I also wouldn't bother with NI contributions. Since leaving the UK I pay nothing. I wouldn't trust there to be any money left for public pensions anyway. Private pensions are the way forward, and since your wife doesn't have an employer she you could both just put an extra amount away yourselves in a long term bond/stocks/maxi-ISA or something like that.

    AGUERO:
    Reasons to get him
    - Plays for arguably the best team in the league
    - Is their best striker
    - Is on penalties
    - Easy start to the season, could get cricket scores.
    - New strikers may start season on the bench for them to get used to the league.
    - Easier upgrade to get RVP in GW4ish

    Reasons not to get him
    - ROTATION (esp with Pelly's comments (Dzeko/Negredo can play together etc))
    - Pelly has spent a lot of cash, he will want to give his signings playing time so they do not appear as flops.
    - Easy games, therefore the best time to give the new players a start maybe?
    - Aguero can play deeper.
    - Pre-season form not amazing, scoring very little.
    - Is he injured?
    - Dzeko in form.
    - New manager, so who knows? Could start slow (or with a bang...)

    Anything I missed?

This is the main headache for me at the moment, undecided. What do we think?

I've seen a few people who plan to do a GW4 upgrade to RVP from Aguero. I'm more inclined to just start with RVP. Both Aguero and RVP are in the same camp, having new managers that is, but RVP is as nailed on as you can get. People have been saying he's "fixture-proof" for years, now it's a big deal that he has some toughies on the horizon?

Maybe avoid City for the start of the season? The uncertainty around them won't be cleared until we see some squad sheets and a few matches.

I feel like you should avoid City strikers at the start of the season and take a closer look as to what Pelly is gonna do with Aguero as well as newly signed players and then decide. In the opening weeks, I guess there are many striker options other than Aguero who could rack some points.

Think that could be a close run thing over the season, mainly because more competition for Lukaku's place, otherwise if he was nailed on he would win.

How many players that are new to English football are youall sstarting with. I try to avoid new signings, promoted players, players under new managers etc week 1 but this season with the prices and managerial changes, its not easy.

I now have my week 1 side down to 1 player who hqs no experience in England (Andreas Cornelius). That said though, come week 2, there is a fair chance I will switch Lukaku to Negredo.

Am I crazy to only go for Hazard in the DGW?

I don't see any of the Villa players being worth it and Chelsea are a rotation nightmare with not many players guaranteed to start both games.

Then they have 3 difficult fixtures out of the next 4 plus a BLANK.

I don't want to be taking hits or planning a Wildcard so early in the piece.
