While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B†team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage†could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

btw, my fixture proof point wasn't as much an rvp thing as the concept in general. an easier fixture is easier to score or assist in as it's an easier fixture, surely stating the obvious but you know what i mean. hum-dingers like north-london derbies or that mental 11/12 season where the top 4 teams were involved in goal-fests against eachother will always be anomalies (although shouldn't be ignored, e.g the north london derby is probably now at that 'more than a coincidence' stage).

i think there's merit in trusting rvp early doors as he's the most trustable striker out there. the counter argument is a goal in each of those games is almost a minimum for his price (with the counter to that being a more reliable captain choice as a result, then a counter to that being not the best captain necessarily, simply the most reliable)

The risk with RVP is mainly to the downside for the first three weeks.
If he dosent score double figures then hes probably cost more than he
      makes your team

His fixtures in the first 5 and the possibility of a rest because of CL mean that he is a no-go for me.

I'm surprised anyone is considering him.

This is very simplistic, but I think it provides some insight. If you take last seasons total points, divide by minutes played, then divide by this seasons price, you get a figure you can use to vaguely compare value for money.

Based on this rvp comes at 599. All the other top scoring players last season come in over 700, with a few exceptions, but even they're above 650.

I get the argument that he's a consistent captain choice, but last season was a fantastic season for rvp with a fantastic manager. Even then his value for money didnt match the cheaper players.

I'm coming round to the view that he's too expensive and requires too much sacrifice. To justify his price he has to do even better than last season. Remember that he's thirty...

Not really. I'd bet you a considerable amount of money that many of the obvious ones, if not all, will beat the 600 hurdle rate. Sturridge, for example, scores 877.

Not that these figures are particularly reliable

Its the captain arguement that people will use to justify having him in their teams.

But for me 14m is just way too much - needs a season of 300 to justify that in my opinion.

The way I look at it is that ever week RVP fails those that have him double fail cos their captain fails too. And if the crap they're hiding in their team also fails thats a treble fail

If you spend 9m on Soldado instead (for example) and he fails than you still have the hope that your captain (on the weeks that its not Soldado) wont fail and you also have the likelihood of more points from elsewhere in your team due to the extra 5m of quality in it.

Of course RVP can hit a hattrick some week but its just too much to risk if someone like Giroud, Soldado or Kone perform similar to Suarez last season.

In short I see big sales of RVP when he doesn't deliver cos people will see that they're missing out on points in too many other places....

Just looked at Liverpools fixtures in more detail.

    Are they really that easy?

    STK - fair enough
avl - there were much improved later in the year and carry attacking threat
    MUN - clearly dark red
swa - should be at least red if not dark red
SOT - will be one of the decent mid table teams this year, have spent well
sun - never going to be that easy away from home

Certainly dont think Coutinho > Silva.
And at 9.0 Sturridge could struggle to be worth it.
Even Migs might not be worth it either.

Ultimately, its Liverpool, they are a midtable team.

i would say they are just below the power 5 even if Bale leaves Spurs, bit harsh to call them middtable. I would say they are in no mans land really (#6). Back to the main point if you take Suarez's ban into account you have a good point

I don't think Sturridge or Coutinho are worth 9m, and I've not even been considering them. Liverpool blow so hot and cold but they can be resolute in defence (and have been in preseason). I'm tripling on their defence - mainly because of the kind prices of Migs and Toure - but also because it excuses me from having to try to pick Chelsea cover from their rotation threatened defence.

        Or

The longer Suarez stays there, the more he comes into contact with fellow players and gets support from fans.

Apparently, he is pretty vulnerable emotionally.

We buy RVP for the captaincy issue in the whole but having him means we have to have 3 cheaper options on average in our front 7. Thought I'd take a look beyond GW4 to see whether captaincy options would be a problem without the Dutchman.

I've included Walcott Hazard Michu Sturridge and Soldado as my big hitters

    4 Soldado NOR
    5 Walcott STO
    6 Sturridge sun
    7 Sturridge CPL
    8 Hazard CAR
    9 Soldado HUL
    10 Michu car
    11 Michu STO
    12 Walcott SOT
    13 Sturridge hul

Would the 3 extra big hitters make up the Captaincy difference if we had RVP?

That's enough reason to forgo RvP in my opinion.

Throw in a Silva or whoever is firing for City and you've got a great slew of choices for captaincy.

Well without him I can also afford silva, and I think you can make a fairly strong case that you'd get by without rvp.

It's not the lack of captain choices, its the consistency. RVP gets attacking returns almost every game, and everyone just slaps the armband on him, he is the most consistent I think, and there's a lesser chance of you getting the captaincy wrong. As an example, Norwich might just be able to keep Spurs out or not concede more than a goal. While RVP goes on to grab an assist and there's an 8-point pre-bonus difference already.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. You can afford a very similar front 8 with or without RVP. For me the key issue is "will a stronger defence compensate". Assuming all and sundry will crowbar RVP into their teams for GW4, you only need compare the first 3 gameweeks and factor in at least a 4 point hit for those that start without him.

With the news Bale will progably leave i intitially flirted with distributing some of the saved money into defence, and came up with some decent looking teams,
However , with the arrival of Soldado and Rooney probably going to chelsea im once again leaning towards the uber defence, to maximise attacking power.

How are others distributing the Bale money?

City fan here. Garrido is first choice but Olsson will be serious competition rather than back up and imagine it'll depend on who the opposition RM is. If I go with any of our defenders it'll be M Turner for sure. He's got a goal or two in him as well.

I have created a mini league in FPL. It's not going to a very competitive league as my other friends expected to join are mostly people who check their teams on game days. But I would appreciate it if some of the people here also joined to make it more competitive. Thanks in advance for joining.
