Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear finally made his first major move into the summer transfer market yesterday evening by snapping up Loic Remy on a season-long loan deal from QPR. The 26-year-old Frenchman – who was previously linked with a move to Tyneside last January – revealed his international ambitions played a significant part in the switch, with next summer’s World Cup in Brazil clearly on his radar.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player. It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy’s career began in 2006 but the forward failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just 12 appearances over a season and a half at the club. Farmed out on loan to Lens midway through the 2007/08 campaign, Remy produced three goals and two assists in 10 matches, with his eye for goal persuading Nice to fork out a club record €8m in June 2008.

Remy’s impact was immediate in his new surrounds, with 11 goals and three assists in 32 appearances across his debut season before he racked up 14 goals and five assists in 34 matches the following year. After scoring once in two matches at the start of 2010/11, he was transferred to Marseille for €15m, though he was forced to undergo stringent medical tests after an initial assessment indicated he was suffering from a heart defect. Having been given the all-clear, Remy flourished in his first couple of league campaigns, producing 27 goals and 10 assists from 60 Ligue 1 matches but his final season at the club was far less successful. Demoted to the bench, he made just two starts and 12 sub appearances, notching a single goal, before QPR came calling back in January.

Despite dropping down to the Championship at the end of last term, Remy was quick to settle at Loftus Road. Although he turned out just 14 times for Harry Redknapp’s side, he still managed to finish the season as the R’s top scorer, having found the net on six occasions.

Remy has also represented his national side on 18 occasions and has produced four goals and an assist for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Undoubtedly, the Magpies are in dire need for extra firepower for the season ahead. Alan Pardew’s side scored just 19 goals in 18 games following Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea back in January and found the net in only three of their final eight league matches, ironically clinching their league safety in a 2-1 win over Remy’s QPR in Gameweek 37.

Having failed to get his man first time around, Pardew was clearly delighted to finally clinch the Frenchman’s signature and his words suggest the new boy will be regarded as a key player for the Magpies in the upcoming campaign:

“Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals. It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Pardew’s formation for the season ahead will be key as to how we assess the new boy’s potential. The Magpies boss has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems over the summer so far, though a 4-3-3 also looks viable, with Remy perhaps fielded on the right and Hatem Ben Arfa on the opposite flank, allowing Papiss Cisse to retain the lone forward slot. Ideally, though, a central berth is clearly the best scenario – a reverse out of position role out wide will dent Remy’s appeal, with Ben Arfa or even Moussa Sissoko appearing on our radars, should the latter get his wish and return to the role in “the hole” behind Cisse.

Priced at 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 by The Sun Dream Team, Remy has been handed a price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) earlier this afternoon – less than Cisse’s 8.5 yet more than Yoan Gouffran at 6.5 amongst Newcastle’s frontline options. One factor which may fall in his favour could be spot-kick duties; with Ba now departed and Cisse failing to impress from the spot, Remy may vie with Ben Arfa in the penalty pecking order.

Looking at the opening schedule, while a Gameweek 1 trip to City is far from favourable, Newcastle’s following four fixtures (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) offer plenty reason to be optimistic. The downside, however, is Remy is currently struggling with a calf complaint and, while Pardew is still hopeful he will make the bench in time for the season opener at the Etihad, the Magpies boss has also admitted he is still on the lookout for more options up front, with the club still linked with a bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.

While there’s no doubt a role alongside Cisse would make Remy a viable alternative, it may take a few weeks until we are afforded a proper assessment of his potential. With a lack of pre-season training and more new signings perhaps imminent, it’s yet to be established whether Remy has been earmarked for a wide role – such a scenario would prove a major deterrent, with far more secure, central options in the mid-price bracket elsewhere.

Following on from Dino's hot topic a little bit, I'd like to postulate that the optimal two Chelsea players to transfer out after GW1 are a midfielder and a forward, rather than having to worry about ditching a defender.

In GW1 its almost certain that a number of bandwagons will pop up. Some mid priced mids, some expensive mids, some mid priced strikers, some expensive strikers. None of them will be defenders. By having a Chelsea mid and forward that you are already planning to ditch, you can combine their values to jump on the best possible pairing of midfield and striker bandwagons.

    For instance;

    Lukaku + Oscar > whichever 9.5m striker is a hit + any 7 m mid
If you have a defender you need to get rid of, you then have to choose whether you want the mid or the striker unless you want to take another hit.

For Ivanovic? Yes. For one defender to do particularly well and start a bandwagon? No.

It could be Luiz this year, or Terry.

But if you have Hazard as your mid, surely you'll just want to get him back before too long. Getting rid of him only to get him back in a few GWs seems a bit of a wasted transfer just to avoid his blank.

What if Lukaku or Oscar (or whoever) scores in both games? They are then the bandwagon.

Look at it mathematically and it's a minimum of 4 DGWers, giving maximum opportunity for points and accept you'll probably take a hit before GW2, which we seem to agree upon.

I still think its worth having one Chelsea defender because you can downgrade him to any cheap bandwagon uber who might go up in price early on. Then you can reinvest the extra coin in the attack if necessary. After all, you might want to upgrade Lukaku if you have him.

You do raise a good point though about having a midfielder and a forward. Perhaps its best to get one from each position to cover all the bases.

That was my original idea yes.

I played it early last season to gain value. Only made 0.9m and ended up doing badly for 3-5 weeks after. Did manage to get in Michu etc but the rest was a waste of a WC.

What I'm trying to say is that many made that sort of money in a week without WC.

WC prob best kept for injuries and if you have all the wrong players(which seldom happens).

Yes, I am generally wary of a planned wildcard, but apparently around 50% of the top 50k did it in the first 3 gameweeks last season, so it's probably worth at least thinking about - as many did as didn't.

Yep, Jim. My confidence suddenly returned when I stuck him in the team. He gets 6-9 points every week and I'd be stupid to ignore him.

I'm counting on a few new Michus to come along and take the places of the pricy players that no one can fit in to their squads.

          Hows your team looking?

I've left it alone recently in the hope that some of the transfers will actually be decided. I'll have another proper look next week. Currently without RVP, but that's by no means a final decision.

Boruc->4m keeper and re invest the 500k(maybe upgrade JT to Kim/Koren)

I downgrade one of Cole/Mertesuckher and upgrade Anelka if possible.

If one of Soldado/Bony hit the ground running you would want to get them in and it would mean a major reshuffle I think.

I'm not a big fan of Dzeko, Anelka and Thomas but that is a strong team. The RVP teams are looking very good these days and they are making a persuasive case to include the dutchman in our GW1 squads. I'm slowly coming around to the idea.

Well if scores in the first 2-3 gwks, which as we all know is very likely, his price will go up and it will make it even harder to get him in.

I'd prefer to start with him in and try to build a team around him.

Huge post bout something how many times a center forward jogged backwards, huge post about when I will wildcard and the 357 reasons why (post about a new player noones heard of)

As you can see I've gone for an uber defence tripling up on off topic, heavy five in midfield and two big guns up top

Sorry mate I have seventeen spreadsheets on how someone jogged in the opposite direction to the way they were facing. That sort of backwards.

The results show the players jogging backwards often run into other people and objects.

And that is the point. Baines at 7.5 is better than Mirallas at 7.5 but you do need to consider the other def / mid to balance things out.

The other way to understand that in real terms Baines costs more than Mirallas is to look at the base price of each classification. The cheapest defender available is 4.0 and the cheapest midfielder is 4.5.

Therefore Baines is £3.5m more than the base and Mirallas just £3m more. It is on this basis that really you should only compare players prices within the same position classification or compare a defender costing £0.5m less than a midfielder.

Even then you need to establish what talent is available at those price ranges. For example Collins at £4.5m appears a way better selection than any midfielder at £5m. The more times you can achieve this with cheaper defenders over midfielders enables you to spend more in midfield and upfront to get the big hitters. To complicate things further there is a good option at 5.0 (Toure) and a number of good options at 5.5 (Lescott, Arsenal defenders) and even extending this to the 1st GW with the Chelsea double), to me selecting Baines is not the value option that you may have inititally thought.

by gw5 will rvp’s price rise or fall?

how many would he need to score to increase his price?

also, being new, what affects the increase or decrease in a player’s value. is it how many managers invest or how many points they score / are there other factors????

no no this is from the last gameweek of last season, prices wont change until after gw1, also when a player is at 200% they will rise twice. (a rise meaning 0.1)

Any southampton fans in here or anyone to give the lowdown on Gaston Ramirez?

Will he definitely start, where does he play and how has his preseason gone?

Toying with him instead of Lambert at the moment...anyone have any info?

          V. short pre-season due to Confed Cup commitments so it's hard to say. He'll likely play in attacking midfield, behind Lambert, and I would say his chances of starting are very good. The only problem is a lack of fitness which haunted him last season as he rarely completed more than an hour. Missing out on the final third of a game can be pretty costly. Considered Lallana? I expect him to be more consistent but less explosive.

cheers mate. I hadnt considered Lallana at all I think I'd prefer DeGuzman over him tho...
I think Ramirez looks the best of the 6m mids if he starts/stays fit this season.
I'm also considering Henderson believe it or not, he notched a few goals last yr and a few in preseason so I might just gamble.
Sissoko is also interesting me and I wish I knew if Ramsey was gonna play...

Its a minefield in this category!!!

Sissoko was a contender for me at one point but the purchase of Remy and their interest in more strikers means he's now bound to play wide, not in the hole as he prefers.

Lallana plays wide left, as opposed to De Guzman's much more deep position. There's no doubt, Lallana played very averagely last season and was injured. But he could be great, as could Ramirez. I think they're both well priced - it's just calling it.

Ramsey may be doomed to the bench, imo - I'd steer clear.

I'm not sure how Henderson will fit in at Liverpool.

Good point on Sissoko, will defo avoid him if shunted out wide...
I like DeGuzman cos I think he'll be a BP magnet in this new system and he also has penos there too and always good for an assist with his passing.
I will be watching Southampton very closely, expecting a big improvement from them and there could be some bargains in their squad so Lallana and Ramirez will remain on the radar 🙂
So for the moment its Ramirez/DeGuzman/Henderson.... will leave it at that and look again at the wknd, I might squeeze out the 0.5 and plump for Snodgrass!
                cheers

Okay, first draft is here.. Pick the bones out of that if you will..

        Foster

        Kompany, Cole, Mertesacker

        Walcott, Hazard, Jarvis, Coutinho

        Dzeko, Soldado, Lukaku

        Subs: Boruc, Coleman, Baker, Thomas

Zero point zero in the bank, and may swap Dzeko for Carroll.. Which is increasingly looking likely as time passes by..

I certainly will be! Either him or Kompany. Depending on performance. If Mourinho can get Chelsea's defence performing again, it may be Kompany's head on the chopping block!

Fair enough. Shaw or Murner are good options.

I could knock 0.5 off Lukaku once he's done for the DGW, and swap for Carroll, giving me that bit extra to upgrade Baker? I guess then I'm stuck with the conundrum of Dzeko and the City forward line rotation.. Hmmmnnn. And then there's Bale with the "will he or won't he" drama. He's essential if he stays. I'll have to prepare another draft, as I'm off to France on Friday for a fortnight with no Internet!!

Quite a heavy defense but a generally, a great first draft.

Personally, I would downgrade Kompany to a 4.5m option (Collins or MTurner) or even 4.0m bench fodder since you Coleman too. Then ship Jarvis for Mirallas.

I see Silva creeping into many teams . Im not convinced , it strikes me as a desperate attempt to get coverage , simply because he starts most games.
I dont see much upside tbh. He will get a few assists no doubt and the occasional goal , but he just one of many in a star studded team.
Think i would rather have Dzeko and risk him being a sub sometimes . He more potential for some big hauls

I dunno. He's an elite assist player, and if Man City are a better attacking side this year, he could get more goals. If he plays enough minutes I see him as potentially on the level of a Mata, fantasy wise.

This is exactly the logic he's talking about.

Better attacking side DOES NOT EQUATE more fantasy pts.

Better side = points being shared among more players.

Aguero Dzeko Negredo Jovetic Silva Navas Nasri Milner Yaya Fernandinho etc..

I suppose so, but two years ago City were good, Silva was solid fantasy wise. Last year, City struggled, Silva struggled. If he gets the minutes, and City gets the goals, I don't see any reason he can't duplicate or exceed his performance from their title season. For only 9 million, I'm willing to take the gamble over Coutinho/Michu, at least at first given the fixtures.

I have Silva in over Coutinho at the moment (although it's tight).

It's partly down to fixtures. Week 3 I would rather have Silva at home to Hull than Coutinho at Man United, especially when I have 2 other Liverpool players in my team at the moment as well.

          ---------------Cech
          Ivan, Terry, Cahill, Cole

Ok, let's try to solve this RVP conundrum more systematically.

Everyone with a rank of 10,000 or better last year reply and say whether they will have RVP from GW1.

We will only count the ones with a link to their team history and aggregate the results. Deal?

I'm guessing it'd be roughly equal. It's not a cut and dry issue at all... Yes he is probably the most consistent player in the game, but he is also incredibly expensive.
Some people will prefer to play safe and bring him in early, some will want to take the risk and go without but have a contingency plan to get him in, others still will back themselves to spend the money saved well enough to go without him long term.

FWIW I came circa 1500 and am undecided. 😀

In one season? Doesnt make a difference. The games about going with your gut and (for us) getting advice from FFS when we can. As saying above I wouldnt think because someone finished 100k the previous year that their advice is useless.

Their are ppl on here whos advice is very good but youd be surprised at their previous years ranks.

If a load of people are really really good at something and let's face it if you're top 1K in fpl you are and most of them had something in common then time to swallow your pride and find out what it is

Not saying someone who finished 100K doesn't count but I'd rather listen to 900 people who finished top 1K than one person who finished 250K or whatever.

Why aren't more people going super strong 5 MFs? Can't figure out who to leave out between hazard, Wally, countinho, silva (for the early run) and mirallas. Leaves plenty of money to get two solid strikers (i like giroud and lukaku personally) and a bench fodder (I'm going gayle who has a nice gw3 when hazard is on the bench) plus a solid defense?

Obviously If you got RVP I understand, but do people really think the bentekes, dzekos, soldados will out score any of those MFs out of the gate - they feel riskier to me

I love him too, but chelski, gunners, pool and bye out of the gate is horrible...just surprised he is in so many teams from the start. Some teams/ players are fixture proof, but villa?? How can silva with his easy run not produce more points than him early?

Do you really believe that? He scored 19 goals last season which will be very difficult to replicate let alone improve upon and that performance ranked him less than the 8th best Midfielder last season.

But he did end up being the fourth best striker. So it's not just a question of whether the midfielders are going to outscore him, but whether any other strikers are going to out score him that have a similar or lower price.

Shouldn't we be comparing strikers to striker?

That said I'm going for Soldado over him, if bale is off to Madrid

Well no not really as the original post was regarding playing 5 big mids and only 2 up front as opposed to the stander 3-4-3. So when comparing formations I think its okay to look at those apples and oranges in the same light.

If spurs don't sell bale soon and bring talent in to mesh, I really think think are a mid table team until things settle down. Reminds of arsenal two years ago after they sold fab/ nasri....eventually wenger got them going but took a month or two. Avb is a much weaker coach than wenger...

I am 100% with you. A few years ago you couldn't even get bench fodder up top for under 5.5m but now you can for 4.5m if you really want to and with the unproven quality of many strikers and in my opinion the very generous pricing of midfielders in the 9-9.5m mark makes it a very valid tactic this year.

Thnx, sometimes I feel like a lone wolf on this board going 352. So many people willing to punt early, combined with Chelsea problems in gw2 and 3 feels riiiiiiiiisky...

Nope the wolf pack is alive and well. I am already trying to work out how I am going to squeeze Michu into that midfield as well once his fixtures clear up.

Its not even the issues that surround GW2-3 that worry me about Chelsea, its predicting game time in GW1!!!!!!

You have the same 5 MFs I mentioned I presume? How can teams be leaving them off...I feel they all could 11.0 or more (except mirallas of course)

Im planning on dumping silva for michu but tough to plan that far ahead....
